HarperCollins' summer and spring 2027 internship applications are closed: they opened September 18, 2026 and shut on October 1, 2026 at 11:59pm ET, a 13-day window. The summer program pays $18 an hour for 28 hours a week over 10 weeks (June 7 to August 12, 2027, on the postings we read), in New York or Nashville, according to HarperCollins' internship page. The next window is expected in mid to late September 2027, with low confidence, because only one dated cycle is published. In plain words: the next open door is for summer 2028, so you apply in fall 2027 and intern in summer 2028.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often in 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights Externship builds the audience insight that book marketing and publicity use, and the SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games Externship builds the sales tracking and data skills behind the National Accounts Sales role. What Is a HarperCollins Internship?

A HarperCollins internship is a paid 10-week placement at one of the largest book publishers in the US, recruited through HarperCollins' own site and job listing page. The summer program runs in New York, where interns support HarperCollins Publishers, and in Nashville, where they support HarperCollins Christian Publishing and HarperCollins Focus. HarperCollins also offers a paid spring internship with locations that vary by role. Typical roles are editorial, marketing, publicity, sales, finance and systems or IT, and summer interns join a weekly speaker series and present a group publishing project to senior leadership. HarperCollins publishes no class size or conversion rate. Its Toronto contract internships are separate and outside this guide.

When Do HarperCollins Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

HarperCollins recruits for both its spring and summer internships in the fall, in a single short window. For the 2027 class, its internship page lists a virtual information session and applications going live on September 18, 2026, with a deadline of October 1, 2026 at 11:59pm ET. That's about 8.6 months before the June 7 start, and the deadline falls about 8.2 months before it. We have only one dated cycle on HarperCollins' own pages, and a 2025 capture of the same page has no dated timeline, so we can't measure drift. We expect the summer 2028 window in mid to late September 2027, closing around early October, and we say so with low confidence.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

The 2027 window is closed. HarperCollins' internship page lists the deadline as October 1, 2026, and its FAQ says you can't apply after the deadline. Four 2027 postings still sit on the job listing page (posted October 12), but we couldn't verify they accept applications and the page says the window has passed. Interviews for the 2027 class are happening now.

Use the year to build proof for the 2028 window: the Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights Externship or the SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games Externship gives you a finished marketing or data project to describe in a cover letter.
Winter 2026 to summer 2027

Prepare. HarperCollins looks for enthusiasm for the publishing industry, school activities or roles related to book publishing, and general office experience. Build a clip, a campus book-club or newsletter role, and a master cover letter you can tailor by role.

Mid to late September 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Expected: information session and applications go live for spring and summer 2028 together, if the 2026 pattern repeats. Watch the internship page, which HarperCollins updates when applications open.

Early October 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Expected deadline, about 13 days after opening if the pattern holds. Last year it was 11:59pm ET on October 1. Late submissions and changes after the deadline aren't accepted.

Summer 2028

Expected: 10 weeks from early June to mid-August 2028, in New York or Nashville, 28 hours a week. Applicants in earlier cycles describe interviews from November and decisions between late November and mid-February.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard deadline with a short window, so the work is to finish before the date, not to hurry on day one. HarperCollins' 2027 window ran only 13 days, and its FAQ says you can't apply after the deadline or change materials once it closes. A cover letter is mandatory: candidates who don't submit one won't be considered. You can apply to up to two roles per calendar year, each with its own tailored cover letter, which takes time. Block a week in September 2027 and have the letters drafted before the page updates.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

These come from HarperCollins' internship page and the four 2027 postings, read on October 26, 2026.

• Class standing: available to work full time in 2027 or 2028; open to rising seniors, recent graduates, master's students or entry-level candidates with up to 1 year of work experience. Freshmen and sophomores aren't the target for the summer 2027 postings.

• Work authorization: applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

• Cover letter: required for every application. Candidates who don't submit one won't be considered. Address it to "Hiring Team" and put the role title in the file name.

• Limit: up to two internship roles per calendar year.

Do You Need Publishing Experience?

Not in the sense of a prior internship. If you are a current sophomore, you would be a rising senior in the summer 2028 window, so the next cycle is yours. HarperCollins says it looks for enthusiasm for the industry, engagement in school activities or roles related to book publishing, experience in general administrative or office tasks, and a passion for books. It also advises researching the imprints and areas each role supports and naming books you love in your cover letter.

What Skills Does HarperCollins Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

HarperCollins' four US postings give a thin but consistent picture, and we haven't built a frequency chart from four. Common ground: Microsoft Office, attention to detail, organization and a passion for books. Sales roles add Excel, PowerPoint, Edelweiss (the publisher catalog tool), sales tracking and analysis, and building newsletters. Editorial roles add copyediting, proofreading and style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style. A Summer 2026 strategy intern quoted on the page analyzed new revenue models in the audiobook space, which shows the business side is part of the program.

