The NHL league office runs one of the shortest application windows in sports. Its summer 2025 posting went up on 4 February 2025 and closed on 14 February, ten days later. For summer 2026 the league split the program into 20 department internships, from Stats R&D and Cybersecurity to Social Media and Player Relations, paid $20 an hour with one deadline of 1 March 2026. Here's the cycle in plain words: you apply in a short window around February 2027, and you intern in summer 2027. On 3 October 2026 the league office's own board on TeamWork Online listed 14 openings and none of them were internships. That makes this fall the time to pick your department and draft the cover letter, not the week the posting appears.

Nothing is open at the league office today. Applications for summer 2027 are expected around February 2027 and, going by the last two cycles, will stay open for about two weeks under one hard deadline.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most running 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week. The TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship builds the content skills behind four of the league's 2026 departments, and the Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy Externship gives you the research and data work the business development and analytics desks ask for.

What Is an NHL Internship?

An NHL internship is a paid summer placement at the National Hockey League's league office in New York, the body that runs the league for its 32 clubs. It isn't a team internship. Each club, from the Penguins to the Kraken, hires its own interns on its own calendar, and both sets of postings share TeamWork Online, which is the most common mix-up. The league describes itself as having about 1,500 employees across New York, Toronto and Montréal, and its intern program's stated goal is to give undergraduates business experience in sports and entertainment. In 2026 interns were hired into specific teams: NHL Productions, NHL Images, Player Relations, Club Business Affairs, Social Analytics, Project Management Office and more. Pay has climbed from $15 an hour in 2023 to $20 in 2026.

When Do NHL Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The league office opens once a year, late in the cycle and briefly. Summer 2025 posted on 4 February 2025 and closed on 14 February. Summer 2026 reqs were live by mid-February 2026 and closed on 1 March 2026. Earlier cycles ran later: the 2022 deadline was 1 April and the 2023 deadline 28 April, so the calendar has moved by weeks between years. We project applications for summer 2027 around February 2027, about four months before a June start, and we'd treat that as a range, not a date.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applications aren't open. On 3 October 2026 the league office board listed 14 jobs and none were internships; the summer 2026 internship postings now read "closed to new applications". Clubs hire separately, so a club posting isn't the NHL program. This window is when you build proof for the department you'll pick.

Use the gap for a finished project: the TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship fits Social Media and Fan Engagement, and the Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy Externship fits Business Development and Social Analytics.

Summer 2027

Program expected to start in June in New York, running roughly six to eight weeks if it follows the 2023 and 2025 format. The league doesn't publish a return-offer rate.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a short-window program with a hard deadline, and it's short enough that "apply early" isn't the advice. Applying at all is. The 2025 window lasted ten days, from 4 to 14 February, and the 2023 window fourteen days. Every posting carries one deadline that applies to all departments, and late applications have nowhere to go. The dates also drift: the deadline has landed on 1 April, 28 April, 14 February and 1 March in the four cycles we found. So a reader who checks the board once in March could miss the whole thing. Set the alert in January, have a finished cover letter for one department, and submit inside the first few days.

Which NHL Internship Programs Should You Target?

In 2026 the league posted one requisition per department instead of the single "Summer Intern" posting it used through 2025. These are six of the 20.

The full department list sits on the league's Join the Team page. Durations come from the 2023 and 2025 postings; the 2026 bodies we read didn't state one.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The postings set a few firm rules and leave several things unstated.

• Education: undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college pursuing a Bachelor's degree (2025 and 2026 postings). The 2023 posting limited legal internships to JD candidates.

• Class year: Player Relations asked for students entering junior or senior year; the other 2026 bodies we read didn't set one.

• Work authorization: the application asks whether you have the legal right to work in the US and whether you'll need sponsorship. No sponsorship policy is stated.

• Location: in person in New York at least three days a week (2025 posting). The league doesn't provide housing and doesn't offer school credit.

• GPA: no minimum appears in any posting from 2022, 2023, 2025 or 2026.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

There isn't one to cut against. None of the league postings we read named a GPA floor. Screening leans on the questions the form asks: your school, major, graduation year, availability, why you want the NHL, and whether you accept an in-person summer without housing in New York. The fit between your background and the one department you choose carries the most weight, since the 2026 postings asked applicants to apply to the opportunity most aligned with their studies or experience.

What Skills Does the NHL Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Across six league-office intern postings (the 2025 master posting and five 2026 department bodies), communication and organization show up nearly everywhere. Research and reporting, Excel and Microsoft Office, and some data collection make up the analytical bucket. The creative bucket is narrower: Adobe Creative Suite and broadcast know-how for NHL Productions. Real hockey knowledge counts too; NHL Productions lists it as required.

