Last updated: October 2026
AtkinsRéalis, the engineering firm formerly known as SNC-Lavalin, posted most of its US summer 2027 intern class in the first three weeks of September, and it's still adding roles. On 3 October 2026 its own Workday board carried 65 US intern postings, 56 for summer 2027 and 9 for spring 2027, in 13 states from Tampa and Orlando to Denver, Henderson, Austin, Bothell and New York. Several say "no application deadline applies." In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027, or in spring 2027 if you can take a 16-week term.
Every posting publishes its pay: $25 to $31 an hour for most engineering roles and $23 to $29 for resilience, archaeology and planning roles. Interns join Explore, the firm's internship program, and its US internships page says many interns "receive their official offer letter before graduation."

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. They sit alongside an AtkinsRéalis application, not in place of one: the Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture Externship builds the data skills behind the firm's data collection and Power BI work, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the budgeting behind its cost management and project controls internships. What Is an AtkinsRéalis Internship?
An AtkinsRéalis internship is a paid placement in one of the firm's US offices through Explore, "the AtkinsRéalis internship program" for college students in STEM fields. Interns support engineers on transportation, water, aviation, bridge and infrastructure projects: data collection, modeling and calculations, drawings and exhibits, plan sets and reports. Resilience interns work on disaster-recovery and grant programs.
The program page offers "12-week summer internships or 16-week spring and fall internships," and postings list client site visits and weekly lunch-and-learns. The company took its current name when SNC-Lavalin announced the rebrand on 12 September 2023.

When Do AtkinsRéalis Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
AtkinsRéalis posted its first US summer 2027 role on 7 September 2026 and 22 more the next day. Most of the rest followed by 24 September, and a second, smaller wave has run since: Bothell, Washington and Denver structural on 28 September, Miami building mechanical and a Tampa construction inspector aide on 1 October, and a digital delivery and BIM internship across four offices on 2 October. That's about eight to nine months before a May or June start.
Offices often post the same role twice, once for spring 2027 and once for summer 2027, such as ITS and traffic engineering in Orlando, Raleigh and Edison, New Jersey. Last cycle, one student posted AtkinsRéalis summer offers in mid-February, so hiring may run into winter.
Applications are open right now: 56 summer 2027 postings and 9 spring 2027 postings across 13 states. Two first-wave postings, a Tempe data science internship and an Atlanta transportation planning internship, are no longer listed, so don't wait on the one you want.
Rolling review, office by office. New postings are still appearing, so check the board weekly and apply in the first week a role in your target office goes up.
Spring 2027 internships start, 16 weeks long. Summer offers may still be going out: last cycle, one civil engineering student had AtkinsRéalis and Kiewit summer offers in mid-February.
Fall 2027 internship postings are expected, based on fall 2026 postings that were live by May and June 2026. Summer interns start in May or June.
The 12-week summer internship, office-based with client site visits and weekly lunch-and-learns. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post in September 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
AtkinsRéalis says it outright: "Applications for this position are accepted on a rolling basis; no application deadline applies," on 11 of its 65 US postings. Rolling means offices fill as good applicants arrive, and it shows. In five days, two first-wave postings came down while seven new ones went up.
Each posting is one office's role, so a Denver roadway internship and a Raleigh roadway internship are separate applications. If you'd work in either city, apply to both now, and if your school allows a spring term, look at the nine spring 2027 postings too.
Which AtkinsRéalis Internship Programs Should You Target?
Explore covers every AtkinsRéalis US internship, and the title names the track and term. These are the main groups live on 3 October 2026:
| Track | Focus | Live postings | Listed pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITS, traffic and transportation | Signal design, ITS and tolling, roadway and highway design, rail and transit, transportation planning | 21, incl. Orlando, Tampa, Raleigh, Edison, Denver, Austin, El Paso, Henderson, Atlanta, Novi, Dallas | $25 to $31/hr (planning $23 to $29) |

