Northwestern Medicine, the Chicago-area health system, had eight summer 2027 student postings live on jobs.nm.org on 26 October 2026, and most are business-side roles: graduate administration, law, patient access, general administration, finance process automation and communications, plus information services and supply chain. Six close on 29 November 2026 and the other two on 31 December 2026, and posted pay runs $17.00 to $25.00 an hour. In plain words: you apply this fall, you intern in summer 2027. The pre-health and nursing programs open later, on 11 December 2026.

Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern, separate from Northwestern Medicine's own programs. Most run 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week, so one fits before the 29 November and 31 December deadlines. The Healthcare Operations & Consulting Externship builds the process-improvement work NM's administrative interns do, and the ARCeH Data Analytics Externship gives you a finished health-data project. What Is a Northwestern Medicine Internship?

A Northwestern Medicine internship is a paid, project-based summer placement at an academic health system in the Chicago area. It isn't Northwestern Mutual, the insurer covered in our Northwestern Mutual guide, and it isn't Northwestern University. NM says more than 350 interns joined teams across its health system in 2025.

Interns start with a Day 1 orientation, work with a preceptor on a project, attend workshops and Lunch & Learns, and present the result to leaders at the end. Live business-side tracks: information services, supply chain, graduate administration, law, patient access, general administration, finance automation and communications. NM also runs clinical programs, including pre-med, pre-physician assistant, pre-psychology, radiology, clinical laboratory and student nurse internships, which this page labels as clinical.

When Do Northwestern Medicine Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Northwestern Medicine's summer 2027 deadlines are on the postings themselves. The Information Services and Supply Chain interns went up on 31 August 2026 and close 31 December 2026; the six others went up on 23 October and close 29 November. Pre-Med and Student Nurse Internship pages give application windows of 11 December 2026 to 8 January 2027 and 15 January 2027.

That's about 6 to 9 months of lead time before a May or June start. NM's workforce page also still reads "Summer 2026 applications will open by Friday, December 5, 2026". December 5, 2026 is a Saturday, and last year's window opened Friday, December 5, 2025, so that line is leftover text. Go by the posting deadlines on each requisition.

Eight summer 2027 postings are live on jobs.nm.org. Six of them close on 29 November, 34 days from today, and two close on 31 December.

29 November 2026HARD DEADLINE

Graduate Administrative, Law, Patient Access, General Administrative, Finance-Business Process Automation and Communication postings close. The date is the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so submit before the holiday week.

11 December 2026 – 15 January 2027

Pre-Med and Pre-PA applications run 11 Dec – 8 Jan, and the Student Nurse Internship runs 11 Dec – 15 Jan (clinical programs). The Information Services and Supply Chain postings close 31 December in the middle of this stretch.

February – April 2027EXPECTED

Interviews and decisions. Summer 2026 applicants on Reddit reported HireVue invitations in late February and offers arriving in waves from March through April. Those reports are anecdotal, and NM hasn't published a decision calendar.

Summer 2027 · 12 May – August

Programs start on 12 May, 26 May, 9 June or 23 June and run 8, 10 or 12 weeks, ending with a final project presentation to leaders.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

These are fixed deadlines with no late entry, so the question is which ones are closest. Six postings close on Sunday 29 November, and the Supply Chain and Information Services postings close on 31 December. The Graduate Administrative posting wants a resume, a one-page personal statement and a graduate transcript by 11:59 pm CST on 29 November.

Timing also moved. Last year's business-side window ran 5 December 2025 to 16 January 2026, so this year the administrative tracks opened about six weeks earlier and close about seven weeks earlier. Don't plan around last year's calendar.

Which Northwestern Medicine Internship Programs Should You Target?

Start with the business-side postings, which are open now. Clinical and pre-health programs are listed separately because they open in December and serve a different goal.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Each posting sets its own gates:

• General rule: you must be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program and have completed at least 2 semesters or 30 credit hours by the start. You commit to 8, 10 or 12 weeks.

• Undergraduate postings: current enrollment in an undergraduate program; a finished sophomore year is preferred. The Finance-Business Process Automation posting asks for a business or computer science major.

