Last updated: October 2026
TruStage's summer 2027 internships are open now. The Madison, Wisconsin insurer, called CUNA Mutual Group until 2023, had six summer 2027 intern postings live on its job board on October 5, 2026: actuarial, finance and accounting, two investment roles (fixed income and commercial mortgage loans), enterprise IT and legal compliance. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
Every role runs 10 weeks, June 1 to August 6, 2027 (actuarial starts May 31), at the Madison headquarters. Pay is printed on each posting: $18 to $28 an hour, or $24 to $32 an hour for actuarial interns depending on exams passed. None of the postings lists a deadline, and last year TruStage also hired data science, UX and design interns, roles that haven't been posted for 2027 yet.
What Is a TruStage Internship?
A TruStage internship is a paid, 10-week summer program at TruStage Financial Group, the insurance, annuity and investment company that was called CUNA Mutual Group until it took the TruStage name in May 2023. Founded in 1935 to serve credit unions and their members, it's headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, and its about page cites 42 million consumer relationships and $36.1 billion in assets under management. Interns join one department and work on real projects, from pricing models to loan valuations. It's a different organization from CUNA Inc., the credit union trade group. TruStage's website notes it's still restoring some systems after a cybersecurity attack identified on July 11; its job board took internship postings in September.

When Do TruStage Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
TruStage posted its summer 2027 internships between September 2 and 24, 2026, about eight to nine months before the June 1, 2027 start. Last year's calendar was almost the same: archived copies of its board show summer 2026 roles already live by September 7 to 20, 2025, so the timing looks stable. This year's wave is smaller so far, six roles against at least nine last year, when TruStage also hired in data science, UX design and creative design. Those roles were still being advertised between October 2025 and January 2026, so similar 2027 roles could appear later this fall or winter. Applications for summer 2028 are expected around September 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: six roles in actuarial, finance and accounting, fixed income, mortgage loans, enterprise IT and legal compliance, all in Madison.
No posting states a deadline. The actuarial role has 4 to 6 seats and every other role is a single posting, so the earlier you apply, the more seats are still open.
Phone or video interviews; TruStage says it never makes an offer without one. Data science, UX or design roles may be added, as they were last cycle between October 2025 and January 2026.
The internship runs 10 weeks, June 1 to August 6, 2027 (actuarial from May 31), at the Madison headquarters. Emerging Professional Program interns can be considered for roles at TruStage afterward.
Applications for summer 2028 are expected, based on September postings in both 2025 and 2026.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
TruStage doesn't print a deadline, so the risk isn't a cutoff date but seats. The actuarial posting says "Positions: 4-6 interns," and each of the other five roles is a single posting for one department. Last cycle some roles stayed up for months, but that's no promise: a posting can come down once the team has its interns. TruStage also says it may use an AI tool to give each application a screening score against the posting's requirements, so a resume that mirrors the posting's own skills list is worth the extra hour. Apply in October while all six are live.
Which TruStage Internship Programs Should You Target?
TruStage runs two paths: the Early Development Program, which its postings call "most appropriate for freshmen and sophomores," and the Emerging Professional Program for students close to graduating. Here are the six summer 2027 roles.
| Role | What you do | Format | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Actuarial | Pricing, reserving or modeling across property and casualty, life, annuity, retirement or health; 4 to 6 interns | May 31 to Aug 6; in person; $24 to $32 an hour | Excel, Python, SQL or R; SOA or CAS exams preferred, not required |
| Finance/Accounting | One or two of business finance, tax, accounting operations, external reporting, treasury, internal audit, internal controls or market risk | Jun 1 to Aug 6; hybrid | Accounting, finance or economics; 3.4 GPA |
| Investments, Mortgage Loans | Valuations and watchlist work on a $5 billion commercial mortgage portfolio of over 760 loans | Jun 1 to Aug 6; in person | Financial statements, Argus, Excel, real estate analysis |
| Fixed Income | Corporate and structured credit research with the Head of Credit Research; final investment recommendation | Jun 1 to Aug 6; in person | Advanced Excel, Bloomberg, Python or SQL preferred; CFA interest |
| Enterprise Information & Technology | Develop, test and document business systems; application development or infrastructure and cloud | Jun 1 to Aug 6; in person; no housing stipend | C#, JavaScript, .NET, Azure, Git; associate's degree or higher |
| Legal Compliance | Research regulations, help with audits, compliance reviews and regulatory filings | Jun 1 to Aug 6; hybrid | Business, law or insurance; MS Office; confidentiality |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The six summer 2027 postings share most requirements:
• Graduation date: an expected graduation of December 2027 or later, on all six postings.
• Degree level: undergraduates on most roles; actuarial also takes graduate students, Legal Compliance takes bachelor's or master's students, and Enterprise IT asks for an associate's degree or higher.
• Class year: the Early Development Program path is described as "most appropriate for freshmen and sophomores," so first- and second-year students are in scope.
• GPA: only Finance/Accounting names one, 3.4 or higher.
• Work authorization: five postings say candidates who need sponsorship "are not eligible to apply"; the actuarial posting welcomes them.
• Location: in person or hybrid at the Madison, Wisconsin headquarters for all six.

Does TruStage Sponsor Visas for Interns?
Only on the actuarial internship. Its posting says "We welcome applications from candidates who now or in the future may require company sponsorship," while the other five say those candidates aren't eligible. So if you'll need sponsorship, the actuarial role is your one door this cycle. It doesn't require a passed exam, though one or more SOA or CAS exams is listed as preferred.