Note: HarperCollins had only four US internship postings on its board on October 26, 2026, too few for a skills frequency chart. The skills above come from those four postings and the internship page.

What Is the HarperCollins Application and Interview Process Like?

HarperCollins describes a short application and a virtual interview stage.

1. Choose up to two roles. Applications are role specific, and you can apply to two internship roles per calendar year.

2. Apply on the job listing page. Upload your resume in the Resume section and a tailored cover letter in Additional Documents, preferably as PDFs, with the role title in the cover letter file name.

3. Wait for contact. Only candidates selected for interviews are contacted.

4. Interview virtually. Expect behavior-based interviews where you can ask questions about the role.

5. Decision. HarperCollins doesn't publish dates. Applicants describe offers from late November to mid-February.

HarperCollins publishes no interview questions or acceptance rate.

What Students on Reddit Say

Applicants mostly talk about how long the wait is and what the portal shows. These are lightly paraphrased from threads we read in full.

Applicants in 2025 watched the 'last updated' date on their iCIMS dashboard as a rough sign that someone had opened the application. One said they applied in early November the year before, interviewed in late December and heard the final decision in mid-February.

Timing varies by department. One applicant was told by talent management to expect decisions in mid-December, while another said their role had no second round and offers would go out at the end of November.

For the 2027 class, applicants for editorial, subrights, systems analyst and children's design roles said that about ten days after the deadline they hadn't heard anything. Spring and summer applications had opened and closed together, and one expected no word before November.

How Do You Stand Out for a HarperCollins Internship?

First, treat the cover letter as the application, since HarperCollins won't consider candidates without one. Tailor it to the role and the imprint, address it to the Hiring Team, and name specific HarperCollins books you love, as the page suggests. Second, show publishing engagement: a campus literary magazine, a book-club newsletter, a bookstore or a social account about books counts under what HarperCollins says it looks for. Third, choose your two roles by imprint and department, because the postings are role specific. HarperCollins doesn't publish an applicant count, class size or conversion rate, so there is no figure to benchmark against.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 HarperCollins internship?

No. The summer 2026 program has run, and the 2027 window has closed too: applications opened September 18 and closed October 1, 2026 at 11:59pm ET. HarperCollins says you can't apply after the deadline. The next window to plan for is for summer 2028, expected from mid to late September 2027.

When do HarperCollins internship applications open?

In the fall, for both spring and summer. For the 2027 class, applications went live September 18, 2026 and closed October 1. We expect the next window in mid to late September 2027, with low confidence, since HarperCollins' pages show only one dated cycle and say the website is updated when applications go live.

Are HarperCollins internships paid?

Yes. HarperCollins calls the summer program a paid 10-week internship, and all four US postings we read list $18 an hour. Summer interns work 28 hours a week, Monday to Thursday, about $504 a week before taxes. HarperCollins doesn't provide housing, so interns arrange their own.

Who is eligible for a HarperCollins internship?

The 2027 postings are open to rising seniors, recent graduates, master's students and entry-level candidates with up to one year of experience, available to work full time in 2027 or 2028. You need US work authorization and a cover letter. GPA isn't stated. Freshmen and sophomores aren't the target.

Is a cover letter required for a HarperCollins internship?

Yes. HarperCollins says candidates who don't submit a cover letter won't be considered. Tailor it to each role, address it to the Hiring Team, upload it in Additional Documents as a PDF with the role title in the file name, and write a separate one if you apply to a second role.

How many HarperCollins internships can I apply to?

Up to two internship roles per calendar year. Applications are role specific, so each needs its own tailored cover letter. HarperCollins suggests researching the imprints and areas each role supports and applying to the internship that resonates most, because the postings differ by department.

Where are HarperCollins internships located?

Summer internships are based at the headquarters in New York City or Nashville. New York supports HarperCollins Publishers, while Nashville supports HarperCollins Christian Publishing and HarperCollins Focus. Spring locations vary by role, and the 2027 spring posting was remote US. Toronto contract internships are separate and outside this guide.

What is the HarperCollins internship interview process?

Only candidates selected for interviews are contacted. HarperCollins describes virtual, behavior-based interviews where you can ask about the role. It publishes no questions or timing. Applicants describe offers between late November and mid-February, depending on department, and some roles had no second round.

The 2027 window has closed, so use the year to prepare for the September 2027 window. A remote Externship gives your cover letter a finished marketing or data project to describe.
