Duolingo Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Pay & How to Apply

Last updated: July 2026

Duolingo crossed $1 billion in annual revenue in 2025, its owl mascot has become one of the most recognizable brands on the internet, and its engineering team ships features to 50 million daily active users. For the 2027–2028 cycle, internship applications are expected to open in September 2026, roughly 9 months before the June start.

But here's what most applicants don't realize: Duolingo runs two separate internship tracks. The Standard program hires juniors at $50–$52 per hour, and the Thrive program recruits sophomores from underrepresented communities at $43–$45 per hour with a dedicated mentorship structure built around group projects, senior hosts, and a two-week onboarding called Hootcamp. That dual-track design means there are two application windows to hit, not one.

What Is a Duolingo Internship?

A Duolingo internship is a paid, 10-to-12-week summer placement at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters, where interns ship features to an app used by more than 50 million people every day. The program splits into two tracks: a Standard track hiring juniors for Software Engineering, Data Science, and Associate Product Manager roles at $50–$52 per hour, and a Thrive track hiring sophomores from underrepresented communities for SWE, Product Design, and Studio Art roles at $43–$45 per hour. Both tracks include a $1,000 monthly housing stipend, daily catered meals, relocation support, and access to Duolingo's employee resource groups. With $1.038 billion in FY2025 revenue, rapid expansion into Math, Music, and Chess, and a proprietary AI system called Birdbrain driving lesson personalization, Duolingo offers the scale of a public tech company alongside the creative energy of a team that still puts its owl mascot in memes.

When Do Duolingo Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Duolingo's hiring calendar is tight but predictable. Based on the Summer 2026 cycle, Standard SWE applications opened in early September and the Data Science and APM deadlines landed on October 1. Thrive SWE closed on September 29, and Product Design and Studio Art Thrive postings appeared in early November. For the Summer 2027 cycle, expect a similar window: September through November 2026.

And here's the critical part: these aren't rolling, so missing a deadline means waiting a full year.

Now · Summer 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applications for summer 2027 don't exist yet. This is the skill-building window: what you ship and learn before September determines whether your application clears the OA.

The Wayfair AI Agent Engineering Externship and the Beats by Dre Data Analytics Externship are remote, real-company projects that put Python and data skills on your resume before the window opens.
August 2026

Prepare materials: polish your resume, practice LeetCode-style problems, and finalize any summer projects. Duolingo values candidates who can show genuine product usage, so start using the app critically if you haven't already.

September to October 2026EXPECTED

The summer 2027 window is expected to open here. Standard SWE opens first (early September), followed by Thrive SWE (late September, deadline ~September 29), then APM and Data Science (deadline ~October 1). Apply the day listings go live.

October to November 2026EXPECTED

Interview process: online coding assessment within 1–2 weeks of applying, then a 60-minute technical video interview via CodeSignal, then a multi-session virtual onsite. Thrive Product Design and Studio Art applications open in early November.

Late October to early November 2026EXPECTED

Offers and rejections roll out. Decision window is approximately 2 weeks. Total time from application to offer: 4–6 weeks.

June to August 2027

10–12 weeks as a Duolingo intern in Pittsburgh. Perform well: 76% of Thrive interns convert to full-time, and the majority of standard interns receive return offers.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Duolingo doesn't use rolling admissions the way some banks do, but the deadlines are firm and the windows are short. The Summer 2026 Thrive SWE deadline was September 29. The APM and Data Science deadlines were October 1. That's a 2-day gap between tracks, and both closed just weeks after opening.

So if you're targeting multiple roles, you need everything ready before the first listing drops.

And because the OA arrives within 1–2 weeks of submission, there's no time to start studying after you apply. Your prep needs to be done before September.

Which Duolingo Internship Programs Should You Target?

Duolingo runs six intern roles across two programs. The Standard track targets juniors, and the Thrive track is designed exclusively for sophomores from underrepresented communities in tech. Which one you're eligible for depends on your graduation year and background.

See all current openings on the careers page. All roles require relocation to Pittsburgh except Data Science, which is also available in New York.

