Last updated: October 2026
On 3 October 2026 HNTB had 124 student postings live on its own Workday board, and 112 of them are for summer 2027. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. The detail most applicants miss is that 23 of those 112 summer postings are closed to newcomers, marked for current or former HNTB interns only. HNTB posted its returning-intern roles first, on 4 August, then opened roles to everyone from late August, and it was still adding them in October: eight New York internships went up on 1 October alone.
HNTB is the employee-owned infrastructure design firm founded in Kansas City in 1914, behind highways, bridges, toll roads, airports and stadiums. On the 55 college postings that publish an hourly range, pay runs from $19.12 to $39.50 depending on state, and 30 of HNTB's full-time new-grad postings are reserved for its own former interns.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. Do one alongside your HNTB applications, not instead of them: the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship works on connected water infrastructure, close to HNTB's water and tolling technology work, and the Arceh Children's Environmental Health Analytics Externship builds the environmental data skills HNTB's planning interns use. What Is an HNTB Internship?
An HNTB internship is a paid summer placement in one of HNTB's offices, where you work on a project team for transportation and infrastructure clients: roadway, bridge, aviation, rail and transit, water, tolling and planning. HNTB's university careers page describes formal and informal mentoring, a first-day orientation with an "intern onboarding plan" you work through with your supervisor, and Lunch & Learn sessions with technical experts.
HNTB runs it as a two-tier pipeline. Returning interns get their own postings, posted first, and most of the firm's new-grad jobs are reserved for them, which makes a first HNTB internship the main route into the firm.

When Do HNTB Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
HNTB posts its summer wave in two steps. Returning-intern postings, open only to current or former HNTB interns, went up first, from 4 August 2026. Postings open to everyone followed from 25 August, peaked in early and mid-September, and kept coming into October. That's about nine months before a late-May start.
Last cycle shows how fast seats go. Interns on Reddit describe interviews in October and mid-November 2025, one accepted offer by 24 October, another offer in mid-December, and a July applicant who was turned down. A few offices also run nearer doors: three spring 2027 co-ops in Boston, multi-term co-ops in Indianapolis and Houston, and four fall 2026 roles.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 89 summer postings open to new applicants, plus 23 for returning HNTB interns. None has a deadline, and new postings are still being added. Apply to the offices where you can live and work in person.
Interviews and offers for summer 2027, if the last cycle repeats: interns describe one or two 30-minute interviews in October and November and offers by mid-December. Seats fill office by office.
Remaining summer 2027 offices are expected to finish hiring. Boston's spring 2027 co-ops start their term, and Indianapolis and Houston multi-term co-ops begin.
Summer 2027 internships are expected to start, based on last cycle's interns. Day one is an orientation and an onboarding plan with your supervisor.
The internship itself, in person on a project team. Returning-intern postings for summer 2028 are expected around early August 2027, ahead of open postings in late August to September.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
HNTB's window is rolling, but it doesn't stay roomy for long. Returning interns get a three-week head start, because their postings go up first, and last cycle's open-applicant seats were being filled from October: one water resources intern had already accepted an offer by 24 October 2025, and another intern interviewed in mid-November and had an offer by mid-December.
The other end of the window is unforgiving. A student who applied in July for summer 2026 was turned down. No HNTB posting states a deadline, so the practical one is when your target office fills its seats, and most do that before winter break.
Which HNTB Internship Programs Should You Target?
HNTB doesn't brand its internship; each office posts the roles it needs. These are the tracks open to new applicants for summer 2027:
| Track | Focus | Term | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Roadway, bridge design and inspection, water and drainage, traffic, aviation, rail and transit, structural, electrical | Summer 2027 | Civil, structural and electrical students; the largest track |
| Planning and environmental | Transportation and transit planning, environmental planning, GIS, urban design, archaeology and history | Summer 2027 | Planning, environmental and geography students |
| Construction services | Construction engineering and inspection, program management | Summer 2027; Houston co-op | Civil and construction management students |
| Finance, communications, technology | Project finance and controls, communications and graphics, tolling technology, AI business process | Summer 2027 | Business, communications, design and computing students |
| Civil Engineering Micro-Internship | Eight weeks, in person five days a week, Dallas and Plano | Summer 2027 | Freshman and sophomore engineering students |
| Co-ops | Roadway, stormwater, traffic (Boston); multi-term roles (Indianapolis, Houston) | Spring 2027 onward | Students in a co-op program |
Search the HNTB University Careers board by city. Same-titled postings, such as "Intern Engineer - Summer 2027", are separate requisitions for separate offices.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
HNTB's postings set a few firm rules and leave the rest open:
• Enrollment: engineering postings require current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program and prefer two completed years. The micro-internship prefers freshmen and sophomores.
• Returning-only postings: 23 summer 2027 postings are marked for current or former HNTB interns only. If you haven't interned at HNTB, skip them.
• Sponsorship: every one of the 124 student postings says "Visa sponsorship is not available for this position."
• Relocation: 84 of 124 postings say relocation and housing aren't provided, so apply where you can live.
• GPA: no posting states a GPA requirement.

