UW Health, the University of Wisconsin's academic health system in Madison, runs its biggest student program for nurses: a 10-week paid Nurse Externship from 1 June to 6 August 2027 at University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital and East Madison Hospital. Applications are taken only from 23 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, a window about three weeks shorter than last year's. In plain words: you apply this winter, you extern in summer 2027.

Nothing summer-2027 for students is open today (3 October 2026). Non-nursing undergraduates have a narrower door, the HOPE college summer internship, which is open only to students who mentor at HOPE sessions during this school year. This guide covers UW Health in Wisconsin, not UW Medicine in Seattle or the University of Wisconsin–Madison as an employer.

What Is a UW Health Internship?

A UW Health internship, for most students, means the Nurse Externship: a 10-week paid summer program where nursing students work "alongside RN clinical coaches for the full duration of the program" and provide nursing care in high-acuity settings. In 2026 externs worked a 36-hour week on day, evening, night and weekend shifts that matched their coach's schedule. For non-nursing undergraduates, the HOPE college internship places students in departments across UW Health for 12 weeks and ends with a presentation to UW Health leaders.

When Do UW Health Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

UW Health publishes its Nurse Externship dates. For summer 2026 the program took applications from 1 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, held virtual interviews from November to February, made offers from mid-February through March, and ran 26 May to 31 July (employer posting, syndicated to a job board). For summer 2027 the window opens three weeks later, on 23 November 2026, and closes two days earlier, on 4 January 2027, so it's 42 days instead of 66. That puts applications about six months before the 1 June 2027 start. The HOPE college internship runs on a different clock: the real first step is mentoring at HOPE sessions on Saturdays in November, December, February and March.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard-deadline program. UW Health accepts Nurse Externship applications only between 23 November 2026 and 4 January 2027, and the window just got about three weeks shorter, from 66 days to 42. It also spans Thanksgiving, finals and winter break, which is exactly when nursing students lose track of email. The application has four parts (resume, three-prompt essay, supplemental application and the online form), and UW Health asks you to complete the supplemental application before starting the online one. Last cycle, interviews began in November while the window was still open, so applying in the first week of the window rather than the last is the safer plan.

Which UW Health Internship Programs Should You Target?

The Nurse Externship is the flagship. The other tracks are smaller or gated, and UW Health doesn't list a corporate or administrative summer internship.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The Nurse Externship has three requirements, all on UW Health's program page:

• Program: currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program. Current UW Health employees in associate degree programs can also apply.

• Clinicals: two in-person clinical courses completed before the 1 June 2027 start.

• Graduation: expected 6–12 months after the program ends, which means roughly February to August 2028 for summer 2027.

• Certification: the 2026 posting asked for your BLS/CPR expiration date on the resume.

• HOPE college internship: current undergraduates with at least one year of college who mentored at two or more HOPE sessions during the prior school year.

• GPA and visas: not stated on any UW Health page or posting we read.

Can Non-Nursing Students Get a UW Health Internship?

Yes, but only through HOPE, and you have to start now. HOPE mentors are college students of any major who help supervise high school students at day-long Saturday sessions in November, December, February and March. Mentors who attend at least two sessions are alerted to the college internship posting and can apply. Mentoring takes a form and a background check, and you can intern for up to four summers, though a spot isn't guaranteed. If you skip mentoring this year, the college internship isn't open to you next summer.

UW Health spells out the Nurse Externship application, and the 2026 posting adds the interview timeline:

1. Complete the Nurse Extern Supplemental Application (a PDF on the application page) before you start the online application.

2. Write the essay. Three prompts: a recent clinical experience that affirmed your choice of nursing, a personal accomplishment that fits UW Health's vision for remarkable care, and one professional and one personal goal for the program.

3. Update your resume with every clinical course you'll have completed by May 2027, plus your expected graduation date.

Three moves, all doable before 23 November.

Make the essay specific. UW Health asks for a recent clinical experience, an accomplishment and two goals. Pick one patient moment you can describe in detail and one goal tied to a unit you'd want, since clinical interests come up at the interview.

Show your clinical hours. List every clinical course with its hours and completion date, as the 2026 posting asked, plus your BLS expiration date. A year-round Student Nurse Assistant job at $19 an hour adds real acute-care hours and puts you on the units early.

Apply early in a short window. The window is 42 days and spans the holidays, and interviews started in November last cycle. UW Health doesn't publish cohort size or a conversion rate, but the program introduces externs to the Nurse Residency, so say you're interested in that path.
