Teach For America doesn't run a summer internship, and searching for one will cost you a deadline. Its core program, the corps, is a two-year, full-time teaching job: corps members are employees of, and paid by, partner school districts and charter networks, and first-year TFA teachers earn $32,000 to $72,000 per school year depending on the region. On 3 October 2026, TFA's own staff job board listed 20 openings and no internships.

What students can apply for runs on hard dates. Seniors and recent graduates apply to the 2027 corps: the first deadline passed on 11 September 2026, the next is 26 October 2026, and two more follow on 1 February and 8 March 2027. In plain words: you apply during your senior year (2026–27), train in May or June 2027 and start teaching in August or September 2027, and it's a job, not an internship. Current students can join the paid, virtual Ignite Fellowship; spring 2027 applications are due 18 November 2026.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real organization, and they're a useful way to build evidence of leadership before a TFA interview. The Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships & Earned Revenue Externship puts you inside an education nonprofit's work, and the ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics Externship builds data skills around children's outcomes.

What Is a Teach For America Internship?

There's no Teach For America internship. TFA is a national nonprofit and AmeriCorps member program that recruits college graduates into two-year teaching jobs in 40+ placement communities, where they teach full time and are paid as beginning teachers by the school or district.

The closest thing to an internship for a current student is the Ignite Fellowship: you tutor a small group of two or three K-12 students online, 3 to 5 hours a week for a 14-week term, and receive a financial award at the end. TFA says Ignite will reach 7,000 students across 43 communities this school year. A third student role, Campus Ambassador, is a recruiting job TFA names in its FAQ but doesn't describe on its website. A semester in any of these makes a junior eligible to apply early for the 2028 corps.

When Do Teach For America Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

TFA doesn't open and close once. The 2027 corps opened in August 2026 with four published deadlines, each with its own interview week and decision date, so a senior chooses a deadline rather than racing a window. Applying earlier leaves more time to prepare for certification, relocation and training, which starts in May or June 2027.

Ignite runs two short-lead cohorts a year. Last cycle the spring 2026 cohort opened on 20 August 2025 and closed on 19 November 2025, and the fall 2026 cohort ran from 28 January to 29 April 2026. This cycle's spring 2027 deadline is 18 November 2026.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Two doors are open right now. Seniors and graduates can apply to the 2027 corps by 26 October 2026; current students can apply to Ignite's spring 2027 cohort by 18 November 2026. The first corps deadline, 11 September 2026, has passed. There is no internship to apply to.

If you're a sophomore or junior, pair Ignite with a project you can talk about in an interview. The Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships Externship or the TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship builds the outreach skills a Campus Ambassador uses.

2027 corps Second Deadline. Interview invitations come on 2 November, interviews run 9 to 12 November, decisions with a region and subject placement arrive on 8 December, and you have until 14 December to accept.

2027 corps Third Deadline on 1 February 2027 and Critical Needs Deadline on 8 March 2027, both published. Ignite's fall 2027 applications are expected to open around late January and close around late April 2027, based on last year's dates.

May to September 2027

Summer training for the 2027 corps begins in May or June 2027 and is unpaid; teaching starts in August or September 2027. Juniors who completed Ignite, Breakthrough or a Campus Ambassador semester can apply early to the 2028 corps.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

TFA's dates are hard deadlines, and each one has its own interview week and decision date. Miss 26 October and the next chance for the 2027 corps is 1 February 2027, with decisions in March instead of December.

One rule cuts the other way. TFA's FAQ says that if you apply for the 2027 corps and aren't admitted, you can't reapply at a later deadline in the same 2026–27 season; you'd wait until August 2027. So the goal isn't to submit in week one at any cost. It's to submit your strongest application by the earliest deadline you can genuinely be ready for, and 26 October is close enough that you should decide this week.

Which Teach For America Internship Programs Should You Target?

Since TFA has no internship, this table lists the four things a student can actually apply for.

Deadlines and requirements are on TFA's application process page and corps FAQ.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The corps rules come from school district hiring requirements, so TFA can't bend them:

• Degree: a bachelor's from an accredited college or university by the first day of summer training. All majors are welcome.

• GPA: a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.50, both when you apply and at graduation.

• Work authorization: US citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, or an Employment Authorization Document in a category that doesn't need employer sponsorship. People in the US on student, exchange, work or tourist visas can't apply.

• Ignite: current undergrads or grad students with at least a 2.5 GPA (3.0 high school GPA for college freshmen), available up to 5 hours a week during K-12 school hours, authorized to work in the US and 18 or older.

• Early admission: juniors graduating between 1 July 2027 and 30 June 2028 with a 2.5 GPA who've completed a semester of Ignite or Breakthrough Collaborative, or served a semester as a Campus Ambassador.

Is the 2.50 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

Yes. TFA says the 2.50 minimum is mandated by its partner districts and credentialing programs and that it has no way around it; admitted candidates whose final GPA drops below 2.50 lose their place. The one exception is a waiver for applicants with a completed graduate degree at a 3.50 GPA or higher. Graduate grades can't be averaged into your undergraduate GPA.

