Special Olympics International, the Washington, DC headquarters of the global sports movement for people with intellectual disabilities, hires interns one role at a time rather than as a summer class. One is open right now (3 October 2026): an Intern, Sport Data & Analytics role posted on 28 September, remote or in DC, paying $18.40 an hour or university course credit, with start and end dates set around your academic calendar.

That's the pattern to plan around. The last two US roles before it were a paid Chairman's Office internship posted in January 2026 and an unpaid, for-credit Health Professions internship in July 2026. There's no summer-2027 program to wait for: if you want a Special Olympics internship in 2027, watch the board and apply in the first week a role appears.

Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern. Most run 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week, which fits around a part-time nonprofit internship or the wait for the next posting. The Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy Externship builds the Excel and analysis skills the Sport Data & Analytics role asks for, and the Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships & Earned Revenue Externship is mission-driven partnership work at a nonprofit. What Is a Special Olympics Internship?

A Special Olympics internship is a part-time or short-term placement in a department of Special Olympics International, the movement's headquarters in Washington, DC. Founded in 1968, Special Olympics says it serves nearly four million athletes and Unified Sports partners and one million coaches and volunteers in more than 170 countries.

The internship page says internships are "often available across many departments in our headquarters office and regional offices." In practice that means individual roles: the live Sport Data & Analytics intern supports sport data analysis, literature reviews and program surveys; the 2026 Health Professions intern worked on inclusive health education and program evaluation; and the Chairman's Office intern handled stakeholder outreach and correspondence. State Programs, such as Special Olympics North Carolina, are separate organizations with their own internships.

When Do Special Olympics Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Special Olympics International doesn't run a recruiting season. We checked its Internship & Fellowship board through the board's own search API on 3 October 2026: one internship is live, Sport Data & Analytics, posted 28 September, and the main jobs board has no intern roles. The role states no deadline.

Past postings show how short the lead can be. The Chairman's Office internship was posted around 8 January 2026 for a start the week of 19 January, about 11 days later, while the Health Professions internship in July set its schedule with each student's university. A summer-2027 wave is possible but undocumented, so treat any spring date as a low-confidence estimate.

Check the Internship & Fellowship board weekly. Last winter's Chairman's Office internship posted in early January for a mid-January start.

Expected spring 2027EXPECTED

Departments may post internships for summer 2027, one at a time. This is a low-confidence estimate: Special Olympics hasn't published a summer intake.

Summer 2027

Any summer placements run by department, with dates and hours agreed with each intern, often around the university calendar and sometimes for credit.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Special Olympics' roles are rolling and ad hoc, and that cuts both ways. There's no deadline to miss on the live posting, but there's also no guarantee it stays up: the board shows one role at a time, and when the department finds its intern, the role is gone.

The January 2026 Chairman's Office posting is the clearest evidence. It went up about 11 days before the start date. A student who checked the board monthly would have missed it entirely, so a weekly check and a ready resume matter more here than at employers with fixed windows.

Which Special Olympics Internship Programs Should You Target?

There's no program menu. These are the US intern roles Special Olympics International posted in 2026:

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Requirements are set per role. Across the three 2026 postings:

• Enrollment: all three required current university enrollment; the live role takes bachelor's or master's students in data analytics, statistics, data science, public health, sports management, information systems or related fields.

• Location: the live role is remote or DC-based; the Chairman's Office role wanted a current DC-based student.

• Tools: Microsoft Excel and Power BI for the data role, with SQL, R or Python preferred; Microsoft Office for all three.

• Work authorization: Special Olympics is an E-Verify employer. No posting mentions visa sponsorship.

• GPA: not stated on any posting.

Do You Need Experience With Special Olympics?

It isn't required, but every 2026 posting asked for interest in the mission. The Chairman's Office role listed prior experience with Special Olympics or a passion for working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as desired; the Health role wanted interest in disability-inclusive health.

The cheapest proof is volunteering at a local Special Olympics event or with your state Program before you apply.

What Skills Does Special Olympics Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Special Olympics International posted three US internships in 2026, and we read all three in full: the live Sport Data & Analytics posting, and the Health Professions and Chairman's Office postings through job-board copies of their original text.

The common core is clear even in a small sample. All three ask for written and verbal communication, Microsoft Office, organization against deadlines, working both independently and in a team, and interest in the mission. Two of three want research or data work, and two stress confidentiality.

