Nothing is open right now. The White House Internship Program runs three sessions a year, and each gets one fixed application window of about four weeks. The spring 2027 window closed on 10 August 2026, and whitehouse.gov lists 28 September 2026 as the date spring acceptance notifications were due to begin. The next door is summer 2027: the application posts on 7 December 2026 and closes on 4 January 2027, for an internship that runs 2 June to 6 August 2027. In plain words: you apply in December 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

Know two things before you plan around it. The program is in person in Washington, DC, and it's unpaid: the official FAQ says "White House internships are unpaid positions". Applicants must also be US citizens aged 18 or over who pass drug testing and security screening.

No session is accepting applications today. Summer 2027 is the next window, 7 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and late recommendation letters are penalized. The work right now is preparation: essays, resume and recommenders.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. Between now and 7 December you can finish one: the Corporate Strategy Externship mentored by Eric Ries trains the memo-style analysis policy offices want, and the TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship fits the Digital Strategy and Communications offices. What Is a White House Internship?

A White House internship is an unpaid, full-time, in-person placement in one of the offices of the Executive Office of the President, in sessions of about 9 to 16 weeks. The program's overview calls it "a public service leadership program", and lists the daily work as "conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, writing memos, and staffing events."

There's shared programming on top of the office work: weekly events including a speaker series and professional development, plus volunteer projects. Placement is by office, and the Presidential Departments page describes 27 of them, so the office you aim for shapes most of what you do.

When Do White House Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The program publishes exact dates for every session on its How to Apply page, and it runs on a short lead: each window posts about six months before the session starts. Summer 2026 posted 1 December 2025 and closed 5 January 2026. Summer 2027 follows the same shape: 7 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, a 28-day window.

The published dates do move. The fall 2026 window was revised after first publication, by three days at the opening and a week at the deadline, and decision dates have slipped by a week or more. So treat any date we project as expected, and the whitehouse.gov page as final.

Applications aren't open. Spring 2027 closed on 10 August, and its decisions were due to begin on 28 September 2026. Summer 2027 opens on 7 December, so this is the window to draft essays, update a one-page resume and ask two people to write recommendation letters.

Build one piece of recent, relevant work first: the Corporate Strategy Externship mentored by Eric Ries for memo-style analysis, or the Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships Externship for outreach and partnership work.

Summer 2027 application window (published dates). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so submit as soon as your package is complete. Every item, letters included, must be in by 4 January 2027.

From 15 Feb 2027

Acceptance notifications for summer 2027 begin (published). Applicants on Reddit report phone interviews for some offices and decisions arriving weeks after the start date. Fall 2027 applications are expected to open around March to mid-April 2027.

Summer 2027

The internship runs 2 June to 6 August 2027, full time and in person in Washington, DC. You arrange your own housing.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard deadline with a short window. Summer 2027 applications are open for 28 days, and the FAQ is blunt about late material: asked whether a late recommendation is penalized, it answers "Yes." Every item has to be in by the deadline.

Review is also rolling inside the window. The FAQ says applications "are reviewed on a rolling basis" and encourages you to submit once your package is complete. Waiting until early January is the real risk: the deadline falls four days after New Year's, with recommenders on holiday. Have the letters requested in October and the essays drafted by early December.

Which White House Internship Programs Should You Target?

There's one White House Internship Program, but interns are placed by office. These are some of the offices whose descriptions spell out intern work:

The Applicant Criteria page sets these gates:

• Citizenship and age: US citizen, 18 or older.

• Screening: must complete and pass drug testing and security screening.

• Format: must agree to full-time, in-person work; the FAQ sets at least Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, and 4.5 days a week.

• Status, at least one of: enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a two- or four-year institution with two semesters completed before the start date; graduated no more than two years before the start date; or a US Armed Forces veteran with a high school diploma who served on active duty in the two years before the start date.

Is the White House Internship Paid?

No. The current FAQ says internships are unpaid, housing isn't provided, and any outside income, funding or housing assistance must be pre-approved. The program did pay $750 a week from fall 2022 under the previous administration, as NPR reported, and some older university pages still describe it as paid.

What Skills Does the White House Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Across all 27 office descriptions, three kinds of work recur. Research comes first, from policy councils to Counsel and Speechwriting. Then the operational backbone: administration, events and logistics, from the Visitors Office to Advance and Travel.

The third is outreach and communication, with officials, organizations and the public. Specific tools appear only once: the Photo Office requires Adobe Creative Suite and macOS.

Method: we read all 27 office descriptions on the White House Presidential Departments page (2 Oct 2026) and counted each office once per type of intern work it names. Five descriptions name no specific intern duties, so the counts are a floor. These are office descriptions, not job requisitions.

