American Family Insurance is the nation's 12th-largest property and casualty insurer, a Fortune 500 company (No. 226) with $19.5 billion in 2025 revenue and roughly 10,500 employees, and it runs a 10 to 14 week paid summer internship from its Madison, Wisconsin headquarters. The summer 2026 cohort spanned at least ten distinct tracks, from corporate finance and venture capital to quantum computing.

So where does that leave you in September 2026? Right before the window. Last cycle's postings appeared between September and November with deadlines as early as November 4, so you apply in fall 2026 and intern in summer 2027, the year AmFam turns 100.

Summer 2027 postings aren't live yet; based on the summer 2026 cycle, expect a burst between October and November 2026 with some technology roles as late as January 2027, and deadlines only weeks after posting. Join the Talent Community now so the alert reaches you the day the roles go up.

AmFam's business-side internships are built on financial analysis: the Corporate Finance role asks for forecasting and data modeling, and the Venture Capital role has interns writing investment memos and evaluating term sheets. While you wait for the fall postings, build that evidence with the Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship or the HP Tech Ventures Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis Externship, which mirrors the deal-flow work at AmFam's Institute for Corporate and Social Impact. Both are short remote Externships. Explore all Externships.

What Is an American Family Insurance Internship?

An American Family Insurance internship is a 10 to 14 week paid summer placement in a single corporate program that assigns students across ten or more functional areas. Each intern gets one or two mentors, works on a project the company describes as making "a difference at our company, with our customers, and in our communities," and presents results to management at the end. Most roles are hybrid in Madison, with Boston listed as an option for some technology and communications positions, and a one-time hiring bonus may help with housing depending on how far you live from an AmFam office.

And AmFam isn't a typical insurer. It's a private mutual company owned by policyholders, it runs a venture arm that invests in social-impact startups, and its 2026 intern class included a quantum computing track.

When Do American Family Insurance Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

AmFam recruits on a fall calendar with a six to eight month lead: postings go live in a burst, each with its own deadline, and interns start the following May. Nothing is posted yet for summer 2027, which means the next eight weeks are for preparation.

So here's the expected sequence, built from the ten summer 2026 job descriptions captured on Prosple and Glassdoor's intern interview data.

Now · September 2026YOU ARE HERE

The AmFam intern Workday board shows zero postings, which is normal for early fall. Sign up for the Talent Community at flows.beamery.com/afienterprise/campus-recruitment, decide which two or three tracks fit your major, and get your resume ready, because the application form has no cover letter upload.

Oct – Nov 2026EXPECTED

Expected posting burst for summer 2027. In the 2026 cycle the Venture Capital and Communications roles closed November 4 and 7, and Corporate Finance closed November 20, which means those postings went live in September and October. Apply the week your role appears.

HP Tech Ventures Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis Externship, for the deal-flow and memo-writing skills the Venture Capital track asks for.
Dec 2026 – Jan 2027

Expected late postings. Some technology roles, including Quantum Computing, closed as late as January 25 in the 2026 cycle. Interviews for early tracks are already underway by now, so a January posting is a real second chance, not a fallback.

Nov 2026 – Mar 2027

Expected interviews and offers. Glassdoor's intern data shows a phone screen or one-on-one interview, occasionally a panel with the team you'd join, and 23 days on average from application to hire. Questions are behavioral: tell us about yourself, your favorite project, relevant experience.

Mid-May – Aug 2027

The internship: 10 to 14 weeks, hybrid in Madison (or Boston for some roles), mentor-led project, networking and coaching, and a final presentation to management, during the summer AmFam marks its centennial.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Do AmFam's windows really close that fast? The 2026 cycle says yes. The Venture Capital posting closed November 4, Communications closed November 7 and Corporate Finance closed November 20, each within weeks of going live. AmFam's own pages don't state a rolling policy, but a Talent Community built around campus alerts tells you the company expects candidates to move the day a posting appears.

So the practical rule is simple: the alert email is your deadline. Apply within seven days of it, with a resume that already matches the job description, because there's no cover letter field to explain yourself later.

Which American Family Insurance Internship Programs Should You Target?

AmFam runs one corporate internship program with assignments across ten or more functional areas. These are the tracks documented in the summer 2026 cycle.

TrackFocusDurationKey skills
Quantum ComputingQuantum algorithms, proof-of-concept projects, quantum machine learning research10 to 14 weeksPython, Cirq/Qiskit, SKLearn, AWS or GCP

Consumer InsightsMarket research, consumer behavior projects, data analysis10 to 14 weeksResearch methods, data analysis

Only the Quantum Computing posting published a pay range ($25 to $39 an hour); the others didn't list pay. Track names change year to year, so treat this table as representative and check the Workday intern board once postings open.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

AmFam's requirements are consistent across tracks and notably don't include a GPA floor.

