Last updated: October 2026
UChicago Medicine's main internship for summer 2027 is open now, and it has a hard deadline: the 2027 Administrative Internship, a 12-week paid summer program for master's students, takes applications by email until Friday 4 December 2026 at 5:00 p.m. CT. You apply this fall, you intern in summer 2027. Two other doors have already shut for this cycle: the 2027–28 Administrative Fellowship closed on 4 Sep 2026 and the QPI Administrative Fellowship on 10 Sep 2026.
This page is mostly for graduate health-administration students, plus nursing students planning for the Summer Nurse Extern Program, which is expected to post around December 2026 to January 2027.

Externships from Extern (remote project programs run by a separate company, not UChicago Medicine's clinical Nurse Extern Program) let you finish a real project for a real organization, most often over 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week. For an administrative application, the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship mirrors the service-line project work interns do, and the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship builds the data skills behind it.
What Is a UChicago Medicine Internship?
A UChicago Medicine internship most often means the Administrative Internship: a paid, 12-week summer placement where a graduate student works under an executive preceptor on one project defined before day one, then reports out to senior leadership. Past interns sat in Heart and Vascular, Patient Care Services, Emergency Medicine, Women's and Children's, and Ambulatory. UChicago Medicine is the academic health system on the University of Chicago campus, with roughly 13,000 employees.
It isn't the only route in. Nursing students have the clinical Summer Nurse Extern Program, and current students in pharmacy, respiratory care and radiology can take paid hourly student roles that are live on the careers board today.

When Do UChicago Medicine Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
UChicago Medicine runs its tracks on different calendars, and two of them already closed. The Administrative Internship page sets the dates outright: applications due 4 Dec 2026, interviews and final selection in December, start in May 2027 and finish in August. That's about five months from deadline to start. The nurse extern program is shorter-lead: for summer 2026, interviews started in mid-January and the program ran 1 Jun to 7 Aug 2026.
The nurse extern date is less reliable. The window moved about three months earlier between 2023, when documents were due 21 Apr, and 2026, so treat the December to January estimate for summer 2027 as a projection.
Mid-cycle. The 2027 Administrative Internship is open and due 4 Dec 2026; the 2027–28 Administrative and QPI fellowships closed in September. Student hourly roles in pharmacy, respiratory care and radiology are live on the careers board.
Administrative Internship informational webinar, 2 to 3 p.m. CST, registration linked from the internship page. Use it to hear how projects are scoped before you write your cover letter.
Administrative Internship deadline for summer 2027. Interviews and final selection follow in December. No late entry is described on the page.
Summer Nurse Extern Program for summer 2027 expected to post on the careers board, with interviews expected from about mid-January 2027, based on the 2026 cycle. Have BLS, a transcript and two references ready before it opens.
Administrative interns start in May 2027 and finish in August with a report-out to senior leadership. Nurse externs are expected to start in early June for 10 weeks of three 12-hour shifts a week.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
For the Administrative Internship, the urgency is a hard deadline, not a rolling queue: everything is due by email at 5:00 p.m. CT on 4 Dec 2026, and selection happens that same month. Don't leave it to the last week: the packet needs an official undergraduate transcript and proof of graduate enrollment, and registrar requests can take longer than you expect.
The nurse extern track behaves differently. It's a short window that, in 2026, went from posting to mid-January interviews quickly, so nursing students should watch the careers board from early December.
Which UChicago Medicine Internship Programs Should You Target?