Do You Need Prior Engineering Experience?
No. The engineering template asks for basic engineering calculations, an interest in transportation and infrastructure, and the ability to accept direction from peers and supervisors. AutoCAD or MicroStation experience is listed as preferred, not required.
That's why the micro-internship exists: HNTB built an eight-week Dallas program specifically for first- and second-year students who haven't done an internship yet.
What Skills Does HNTB Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
HNTB's engineering postings share one template, so the same lines repeat across offices: engineering drawings and documents, shop drawings and submittals, basic engineering calculations, and Microsoft Office. The planning, finance and communications postings swap those for GIS, Excel and design software.
The one tool line that matters is "AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience", listed as preferred. Several engineering postings also ask for a stated interest in transportation and infrastructure.

vs 207 in August
HNTB's peers posted in the same September surge, and most of them hire in person by office too. Apply to the HNTB offices you want this month, and to a few rivals in the same cities.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each of these HNTB lines can be practiced before an interview:
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Water and tolling technology systems | Water and drainage engineering postings; Toll Technology and Tolling intern postings | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Project finance and controls | Finance Intern, Project Controls and Project Finance Assistant postings | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis, Private Company Valuation |
| Construction services and program management | Construction Engineering & Inspection and Program Management intern postings | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
HNTB's interviews are mostly behavioral, so a finished project gives you a concrete story to tell when they ask how you handled a problem with missing information.
What Is the HNTB Application and Interview Process Like?
HNTB doesn't publish an intern interview guide. Its postings and first-hand Reddit reports describe this path:
1. Find the posting for your office. Search the University Careers board by city; most postings cover one office or a metro cluster.
2. Apply through Workday. You'll need a Candidate Home account. Apply to each office you'd genuinely work in.
3. Interviews. A water resources intern describes two 30-minute interviews: one with a regional manager and two engineers, then one with a new grad and another engineer.
4. Expect behavioral questions. Interns report questions about their resume, how they got into engineering, teamwork and what they'd do without enough information, not technical problems.
5. Offer. Last cycle's offers came from October to mid-December. Questions after an offer go to the HR contact on the letter.
Know the practice area before the call. An aviation planning applicant was advised to learn airport planning vocabulary, and a highway applicant was asked why that specific field.
What Students on Reddit Say
HNTB intern threads on r/civilengineering are unusually first-hand, with interns describing their own interviews and offers.
A water resources intern had already accepted an HNTB offer by late October after two 30-minute interviews, first with a regional manager and two engineers, then with a new grad and another engineer. The questions were standard: why the field, software experience, teamwork and past internships.
A current intern interviewed in mid-November and had an offer by mid-December. A student who applied in July for the same summer was turned down, which commenters read as a sign that HNTB's class fills in the fall.
Former interns say that if the team manager liked you and there was a spot, interns generally got a full-time offer, and one did two summers before going full time. Commenters add that HNTB prefers to keep developing interns it has already trained.
How Do You Stand Out for an HNTB Internship?
HNTB doesn't publish applicant numbers or a conversion rate, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves fit how it hires:
1. Target the open postings, by office. Filter out the 23 returning-only summer postings, then apply to the open ones in cities where you can live, since most postings offer no relocation or housing.
2. Prepare stories, not calculus. Interns describe behavioral interviews about problem solving, teamwork and why the practice area. Have one story about working through incomplete information, because that question comes up.
3. Treat the first internship as the long game. Returning interns get their own postings first, and 30 of HNTB's new-grad jobs are reserved for them. Freshmen and sophomores should look at the Dallas micro-internship to get in early.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
HNTB applicants usually also look at other transportation and infrastructure firms:
- Kimley-Horncivil and transportation consultancy that Reddit applicants compare directly with HNTBGuide →
- Burns & McDonnellemployee-owned engineering firm, also headquartered in Kansas CityGuide →
- AECOMlargest US design-firm peer, with heavy transportation overlapGuide →
- Jacobsinfrastructure consultancy across transportation, water and aviationGuide →
- WSPtransportation and power design consultancy, the former Parsons BrinckerhoffGuide →

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 HNTB internship?
No. HNTB's summer 2026 internships have ended, but summer 2027 applications are open now: 112 summer 2027 postings were live on 3 October 2026, 89 of them open to new applicants. None has a deadline. Boston also has three spring 2027 co-ops open for students who can work a spring term.
When should I apply for an HNTB summer 2027 internship?
Now. Open postings went up from late August 2026 and are still being added. No posting states a deadline, but last cycle interns interviewed in October and November and held offers by mid-December, and a July applicant was turned down. Apply in October to every office you'd work in.
How much do HNTB interns make?
HNTB publishes state pay ranges on its postings: $19.12 to $39.50 an hour across the 55 college postings that show one. Examples include $23.18 to $34.76 in Illinois and $25.28 to $37.92 in Massachusetts and Washington. Postings in Texas, Florida and Missouri show no range.
Can I apply if I've never interned at HNTB?
Yes, to most summer 2027 postings. Of the 112 live on 3 October 2026, 89 are open to anyone. The other 23 are marked for current or former HNTB interns only, so filter those out, along with the new-grad jobs that carry the same restriction.
Does HNTB sponsor visas for interns?
No. Every one of the 124 student postings live on 3 October 2026 says visa sponsorship isn't available for the position. International students need their own US work authorization, such as CPT or OPT, before applying, and should confirm their eligibility with their school's international office first.
What is the HNTB internship interview like?
Interns describe one or two 30-minute interviews with engineers and a manager, mostly behavioral: your resume, why you chose the field, teamwork, and how you'd handle missing information. Technical questions are rare in these reports, but you should know the practice area you applied to, such as aviation planning or roadway design.
Are there options for freshmen or for spring terms?
Yes. HNTB runs an eight-week Civil Engineering Micro-Internship in Dallas and Plano built for freshman and sophomore engineering students, in person five days a week. Boston has three spring 2027 co-ops, and Indianapolis and Houston post multi-term co-ops that start in 2027.
Does an HNTB internship lead to a full-time job?
Often, though HNTB doesn't publish a conversion rate. On 3 October 2026, 30 of its full-time new-grad postings were reserved for current or former HNTB interns, and former interns on Reddit say those who did well and had a spot open generally got an offer.
HNTB's summer 2027 seats fill office by office this fall, so apply now, then use the weeks before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