Enrollment: Student status at an accredited 4-year college or university during the internship, pursuing a bachelor's, master's or PhD

Major alignment: Your major or program must match the internship role

Credit hours: At least 24 semester hours of academic credit before the first work term (Corporate Finance, Communications and Venture Capital postings)

Graduation timing: Must be graduating August 2027 or later for summer 2027 roles, based on the 2026 posting language

GPA: No minimum GPA appears on the program page or in any of the ten-plus 2026 job descriptions reviewed

Work authorization: US citizen or US permanent resident; "sponsorship will not be considered unless specified in the posting"

Overhead shot of a tidy desk with a house key on a keyring, a toy car, a calculator, a paper actuarial table with blank

Is the No-GPA Policy Real?

Yes, as far as anything published goes. Unlike peers such as Erie Insurance, which sets a 3.0 floor, AmFam's program page and every 2026 job description we reviewed are silent on GPA. The screen is on major alignment, credit hours and, for technical roles, specific skills like Python or AP Style.

So what should a 2.9 student do? Apply, and spend the resume space on project evidence instead, because that's what the interviewers ask about.

What Skills Does American Family Insurance Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We read four full 2026 job descriptions, for Quantum Computing, Corporate Finance, Venture Capital and Communications, plus snippets from six more. What repeats across all four? Presenting project results to management, teamwork, and analytical problem-solving. Data analysis shows up in three, project management in two, and each role adds one specialist skill: Qiskit for quantum, financial statements for finance, term sheets for venture, AP Style for communications.

And the quiet requirement in every posting is adaptability, phrased as being open to new ideas and generating creative responses to changing situations.

What Is the American Family Insurance Application and Interview Process Like?

AmFam's intern process is short and almost entirely behavioral: Glassdoor's eight intern interview reports average 2.7 out of 5 difficulty, 100% positive experience and 23 days from application to hire.

1. Join the Talent Community at flows.beamery.com/afienterprise/campus-recruitment for alerts the day postings go live.

2. Apply on the Workday intern board linked from the internship program page. There's no cover letter upload, so your resume carries the whole application.

3. Phone screen or one-on-one interview (30 to 45 minutes). Reported by 30% of intern candidates each. Expect "tell us about yourself," "what was your favorite project?" and "what experience applies to this internship?"

4. Possible panel interview with two to four people from the team you'd join, reported by 10% of candidates. Still behavioral.

5. Background check and NDA. Required for every intern; the NDA covers proprietary information, trade secrets and inventions.

6. Offer. Average 23 days from application to hire per Glassdoor.

But technology candidates should prepare for one exception. A r/csMajors poster described a first-round technical interview for the ML intern role, so Python and ML fundamentals matter there even though most tracks skip technical screens. Interview reports are on Glassdoor's AmFam intern interview page.

What Students on Reddit Say

And on Reddit, AmFam comes up mostly in Madison threads, where the tone is consistent: a good local internship with fair pay and a calm workplace.

In a thread about software internships in Madison, a former AmFam intern called it a good experience with decent pay and recalled the intern rate at roughly $22 an hour at the time, recommending it to local students.

Asked what it's like to work at AmFam, a commenter described solid work-life balance, roughly 38-hour weeks and plenty of room for growth and development, with an overall positive take on the Madison offices.

A candidate for AmFam's ML intern role asked what to expect from a first-round technical interview, confirming that at least one technology track includes a technical screen unlike the behavioral-only process most tracks use.

How Do You Stand Out at American Family Insurance?

First, be early. AmFam's windows close within weeks, and the Talent Community sends alerts the day roles post. Being in the first batch of applications matters more here than at companies with three-month windows.

Second, understand the mutual model. AmFam is owned by its policyholders, not shareholders, which is why it invests in things like DreamBank, a free community innovation center in Madison, and the Institute for Corporate and Social Impact, a venture arm backing startups in housing and AI for social good. When the interviewer asks "why AmFam?", an answer that mentions the mutual structure beats one that mentions insurance.

Third, bring a project you owned. Every job description ends with presenting results to management, and the interview asks about your favorite project. Prepare one STAR story where you ran the project from scope to presentation and can say what the audience did with your findings.

And for technology candidates, why does the quantum computing track exist at an insurer? Because AmFam is positioning itself as a technology company that sells insurance. Reference that track, the AI for Social Good investments or the endpoint security work rather than generic industry knowledge.

Expected October to November 2026 for most tracks, with some technology roles posting as late as January 2027. In the 2026 cycle, deadlines ran from November 4 to January 25, about six to eight months before the mid-May start. AmFam hasn't announced exact dates, so rely on Talent Community alerts.

Does American Family Insurance require a minimum GPA for interns?

International students should read each requisition carefully, but the default position is no sponsorship for internships.

What is the American Family Insurance intern interview like?

Behavioral and low-pressure. Glassdoor's eight intern reports average 2.7 out of 5 difficulty with 100 percent positive experiences. Expect a phone screen or one-on-one interview with questions like "tell us about yourself" and "what was your favorite project?" The ML intern track adds a technical round, per a Reddit candidate.

Where are American Family Insurance internships located?

Madison, Wisconsin, for nearly all roles, on a hybrid schedule from the corporate headquarters at 6000 American Parkway. The Quantum Computing and Communications postings also listed Boston, Massachusetts as a location option. A one-time housing bonus may be available for interns who need to relocate.

AmFam's postings are weeks away and its windows close fast. What will your resume say when the alert lands?