What Is the Special Olympics Application and Interview Process Like?

The process is short and posting-specific:

1. Find the role. Open the Internship & Fellowship board from Special Olympics' internship page; it's separate from the main jobs board.

2. Apply through the posting. Applications go through Special Olympics' UKG careers system. Read the pay line carefully, since some roles are hourly and some are for credit.

3. Arrange credit if needed. Credit-based roles coordinate the schedule with your university, so check your school's internship-credit rules first.

4. Interview and start. Special Olympics doesn't publish its interview steps. Expect a quick turnaround: one 2026 role went from posting to start in about 11 days.

What the Community Says

Reddit has no threads about interning at Special Olympics, so these cards draw on Glassdoor intern reviews. Note that Glassdoor mixes headquarters with state Programs.

Special Olympics' intern reviews on Glassdoor average 5.0 out of 5 across five reviews, and every reviewer would recommend it. The small count covers both headquarters and state Programs, so read it as a positive signal rather than a rating of one office.

Glassdoor intern reviews, paraphrased

A headquarters intern wrote that the organization was very good at keeping employees' interests at heart, and a 2023 reviewer described a friendly office and a good environment to work in.

Glassdoor intern reviews, paraphrased

An intern at a Virginia state Program described a welcoming, family-like atmosphere and said working with the athletes was the most fun part, a reminder that state Program internships are often closer to events and athletes than headquarters roles.

How Do You Stand Out for a Special Olympics Internship?

Three moves.

Check the board weekly, not monthly. With roles posted one at a time and starts as soon as two weeks out, timing is half the battle. Keep a tailored resume ready.

Show the mission, not just the skills. Every 2026 posting asked for interest in the mission, and two named disability inclusion directly. A season volunteering at local Special Olympics events gives you something specific to talk about.

Line up funding or credit for unpaid roles. Some Special Olympics internships are for credit only. One past headquarters legal intern came through a university summer public-service fellowship, so ask your career office about stipends for unpaid nonprofit work. Special Olympics doesn't publish applicant numbers or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Special Olympics internship?

No. Summer 2026 has passed, and Special Olympics International doesn't run a fixed summer class. One internship is open now, though: Intern, Sport Data & Analytics, posted 28 September 2026, remote or in Washington, DC, paying $18.40 an hour or course credit, with flexible dates.

Does Special Olympics have a summer internship program?

Not as a cohort. Special Olympics International posts individual internships by department on its Internship & Fellowship board, whenever a team needs help. Three US roles appeared in 2026, in January, July and September. Summer-2027 roles may post around spring 2027, but that's an estimate.

Are Special Olympics internships paid?

It depends on the role. The live Sport Data & Analytics internship pays $18.40 an hour or university course credit. A January 2026 Chairman's Office internship paid $18 an hour, while a July 2026 Health Professions internship was unpaid and earned school credit. Check the pay line on each posting.

Can I do a Special Olympics internship remotely?

Sometimes. The live Sport Data & Analytics role is remote or in person at the Washington, DC headquarters, and the 2026 Health Professions role also allowed remote work. The Chairman's Office internship required a DC-based student. Each posting states its own location.

Where is Special Olympics International located?

Its headquarters is at 2600 Virginia Avenue NW in Washington, DC. Special Olympics also has regional offices, and its state and national Programs, such as Special Olympics North Carolina, are separate organizations that recruit their own interns on their own sites.

What skills does Special Olympics look for in interns?

Across its three 2026 postings: written and verbal communication, Microsoft Office, organization against deadlines, working independently and in teams, and interest in the mission. The data role adds Excel and Power BI, with SQL, R or Python preferred. Two roles also stressed confidentiality.

Can I intern with my state's Special Olympics Program instead?

Yes, but it's a separate application to a separate organization. Special Olympics North Carolina, for example, recruits interns for various departments, mostly virtual work at 10 to 24 hours a week, strictly on a volunteer basis. Check your own state Program's website for openings.

How fast does Special Olympics hire interns?

Fast, when a role opens. The January 2026 Chairman's Office internship was posted around 8 January for a start the week of 19 January, about 11 days later. Postings don't state deadlines, so check the Internship & Fellowship board weekly and apply as soon as a matching role appears.

One Special Olympics internship is open now, and the next could post any week. Apply, then keep building: a remote Externship gives you a finished data or partnerships project for the next role.
