Sanford Health, the Sioux Falls system that calls itself the largest rural health system in the United States, runs three very different internship tracks, and they open at different times. The one with a deadline right now is the Sanford Student Nurse Internship Program: a 10-week, full-time, paid summer nurse internship at about 50 locations, taking applications until 12 October 2026. Science undergraduates can apply to Sanford Research's SPUR program from November, with a 31 January 2027 deadline. Business, finance and IT students have 12-week paid non-clinical internships, but none are posted for summer 2027 yet.

In plain words: you apply during fall 2026 for the summer 2027 nurse internship, by January 2027 for summer research, and from early 2027 for the corporate roles.

The Student Nurse Internship for summer 2027 is open now and closes 12 October 2026; it's one Workday requisition covering about 50 locations. SPUR research applications open in November and close 31 January 2027. Corporate summer 2027 internships aren't posted yet, so watch Sanford's Workday board from January.

Whichever Sanford track you're aiming for, a finished project helps. Extern's Externships are short, remote, project-based programs (not clinical rotations) where you complete real work for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. For the corporate side, the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship matches Sanford's administrative internships, and the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship builds the data skills its IT and quality teams use.

What Is a Sanford Health Internship?

A Sanford Health internship is a paid placement with Sanford Health, a nonprofit system headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, that reports 60,000 employees, 60 hospitals and 315 clinic locations. There isn't one Sanford internship. Nursing students apply to the Student Nurse Internship Program, a 10-week summer program where you work your preceptor's schedule on a real unit. Business, IT and communications students apply to 12-week paid non-clinical internships in areas like administration, finance, marketing, human resources, IT, supply chain, and quality and risk. Science students apply to Sanford Research's SPUR program, which pays a $6,000 stipend for 10 weeks of lab research. Pharmacy and radiology students can also find intern jobs that run during the school year.

When Do Sanford Health Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Sanford's tracks run on separate calendars. The nurse internship opens in late August and closes in mid-October, about seven and a half months before a late-May or early-June start. SPUR opens in November and closes on 31 January, four months before its 1 June start; its 2026 deadline was 9 January, so it moved about three weeks later this year. The non-clinical internships run in fall, spring and summer sessions, and Sanford posts them one requisition at a time. We couldn't recover a dated prior-cycle posting for them, so the expected January to March 2027 window for summer 2027 is a low-confidence estimate.

The Student Nurse Internship for summer 2027 is open right now and closes 12 October. Also open: the Student Nurse Advancement Program in Bismarck, pharmacy intern jobs in Fargo and radiology intern jobs in Aberdeen, all rolling, plus PROMISE for high school students, which opened on 1 October. Corporate summer 2027 internships aren't posted yet, and the winter/spring Sports Intern and the Eau Claire surgical tech intern jobs have closed.

12 October 2026HARD DEADLINE

Student Nurse Internship applications for summer 2027 close. It's one requisition covering about 50 locations, so one date governs every site. Submit a cumulative transcript that includes your latest semester.

November 2026 to 31 January 2027HARD DEADLINE

SPUR applications for summer 2027 open in November and close on Sunday 31 January 2027; late applications aren't considered. High school students applying to PROMISE have until 8 January 2027.

January to March 2027EXPECTED

Non-clinical internships for summer 2027 are expected to post on Sanford's Workday board, one req at a time. Check the Student Services job family weekly from January. This is our estimate, not a published date.

Summer 2027

Nurse interns start in late May or early June for 10 weeks, with their preceptor's schedule shared in May. SPUR and PROMISE run 1 June to 6 August 2027. Corporate interns work a 12-week session capped at 400 hours.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

For nursing students this is a hard deadline, and it's close. Sanford's program page says applications are accepted from 28 August to 12 October, and there's no second summer window behind it. The deadline has also moved between years: an older Sanford calendar shows an October close, while another social post, year unclear, described a window running to 31 January, so last year's timing isn't a safe guide. The program page is.

SPUR works the same way, with a fixed 31 January 2027 deadline and no late applications. The corporate internships are the opposite case: there's no published date, so the risk there is applying late, after a req has filled, rather than missing a deadline.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Each track has its own gates. These come from Sanford's program pages and live postings:

• Student Nurse Internship: enrolled in an accredited RN program (associate or bachelor's) with at least one academic clinical experience, expected graduation Fall/Winter 2027 or Spring/Summer 2028, and a cumulative transcript with your latest semester. Minnesota and North Dakota placements also require a board-approved internship course.

• Certification: the nurse internship requires American Heart Association BLS; Sanford's FAQ says Red Cross certification isn't accepted.

• ADN students: eligible for the nurse internship, but not at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

• Non-clinical internships: current undergraduate juniors, seniors and recent graduates "with a record of outstanding achievement and leadership abilities."

• SPUR: life-science or STEM freshmen, sophomores or juniors; slots funded by NSF or NIH require US citizenship or permanent residency.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

Sanford doesn't publish one. None of its program pages or the live student postings we read list a minimum GPA, which is unusual for a large employer. The nurse internship asks for your cumulative transcript instead, so grades are read in context alongside your clinical experience. For corporate internships, the stated bar is "outstanding achievement and leadership," which in practice means a resume with something concrete on it.

