The Nuclear Company (TNC) is a nuclear project developer, not the nuclear industry in general, and it has nine intern requisitions open on its Greenhouse board today. Eight are in Washington, DC: Software Engineering, AI/ML Engineering, Data Science and AI Applied Research, each posted for Spring 2027 and for Summer 2027. The ninth is a Columbia, South Carolina post for "10 motivated engineering interns." The DC roles pay "$25.00 an hour plus a $2,000 monthly housing stipend."

The DC postings also require U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident status and offer no visa sponsorship, because of export controls. In plain words: you apply in fall 2026, you intern in spring or summer 2027. None of the nine shows a closing date, and the postings went up between 7 August and 8 September 2026.

Extern's Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern. Most run 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week, so one fits before the January Spring cohort starts. The SQL & Database Architecture Externship builds the database basics behind TNC's data roles, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship practices cost and forecast modeling. What Is The Nuclear Company Internship?

An internship at The Nuclear Company is a paid student role at a nuclear project developer. TNC calls itself "a nuclear project development and delivery company" and is building a Nuclear Operating System (NOS), an AI-driven platform that runs the regulatory, supply chain, cost, schedule and field work behind reactor construction. Its Washington, DC interns work on that software or on its data and research, and its Columbia, SC interns support engineering and construction projects.

TNC was founded by veterans of the team that brought Vogtle Units 3 and 4 online. On 4 May 2026 it announced a planned partnership with Brookfield to form a company for Westinghouse AP1000 and AP300 projects, including the V.C. Summer units in South Carolina, subject to approvals and definitive agreements. This is the first intern cycle we can document: we found no earlier TNC intern postings, so don't expect a long alumni record.

When Do The Nuclear Company Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

TNC's postings carry their own publication dates. The Software Engineering, AI/ML and Data Science postings, for both Spring and Summer 2027, were published on 7 August 2026. The AI Applied Research ones followed on 14 August, and the Columbia, SC engineering post on 8 September. That's about nine months before a May 2027 start and about five months before the January Spring cohort. All nine show an "updated" stamp of 22 September, a batch edit that isn't a posting date. Because this is TNC's first documented cycle, the summer 2028 timing is a projection from one data point.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

All nine intern postings are live on Greenhouse with no closing date. Pick the term first: the Spring 2027 roles start in January, so they are the nearest window. Check U.S. person status before you apply to the DC roles.

Apply first, then build proof for the interview: the SQL & Database Architecture Externship for the data and platform roles or the ARCeH Data Analytics Externship for applied analytics.

January 2027

The Spring 2027 cohort (January to June) starts, on site in Washington, DC five days a week.

May – August 2027

The 12-week Summer 2027 cohort runs, in DC and at Columbia, SC.

Summer 2028 cycle (expected)EXPECTED

Postings for summer 2028 are expected from about August 2027, by analogy with the 7 August 2026 publication date. One observed cycle, so low confidence.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

TNC hires one posting per role and per term, and none shows a closing date, so a posting can be pulled the day it fills. The program is small: the only class size stated is 10 interns in Columbia, SC, and each DC role is a single posting. The Spring 2027 roles start in January, so they close first. Both the summer software and AI/ML postings also carry a leftover line about a "full six-month term," so confirm the term length with a recruiter once you reach the interview. Apply while the roles are listed, then confirm the details with the recruiter.

Which Internship Programs Should You Target at The Nuclear Company?

Eight of the nine postings are DC software, AI and data roles. The ninth is the engineering post in South Carolina.

TNC's Traveling Apprentice / Early Career role is a skilled-trades apprenticeship, not a student internship, so it's not covered here. All postings are on the Greenhouse board.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The postings state the gates plainly:

• Software, AI/ML and Data Science (DC): currently enrolled in a BS in computer science, software or computer engineering, mathematics, physics or a related technical field (Data Science also accepts an MS).

• AI Applied Research (DC): currently pursuing an MS or PhD in computer science, ML, operations research, applied math, economics or statistics.

• Columbia, SC: bachelor's or master's in nuclear, mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical or a related engineering discipline. The posting says "completed at least sophomore year by summer 2026," which is stale wording on a 2027 role, so read it as sophomore standing or above.

• U.S. person status (DC): U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, with no visa sponsorship.

• GPA: none stated.

Do You Need to Be a U.S. Citizen?

For the DC roles, yes or a lawful permanent resident: the postings cite DOE 10 CFR Part 810 and NRC export controls and say TNC doesn't sponsor visas for them. The Columbia, SC posting doesn't state the requirement, but it carries an export-control paragraph saying TNC may limit consideration of certain applicants. If you're an international student, ask the recruiter about the South Carolina role before applying, and don't apply to the DC ones.

