Last updated: October 2026
Volvo Group's US sites have 20 student roles open right now, and they're for spring 2027, not summer. Its own job site listed 20 US student requisitions on 25 October 2026: 13 interns, 1 co-op and 6 vocational trainees at Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment sites in Greensboro NC, Macungie PA, Shippensburg PA, Dublin VA and Hagerstown MD. Nineteen are labeled Spring 2027 and none is labeled Summer 2027 yet. In plain words, you apply this fall to work in spring 2027, and summer 2027 roles haven't posted. Every intern and co-op req shares one pay range, $17.00 to $46.00 an hour. This guide covers Volvo Group only; Volvo Cars is a separate company with no US student role on its board.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week, which is long enough to add proof before spring roles fill. The Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship matches Volvo's lean and continuous improvement interns, and the Breaking Games SQL & Database Architecture Externship fits its business intelligence role. What Is a Volvo Internship?
A Volvo internship in the US is a paid student role at Volvo Group's American sites, not at Volvo Cars. Volvo Group makes Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment, and its reqs name those brands, from a Mack technical support intern in Greensboro to a Volvo Construction Equipment paint trainee in Shippensburg. There's no branded program page for the US. Each team posts its own req on the Volvo Group job site, and each is titled by term, such as "Intern: Continuous Improvement (Spring 2027)". Volvo Cars is a separate company with no US student role on its job board.

When Do Volvo Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Volvo Group US posts each term as its own wave and puts the term in the title. The live wave is Spring 2027, and the board has no Summer 2027 req. Req pages don't show a posting date, and the job site's sitemap date is a refresh date, not a posting date, so we can't state a lead time or project a summer window. What we can say is that the board moved between 17 and 25 October 2026: three Spring 2027 reqs came down (Shippensburg social media, Dublin transport packaging and Dublin communications) and at least five went up, in Dublin and Hagerstown.
Applications are open right now for 20 student roles, all for spring 2027 except one with no term listed. No summer 2027 roles are posted. Volvo gives no closing dates, so apply when you see a role that fits.
Interviews and offers for spring roles. Volvo doesn't publish its hiring steps, so ask the recruiter what happens after you apply.
Spring 2027 term starts. The reqs give the term and not an exact start date, and interns may work up to 30 hours a week alongside classes.
Watch the job site for "Summer 2027" titles. We couldn't recover last year's summer posting dates from Volvo's own pages, so there's no projected date, and checking the board every couple of weeks is the safest plan.
If summer roles post, they'll carry the term in the title. Volvo Group doesn't publish an intern conversion rate.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Volvo's reqs state no closing date and don't say they're rolling, so the only evidence is how the board moves. Between 17 and 25 October 2026, three US student reqs came down and at least five went up, and a spring semester needs seats filled before January. That's enough to say reqs don't sit forever. If a role matches your degree and your GPA clears the 2.75 line, apply within days. Don't wait for summer postings that haven't appeared and may not follow this pattern.
Which Volvo Internship Programs Should You Target?
These are the groups of Volvo Group US student roles live on 25 October 2026.
| Track | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing and engineering interns (Dublin VA, Macungie PA, Hagerstown MD) | Manufacturing engineer (three roles), maintenance engineering, continuous improvement, health and safety | Spring 2027, up to 30 hrs/week | Lean, quality, CAD, Excel; GPA 2.75 |
| Business and data interns (Dublin VA, Hagerstown MD, Shippensburg PA) | Business intelligence developer, business administration, business control, site purchasing, project manager | Spring 2027, up to 30 hrs/week | Power BI, SQL, Excel, project coordination; GPA 2.75 |
| Technical support and content interns (Greensboro NC) | Technical support services for Mack and Volvo brands; video editor and training content developer | Spring 2027, up to 30 hrs/week | Troubleshooting, communication, video; GPA 2.75 |
| Manufacturing engineer co-op (Hagerstown MD) | Machining engineering team, CNC equipment and process development | Spring 2027, up to 40 hrs/week | CAD, data analysis, root-cause analysis; GPA 2.75 |
| Vocational trainees (Shippensburg PA) | Paint, welding, machining, warehouse, assembly, remanufacturing | Spring 2027 | Hands-on trade skills, safety; GPA 2.5, age 17+ |
Search the job site for "intern", "co-op" and "vocational trainee" with the country set to United States, then read each req's term line.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Volvo Group sets eligibility per req, and many reqs share the same wording.
• Enrollment: currently enrolled in a degree program in a related field, and 12 reqs also ask you to have completed 30 semester hours before the internship starts. The Greensboro technical support intern asks for an associate's in diesel, automotive or engineering technology or equivalent.
• GPA: a minimum cumulative 2.75 on all 14 intern and co-op reqs, and 2.5 on the six vocational trainee reqs, which also require you to be at least 17.
• Degree fields: role-specific, such as mechanical or industrial engineering for manufacturing roles, a business-related degree (finance preferred) for Business Control, and data or computer science fields for the BI developer.
• Work authorization: two reqs (Continuous Improvement and Business Control) ask for valid US work authorization. The others don't say.
• Work model: mostly on site at plants. The Project Manager intern in Shippensburg works remotely and in an office.

