USAA Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Deadlines & How to Apply

Last updated: August 2026

USAA is a Fortune 500 company at #93 (per Fortune, 2026) serving 14.3 million members with a 38,000-person workforce, and it runs a 10-week summer internship across four cities through two recruiting waves a year, Fall (August–November) and Spring (January–March). Interns are treated as full-time employees, get immediate USAA membership, and the published hourly rates across tracks run from $19 to $35 an hour.

And you don't have to be a veteran to work at USAA. That's USAA's own words, not ours.

Two waves, one summer. USAA's Fall wave (August–November) is the next door to open, expected within weeks for summer 2027. There's no published deadline for any intern role. Yet 10 of 11 requisitions say apply the same day you view the posting. A Spring wave (January–March) follows as a second chance at the same cohort.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project with a real company. What Is a USAA Internship?

A USAA internship is a paid, 10-week summer placement across four cities: San Antonio, Plano, Phoenix and Charlotte. Interns are treated as full-time employees with most benefits from day one.

And the published hourly rates across tracks run from $19 to $35, with data, analytics and technology roles at the top. USAA is named to Fortune's World's Most Admired Companies for a 10th consecutive year and was recognized as a Great Place to Work in 2026 (82% of employees said so, against a 57% benchmark).

And here's the fact this page exists to deliver: you don't need a military connection to intern there. USAA membership is restricted to the military community, but employment isn't. And interns actually receive immediate USAA membership as a perk.

When Do USAA Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

USAA recruits interns through two waves a year, Fall (August–November) and Spring (January–March). Both feed the same 10-week summer cohort. But on August 15, 2026, USAA's own Workday board showed 162 open requisitions and zero intern-titled roles, and its own internship search returned "There are 0 jobs". USAA's page explains what that means: "If your search returns no results, that means we are not currently accepting applications."

So the Fall wave for summer 2027 is expected to open within weeks, not months.

Now · August 2026YOU ARE HERE

USAA's intern job board shows zero postings, which is normal between waves. But USAA says its Fall wave runs August through November, so the next open door is weeks away. Use this window to rebuild your resume around one requisition's minimum requirements line by line, and set a job alert so the Fall wave doesn't pass you.

Fall wave for summer 2027 expected to open here, projected from the documented Fall-2025 wave (earliest req withdrawn by 24 Sep 2025). USAA's own reqs say: “this posting will remain open until the position is filled… apply the same day you view this posting.” There is no deadline; the only cutoff is someone else getting hired.

~Oct 2026 – Jan 2027EXPECTED

Fall reqs roll closed as they fill (2026 cycle: Audit and IT Audit withdrawn 4 Dec, Quantitative Risk 30 Dec). If you missed the Fall wave, the Spring wave is your second chance at the same summer cohort, not a consolation round.

~Jan – Mar 2027EXPECTED

Spring wave opens for summer 2027 (2026 cycle: Finance FLP closed 14 Jan, Risk IT Systems Analyst 16 Mar). Same process: OA, recruiter screen, behavioral and technical round. Same summer cohort starting late May.

Summer 2027 · ~27 May – 7 Aug

Ten weeks across San Antonio, Plano, Phoenix or Charlotte. Assigned a manager and a mentor, real project work, treated as a full-time employee with most benefits, immediate USAA membership. USAA calls the internship a pipeline into its named rotational programs: FDP (finance, 3 yr), Finance FLP (2.5 yr), and 2-year risk and audit rotations.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

USAA answers the deadline question in its own requisitions. Ten of the eleven intern postings we read carry the same sentence: "this posting will remain open until the position is filled. Thus, interested candidates are encouraged to apply the same day you view this posting." USAA's own student-programs page reinforces it: "Spaces for the program are limited, and pretty competitive, so, we recommend you apply early." So there's no published deadline for any USAA intern role. The only cutoff is someone else getting hired.

And with 33% of interviews coming through campus recruiting (Glassdoor, n=22), showing up at a USAA campus event is a genuine second channel, not a footnote.

Which USAA Internship Programs Should You Target?

USAA posts function-specific intern requisitions across 14 business areas, not a handful of named tracks. Which should you target? The one whose minimum requirements you can satisfy 100%. USAA says "if you do not meet ALL (100%) of the minimum requirements, you cannot be considered."