Yet even at the lower Thrive rate, total compensation with the housing stipend, daily meals, and 401(k) matching puts Duolingo above most mid-size tech internships.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Requirements differ by track:

Standard track: rising senior (junior graduating Fall 2026 through Spring 2027). CS or related major preferred for SWE and Data Science. Any background considered for APM.

Thrive track: rising junior (sophomore graduating Fall 2027 through Spring 2028) from a historically underrepresented community in tech. Must be pursuing CS or a related field for SWE; design or art background for Design and Studio Art roles.

GPA: no stated minimum, but technical coursework, project experience, and relevant skills carry weight.

Location: all interns must relocate to Pittsburgh, PA for the summer. Company provides relocation assistance and a $1,000/month housing stipend.

Availability: full 10–12-week commitment, June through August.

What Counts as 'Underrepresented' for Thrive?

Duolingo defines eligibility for the Thrive track as students from historically underrepresented communities in tech. The program launched in 2021 and has grown to roughly 25 interns per summer. It isn't limited to a specific list of identities; the application asks about your background and how it connects to the program's mission of expanding access.

But if you're unsure whether you qualify, Duolingo's guidance is clear: apply anyway and let the team assess fit.

What Skills Does Duolingo Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Sixteen sources (job descriptions, engineering blog posts, interview guides, and recruiter tips) tell a consistent story about what Duolingo looks for. Python leads with 14 mentions across backend, interview, and eligibility contexts. Kotlin follows at 12, reflecting Duolingo's full migration of its Android app to Kotlin and its growing use of Kotlin Multiplatform for cross-platform code.

But the soft-skill signal is just as strong: data-driven decision making hits 8 mentions and A/B testing shows up 7 times, because Duolingo obsessively experiments on everything from lesson flows to the owl's facial expressions. What does that pattern reveal? Duolingo doesn't just want engineers who can code. They want engineers who can measure the impact of what they build.

How Is Demand for SWE Interns Moving Right Now?

SWE intern hiring right now: July 2026

Across US software-engineer-intern postings tracked this week · aggregate market data, all employers

=
SWE intern postings are holding steady through early July as summer 2027 hiring hasn't opened yet for most companies
AI/ML skills carry a premium: intern postings mentioning AI or machine learning advertise 15–20% higher hourly rates than general SWE intern roles
The conversion pipeline is strong: US entry-level software-engineer postings continue to grow, with a $95k–$115k median advertised salary

July 2026 is this tracker's baseline month for SWE intern demand. Duolingo's September window means the prep window is now, not when listings drop.

Method: aggregate analysis of US SWE-intern postings via market trackers, July 2026 baseline. Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Every top skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project before the window opens.

How tight is the overlap? The Wayfair deliverable is an AI agent engineering project using Python, the same language that leads Duolingo's skill chart at 14 mentions.

And the Beats by Dre project produces data analytics work that maps directly to the experimentation culture Duolingo interviews for. Both end on a real-company artifact, which is exactly what behavioral interviews reward over anecdotes.

What Is the Duolingo Application and Interview Process Like?

Duolingo runs a three-stage funnel for SWE interns (the most common track) and a slightly different path for APM:

1. Apply through careers.duolingo.com with your resume and any required materials. Standard and Thrive postings are separate, so apply to both if you're eligible for Thrive. Don't wait for all roles to post; SWE Standard opens first in early September.

2. Online Coding Assessment (60 minutes) arrives within 1–2 weeks. It's asynchronous, auto-graded on accuracy and efficiency, and covers algorithmic problems. Languages supported: Python, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Swift.

3. Technical Video Interview (60 minutes) via CodeSignal with a Duolingo engineer. Two engineers are present (one interviewing, one shadowing). This is live coding, so think aloud and explain your approach as you go.

4. Virtual Onsite (multiple sessions): Pair Programming (75 min, collaborative and production-like), Code Review (60 min, reading and improving existing code), Whiteboard (60 min, algorithmic reasoning), Design Interview (60 min, system architecture for backend/mobile/web roles), and a Coffee Chat (informal culture fit). Not all candidates receive every session.

For APM interns, the process replaces coding rounds with a take-home assignment (propose a feature with MVP, metrics, and go-to-market strategy over 3–7 days) followed by two 45-minute interviews covering product sense and leadership. Total timeline from application to offer is 4–6 weeks across both tracks. Still, you should budget for overlap: some candidates report the OA and interview stages compressing into 3 weeks.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three community threads show what the Duolingo intern experience looks like from the inside.