Denver, Atlanta, Henderson, Austin, Nashville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Houston, Bothell | $25 to $31/hr |
| Resilience and emergency management | Disaster recovery and hazard mitigation programs, grant documentation, Power BI tracking | 7: Tallahassee, Tampa, Orlando (2), Austin, New York, Atlanta | $23 to $29/hr |
| Cost, controls and construction | Cost management, project controls, estimating and scheduling, construction engineering and inspection | 11, incl. New York, Ft. Lauderdale, Denver, Austin, Oklahoma City, Tampa | $25 to $31/hr |

Spring 2027 postings are in ITS and traffic (Orlando, Tampa, Raleigh, Edison, Atlanta tolling), bridge (Miami), cost management (New York), environmental planning (Tampa) and project controls (Ft. Lauderdale).
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The main gate is credit hours, not GPA. Here's what the 65 US postings say:
• Credits: 49 postings require completed credit hours by the start; most engineering roles say "Must have completed 60 hours towards a civil or environmental engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship."
• Experience: "No experience is generally required if accepted into an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in a related technical field."
• GPA: only one posting, the Atlanta spring 2027 tolling internship, sets one (3.0, with 36 completed hours).
• Majors: STEM for most tracks; resilience and emergency management roles also accept public administration, planning, GIS, economics, finance, data analytics and communications. No posting mentions visa sponsorship either way.

Can Freshmen Apply to AtkinsRéalis Internships?
Usually not for engineering roles. Sixty completed credit hours by the start date means roughly two years of full-time study, so most applicants are rising juniors or older by summer 2027. A sophomore applying now would qualify only if they reach 60 hours by May.
The Atlanta spring tolling posting asks for 36 hours instead, and non-engineering tracks such as resilience vary, so check the posting.
What Skills Does AtkinsRéalis Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Once the boilerplate is set aside, the postings share a clear core: technical reports and specifications, plans, drawings and exhibits, data collection and analysis, and engineering calculations, with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD as the most-named tools. Transportation postings add MicroStation, Civil 3D and OpenRoads; resilience postings add Power BI, SharePoint and FEMA's grant systems.
Pick the track you're applying to and match its tools; the Denver water posting, for example, asks for "AutoCAD or MicroStation (preferred)."

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
AtkinsRéalis is hiring on the same fall clock as its biggest competitors. Apply to the offices you want now, and expect transportation and water postings elsewhere to fill in the same weeks.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (87 postings in September, 36 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
The engineering comes from coursework, but the work around it can be practiced now:
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data collection, analysis and dashboards | "contributing to data collection, modeling, calculations, and engineering evaluations"; Power BI on resilience postings | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Cost management and project controls | Cost management, project controls and estimator/scheduler internships in New York, Ft. Lauderdale and Denver | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis, Private Company Valuation |
| Connected infrastructure and ITS systems | ITS and traffic, tolling, and instrumentation and controls internships | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
None of these replaces a traffic or hydraulics course, but each ends in a finished, data-heavy project you can walk an interviewer through.
What Is the AtkinsRéalis Application and Interview Process Like?
AtkinsRéalis doesn't publish an intern interview process. This is the path its postings and community reports describe:
1. Search the US early-careers jobs and filter by office; each posting is one office and one term, so spring and summer versions of a role are separate applications.
2. Check the credit-hours line before applying; most engineering postings need 60 completed hours by the start date.
3. Apply on Workday. Postings are rolling, and several say no deadline applies.
4. Interview with the office. Community reports are thin here: one commenter who went through the process called it poor, mostly because of HR, while saying the eventual offer was comparable to similar firms. Follow up politely if you hear nothing.
5. Offer. Interns join the Explore program; the program page says many receive a full-time offer letter before graduation.
Since AtkinsRéalis is a former SNC-Lavalin business with a large Florida base, knowing the local office's main clients, such as state transportation departments or the Georgia toll authority on the Atlanta tolling posting, gives you something specific to say.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has a few first-hand AtkinsRéalis intern threads, mostly comparing offers.
A civil engineering student weighing AtkinsRéalis and Kiewit summer offers in late February listed the AtkinsRéalis one as FEMA floodplain work at $25 an hour, with a full-time position after graduation if they met expectations. A commenter said they'd only heard good things from people working there.
When the same student first asked, a commenter who works with both firms said AtkinsRéalis would pay more than Kiewit, but urged picking the discipline that interests you rather than the pay.
Commenters said Atkins had been hiring heavily and pointed out that Florida, long the base of PBS&J before Atkins acquired it, is still its biggest US hub.
How Do You Stand Out for an AtkinsRéalis Internship?
AtkinsRéalis doesn't publish applicant numbers or a class size, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves fit how it hires:
1. Apply office by office, now. Postings are rolling and already turning over. Pick every office you'd work in, Florida alone has 20 postings, and apply this month.
2. Match the track's tools. Transportation offices name MicroStation, Civil 3D and OpenRoads; water roles want AutoCAD or MicroStation; resilience roles name Power BI and SharePoint. One class project in the right tool beats a long software list.
3. Consider spring. Nine spring 2027 postings run 16 weeks from January. If your school allows a semester away, that's a less crowded door, and a strong spring intern is well placed for summer.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
AtkinsRéalis applicants usually also look at other transportation and infrastructure consultancies:

- Jacobsinfrastructure and advisory consultancy with a large fall intern waveGuide →
- WSPtransportation consultancy with a similar office-by-office modelGuide →
- HNTBtransportation, tolling and bridge engineering firmGuide →
- Kimley-Horncivil and traffic consultancy with a big Florida presenceGuide →

No. Summer 2026 internships have ended, but summer 2027 applications are open now: 56 US postings, plus 9 spring 2027 postings that start in January and run 16 weeks. Every one lists pay, and several say no application deadline applies, so apply to the offices you want this month.
When do AtkinsRéalis summer 2027 internships open?
They're open now. AtkinsRéalis posted its first US summer 2027 role on 7 September 2026, most by 24 September, and added seven more between 28 September and 2 October. Applications are rolling, and two first-wave postings had already come down by 3 October.
How much do AtkinsRéalis interns get paid?
Every US posting lists pay. Most engineering, aviation, bridge, cost and project controls roles pay $25 to $31 an hour; resilience and emergency management, archaeology and planning roles pay $23 to $29; landscape architecture in Atlanta pays $22 to $28; and architecture in Alexandria, Virginia pays $19 to $25.
How long are AtkinsRéalis internships?
Summer internships run 12 weeks, and spring and fall internships run 16 weeks, according to the Explore program page. Nine spring 2027 postings are open now and start in January. Fall 2027 postings are expected around April to June 2027, based on when the fall 2026 roles were live.
What are the requirements for an AtkinsRéalis internship?
Most engineering postings require 60 completed credit hours toward an ABET-accredited civil, environmental or related degree by the start date, and say no prior experience is generally required. Only the Atlanta spring tolling posting sets a GPA, 3.0. No posting mentions visa sponsorship, so ask the recruiter.
Is AtkinsRéalis the same company as SNC-Lavalin?
Yes. SNC-Lavalin announced its rebrand to AtkinsRéalis on 12 September 2023, combining the Atkins name with "Réalis," inspired by Montréal, where the company is based. Its US internships run through the Explore program, and Florida, the old PBS&J base, is its largest US intern location.
Can non-engineering majors apply to AtkinsRéalis?
Yes, for some roles. The resilience and emergency management internships accept emergency management, public administration, planning, GIS, economics, finance, data analytics and communications majors, and pay $23 to $29 an hour. Architecture, landscape architecture and archaeology internships are open to students in those fields.
Do AtkinsRéalis interns get full-time offers?
Often, by the company's account. The Explore program page says many interns turn the internship into a full-time offer and receive their official offer letter before graduation, though no rate is published. A 2025 intern on Reddit was told a full-time role would follow if they met expectations.
AtkinsRéalis' postings are rolling and already turning over, so apply to your offices this month, then use the weeks before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