What Skills Does The Nuclear Company Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Across the nine postings, Python and modeling or forecasting appear in every one. Most of the DC roles also name cloud work on AWS or GovCloud and the Palantir Foundry platform, and about half ask for experience with LLM APIs, retrieval or agent tool-calling. The Columbia engineering interns instead list Excel, MATLAB, Python and CAD, plus technical writing. TNC's posting for software interns says the work includes "AI-powered software," so bring something you've shipped.

What Is the Application and Interview Process Like at The Nuclear Company?

TNC publishes the application route but not the interview stages. Here's what's confirmed:

1. Choose your term and role. Each of the nine is a separate posting. Read the U.S. person line first if you're applying to a DC role.

2. Apply on Greenhouse through the posting link. The postings warn that TNC only emails from @thenuclearcompany.com addresses and won't ask for payment.

3. Interview. Stages and timing aren't published, and we found no first-hand intern interview reports.

4. Offer and start. Spring 2027 starts in January; Summer 2027 runs May to August, on site five days a week in DC.

5. Housing. DC postings offer a $2,000 monthly housing stipend and "full housing and relocation" for interns outside the DC area.

Our STAR method guide covers the behavioral questions that engineering and tech interviews lean on.

What Students on Reddit Say

We found no Reddit thread about TNC internships. The two company-level r/nuclear threads we tried couldn't be read, so this section has no quote cards. Treat the postings as the primary source.

How Do You Stand Out for a Nuclear Company Internship?

Three moves, all doable before the Spring cohort fills.

Bring shipped work. The software postings ask for "a track record of shipping working software (course projects, personal projects, or prior internships or co-ops)." Link one repository that runs.

Show the AI-first fit. TNC says every employee is expected to use AI and its Nuclear Operating System in their role. Describe how you've used LLM tools or automation in a real project.

Be ready for the domain. The posting says "Familiarity with nuclear engineering concepts (not required, we teach the domain)." Read TNC's 4 May 2026 Brookfield announcement so you can say why the V.C. Summer work interests you. TNC publishes no return-offer rate, and it's hiring a director to design pipeline programs including internship-to-hire, so ask about the path.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Nuclear Company internship?

No, and we found no summer 2026 intern postings on TNC's board or earlier intern cohorts, so 2027 is the first cycle we can document. Nine intern postings are open now: eight in Washington, DC, split between Spring and Summer 2027, and one in Columbia, South Carolina.

When do The Nuclear Company's summer 2027 internship applications open?

They already opened. TNC published the DC postings on August 7 and 14, 2026, and the Columbia, South Carolina engineering post on September 8. No closing date is printed on any of them, so apply while they are listed. Spring 2027 postings, starting in January, will close first.

How much do Nuclear Company interns get paid?

The DC postings say $25.00 an hour plus a $2,000 monthly housing stipend, paid bi-weekly. The Columbia, South Carolina post lists $25 an hour and doesn't mention housing. The DC postings also list a 401k match and medical, dental and vision plans, though they don't say whether interns qualify for all of them.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen for a Nuclear Company internship?

For the DC roles, yes, or a lawful permanent resident. The postings cite DOE 10 CFR Part 810 and NRC export controls and say TNC doesn't provide visa sponsorship. The Columbia, South Carolina post doesn't state the rule but carries an export-control paragraph, so ask the recruiter before applying.

How long is a Nuclear Company internship?

The Summer 2027 postings describe a 12-week internship from May to August. The Spring 2027 postings run January to June. Two summer postings also repeat a line about a full six-month term, which looks left over from the spring template, so confirm your dates when you interview.

Are Nuclear Company internships only for software students?

No. Eight of the nine are software, AI/ML, data science and AI research roles in DC, but the ninth is for engineering students in Columbia, South Carolina, covering mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical or nuclear systems. The AI Applied Research role requires an MS or PhD.

Does The Nuclear Company provide housing for interns?

For the DC roles, yes in the form of a $2,000 monthly housing stipend, and the postings add "full housing and relocation" for interns outside the DC area. The Columbia, South Carolina posting doesn't mention housing, so ask the recruiter. DC interns work on site five days a week.

Does The Nuclear Company convert interns to full-time?

TNC publishes no conversion rate and no return-offer data. The only class size stated is 10 interns in Columbia, South Carolina. The company is hiring a Director of Nuclear Workforce Pipeline Development to design programs that include internship-to-hire, which suggests the pathway is still being built.

TNC's nine intern postings are open with no closing date, and the January Spring cohort will fill first. A remote Externship such as the SQL & Database Architecture Externship can run alongside your application and give you a project to discuss in the interview.
