Quant Internships Summer 2028: When They Open, What's Open Now, and How to Prepare
Last updated: September 7, 2026
TL;DR
• Summer 2028 quant internship postings are projected to go live in July and August 2027. The summer 2027 cycle opened in exactly that window (Jane Street by 12 July 2026, Citadel in early August), ran on rolling review, and had most offers signed by October.
• Programs for 2028 and 2029 graduates are open right now: Citadel Securities Ignite (January 2027, sophomore women graduating Winter 2028 or Spring 2029), Five Rings Winter Intern 2027 (four weeks in January, December 2028 or Spring 2029 grads, $300,000 annualized base plus housing), Optiver FutureFocus (first and second years graduating Winter 2027 to Spring 2029), Explore HRT (2028 grads), SIG Discovery Day, and IMC Launchpad.
• Some sophomores don't have to wait at all. Optiver's summer 2027 Quantitative Intern posting accepts anyone graduating between December 2027 and June 2029 with sophomore standing.
• Published intern pay from the 2027 cycle: HRT $5,800 a week, Optiver a $70,000 to $88,000 base range, IMC a $250,000 stated base rate, Five Rings a $300,000 annual base. Those are four different bases, so read the table before comparing.
• Citadel and Citadel Securities took about 350 interns from more than 115,900 applications for their 2026 class, a 0.36% rate according to Fortune. The rest of this guide is the calendar and a semester-by-semester plan for the year before postings open.
An Externship is a short, remote, project-based program run with a real company, where you build professional experience and finish with work you can actually show an interviewer. If you're a sophomore staring at the summer 2028 cycle with nothing quantitative on your resume yet, these are a reasonable place to start:
• Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship
• HP Tech Ventures Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis Externship
• EIC Energy Transition Venture Capital Market Research Externship
What Counts as a Summer 2028 Quant Internship?
Who the Summer 2028 Cycle Is For
A summer 2028 quant internship is a paid nine to twelve week program at a trading firm, quant fund, or market maker, running roughly June through August 2028. Firms hire these classes mostly from students graduating between December 2028 and spring 2029, which means today's sophomores, plus master's students on a two-year track and some PhD candidates.
Don't take our word for it. Check the postings. Five Rings' summer 2027 Quantitative Trader internship asks for students "graduating in winter of 2027 or spring/summer of 2028." Hudson River Trading labels its summer 2027 internships "For 2028 Grads." Shift both forward a year and that's the summer 2028 audience.
The Four Tracks, in One Paragraph
Quant firms hire interns into four separate lanes: quant trader (pricing and risk decisions, tested on probability and mental math), quant researcher (predictive models on market data, tested on statistics and Python), quant developer (the infrastructure the models run on, tested on production code), and software engineer (trading systems, often C++). Most firms let you apply to one track per season.
So the track decision has to happen before July 2027, not after the posting goes up. Haven't picked? The quant internships summer 2027 guide has the full comparison table.
How This Guide Differs From the 2027 and Career Guides
Three quant pages live on this site, and they do different jobs. The 2027 guide lists the summer 2027 postings that are open right now, firm by firm. The how to become a quant guide covers degrees, coursework, and whether the career suits you at all.
And this page? It's the summer 2028 calendar, the programs open for 2028 and 2029 graduates today, and what to do with the ten months before the real postings appear.

When Will Summer 2028 Quant Internship Applications Open?
What the 2027 Cycle Tells Us
Summer 2028 postings should appear in July and August 2027, because that's precisely when the summer 2027 cycle opened. Jane Street had its summer 2027 quant trader and software engineer postings live by 12 July 2026. IMC, SIG, Optiver, Hudson River Trading, DE Shaw, and Two Sigma opened across July and August. Citadel opened in early August. All of that is documented in Young & Calculated's quant recruiting timeline, which also tracked what happened next: roughly 70% of Citadel's offers were signed by mid-October, Jane Street's interview slots were full by late October, and the portals stayed open into December anyway.