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

USAA's requirements are unusually explicit, and the biggest misconception is worth clearing up first:

Military connection: not required. USAA says it directly: "No, you don't have to be a veteran to work at USAA." USAA membership is restricted to the military community, but employment isn't. Interns receive immediate USAA membership as a perk.

Enrollment: pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher at a 4-year accredited university, graduating after the internship ends. Most interns are between junior and senior year. But check the graduation date first.

Graduation-date window: the real gate, and it's strict. Several 2026-cycle reqs specified a two-month window (Audit: "graduation date must be in May/June 2027").

Visa sponsorship: every 2026-cycle USAA intern posting we read stated: "USAA does not provide visa sponsorship for this role."

The 100% rule: USAA warns: "If you do not meet ALL (100%) of the minimum requirements, you cannot be considered. The recruiter must be able to see how you meet the minimum requirements on your resume."

Overhead close-up of a ceramic coffee mug, a well-worn financial calculator, and a spiral notebook with handwritten figu

Do You Need a Military Connection to Intern at USAA?

No, and USAA says so in three separate places. Its careers FAQ answers the question directly: "No, you don't have to be a veteran to work at USAA." Its own requisition boilerplate says "not all of our employees served in our nation's military, but we all share in the mission to give back to those who did." And its employer profile says "whether you're connected to the military or not, we're always looking for talented individuals." Here's the distinction: USAA membership, meaning who can buy its insurance and banking products, is restricted to the military community and their families. Employment isn't. And the proof is in the perks: interns receive immediate USAA membership on day one. An employer that hands you membership as a perk can't be requiring you to already have it.

What Skills Does USAA Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Eleven USAA function-specific intern requisitions (eight from the 2026 cycle and three from 2025) repeat one profile with a distinctly quantitative lean for an insurance company. Risk and compliance frameworks dominate (10 of 11), and data analysis tools show up in eight. Yet the anti-requirement is the military one: zero of eleven requisitions mention a military connection.

So what sets USAA apart from a typical insurance internship? The tech stack. USAA's own JDs name SQL, SAS, R, Python, Tableau and IT risk frameworks (COBIT, NIST, ISO) across most tracks, while the aggregate P&C insurance-intern market is communication-and-Excel led (communication 84%, Excel 48%, Python 5%).

Method: full-text analysis of 11 USAA function-specific intern requisitions (8 from the 2026 recruiting cycle and 3 from 2025), read in full and projected forward to 2027. USAA had zero live intern requisitions on 15 August 2026 (162 open reqs on its Workday board, none intern-titled), which is normal between its Fall and Spring recruiting waves. Function-mix caveat: 5 of the 11 sit in risk, audit and compliance functions, so the risk-framework and controls bars run ahead of where they would land across USAA's full 14-area intern catalog; there's no claims or underwriting requisition in the sample because USAA doesn't post one.

Communication (84%) and Excel (48%) gate the aggregate P&C intern role; Python sits at 5.4% and SQL at 4.5%. But USAA's own JDs are markedly more technical, naming SQL, SAS, R, Python and Tableau across most tracks
Advertised pay clusters at ~$20/hr in the aggregate market (median ~$19.75, Adzuna, n=6 with stated pay); USAA's employer-printed range tops out at $35/hr, nearly double the market median

August 2026 is this tracker's baseline month, so month-over-month shifts appear at the September update. The early signal: the P&C insurance intern market is communication-led and modestly paid, but USAA sits at the technical and pay ceiling of the category.

Method: aggregate analysis of US underwriting, claims and risk-management intern postings via Adzuna and Indeed, August 2026 baseline. Salary.com benchmark for Underwriting Intern = $27/hr ($55,977/yr). Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.

What Is the USAA Application and Interview Process Like?

USAA's intern funnel runs four to five steps, and it starts the moment you apply:

1. Apply at usaajobs.com/intern when postings appear. Between waves the search returns zero results, and that's normal. Set a job alert so the Fall wave doesn't pass you. Meet 100% of the minimum requirements; the recruiter must see them on your resume.

2. Online assessment, on applying. For technology roles the OA comes first: three coding questions, easy, medium and medium (community-reported). Non-technical roles get role-specific employment assessments. And USAA notes: "Only if a candidate meets the position's qualifications, will you be notified via email with instructions for any employment assessments."