• Information Services: a high school diploma plus at least 2 semesters or 30 credit hours in an associate, bachelor's or master's program, and active enrollment at the start.

• Graduate Administrative (graduate-only): enrolled in an accredited graduate program such as an MHA, MPH, MBA or MPA. Upload a resume, a personal statement of one page or less and a graduate transcript.

• Law Intern (graduate-level): enrolled in an accredited program with the second year completed by the start.

• Pre-Med (clinical): four-year university students interested in becoming a physician. Student Nurse Internship (clinical): nursing students with BLS certification, with site-specific requirements.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

None of the postings we read states a GPA or work-authorization rule, so there's no published cutoff to clear. The Information Services posting says the most promising applications show strong academic performance and leadership, which tells you grades and campus roles both count. Email careers@nm.org if work authorization is a concern.

What Skills Does Northwestern Medicine Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We read all eight live summer 2027 postings in full. Every one is project-based, and half end in a presentation, which is the clearest signal about what NM wants: someone who can finish a defined piece of work and explain it to leaders.

The Information Services posting lists the most tools: SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau and ServiceNow. The finance posting names VBA macros and robotic process automation, and the administrative tracks mention process optimization and data analysis.

What Is the Northwestern Medicine Application and Interview Process Like?

NM's workforce page lays out the steps:

1. Apply. On jobs.nm.org, choose Browse by Category, then Internships & Summer Opportunities, and submit the form for each posting you want. Graduate Administrative also needs a resume, a personal statement of one page and a transcript.

2. Recruiter review, then a video interview or phone screen. A recruiter reviews your file and contacts you with next steps. Summer 2026 applicants on Reddit described a recorded HireVue interview.

3. Hiring manager interview. You may be asked to schedule one before decisions are made.

4. Offer. NM reaches out by email and through a scheduled call to make an offer and explain what happens after you accept.

5. Internship. Day 1 orientation, a preceptor, project work, workshops and a final presentation to leaders at the end.

What Students on Reddit Say

Summer 2026 applicants on Reddit mostly talk about timing and the HireVue interview. Two of the three threads below are about the clinical programs, since those draw the most discussion.

Undergraduate internship applicants who did their HireVue in the last week of February were still waiting in late March, while those who interviewed around 20 to 22 February already had offers. Replies wondered whether decisions were rolling instead of all at once.

A pre-med internship applicant said an online interview invitation arrived about two days after the submission deadline, and a commenter thought there was only one interview round. Others were still waiting for invitations in mid-February.

Pre-psychology applicants who finished the HireVue interview in March were still waiting in late April. One commenter said last year's decisions arrived between the end of April and early May, and one reported a rejection on 28 April.

How Do You Stand Out for a Northwestern Medicine Internship?

Three moves, all doable before the deadlines.

Apply before Thanksgiving. Six postings close on a Sunday holiday weekend. Submit by the week of 23 November so a late file doesn't cost you the posting.

Match the track to your degree. Information Services wants you to name a domain area, such as analytics or software development. Graduate Administrative wants a clear one-page statement on the operations problem you'd like to solve. Finance wants business or computer science majors.

Show a finished project. Every posting is project-based and many end in a presentation. A project you completed and explained is better evidence than a list of interests.

NM doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate. It does say many past interns have begun careers there.

NM says more than 350 interns joined teams across its health system in 2025. That count includes clinical and pre-health programs as well as business-side ones, and NM doesn't break it down by track or publish an applicant count. Treat it as a scale indicator, not an acceptance rate.

Can graduate students apply to Northwestern Medicine internships?

Yes. The Graduate Administrative Intern posting is for students in accredited graduate programs such as an MHA, MPH or MBA and pays $25.00 an hour. Law interns must have finished their second year. NM also lists graduate pre-med and pre-PA gap-year programs and a graduate information services track on its workforce page.

Northwestern Medicine's first deadline is 29 November. Apply before Thanksgiving, and use the weeks before it to build proof: a remote Externship gives you a finished project to describe.