UChicago Medicine's student options split into administrative, clinical and hourly tracks.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Administrative Internship | One leader-defined operations project with an executive preceptor; report-out to senior leadership | 12 weeks, May–Aug 2027 | Master's students conferring after Dec 2027; due 4 Dec 2026 by email; paid |
| Summer Nurse Extern Program | Clinical placement in Med-Surg, Adult ICU, Emergency or Pediatrics | 10 weeks (Jun–Aug) | Expected to post ~Dec 2026–Jan 2027; final-year BSN or direct-entry MSN, GPA 3.0+ (2026 req) |
| Specialty Nurse Intern | PICU or operating room experience | Year-round | Nursing students; rolling |
| Student hourly roles | Pharmacy (investigational drugs), respiratory care, radiology | Part-time, ongoing | Live now on the careers board; $18.00–$23.94/hr |
| Administrative and QPI Fellowships | One-year post-graduate leadership programs | 12 months from Jul 2027 | Closed for 2027–28 (4 Sep and 10 Sep 2026) |
Match the track to your degree first. The administrative route is graduate-only, and the clinical routes need current enrollment in the right program.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Each track has its own gate, and the Administrative Internship's is the tightest:
• Administrative Internship, degree: "Current enrollment in an accredited master's degree program (MHA, MPH, MBA, MS or related)".
• Administrative Internship, timing: "Expected degree conferral after December 2027", which in practice means first-year master's students.
• Nurse extern (2026 req): full-time in an accredited BSN or direct-entry MSN, entering your final year, GPA of at least 3.0, BLS, and two professional references.
• Student hourly roles: current enrollment in the matching program (pharmacy school, a respiratory care program in its second year, or radiology training).
• Visas: the fellowship pages say UChicago Medicine doesn't sponsor work visas for fellows; the internship page doesn't address it.

Which Nurse Extern Requirement Is Right?
The nursing-students page describes the program as open to sophomore and senior nursing students. The 2026 requisition was narrower: students entering their final year of a BSN or direct-entry MSN, with a 3.0 GPA.
The requisition is what recruiters screen against, so plan on the stricter version. If you're a sophomore, check the summer 2027 req when it posts before assuming you qualify.
What Skills Does UChicago Medicine Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Across the Administrative Internship page, the 2026 nurse extern requisition and the four student roles live today, one requirement appears everywhere: current enrollment in the right program. After that, the clinical roles lean on documentation accuracy in Epic or the radiology information system, patient care under supervision and BLS. The administrative page names leadership, analytical and communication skills.
Quality improvement shows up on both sides, in the pharmacy and radiology roles' project duties and in the administrative fellowships' performance-improvement work.

How Is Demand for Healthcare Interns Moving Right Now?
Healthcare administration intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 8 in August
Hospital-system administrative internships like UChicago Medicine's barely register in job-board volume, because they recruit through one dated application, not a posting. The deadline is what matters.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Pick the skill your application is thinnest on, and build it before 4 December.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Hospital operations and project work | Administrative Internship: an internship-spanning project defined by an executive leader, with a report-out to senior leadership | Healthcare Operations Consulting |
| Healthcare data and analysis | Administrative Internship: "leadership, analytical and communication skills" | TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics |
| Strategy communication for executives | Cover letter addressed to the System Chief Operating Officer; senior-leadership report-out | Corporate Strategy, mentored by Eric Ries |
| Health research data | Pediatric and research settings such as Comer Children's | ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics |
Keep the two meanings of "extern" apart in your application: an Extern Externship is a remote project you can cite as experience, while UChicago Medicine's Nurse Extern Program is its own paid clinical role. Cite only what you've finished.
What Is the UChicago Medicine Application and Interview Process Like?
The Administrative Internship process is short and published in full:
1. Optional webinar. Register for the 11 Nov 2026 informational session, 2 to 3 p.m. CST.
2. Build one PDF. Cover letter addressed to Krista Curell, System Chief Operating Officer; resume; official undergraduate transcript; proof of graduate enrollment.
3. Email it by the deadline. Send the single PDF to the address on the internship page by 5:00 p.m. CT on Friday 4 Dec 2026.
4. Interviews. UChicago Medicine interviews in December; the format isn't published.
5. Final selection. Decisions come in December, with a May 2027 start.
For the nurse extern track, the 2026 requisition asked for documents before the interview, so have your transcript, BLS card and two references (one from a nursing instructor) ready in December.
