The Washington Capitals don't hire their own interns. Their parent, Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), posts every Capitals internship on one job board, next to Wizards, Mystics and Go-Go roles. The three Capitals postings we read from February 2026 were paid at $17.95 an hour. Today, 17 October 2026, no Capitals internship is open: MSE's five open internships are all for sister teams. Here's the cycle in plain words: roles for summer 2027 and the 2027–28 season (September to May) are expected from about February 2027, with a second wave from July to September, so you apply in early 2027 and start in summer or September 2027.

What Is a Washington Capitals Internship?

A Washington Capitals internship is a paid, part-time, seasonal role with the NHL team, hired through its parent company, Monumental Sports & Entertainment. MSE also owns the Wizards, the Mystics, the Capital City Go-Go and Capital One Arena, and it posts all their internships on one Greenhouse board. The Capitals roles cover Marketing, Digital Media, Media Relations, Youth Hockey Development and Sales Operations. Postings for the other teams aren't Capitals internships, even though the company paragraph on each one mentions the Capitals.

When Do Washington Capitals Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Capitals post in two waves, and some roles are summer while others are season-long. Captures of the Capitals' own TeamWork pages show summer 2024 Marketing and Youth Hockey roles open on 3 March 2024 and Media Relations on 6 May 2024, with the 2024–25 season roles open on 6 August 2024. In 2026, Marketing for September to May went up on 5 February, the summer Media Relations and Youth Hockey roles were open on 19 February, and Digital Media, Sales Operations and Marketing postings existed by August and September. That's about 7 months of lead for a September start in the February wave and 1 to 2 months in the second. Expect a February 2027 wave and a July to September 2027 wave, with medium-low confidence on the months.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

No Capitals posting we read states a deadline, and the roles don't stay up. The 2025–26 Digital Media and Youth Hockey roles were already closed to new applications by 15 November 2025, and no Capitals internship was on MSE's board on 17 October 2026. Treat it as rolling: set alerts on MSE's board and TeamWork Online for February and July, and apply in the first days a role appears.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The Capitals' postings are short on formal rules and specific about availability:

• Student status: Marketing and Game Presentation asked for a current undergraduate or graduate student; Media Relations asked for someone working toward a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, business, sports management or a related field.

• Hockey: Youth Hockey Development required previous ice hockey playing experience and skating proficiency. Game Presentation called hockey knowledge a plus.

• Availability: 20 hours a week from September through May on Marketing, evenings and weekends on most roles, and Monday through Thursday on summer Media Relations.

• Local: reliable transportation and housing in the Washington area on most postings.

• GPA, academic credit and work authorization: not stated on the postings we read.

Do You Need to Play Hockey?

Only for Youth Hockey Development, which asks for playing experience and skating proficiency because interns coach on the ice at clinics. The other roles ask for passion for sports and live entertainment, or hockey knowledge as a plus, not playing ability. If you're a graduate, note that the postings we read name current students, not recent graduates.

What Is the Washington Capitals Application and Interview Process Like?

MSE doesn't publish an interview format for Capitals interns. This is what the postings show:

1. Search MSE's board. Look at job-boards.greenhouse.io/monumentalsports, not just "Washington Capitals"; TeamWork Online mirrors the roles.

2. Confirm the team. Read the position overview: Capitals roles say "NHL" or name the Capitals, while Wizards, Mystics and Go-Go roles sit on the same board.

3. Apply to the department. Each role is its own posting, titled "Internship: {Department} (Part-Time/Seasonal)".

4. Interview. The process isn't published, and we found no first-hand accounts of it.

5. Plan your schedule. Expect 20 hours a week from September through May on season roles, plus evenings and weekends.

MSE also doesn't publish an intern class size.

What We Found on Reddit

We searched Reddit on 17 October 2026 and found no first-hand thread from a Capitals intern. The only Capitals internship threads were automated r/sports_jobs reposts of the postings with no comments, which aren't community accounts, so we're not quoting them.

How Do You Stand Out for a Capitals Internship?

Three moves. First, apply to the right employer: search MSE's board and read each overview for "NHL" or the Capitals, because Wizards and Mystics roles sit beside them. Second, match the department. Digital Media wanted Adobe tools, social media accounts you've run and basic HTML; Media Relations wanted InDesign and strong editing; Youth Hockey required hockey playing and skating. Third, be ready for February and July, because the roles come down once filled. MSE publishes no applicant count or conversion rate, so treat the internship as experience first and ask about full-time paths once you're in.

No Capitals internships are open today, and the next roles are expected around February 2027. Set alerts on Monumental's board, and if you want a finished project to show, a remote Externship takes about 5 to 10 hours a week.