That last detail matters more than the opening date. The posting date is public. The date the class quietly fills? That one isn't, and it's the only one that matters.
The Projected Summer 2028 Calendar
Everything below is projected from the 2027 cycle. Firms shift a few weeks year to year, so treat the months as a planning frame, not a promise.
| Window | What's happening | What you should be doing |
|---|---|---|
| Sep–Dec 2026 | January 2027 winter programs and spring insight programs take applications | Apply to Five Rings Winter, Ignite, INSIGHT, FutureFocus. Sophomores in Optiver's window apply to summer 2027 |
| Jan 2027 | Winter internships and insight weeks run in New York | If you're in one, treat it as a live interview. If not, this is coursework and project time |
| Feb–Apr 2027 | Explore HRT applications open, SIG and IMC discovery days run, first sophomore-only offers | Apply to Explore HRT the week it opens. Finish the one project you'll talk about all year |
| Jul–Aug 2027 | Summer 2028 postings go live | Apply in the first two weeks. One track per firm |
| Aug–Oct 2027 | Online assessments, interviews, first offers | Assume the OA lands within days of applying |
| Nov 2027–Feb 2028 | Remaining offers, some roles reopen | Apply to firms you skipped. Watch the trackers |
| Jun–Aug 2028 | Programs run | Ten to twelve weeks in New York, Chicago, London, or Singapore |
Why "Rolling" Means the Deadline Is Fake
Rolling review means seats are handed out as strong applications arrive, and the portal looks identical whether three seats are left or thirty. By the time a posting closes, the class has usually been full for weeks.
But rushing has a cost too. Optiver's summer 2027 posting states that anyone who "completed an online assessment or interviewed for a quantitative graduate or internship role at any Optiver location in the past 8 months" isn't eligible to reapply until that window passes. Fire off an unprepared application in July 2027 and you may have benched yourself until spring 2028. Early and prepared only conflict if you start late.
Which Quant Programs Are Open Right Now for 2028 and 2029 Graduates?
This is the part most sophomores miss. Firms don't wait until July 2027 to start looking at the summer 2028 class. They run winter internships, discovery days, and insight weeks aimed squarely at first and second years.
And several of those are taking applications this fall.
Winter Internships in January 2027
Three January programs are built for the class of 2028 and 2029.
Five Rings Winter Intern 2027, Quantitative Trader. A four-week program in New York running from the beginning to the end of January 2027, for students "graduating in December 2028 or Spring 2029." The posting describes hands-on projects, classroom instruction, in-house strategy games, and mock trading, with corporate housing included. The pay line reads as a "full-time salary of $300,000," which is an annualized basis, not a January paycheck. See the Five Rings internship guide for the interview format.
Citadel Securities Ignite Women's Trading Program. An invite-only, weeklong January program in New York for sophomore women "graduating in Winter 2028 or Spring 2029," per the program page. Participants shadow traders and run their own trading simulations. eFinancialCareers reported an earlier edition had about 25 places, with flights, accommodation, and daily expenses covered. No internship guarantee.
But it puts you in front of the desk a year early, and the Citadel internship guide covers what that desk looks for.
Jane Street INSIGHT NYC. Runs January 4 to 9, 2027, for self-identifying women, transgender, and gender-expansive students, with three tracks: trading and research, software engineering, and strategy and product. Jane Street covers travel, meals, housing, and a daily expense amount. Jane Street's programs page also lists FTTP for first-years and Bridge for first and second years. The Jane Street internship guide covers how these feed the main internship.