What Nursing Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has nothing on the Administrative Internship, but Chicago nursing students talk about timing and competition.
Asked where to find summer nursing internships in Chicago, one commenter named UChicago among the hospitals that run them and said applications usually open at the start of the new year or later. Another called them competitive and suggested a patient care tech or CNA job as a backup route in.
In a 2026 thread on Chicago new-grad nursing jobs, one nurse described UChicago as nearly impossible to get into without a connection, and others said the city's top systems expect a BSN and usually want you licensed first.
Chicago-area nurses said new grads there often can't apply until after passing the NCLEX, so classmates moving to other states had offers by March while Chicago hires waited until summer. That's why a student-era foot in the door matters here.
How Do You Stand Out for the UChicago Medicine Administrative Internship?
Three moves before 4 December. First, name a service line. Past interns worked in Heart and Vascular, Patient Care Services, Emergency Medicine, Women's and Children's, and Ambulatory, so say in the first paragraph which operational problem you'd want to own and why.
Second, write the cover letter for its real reader. It's addressed to the System Chief Operating Officer, who also sponsors the program, so lead with one result from your own work, a number if you have one, not a summary of your coursework.
Third, use the webinar. The 11 November session puts you in front of the program team and current fellows; one specific detail from it in your letter shows you did more than read the page.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 UChicago Medicine internship?
No. The summer 2026 programs have finished; the 2026 nurse extern program ran 1 June to 7 August. For summer 2027, the Administrative Internship is open until 4 December 2026, but the 2027–28 Administrative and QPI fellowships already closed in September, and the nurse extern posting is expected around December to January.
When is the UChicago Medicine Administrative Internship deadline?
Friday 4 December 2026 at 5:00 p.m. CT. You email one PDF with a cover letter, resume, official undergraduate transcript and proof of graduate enrollment. Interviews and final selection happen in December, and the 12-week internship runs May to August 2027. An informational webinar is set for 11 November.
Who can apply to the UChicago Medicine Administrative Internship?
Students currently enrolled in an accredited master's program, such as an MHA, MPH, MBA or MS, whose degree will be conferred after December 2027. In practice that means first-year master's students. Undergraduates aren't eligible for this program, though hourly student roles exist in clinical fields.
Is the UChicago Medicine Administrative Internship paid?
Yes. UChicago Medicine describes it as a 12-week, paid summer program, but it doesn't publish the rate. Hourly student roles do post pay: $18.00 to $21.00 an hour for the student pharmacy intern, $21.00 for respiratory care students and $20.53 to $23.94 for the radiology assistant role.
When does the UChicago Medicine Summer Nurse Extern Program open?
It's expected to post around December 2026 to January 2027 for summer 2027. In the 2026 cycle, interviews started in mid-January and the 10-week program ran 1 June to 7 August. The window moved earlier since 2023, so check the careers board from early December.
What are the nurse extern requirements at UChicago Medicine?
The 2026 requisition asked for full-time students in an accredited BSN or direct-entry MSN program entering their final year, with a GPA of at least 3.0, BLS certification and two professional references, one from a nursing instructor. The program page mentions sophomores too, but the requisition is the safer guide.
Does UChicago Medicine sponsor visas for interns?
The internship page doesn't say. The administrative fellowship pages state that UChicago Medicine doesn't sponsor work visas for administrative fellows, so international students should ask the program team directly before applying, ideally during the November webinar or by email well before the deadline.
Do UChicago Medicine interns get full-time offers?
UChicago Medicine doesn't publish a conversion rate. The nurse extern program is designed to support the move into a Staff Nurse role after graduation and licensure, and several past administrative fellows now hold leadership roles there. Treat a return offer as a possibility built through performance.
If you're a first-year master's student, put 4 December on your calendar today. Then build proof alongside it with a remote Externship, a project program from Extern that's separate from UChicago Medicine's clinical extern roles.