Is the 2.75 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
The reqs call it a minimum cumulative GPA, so treat it as a screen. Volvo Group doesn't say whether it makes exceptions. If you're below it, the six vocational trainee roles ask for 2.5 and a trade-related field of study, but they are hands-on plant roles in paint, welding, machining, warehouse, assembly and remanufacturing, not office internships.
What Skills Does Volvo Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Three groups run through Volvo Group's 20 US student reqs. Working skills come first: all 20 name teamwork, and 13 name communication. Process skills follow, with lean or continuous improvement in 15 reqs and quality standards in 12. Technical and data skills depend on the track, with hands-on equipment or machining skills in 12 reqs, data analysis or reporting in 8 and Excel or Microsoft Office in 6.

How Is Demand for Mechanical Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
For Volvo applicants: Volvo Group's own job site had 20 US student reqs on 25 October 2026, all for spring 2027 and none for summer, so the fall wave in the wider market hasn't reached Volvo's summer roles yet.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (87 postings in September, 36 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row maps a skill from Volvo Group's live reqs to a remote Externship that produces a finished project.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Lean and continuous improvement | Continuous Improvement intern (Macungie): "Drive lean methodology" and "Support 5S activities" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Business intelligence and SQL | Business Intelligence Developer intern (Dublin): "Assist with the development of reports, dashboards, automations, and analytical solutions"; Power BI, SQL, Python | Breaking Games SQL & Database Architecture |
| Finance and business control | Business Control intern (Hagerstown): "Assisting in business case development"; Microsoft Power BI visualization | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
None of these Externships is affiliated with Volvo Group, and none covers manufacturing, maintenance or trade skills, so they build the business and data side of these roles. Most run about 8 weeks, so one started in November can finish before the term begins.
What Is the Volvo Application and Interview Process Like?
Volvo Group doesn't publish a US intern hiring process, so this comes from the reqs.
1. Search the job site for United States. Student reqs are titled "Intern:", "Co-op:" or "Vocational Trainee:", with the term in brackets.
2. Check the screens first. Read the GPA line (2.75 or 2.5), the semester-hours requirement and the term before you apply.
3. Apply per req. Each role has its own application on the same site.
4. Finish with a presentation. The Greensboro technical support req ends with a "final presentation of assigned project" to the Uptime Operations teams, so expect project-based work.
Volvo Group doesn't publish interview rounds or timelines for US student roles.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has little on Volvo Group's US internships, and the two threads below are the only first-hand ones we found.
A rising senior weighed a Volvo operations internship in the Mack Trucks assembly plant against a Genentech manufacturing co-op. A commenter who worked at Volvo Construction Equipment about a decade ago said its assembly areas follow Toyota Production System thinking, and another said Volvo carries more name recognition but manufacturing experience is worth having.
A commenter in 2019 said Volvo Trucks in Greensboro hires a lot of college interns and often keeps them through graduation. They stressed that it's a semi-truck employer, not Volvo cars.
How Do You Stand Out for a Volvo Group Internship?
First, clear the screens: a 2.75 GPA and the 30 semester hours that 12 reqs ask for. Second, match the plant. Reqs are written around real lines and tools, such as 5S, kaizen weeks, CNC machining and Power BI dashboards, so use those words and show a project that touches them. Third, say which Volvo Group brand you're applying to (Mack, Volvo Trucks or Volvo Construction Equipment) and why. Volvo Group doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Volvo internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and Volvo Group's job site shows no summer 2026 US student roles. What is open on 25 October 2026 is 20 student roles, 19 of them titled Spring 2027. No Summer 2027 roles are posted yet, so watch the board for them.
When do Volvo summer 2027 internship applications open?
Volvo Group hasn't posted any. No US req on its job site carried Summer 2027 in the title on 25 October 2026, and its pages don't show past posting dates. Check the site every couple of weeks and apply to spring roles in the meantime if one fits.
How much does Volvo pay interns?
Volvo Group's reqs give one range for every intern and co-op position: $17.00 to $46.00 an hour. The reqs say the rate depends on location, academic classification and field of study, so a specific role's rate isn't stated. They also list housing assistance when applicable.
What GPA do you need for a Volvo internship?
The 14 intern and co-op reqs ask for a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, and the six vocational trainee reqs ask for 2.5 and an age of at least 17. Twelve reqs also ask for 30 completed semester hours. Volvo Group doesn't say whether it makes exceptions.
Where are Volvo Group's US internships?
The 20 live roles are in Greensboro, North Carolina, Macungie and Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, Dublin, Virginia, and Hagerstown, Maryland. Most are on site at plants or offices, and the Shippensburg Project Manager intern works remotely and in an office. Volvo Group also has non-US programs outside this guide.
Is Volvo Cars the same as Volvo Group?
No. Volvo Group makes Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment, and Volvo Cars is a separate company. On 25 October 2026 Volvo Cars' US job board showed no intern, co-op or student roles, and its student page, as we read it on 17 October, described an internship programme in Gothenburg, Sweden. This guide covers Volvo Group only.
How many hours do Volvo interns work?
Spring interns may work up to 30 hours a week alongside classes, per the reqs. The Hagerstown manufacturing engineer co-op may work up to 40 hours a week, because co-ops aren't enrolled in classes during the rotation. Vocational trainee reqs don't state weekly hours.
Does Volvo hire interns full-time?
Volvo Group doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its students page says it's not uncommon for interns to stay on once an internship ends, but that statement is global, not US-specific. A 2019 Reddit comment said Volvo Trucks in Greensboro often keeps interns, which is a single account.
Volvo Group's spring 2027 roles are open now and the board changes week to week. Apply this month, and if you want a finished project to discuss, a remote Externship can wrap up before the term starts.