What Skills Does Teach For America Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

TFA doesn't post internship job descriptions, so there's no requisition set to count here. What it publishes instead is a list of what selectors look for: evidence that you believe in the potential of all kids, set ambitious goals and follow through, take initiative and learn quickly, work effectively across lines of difference, welcome feedback, and want to serve and lead alongside communities. Ignite's list adds a deep belief in kids and families facing systemic barriers and effective collaboration. The interview tests all of it through a five-minute sample lesson and a short case study prepared in advance.

Note: There's no skills chart on this page: Teach For America posts no internship requisitions (0 of 20 openings on its staff board on 3 October 2026), so there's no job-description set to count. The criteria above are taken from TFA's application process and Ignite pages, read 3 October 2026.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each criterion below comes from TFA's own pages, paired with a remote Externship that gives you a concrete example to bring to the interview.

TFA's interview asks for specific moments when you led, set a goal or changed course after feedback. A finished project gives you one.

What Is the Teach For America Application and Interview Process Like?

This is the 2027 corps process as TFA describes it:

1. Check eligibility and apply online. Share your education and work history, answer two short-response questions (why TFA, and a leadership experience), rank up to three placement communities and upload a resume and transcript.

2. Interview invitation. About a week after your deadline you learn whether you're invited.

3. 90-minute virtual interview. Prepare a five-minute sample lesson, a response to a short case study sent in advance, and examples of how you lead and learn.

4. Recommenders. Give contact details for two people who know your work and leadership.

5. Decision and placement. The admissions decision comes with a region, subject and grade placement, and you get about a week to accept (for the 26 October deadline: decision 8 December, respond by 14 December).

Ignite has its own shorter application through the same applicant center; decisions for last year's spring cohort came about four weeks after the deadline.

What Students on Reddit Say

The TFA subreddit is mostly corps members and fellows, and three threads answer the questions students ask most.

Ignite fellows said they received the full $1,200 a semester as long as they showed up or explained absences, and one could pick up a second tutoring session for another full award. One fellow noted taxes brought it to about $1,050. These are 2024 accounts; TFA now publishes $800 to $1,400 depending on term.

A Campus Ambassador described the role as networking for TFA: meeting prospective applicants over Zoom, brainstorming recruiting events and reminding people of deadlines, at about five hours in the busiest week.

Corps members described summer training as roughly three weeks of online sessions starting in May, then three to four weeks in person teaching mornings and training afternoons. They stressed it varies by region and that housing and transport are mostly your responsibility.

How Do You Stand Out in a Teach For America Application?

Three moves.

First, choose your deadline honestly. Because a declined 2027 applicant can't reapply until August 2027, a rushed submission for 26 October can cost you the whole season. If your short responses and recommenders are ready, apply now; if not, aim for 1 February.

Second, rehearse the sample lesson. Five minutes is short: one objective, one check for understanding, one moment where students do the thinking. Practice it on a friend and time it.

Third, if you're a sophomore or junior, do a semester of Ignite. It's paid, it's virtual, it gives you real tutoring stories for the interview, and it unlocks early admission to the 2028 corps. TFA doesn't publish an acceptance rate or corps size, so ignore third-party figures.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Teach For America internship?

No, and TFA doesn't run a summer internship at all. What's open now: the 2027 corps for seniors and graduates, with the next deadline on 26 October 2026 (the 11 September deadline has passed), and the Ignite Fellowship for current students, with spring 2027 applications due 18 November 2026.

Does Teach For America offer internships?

No. The corps is a two-year, full-time teaching job paid by partner school districts, and TFA's staff board showed 20 openings and no internships on 3 October 2026. The student option is the paid, virtual Ignite tutoring fellowship, plus a Campus Ambassador recruiting role.

When is the next Teach For America application deadline?

For the 2027 corps, the next deadline is 26 October 2026, with interviews on 9 to 12 November and decisions on 8 December. After that come 1 February 2027 and the Critical Needs deadline on 8 March 2027. Training starts in May or June 2027.

What is the Teach For America Ignite Fellowship?

A paid, part-time, virtual tutoring role for college students. Fellows tutor two or three K-12 students for 3 to 5 hours a week over a 14-week term and earn $800 to $1,200 in the fall or $1,000 to $1,400 in the spring. Spring 2027 applications close 18 November 2026.

Can juniors apply to Teach For America?

Yes, through early admission to the 2028 corps. You need a graduation date between 1 July 2027 and 30 June 2028, a GPA of at least 2.5, eligible work authorization, and a completed semester of Ignite or Breakthrough Collaborative, or a semester as a Campus Ambassador.

How much do Teach For America corps members make?

Corps members are paid by their district or charter network, between $32,000 and $72,000 a year depending on region. TFA adds a $3,000 to $6,500 stipend and need-based grants. An AmeriCorps education award of up to $7,395 a year may apply, but TFA says it can't guarantee it.

What GPA do I need for Teach For America?

A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.50, both when you apply and at graduation. TFA says partner districts mandate it, and admitted candidates who fall below 2.50 lose their place. Applicants with a completed graduate degree at 3.50 or higher can request a waiver.

Is Teach For America summer training paid?

No. Summer training, which starts in May or June, is unpaid. TFA's baseline stipend of $3,000 to $6,500, paid automatically before training, is meant to cover living costs until your first teaching paycheck, which usually arrives between mid-August and late September.

TFA's next corps deadline is 26 October and Ignite closes 18 November. If you're not applying this season, build your evidence now: a remote Externship gives you a finished project and a leadership story for the interview.