These are corporate and nonprofit policy roles that are open now, while the White House window doesn't open until December. A policy, legal or government affairs internship elsewhere is both a backup and the kind of experience past White House interns describe having.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each of those kinds of work can be practiced on a real project before December:

Skill (from real JDs)JD evidenceExternship that builds it
Research and memo writing (DPC, NEC, Staff Secretary)"conducting research ... writing memos"; "reviewing, revising, and finalizing memoranda"Corporate Strategy Externship mentored by Eric Ries
Policy data and analysis (policy councils)"assisting with in-depth research"ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics
Outreach and partnerships (Public Liaison, Intergovernmental Affairs)"building new and maintaining current relationships with organizations"Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships & Earned Revenue
Digital content (Digital Strategy, Communications)"digital content creation, design, and engagement"TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy
Operations and logistics (Management, Advance, Travel)"logistical and administrative tasks"Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics

A finished project helps here: the selection criteria ask for leadership shown in your community and commitment, and a completed project gives your essays something concrete and recent to point to.

What Is the White House Application and Interview Process Like?

The official steps are short. The rest comes from applicants' own reports:

1. Apply through the online portal during the posted window. The FAQ says only portal applications are reviewed; hard copies aren't accepted.

2. Recommendation letters. They can come from anyone who can speak to your qualifications, character and commitment to public service, addressed to the White House Internship Program and uploaded as PDFs before the deadline.

3. Rolling review. Applications are reviewed as they come in during the window.

4. Phone interview (community-reported). Applicants on Reddit report a short phone interview for some offices, while others say they got a decision without one.

5. Screening. Selected interns must pass drug testing and security screening before they start.

Decisions can take longer than the published date suggests. Summer 2026 notifications were due to begin on 9 February 2026, and rejection emails posted on Reddit arrived on 19 March.

What Students on Reddit Say

r/DCInterns runs a thread for almost every session. We've kept to process facts; the threads also carry a lot of political argument.

Summer 2026 applicants waited weeks past the published 9 February notification date. Rejection emails arrived on 19 March, and some applicants saw their portal read "under review" while also showing the application as closed.

Former interns from earlier administrations say what mattered depended on the office. One summer 2023 intern was a rising senior with about two years of nonprofit internships; another got in as a rising junior after a Capitol Hill internship.

In the spring 2026 thread, one applicant got an email in mid-September to set up a phone interview, while others only realized after applying that the program is unpaid and asked how to cover DC housing.

How Do You Stand Out for a White House Internship?

The White House doesn't publish a class size or acceptance rate; its own criteria page simply calls the process "highly competitive".

Three moves follow from what it does publish:

1. Write to one office. Placement is by office, and the descriptions differ sharply. A resume shaped around the Staff Secretary's editing work reads very differently from one aimed at Digital Strategy.

2. Show the three selection criteria. Public service, community leadership and commitment to the administration's mission are the stated tests, so give each a concrete example in your essays.

3. Finish early in the window. Review is rolling and late letters are penalized. Submitting in the first week of December, letters included, removes the biggest avoidable risk.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 White House internship?

No. Summer 2026 ran from June to August 2026, and the spring 2027 window closed on 10 August 2026. Nothing is open today. The next window is summer 2027: the application posts on 7 December 2026 and closes on 4 January 2027, for an internship from 2 June to 6 August 2027.

When do White House summer 2027 internship applications open?

On 7 December 2026, according to whitehouse.gov, with a deadline of 4 January 2027. Acceptance notifications begin on 15 February 2027. If you miss it, the fall 2027 window is expected to open around March to mid-April 2027, based on the fall 2026 dates.

Is the White House internship paid?

No. The official FAQ says White House internships are unpaid, no housing is provided, and any outside income, funding or housing assistance must be pre-approved. The program paid $750 a week from fall 2022 under the previous administration, but that has ended.

Who is eligible for a White House internship?

US citizens aged 18 or older who agree to full-time, in-person work and pass drug testing and security screening. You must also be a current student with two semesters completed, a graduate within two years of the start date, or a veteran with recent active duty.

Is there a GPA requirement for the White House internship?

None is published. The Applicant Criteria page lists citizenship, age, screening and student or graduate status as requirements, and selects on commitment to public service, community leadership and commitment to the administration's mission. Strong essays and letters matter more than a number.

How long is a White House internship?

It depends on the session. Summer 2027 runs 2 June to 6 August 2027, about nine weeks. Spring 2027 runs 13 January to 7 May, about sixteen weeks, and fall 2026 runs 2 September to 18 December. All sessions are full time, at least Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Is there an interview for the White House internship?

Sometimes. Applicants on Reddit report a short phone interview for some offices, while others received a decision without one. Selected interns must then pass drug testing and security screening. The White House doesn't publish its interview steps, so treat these as community reports.

When will I hear back from the White House Internship Program?

Notifications begin on the published date, but decisions often arrive later. For summer 2026, notifications were due to start on 9 February 2026, and applicants reported rejection emails on 19 March. For summer 2027, the published start date is 15 February 2027.

The summer 2027 window opens on 7 December, which leaves about two months to prepare. Use them well: line up your letters, draft your essays, and finish a remote Externship project you can point to in the application.