What Skills Does TruStage Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Every TruStage posting repeats the same core list: analytical and critical thinking, communication, interpersonal and customer service skills, and intellectual curiosity. The differences sit in the preferred experience. Actuarial asks for Excel (formulas, PivotTables, lookups), plus Python, SQL or R and actuarial software. Investment roles ask for advanced Excel models, Bloomberg, Argus valuations and an interest in the CFA. Enterprise IT lists C#, JavaScript, .NET, Azure and Git, and legal compliance asks for regulatory research and confidentiality.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each TruStage skill below maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to discuss in your interview.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Credit research and investment recommendations | Fixed Income: "preparing a presentation for an investment recommendation or sector review" | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| Financial statements and valuation | Mortgage Loans: "Prepare valuations using Argus software and direct capitalization proforma analysis" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Deal screening and memos | Mortgage Loans: "underwrite new loan opportunities" | Mangusta Capital Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis |
| SQL and data work | Actuarial: "Creating and running actuarial programs on PolySystems, GGY Axis, ResQ, Python, SQL, or R" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Business systems and automation | Enterprise IT: "develop, test, implement, document and maintain business systems solutions" | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
The fixed income match is the closest: TruStage's intern ends the summer presenting an investment recommendation, which is the same deliverable the Yinan Zhao project builds toward.
What Is the TruStage Application and Interview Process Like?
TruStage doesn't publish its interview rounds, but its postings and careers page tell you this much:
1. Apply on Workday. Each role is a separate posting, and "A resume is required to apply."
2. Screening. TruStage says it may use an AI tool that gives each application a screening score against the posting's requirements; recruiters treat the score as a guide, and you can opt out.
3. Phone or video interview. TruStage says it will never "extend an offer without conducting a phone or video interview." A 2015 intern on Reddit described getting the offer after a phone interview.
4. Path assignment. Interns join the Early Development Program or the Emerging Professional Program, depending on how close they are to graduating.
5. Offer and start. The program runs June 1 to August 6, 2027; actuarial interns start May 31.

What the Community Says
Reddit has only one thread from a TruStage intern, from its CUNA Mutual days, so two cards come from more recent intern reviews on Indeed.
A student who'd just landed a CUNA Mutual summer internship after a phone interview asked about the culture. A current employee called it a great place for a young professional to make a name, with top facilities; two former developers described a manager-heavy IT culture.
A Madison intern described understanding managers who put work-life balance first, and said they hoped to come back full-time.
A remote summer intern said the role was people-oriented and the pay decent for an intern, but worried they weren't learning as much as they could.
How Do You Stand Out for a TruStage Internship?
Three moves. First, match the posting's words. TruStage may score applications against each posting's requirements, so name the tools it lists that you've really used: Excel PivotTables and Python for actuarial, Bloomberg and Excel models for fixed income, C# or Azure for IT. Second, know the credit union angle. TruStage was founded to protect credit unions and their members; connect your interest to that customer base, and search the older name, CUNA Mutual Group, when you research alumni. Third, pick the right path. Freshmen and sophomores fit the Early Development Program; seniors-to-be should aim at the Emerging Professional Program, which is built as a pathway to roles at TruStage. TruStage publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 TruStage internship?
No. TruStage's summer 2026 program ran June to August 2026. The open door now is summer 2027: on October 5, 2026 it had six intern postings live for June 1 to August 6, 2027, in actuarial, finance, fixed income, mortgage loans, IT and legal compliance, with no deadline listed.
Is TruStage the same as CUNA Mutual Group?
Yes. CUNA Mutual Group brought its businesses under the single TruStage brand on May 23, 2023, and older reviews and alumni still use the CUNA Mutual name. It's a different organization from CUNA Inc., the credit union trade association, which shares the CUNA name.
How much do TruStage interns make?
Five summer 2027 postings list $18 to $28 an hour, depending on experience, year in school and previous internships. The actuarial internship pays $24 to $32 an hour, depending on exams passed and prior internships. Actuarial and finance interns may also get housing, transportation and relocation support.
When do TruStage internship applications close?
No posting lists a deadline. Last cycle, some roles were still advertised months after they opened, but seats are limited: 4 to 6 actuarial interns and one posting for each other role. Apply this fall, while all six summer 2027 roles are live.
Does TruStage sponsor visas for interns?
Only for the actuarial internship, which welcomes candidates who now or in the future may need company sponsorship. The other five summer 2027 postings say candidates who need sponsorship aren't eligible, so international students should focus on the actuarial role this cycle.
Can freshmen apply for a TruStage internship?
Yes, if they meet the graduation rule. Postings ask for an expected graduation date of December 2027 or later, and the Early Development Program path is described as most appropriate for freshmen and sophomores. Finance/Accounting adds a 3.4 GPA, and Enterprise IT accepts associate's degree students.
Where are TruStage internships located?
All six summer 2027 internships are at TruStage's headquarters at 5910 Mineral Point Road in Madison, Wisconsin, in person or hybrid. Some board listings show "Wisconsin - Remote," but the postings themselves name the Madison office. The Enterprise IT role says it isn't eligible for a housing stipend.
Does TruStage hire interns full-time?
TruStage doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its Emerging Professional Program path is designed so interns can be considered for roles at TruStage after graduating. Indeed intern reviews are mixed: one 2023 intern hoped to return full-time, while a 2021 intern said there were few openings to stay on.
TruStage's six summer 2027 internships are open now with no deadline printed, so apply this fall. In parallel, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to discuss in your TruStage interview.
