Last updated: October 2026
CSIS (the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, DC think tank) posts internships three times a year and reviews them on a rolling basis. Its FAQ says summer roles are "typically posted in February," fall roles in July and spring roles in October. On 16 October 2026 its job board listed 10 intern roles, paying $18.40 to $20.40 an hour. You apply in winter for summer 2027, and the winter and spring 2026-27 roles are open now.
Because review is rolling, being early matters more than any single deadline. One posting, the Energy Security and Climate Change Program role, does state a hard cutoff: Friday 23 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

What Is a CSIS Internship?
A CSIS internship is a paid, term-based internship in one of the research programs or offices at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. CSIS offers "full and part-time internships in the fall, spring and summer for undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates," according to its internships page.
CSIS was established in 1962 and describes itself as a bipartisan, nonprofit policy research organization with some 275 employees, including more than 120 analysts, per its postings. Interns also join the Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy, which runs a speaker series, skill-building workshops and culture-building events.

When Do CSIS Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
CSIS's FAQ says internships are "typically posted in February for our summer semester (June - August), July for our fall semester (September - December), and October for our spring semester (January - May)." In practice the spring-term roles started appearing earlier this year: the Greenhouse board shows winter and spring postings first published from mid-September to 15 October 2026.
We checked the board on 16 October 2026. It listed 11 openings, 10 of them internships, and a live posting id and an invented id returned different responses. Summer posts about 3.5 to 4 months before a June start, by our estimate from the FAQ. CSIS hasn't published a summer 2027 date, so February 2027 is an expectation, not an announcement.
Winter and spring 2026-27 roles are open and reviewed on a rolling basis. The Energy Security and Climate Change role closes Friday 23 October 2026. If you want one of these, apply now rather than waiting for summer.
Winter and spring terms start. Use this stretch to prepare a one-page resume, a cover letter and a short writing sample, because finalists may be asked for samples and references.
Summer 2027 postings are expected, per CSIS's FAQ. Roles are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply in the first days of the posting.
Rolling review continues. In May 2026 an applicant noticed that some summer 2026 roles were still open late in the month, which fits a rolling process but isn't something CSIS guarantees.
Summer term runs June to August in Washington, DC. Fall 2027 postings are expected around July 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
CSIS reviews on a rolling basis. Postings we read say applicants "will be reviewed on a rolling basis" or that "the review process will continue until the position is filled," and the FAQ says roles close once the hiring manager starts review or fills the position. A role can therefore close without notice.
Some postings also carry hard dates. The Energy Security and Climate Change role is due Friday 23 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST. The Freeman Chair posting asked for applications by 25 September 2026, and the Trustee Chair posting cites a July 19 deadline with no year, which looks like leftover text from an earlier cycle. Five of the 10 roles are still labelled Fall 2026 even though fall began in September, so check each one before applying.
For summer 2027, apply in the first days after the February posting.
Which CSIS Internship Programs Should You Target?
CSIS hires interns into individual research programs and offices rather than one central program. Eligibility and hours change by posting, so read the one you want. These are examples from the current board.
| Program | Focus | Duration and hours | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communications (Office of External Relations) | Media advisories, events, social media | Winter/spring: Nov 2026 – May 2027, full-time, in person | Communication, attention to detail, social media analytics |
| Data Visualization Design (iDeas Lab) | Turning datasets into charts and infographics | Term not labelled; hours not stated in the posting | Flourish, Datawrapper, design background |
| Energy Security and Climate Change | Energy markets, transition, geopolitics | 35 hours a week, in person four days a week; due 23 Oct 2026 | Research, data collection, writing |
| Global Health Policy Center | Health security and global health policy | 28–35 hours a week (Fall 2026 label) | Research, memos, Microsoft Office |
| Strategic Technologies Program | Technology policy research | Winter 2026; 3.0 GPA minimum | Policy research, clear technical writing |
| Economics Program | Trade, supply chains, global economic governance | Fall 2026 label; junior standing or above | Econometrics, data visualization, writing |
The full list is on the CSIS careers page. CSIS also fills other program-specific roles each term that aren't shown here.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
CSIS publishes a general rule in its FAQ, and each posting adds its own:
• Who: undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates.
• FAQ minimum: "once you have completed two years of undergraduate credits you are eligible."
• Posting-level class year: many postings are stricter. Energy, Global Health, Korea Chair and Economics ask for at least junior standing; Freeman Chair and Trustee Chair ask for senior or above.
• GPA: some postings set a floor (3.0 for Strategic Technologies and the Trustee Chair, 3.5 for the Korea Chair). Others state none.
• Work authorization: you must be eligible to work in the US. Citizenship isn't required, and CSIS doesn't sponsor visas for interns.
• Documents: a cover letter and resume; finalists may be asked for a writing sample and references.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?
Only where the posting says so. CSIS's FAQ sets no GPA, and six of the nine postings we read state none, but the Strategic Technologies and Trustee Chair roles ask for at least a 3.0 and the Korea Chair role a 3.5. Read the specific posting, since the class-year bar is often stricter than the FAQ's two years of credits.
What Skills Does CSIS Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
CSIS skills are set posting by posting. Reading nine of the ten intern postings on the board shows a consistent core: clear writing, research, supporting events, and handling data. Some roles add language skills, such as Korean for the Korea Chair and advanced Chinese reading for the Freeman and Trustee Chairs.
Several postings ask for a writing sample, either up front or from finalists, so a short sample on a policy topic helps more than a long list of tools.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
These remote Externships build the research, communication and data skills CSIS postings ask for. They support your application and don't replace it.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |

For CSIS itself, the strongest preparation is a tight writing sample and a cover letter written for the specific program.
What Is the CSIS Application and Interview Process Like?
CSIS describes the process on its FAQ page and in each posting:
1. Pick a posting. Find the role on the job board embedded in the CSIS careers page and read its eligibility, hours and any stated deadline.
2. Apply online. Upload a cover letter and resume (CSIS says to address the letter "To Whom It May Concern") and any other documents the posting requires.
3. Rolling review. CSIS reviews applications as they arrive, and a role can close once review starts or the position is filled.
4. Finalist materials. Finalists may be asked for writing samples and references; an unofficial transcript is accepted when one is required.
5. Offer. Selected candidates start with the term. CSIS doesn't publish its interview format.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has little first-hand CSIS interview detail, so these two cards are about timing only. Each is one thread's account, paraphrased.
A commenter in a think-tank recruiting thread said CSIS summer internship applications open around February and spring applications around October, matching what CSIS's own FAQ says.
In May 2026 an applicant noticed that CSIS still had applications open for some summer 2026 internships and wondered whether it was too late to start. That fits CSIS's rolling review.
How Do You Stand Out for a CSIS Internship?
Three moves, all before you hit submit.
First, apply early and match the program. Review is rolling, and class year, GPA and hours differ by posting, so a cover letter written for one program beats a general one.
Second, have a writing sample ready. Finalists may be asked for one, and some postings, like the Freeman Chair role, ask for a short policy writing sample up front.
Third, keep your work authorization in order. CSIS requires US work eligibility and doesn't sponsor visas, so international students should line up CPT or OPT with their school.
On what comes after: CSIS doesn't publish a return-offer or conversion rate, so treat the internship as exposure and networking rather than a guaranteed offer.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 CSIS internship?
No. The summer 2026 term has started and finished. CSIS has winter and spring 2026-27 internships posted now, reviewed on a rolling basis, and its FAQ points to February for summer postings, so expect summer 2027 roles around February 2027 rather than any earlier.
When do CSIS summer internship applications open?
CSIS's FAQ says internships are typically posted in February for the summer term, which runs June to August. It hasn't announced summer 2027 dates, so treat February 2027 as an expectation. Roles are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as a posting goes up.
Is there a deadline for CSIS internships?
Usually not for the whole program. Roles stay open until review starts or the position is filled, so earlier is better. Individual postings can state a date: the Energy Security and Climate Change role is due Friday 23 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
Are CSIS internships paid?
Yes. The postings we read pay $18.40 an hour for current undergraduates, $19.40 with a bachelor's degree and $20.40 with a master's degree. CSIS's FAQ says interns receive an hourly wage, and it doesn't provide housing, though it points students to a third-party intern housing service.
Who is eligible for a CSIS internship?
Undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates. CSIS's FAQ says you're eligible once you've completed two years of undergraduate credits, but many postings ask for junior standing or higher, and some ask for seniors or graduate students. Check the class-year line in the posting you want.
Is there a GPA minimum for CSIS internships?
Only in some postings. Strategic Technologies and the Trustee Chair role ask for at least a 3.0, and the Korea Chair role asks for a 3.5. Other postings we read state no GPA, and CSIS's FAQ doesn't set a general minimum, so the requirement depends on the program.
Can international students apply for CSIS internships?
Yes, with US work authorization. CSIS doesn't require citizenship, but it doesn't sponsor visas for interns, so international students typically rely on CPT or OPT arranged through their school. Confirm your authorization covers the full internship dates before you accept an offer.
Where are CSIS internships located?
Washington, DC. All 10 live intern postings on 16 October 2026 list DC, and the ones that describe a work model are in person or on site. We found no remote intern track on the board, so plan to be in the city for the term.
CSIS roles for winter and spring are open now, and summer 2027 should follow around February. Apply to a current-term role if one fits, and if you want to build research and communication proof first, a remote Externship is one way to start.