The Thrive program is genuinely different from a typical internship. You get your own project, a dedicated mentor, and the cohort is small enough that you actually know everyone.

Duolingo's OA was standard LeetCode medium. The onsite pair programming round was the hardest part because they want to see how you collaborate, not just solve.

Pittsburgh surprised me. The office is incredible, free food every day, and the team actually cares about the mission. Pay is lower than FAANG but the culture more than makes up for it.

How Do You Stand Out When Deadlines Land in September?

Three moves, all executable before the window opens. First, show genuine Duolingo usage. Can you articulate what works and what doesn't in the app's gamification mechanics? Interviewers notice when candidates have real opinions about the product versus surface-level praise. Second, build evidence in the JD's language: Python, data-driven thinking, and A/B testing are the top skill clusters, and a finished project using any of them gives your behavioral answers an artifact to point at rather than an anecdote. Third, prepare for the OA before you submit, because it arrives within days and covers LeetCode-style algorithmic problems. There's no breathing room between application and assessment, so your technical prep needs to be front-loaded.

FAQ

How much do Duolingo interns make?

Standard interns (SWE, Data Science, APM) earn $50–$52 per hour, which annualizes to roughly $100,000–$104,000. Thrive interns earn $43–$45 per hour. All interns receive a $1,000 monthly housing stipend, daily catered meals, relocation assistance, 2 days PTO, 401(k) matching at 4%, and free Duolingo Plus access.

What is the Duolingo Thrive program?

Thrive is Duolingo's diversity-focused internship track, launched in 2021 for rising juniors (sophomores) from historically underrepresented communities in tech. It runs for 10 weeks and includes three pillars: Hootcamp (2 weeks of interactive training led by employees), group projects led by senior Thrive Hosts, and a mentorship structure with Thrive Buddies. Roughly 25 interns join each summer, and 76% have converted to full-time roles.

When should I apply for the Summer 2027 Duolingo internship?

Based on the Summer 2026 cycle, Standard SWE applications opened in early September and the Thrive SWE deadline was September 29. APM and Data Science deadlines landed on October 1. Expect a similar window for Summer 2027. Prepare your materials by August 2026 so you can apply the day listings go live.

What programming languages does Duolingo use?

Python is the most-cited language across Duolingo's intern JDs and engineering blog, followed by Kotlin (Android and cross-platform via Kotlin Multiplatform), Swift (iOS), Java (legacy backend), and JavaScript/TypeScript (web frontend with React). Scala powers some backend systems including the session generator engine.

What is the Duolingo SWE intern interview like?

Three stages: a 60-minute asynchronous online coding assessment (algorithmic, auto-graded), a 60-minute live technical video interview via CodeSignal with a Duolingo engineer, and a multi-session virtual onsite including Pair Programming (75 min), Code Review (60 min), Whiteboard (60 min), Design Interview (60 min for backend/mobile roles), and a Coffee Chat. Total timeline is 4–6 weeks from application to offer.

Does Duolingo offer return offers to interns?

Yes. RippleMatch Campus Forward Award data puts the conversion rate at 76%, and Duolingo's blog states that "the majority of Thrivers have gone on to become full-time" employees. Standard intern conversion data isn't published separately, but community reports suggest comparable rates.

Do I need to relocate to Pittsburgh for a Duolingo internship?

Yes. All Duolingo internships are based at the Pittsburgh, PA headquarters in the East Liberty neighborhood. The Data Science role can also be located in New York, NY. Duolingo provides a $1,000/month housing stipend and company-arranged relocation and transportation assistance.

Can I apply to both the Standard and Thrive internship tracks?

If you meet the eligibility criteria for Thrive (rising junior from an underrepresented community) and also qualify for a Standard role by graduation timeline, you can apply to both. They are posted as separate listings on the careers page with separate deadlines. Applying to Thrive doesn't affect your Standard application.

The deadlines are fixed and the window is short. Spend the runway building proof: a remote Externship turns 'interested in Python and data' into a finished project that a Duolingo application can point at.