Spring Discovery and Insight Programs
The spring programs are shorter and less formal. Yet several of them explicitly fast-track into summer internships.
| Program | Firm | Who it's for (posted wording) | Format | Firm page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FutureFocus | Optiver | First and second-year students graduating between Winter 2027 and Spring 2029 | Five-day discovery program in Chicago; "excelling in the program could lead to a fast-tracked summer internship offer" | Optiver FutureFocus |
| Explore HRT | Hudson River Trading | "2028 graduates" in math, CS, stats, physics, or related fields | Multi-day spring program in NYC, London, Singapore; online assessment plus a 60-minute technical interview; applications open early 2027 | HRT student opportunities |
| Inside HRT | Hudson River Trading | First and second-year STEM students | Three-day immersive program in NYC each spring | HRT student opportunities |
| Discovery Day | SIG | First-year and second-year students; the 2026 first-year event targeted grads of winter 2027 or spring 2028 | Two-day introductory program: options trading, how trading, tech, and research teams work together | SIG discovery programs |
| Launchpad | IMC | "Ambitious second-year university students" | Two-day discovery program covering software engineering and quant trading, with simulations and coding challenges | IMC student programs |
| FTTP / Bridge | Jane Street | FTTP: first-year students. Bridge: first and second years | Short in-office programs | Jane Street programs |
Our firm guides go deeper on each: Optiver, Hudson River Trading, SIG, and IMC.
One caution, and it's an honest one. These programs shift their graduation windows forward each year, and a few of the 2027 pages hadn't been updated when we checked in September 2026. Read the posted window on the day you apply, not the one in a guide. Including this one.
Sophomores Who Can Apply for Summer 2027 Today
Here is the shortcut nobody tells sophomores. Some summer 2027 postings already include the class of 2029.
Optiver's Quantitative Intern (Summer 2027) posting asks for "expected graduation between December 2027 and June 2029" and "sophomore standing or higher." That's a three-and-a-half-year window. A sophomore graduating in 2029 is inside it. Comfortably.
Not every firm is that open. Five Rings' summer 2027 role is for winter 2027 and spring/summer 2028 grads only, and HRT's summer 2027 internships are labeled for 2028 grads. So check each posting's window before ruling yourself in or out. Eligible and prepared? A summer 2027 internship beats any 2028 plan. Eligible but not prepared? Remember Optiver's eight-month cooldown, and think hard about whether spring 2027 is the better moment.
Either way, one finished piece of analytical work helps. The HP Tech Ventures Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis Externship is the kind of project a sophomore can complete this semester and describe in an interview.

How Much Do Quant Interns Get Paid?
What the 2027 Postings Publish
Quant firms print intern compensation directly on the posting, so you don't have to rely on salary estimators. The summer 2028 figures won't exist until the July 2027 postings, but the summer 2027 numbers are the benchmark they'll be set against.
| Firm | Published figure | Basis | Role and location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hudson River Trading | $5,800 | Weekly base | Algorithm Development and Software Engineering interns, New York |
| Five Rings | $300,000 | Annual base, plus sign-on bonus | Quantitative Trader intern, New York (summer and winter programs) |
| IMC Trading | $250,000 | Stated base rate | Quantitative Research intern (BS/MS), Chicago |
| Optiver | $70,000–$88,000 | Base salary range, plus sign-on | Quantitative Intern, Chicago |
| Citadel / Citadel Securities | $4,300–$5,800 | Weekly base | 2026 intern class, per Fortune |
Read the basis column before you get excited. HRT's number is what actually lands each week. Five Rings and IMC quote annualized rates that get prorated over nine or ten weeks. Optiver quotes a range. Line them up as if they measured the same thing and you'll reach the wrong conclusion.
Every figure above comes from the employer's own posting or from Fortune's June 2026 reporting on Citadel's 2026 class. We deliberately don't use aggregator salary predictions for intern roles. They drift toward general role pay, and they land badly wrong.
The Housing Line Is Real Money
Ten weeks in Manhattan or Chicago isn't cheap. The firms know it.
HRT lists fully-paid housing, travel allowances, chef-prepared breakfast and lunch, and dinner stipends. Five Rings includes corporate housing for both its summer and winter programs. Optiver covers flights, accommodation, and commuting.
And Fortune reported Citadel's 2026 interns received a $15,000 housing stipend on top of weekly pay.
That's not a perk. Over a summer it's a meaningful slice of the package, and it's why the weekly figures hold up across cities.