What Skills Does Sanford Health Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Sanford's student postings are clinical first, so the skills that repeat are about patient care and working inside a regulated setting. Across the seven college-student requisitions live on 3 October 2026 (the nurse internship, the Advancement Program, three pharmacy and two radiology intern jobs), every one asks for communication with patients or colleagues, and most stress following protocols, problem solving and working under a licensed mentor or preceptor.

The non-clinical internships don't have live postings yet. Sanford's own descriptions point to project and administrative work with leadership (administration), financial planning, budgeting and audit (finance), application project management and systems support (IT), and compliance and risk analysis (quality and risk).

What Is the Sanford Health Application and Interview Process Like?

Sanford publishes the most detail for the nurse internship, so that's the process below; corporate internships follow a standard Workday application.

1. Apply on Workday by 12 October 2026. The Student Nurse Internship is a single requisition listing about 50 locations. Attach a cumulative transcript including your most recent semester.

2. Interview. Sanford interviews applicants before deciding placement, and your interests, goals and completed clinical rotations shape where you land.

3. Offer with placement and pay. The offer names your unit, location and rate of pay, which Sanford reviews annually and shares during the interview and at offer.

4. Schedule in May. Your preceptor's schedule arrives in May, and you work it: 8-, 10- or 12-hour shifts, possibly nights, weekends and holidays, with very limited time off.

5. Pre-employment screening. Expect a drug screen as part of onboarding. Community reports on Reddit describe what it covers, but that isn't official policy.

For SPUR, applications go through the NSF ETAP system rather than Workday, with two letters of recommendation (at least one from a professor) and a transcript due by 31 January 2027.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit talk about Sanford internships is thin, but a few first-hand threads answer practical questions.

Several recent Sanford hires in Fargo, including non-licensed staff, report a 4-panel drug screen covering opioids, amphetamines, cocaine and meth, and say THC wasn't tested for their roles. Treat it as community experience, not Sanford policy.

How Do You Stand Out for a Sanford Health Internship?

Three moves, depending on your track.

First, for the nurse internship, get the paperwork exactly right. AHA BLS rather than Red Cross, a cumulative transcript with your latest semester, and the board-approved internship course if you're placed in Minnesota or North Dakota. Applications missing one of these are easy to set aside. If you're an ADN student, skip Sanford USD Medical Center in your location preferences.

Second, be specific about where you want to work. Placement is decided after the interview, and Sanford says your interests and completed rotations shape it. Naming a unit type and a location, and why, gives the recruiter something to work with across 50 sites.

Third, for corporate roles, arrive with a project. Sanford asks non-clinical interns for "outstanding achievement and leadership." A finished analysis or operations project gives you a concrete example in the interview.

Sanford doesn't publish an intern-to-hire rate. Its nurse internship can extend into the school year for a limited number of interns, and the Advancement Program is built as a ladder from technician to RN.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Sanford Health internship?

No. Sanford's summer 2026 programs have finished. What's open now is the Student Nurse Internship for summer 2027, which closes 12 October 2026. SPUR research applications for summer 2027 open in November, and corporate summer 2027 internships are expected to post on Workday from around January 2027.

When is the Sanford Student Nurse Internship deadline?

The deadline is 12 October 2026 for summer 2027. Sanford accepts applications from 28 August to 12 October on a single Workday requisition covering about 50 locations. The internship runs 10 weeks, full time and paid, starting in late May or early June 2027.

Does Sanford Health pay its interns?

Yes. The nurse internship and the 12-week non-clinical internships are paid, though Sanford shares the nurse intern rate at interview rather than publishing it. The Student Nurse Advancement Program starts at $21.50 an hour, and SPUR pays a $6,000 stipend with free housing.

Does Sanford Health have business or IT internships?

Yes. Sanford offers 12-week paid non-clinical internships in administration, finance, marketing, human resources, IT, supply chain, and quality and risk, in fall, spring and summer sessions. None were posted for summer 2027 as of 3 October 2026; expect them from around January 2027.

What is the Sanford SPUR program?

SPUR is Sanford Research's 10-week summer undergraduate research program, running 1 June to 6 August 2027. Students work in a lab under a principal investigator, attend career workshops and present a poster. It pays a $6,000 stipend with free housing. Applications open in November and close 31 January 2027.

What GPA do you need for a Sanford Health internship?

Sanford doesn't publish a minimum GPA for any of its student programs. The nurse internship asks for a cumulative transcript instead, and corporate internships ask for a record of outstanding achievement and leadership. Strong grades still help, but no posted cutoff will screen you out automatically.

Is housing provided for Sanford nurse interns?

No. Sanford says housing isn't provided for Student Nurse Internship participants, though its program page lists housing assistance options and coordinators can help. SPUR is different: research students live free of charge on the University of Sioux Falls campus with a free daily shuttle.

Can high school students intern at Sanford Health?

Yes, in two ways. Sanford Research's PROMISE Scholars program takes students entering their senior year who are at least 16; summer 2027 applications opened 1 October 2026 and close 8 January 2027. Sanford also posts part-time High School Intern jobs at some local medical centers.

Nursing students have until 12 October 2026, so apply now. Everyone else has a few months before SPUR closes and the corporate postings arrive, which is enough time to finish a remote Externship project you can talk about in a Sanford interview.
