Last updated: October 2026
Brookhaven's flagship student internships run through a national Department of Energy application, and it's open right now. The SULI and CCI summer 2027 term opened on 14 October 2026 and closes at 5:00 pm ET on 6 January 2027, for a 10-week paid internship at the lab in Upton, New York. Brookhaven's own job board lists no intern or student requisitions, so the DOE portal is the way in. In plain words: you apply between October 2026 and January 2027, you intern in summer 2027. The lab lists a $650 weekly stipend, and applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents with a 3.0 GPA.

What Is a Brookhaven National Laboratory Internship?
A Brookhaven National Laboratory internship is a paid research placement at a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science laboratory in Upton, New York. The lab is managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, a partnership of Battelle and the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University. Most students arrive through the DOE's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) or the Community College Internship (CCI), national programs with 17 participating DOE laboratories and facilities. Interns work under Brookhaven scientists and engineers on DOE-mission projects and present their results orally or in writing.

When Do Brookhaven National Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The summer 2027 term is the long-lead option: DOE opened applications on 14 October 2026, about 7.5 months before a 1 June start, and closes them on 6 January, about 5 months before it. DOE lists offers from 3 February 2027, with all offers complete around 14 April, and says the dates are tentative. The DOE key dates page shows fall and spring terms posting on a different rhythm, so if you miss January the next doors are the fall and spring terms.
SULI and CCI summer 2027 applications are open until 6 January 2027, 5:00 pm ET. DOE hosts application workshops on 4 and 5 November, a Virtual Internship Fair on 12 November and office hours on 2, 9 and 16 December.
Summer 2027 deadline. Recommendations count toward it, and DOE says no materials are accepted after the system closes.
Expected: offers begin on or around 3 February and all DOE offers are completed around 14 April. DOE marks these dates tentative; labs make the selections from the applicant pool.
Expected: the SULI fall 2027 window opens in March and closes in May, projected from the fall 2026 window (12 March to 20 May 2026). The spring 2028 window is expected around July to September 2027.
The 10-week summer term runs in late spring and summer at the lab. Brookhaven hasn't published exact start and end dates. Interns live in on-campus housing if they come from 50 or more miles away.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
This is a hard-deadline program, not a rolling one: the application system closes at 5:00 pm ET on 6 January 2027, and recommenders must submit before then too. Apply early anyway, since you need transcripts, essays and recommendation letters, and the November workshops answer questions before you submit. If you miss it, the fall 2027 and spring 2028 terms are separate windows, and all offers depend on funding.
Which Brookhaven National Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?
Brookhaven offers a few student routes. The two DOE programs are the main paid ones.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| SULI (Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship) | Research on DOE-mission projects under Brookhaven scientists and engineers; 2-year and 4-year students and recent graduates | 10 weeks in summer; 16 weeks in fall or spring | Physical science, engineering, data analysis, communication |
| CCI (Community College Internship) | Same lab environment for community college students | 10 weeks in spring, summer or fall | Science or technical coursework, lab skills |
| SURP (Supplemental Undergraduate Research Program) | Research placement; participants need their own funding or a funding Brookhaven researcher | Varies | Varies by group |
| Mini-Semester | One-week program for commuters; transportation and housing not provided | 1 week | Introductory research exposure |
Full details are on the BNL SULI page and the CCI page. The stipend, GPA and deadline are DOE program rules that apply across participating labs, but the housing terms are Brookhaven's. You can rank up to two laboratories on the application.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Eligibility comes from Brookhaven's SULI and CCI pages and the DOE program.
• Citizenship: U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder).
• SULI enrollment: a full-time student at an accredited institution with at least one completed semester when you apply, or a recent graduate of an undergraduate program.
• CCI enrollment: a community college or accredited two-year college student, full or part time, with at least one completed semester.
• GPA and age: a minimum 3.0 GPA, and 18 or older when the internship begins.
• Practical: active health insurance for the whole program, and a REAL ID for on-site access. The pages describe no security clearance.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?
The Brookhaven pages list a minimum GPA of 3.0 for both SULI and CCI, so treat it as a floor. Above the floor, laboratory scientists choose interns from the applicant pool, and DOE says offers depend on funding. Neither Brookhaven nor DOE publishes an acceptance rate, so the strength of your essays, recommendations and research fit is what you can influence.
What Skills Does Brookhaven National Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Brookhaven doesn't publish a skills list for interns. The lab says interns work "under the guidance of scientific and engineering staff" on DOE-mission projects, and its own page features past profiles of a SULI intern studying machine learning and a CCI intern studying conjugated polymers. Interns on Reddit named high-energy physics, electrical engineering and nuclear physics placements. Strong coursework in your field, data analysis and clear technical writing are the common threads.
Note: Skill percentages are left out because SULI placements are matched by project and Brookhaven publishes no intern job descriptions to count. The details above come from the BNL SULI page and intern accounts, read 16 October 2026.
How Is Demand for Research Interns Moving Right Now?

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row ties a research skill to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to describe in your SULI essays.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific data analysis | Interns analyze and present results from DOE-mission projects | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Public-dataset research | Research projects end with an oral or written presentation | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics |
| Machine learning and data extraction | BNL's page features a SULI intern studying machine learning | Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights |
| Programming and automation | Engineering and physics placements rely on scripting and tooling | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
None of these Externships is connected to Brookhaven or the Department of Energy. They help because the application asks you to explain your interests and preparation, and a completed project gives you something concrete.
What Is the Brookhaven National Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the DOE and Brookhaven pages.
1. Apply once on the DOE portal. The application includes transcripts, essays and recommendations, and the summer 2027 deadline is 6 January 2027, 5:00 pm ET.
2. Rank your laboratories. You can choose up to two. Applicants on Reddit say the lab's scientists pick from the list, and those who contacted a scientist beforehand were easier to spot.
3. Wait for offers. DOE lists offers from 3 February 2027 through about 14 April. Offers have come through the DOE portal.
4. Accept and prepare. Arrange health insurance and a REAL ID, and confirm housing if you live 50 or more miles away.
Community college students apply through CCI, not SULI.
What Students on Reddit Say
Past and incoming interns on r/REU mostly talk about housing, placements and how quiet the area is.
Past interns say the on-campus dorms feel dated but clean, with shared kitchens and laundry, and that the dorm cost is covered if you live more than 50 miles away. Bring your own cooking supplies and expect roughly 40-hour weeks.
Accepted SULI interns reported placements in high-energy physics, electrical engineering and nuclear physics at the Electron-Ion Collider, and said the lab is remote enough that meeting other interns early helps.
A former intern highly recommended the summer but called the area a bit boring. They went to New York City nearly every weekend and advised bringing a car if you can.
How Do You Stand Out for a Brookhaven Internship?
First, put Brookhaven first if you want it, and name the research groups that match your coursework in your essays. Second, ask recommenders early, because their letters count toward the 6 January deadline. Third, use DOE's November workshops and the 12 November Virtual Internship Fair to sharpen the application. Brookhaven doesn't publish its class size, acceptance rate or conversion rate, so ignore unsourced claims about how selective a lab is.