How Selective Are Quant Internships, Really?
Very, and the published numbers are getting worse each year, not better.
According to Fortune, Citadel and Citadel Securities received more than 115,900 applications for their 2026 intern class and hired roughly 350 people, a 0.36% acceptance rate drawn from 90 colleges. Applications rose 6.4% on the 2025 record, which had been about 108,000 applications for fewer than 300 seats. Around 90% of those interns came from computer science, physics, or statistics backgrounds.
Two months later, Fortune's August 2026 piece narrowed it to Citadel Securities alone: 210 interns from 115,000 applications, or 0.18%. Alex DiLeonardo, the firm's Chief People Officer, wrote that what "increasingly separates the 0.18% who get an offer from everyone else isn't coding ability, or GPA, or which quant competitions they've won." His word for the ones who get through is builders: people who "identify problems no one assigned them to solve, organize people and ideas around solutions, and take responsibility for making things happen."
Jane Street's numbers aren't official. Community estimates compiled by Quantt put it around 250 interns from more than 50,000 applications. Treat that as an order-of-magnitude figure, not a fact.
So here's the implication. Firms run winter programs and discovery days precisely because they want to see students before a 0.36% funnel does the sorting. A sophomore who shows up to Ignite or FutureFocus has been looked at by a human. A July 2027 applicant with no prior contact hasn't.
What Should You Be Doing Each Semester Before July 2027?
Fall 2026 (Now)
1. Apply to the January programs before they close. Five Rings Winter Intern 2027, Citadel Securities Ignite, and Jane Street INSIGHT all run in January 2027, which means their application windows sit in this semester.
2. Register interest in the spring programs. FutureFocus, SIG Discovery Day, IMC Launchpad, Inside HRT. Most collect names now and confirm dates later.
3. If you're a sophomore inside Optiver's window, decide about summer 2027. Apply prepared or don't apply yet. The cooldown is eight months.
4. Start probability at competition depth. Not the course. The problem sets that make trading OAs feel familiar.
5. Take one language to production standard. Python for research and trading tracks, C++ if you're aiming at low-latency work.
At Extern, we've seen the same pattern across finance-track students for years: the ones who can point to one finished analytical project by sophomore spring interview differently from the ones who can't, whatever their GPA.
And the crowd is big. Finance is the second most requested field on our platform, at 19.6% of students asked what they want to explore next (Extern post-program survey, June 2026). The competition for that early proof is real.
Spring 2027
1. Apply to Explore HRT the week it opens. HRT says applications for the 2027 program open early in the year, and it's built specifically for 2028 grads.
2. Do the spring discovery days you registered for.
3. Enter IMC Prosperity. The 2025 edition drew 22,600 players across 12,600 teams from more than 500 universities, with a $25,000 prize for the winning team, according to IMC's announcement. Even a mid-table finish is a project you can talk about.
4. Finish the project. One backtest, one order-book analysis, one dataset you cleaned and modeled yourself. Something you built, understand, and can defend for twenty minutes.
If you'd rather do that inside a structured program with a real company behind it, the Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship walks through investment analysis and modeling over eight weeks at five to ten hours a week.
Summer 2027
1. Prep the online assessment in May and June. Postings go live in July, and the OA usually arrives within days of applying. Interning in July? You won't have time then.
2. Pick your track before the postings appear. One application per firm at HRT and IMC. Optiver decides your track for you, but that's the exception.
3. Apply in the first two weeks of the window. That's when the funnel is widest.
From the employer side, one thing is consistent. After years working across recruitment process outsourcing and career coaching, we've watched reviewers screen quant resumes for evidence of independent quantitative work, not for finance vocabulary. HRT says it outright on its student page: the majority of its people joined with no previous finance experience.

What Do Quant Firms Look For on a Sophomore or Junior Resume?