The 2026 bodies were read on SportsJobs Online mirrors because the employer pages now show only a closed notice. Stats, Social Analytics and Cybersecurity bodies weren't recoverable, so technical skills are under-counted.

A finished project gives your cover letter something concrete to point at, which matters when one application is matched to one department.

What Is the NHL Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the league's own postings; the interview format itself isn't published.

1. Watch the league office board. Filter TeamWork Online to the NHL league office (organization 28289) and turn on job alerts in January.

2. Apply to one department. In 2026 the league asked applicants to apply to the opportunity most aligned with their academic background or experience. In single-posting years (2022 to 2025) the cover letter named up to three business areas.

3. Answer the screening questions. Work authorization, sponsorship, school, major, graduation year, why the NHL, the in-person and no-housing acknowledgements, and your available days and hours.

4. Wait for an invite. Only candidates selected for an interview are contacted, and the postings ask you not to call or email about status.

5. Interview and offer. The format and timing aren't published; plan for March to May based on the February deadline.

If the 2027 cycle reverts to one posting, list departments using the names on the league's Join the Team page.

What Students on Reddit Say

Hockey threads mix league and club experiences, so read each card's context.

Someone who worked on the business side of an NHL front office says they got in through an internship, and warns that pay is low and hours long because so many people want the job. A later reply points out that the league itself runs a yearly summer internship out of its New York office.

A commenter who interned at the league offices for a summer remembers it as fun but barely paid. That was 2018; the league posted $18 an hour for 2025 and $20 for 2026, so the pay complaint has aged.

r/hockey intern recollection, paraphrased · read the thread

Commenters agree TeamWork Online is where hockey jobs post. One lost a club media internship because the team wanted someone local, and several suggest starting with junior or minor-league clubs to build experience.

How Do You Stand Out in a Two-Week NHL Window?

Three moves, all doable before February. First, pick one department and make your resume tell that story. The 2026 shape matched each application to one team, so a Social Analytics applicant with a finished data project reads stronger than a general sports fan. Second, show real hockey knowledge. NHL Productions lists it as required, and the screening form asks why you want the NHL specifically; name a league program like the All-Star Fan Vote or the Stanley Cup Final operations you'd support. Third, solve the logistics before you apply. The league pays $20 an hour, offers no housing and expects you in Manhattan at least three days a week, so have a plan you can state if asked. The league doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate, so treat every slot as scarce.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 NHL internship?

No. The league office's 20 summer 2026 department postings closed on 1 March 2026, and their pages now read closed to new applications. Nothing is open for summer 2027 either. Applications for summer 2027 are expected around February 2027, likely for about two weeks, so set a TeamWork Online alert in January.

When do NHL internship applications open for summer 2027?

We expect them around February 2027. The summer 2025 posting opened 4 February 2025 and closed 14 February, and the summer 2026 postings closed 1 March 2026. Earlier cycles ran into April, so dates move between years. Treat February as the likely month and check the board from early January.

Is the NHL internship deadline rolling?

No. Every cycle we found had one published deadline covering every department, and windows lasted roughly ten to fourteen days. There's no late review once it closes. Submit inside the first few days rather than waiting for the deadline itself, because the opening date isn't announced in advance.

How much do NHL interns make?

The league paid $20 an hour in summer 2026, up from $18 in 2025 and $15 in 2023, according to its own postings. It doesn't provide housing or offer school credit. The 2027 rate isn't published yet, so expect a figure near the 2026 one until the new postings appear.

Is there a GPA requirement for NHL internships?

No GPA minimum appears in any league posting we read from 2022 through 2026. You need to be an undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor's degree, and some departments, like Player Relations in 2026, prefer juniors and seniors. Your fit with one department and a clear answer to why the NHL matter more.

Where is the NHL internship located?

New York City. The 2025 posting required interns to report to the New York office at least three times a week, and the 2026 department postings we read point to New York too. We found no league intern posting in Toronto or Montréal, even though the league has offices there.

What skills does the NHL look for in interns?

Communication and organization appear in nearly every posting. Excel, research and reporting show up in business development and fan engagement roles. NHL Productions wants Adobe Creative Suite and real hockey knowledge. A finished project in your chosen department's area, like a social content plan or data analysis, gives your application weight.

Is an NHL internship the same as a team internship?

No. The league office in New York runs its own summer program, while each of the 32 clubs hires interns separately, often with spring and fall cohorts. Both post on TeamWork Online, so check the organization name on every listing. A club role is great hockey experience but isn't the league program.

The NHL window opens around February and shuts fast. Spend the months before it on a remote Externship so your one department application points at finished work.