3. Recruiter phone screen. Confirms graduation date and education details against the minimum requirements, plus "why USAA" and basic behavioral questions. Community-reported length: roughly 15 minutes. But it matters.

4. Behavioral + technical round. Often one session split roughly 30 minutes behavioral, 30 minutes technical. Software candidates report LeetCode-easy difficulty: "given an array of numbers, how would you get the 3 smallest numbers." And one candidate described a five-question format split three behavioral, two technical.

5. Offer + background check. USAA: "Applicants who accept a contingent offer of employment must satisfactorily meet all requirements of the comprehensive background check, which includes drug testing."

So how fast does it move? Glassdoor reports an average of 24 days from interview to hire for USAA SWE interns (n=21), with an interview difficulty of 2.7 out of 5 and an 81% positive experience rating. And 33% of candidates got the interview through campus recruiting, making USAA's events calendar a genuine second channel.

How Do You Stand Out at a Company with a 100% Requirements Rule?

Three moves, starting with the literal one. Mirror the minimum requirements line by line on your resume. USAA is unusually explicit: "if you do not meet ALL (100%) of the minimum requirements, you cannot be considered. The recruiter must be able to see how you meet the minimum requirements on your resume." Check the graduation-date window first; several reqs specify a two-month window. Second, apply the day the requisition posts. Ten of eleven USAA intern postings carry the same sentence: "apply the same day you view this posting." So there's no published deadline, just someone else getting hired.

And third, work the campus channel. A third of USAA intern interviews (33%, n=22 on Glassdoor) came through campus recruiting, and USAA runs events year-round, even between waves. Check the events calendar.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 USAA internship?

No. That class started 27 May 2026 and ran through 7 August 2026, and its requisitions closed between September 2025 and March 2026. On 15 August 2026 USAA's job board showed 162 open roles and zero internships.

But the next open door is the Fall wave for summer 2027, expected around late August to September 2026.

When do USAA internship applications open for summer 2027?

USAA recruits interns in two waves a year: Fall, August through November, and Spring, January through March. Both fill the same summer program. Applications for summer 2027 are expected to open in the Fall wave around late August to September 2026, roughly nine months before a late-May 2027 start.

Do I need a military connection to intern at USAA?

No. USAA answers this directly: "No, you don't have to be a veteran to work at USAA." Its own job postings say "not all of our employees served in our nation's military." But USAA membership is restricted to the military community, while employment isn't. Interns actually receive immediate USAA membership as a perk.

Are USAA internships rolling?

Yes. Ten of the eleven USAA intern requisitions we read carry the same line: "this posting will remain open until the position is filled. Thus, interested candidates are encouraged to apply the same day you view this posting." USAA publishes no deadline for any intern role. So apply the week your track posts.

What are the eligibility requirements for a USAA internship?

You must be pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher at a four-year accredited university and graduate after the internship ends. Most interns are between junior and senior year. USAA warns that missing any single minimum requirement disqualifies you. Every 2026-cycle posting we read stated USAA doesn't provide visa sponsorship.

What is the USAA intern interview process like?

Usually four steps: an online assessment on applying, a recruiter phone screen confirming your graduation date, a combined behavioral and technical round of roughly thirty minutes each, then a contingent offer with a background check and drug test. Software candidates report three coding questions rated easy, medium and medium.

Where are USAA internships located?

Four cities: San Antonio and Plano in Texas, Phoenix in Arizona, and Charlotte in North Carolina. San Antonio is the headquarters and appeared in ten of the eleven requisitions we read. Roles are predominantly in-office; a requisition's Location and Secondary Locations fields state whether remote work is approved.

How much do USAA interns get paid?

USAA prints an hourly range in every intern posting, and across the eleven we read those ranges span roughly $19 to $35 an hour. Data and analytics and technology roles sat highest, at $24 to $35. Every posting also promises an intern stipend, though USAA doesn't publish the amount.

The Fall wave opens any day now. USAA itself says it runs August through November, and there's no deadline to work back from, just rolling review and someone else getting hired. Spend the remaining days on proof: a remote Externship turns "I know SQL and Excel" into a finished project your week-one application can point at.