Evidence That Counts
The myth is that only a prior quant internship counts toward a quant internship. But if that were true, nobody would ever get the first one. What reviewers actually look for is proof that you can do quantitative work without being told how:
• Research assistantships in math, statistics, physics, or economics
• Competition results: Putnam, olympiads, Kaggle, datathons, IMC Prosperity
• Personal projects on real data, especially anything you had to clean, model, and validate yourself
• Coursework in probability, stochastic processes, linear algebra, and machine learning
• Open-source contributions, particularly to numerical or data tooling
And per Citadel Securities' own people chief, initiative: problems you chose to solve, tools (including AI tools) you taught yourself, things you shipped without being asked.
Building Proof Through Project-Based Experience
The gap most sophomores hit isn't ability. It's having nothing concrete to point at yet.
Project-based experience closes that gap faster than another course does. An Externship is a short, remote, project-based program run with a real company. Most run eight weeks (the range is four to eleven) at five to ten hours a week, and you finish with a defined piece of work and a company-endorsed credential. The EIC Energy Transition Venture Capital Market Research Externship puts you on market sizing and company screening for an investor. The HP Tech Ventures and Yinan Zhao programs above cover deal analysis and financial modeling.
Be clear about what this is and isn't. An Externship doesn't replace a quant internship, and nobody should pitch it as one.
Yet for a sophomore with an empty resume, it's defensible analytical work to talk about while the real applications are open.
Building analytical work you can point to takes weeks, not a summer. Explore Externships with companies across finance, data, and venture.
What If Summer 2028 Doesn't Land?
Missing one summer class doesn't close the door, because the quant calendar has more entry points than most students realize.
Winter 2028. Five Rings runs a Winter Intern program every January, and the next one after 2027 would target 2029 and 2030 graduates. A four-week winter internship is a real line on a resume and a real interview loop with the firm.
Software engineering at the same firms. HRT, IMC, Citadel Securities, Optiver, DRW, and Old Mission all post SWE internships beside their quant roles, often with a larger class and a lower probability bar. Plenty of quant traders started as SWE interns.
Sales and trading at banks. Different interview, different skills, same markets. The bank calendar runs almost a year ahead of quant, so the summer 2028 bank cycle opens in late 2026. The investment banking internships 2028 guide has those dates. Students weighing consulting against finance should look at the consulting internships summer 2028 guide too.
Quantitative risk analyst roles. Heavy on statistical modeling, less prestige, much larger hiring pool. They transfer.
Summer 2029. If you're a sophomore now, the 2029 cycle opens in July 2028, and you'll be applying as a junior with a year more math and a full project behind you. That's the normal path. Not the fallback.
Not ready to apply yet? Build the analytical work first. Explore Externships and finish with a project you can actually defend in a quant interview.

Which Firms Should Be on Your Summer 2028 List?
As of September 2026, no firm has posted summer 2028 quant internships. What's live is the summer 2027 class, covered firm by firm in the quant internships summer 2027 guide.
But the firms that ran large summer 2027 classes will almost certainly post summer 2028 roles in July 2027, on the same careers pages. Build your shortlist from them now, and pick a track for each. Two link columns below. Our guide is our own deep-dive on that firm: interview format, past intern projects, timing. Apply goes to the firm's student careers page, which is where the summer 2028 postings will appear.

The tracks column reflects what each firm posted for summer 2027, checked against employer career pages in August 2026. Expect the summer 2028 lineup to look similar, with the graduation windows shifted a year. We also have guides for the rest of the trading cluster: Akuna Capital, Tower Research Capital, Wolverine Trading, and Point72.
We'll update the tracks and links when the summer 2028 roles go live. Until then, the winter and spring programs above are the applications that matter.
FAQs
When do summer 2028 quant internship applications open?
Most summer 2028 quant internship postings should go live in July and August 2027. That's when the summer 2027 cycle opened: Jane Street had postings up by 12 July 2026 and Citadel opened in early August 2026. Firms review on a rolling basis, so the practical deadline is September to October 2027, not the date shown on the portal.
Are any quant internships open right now for 2028 graduates?
Yes. Hudson River Trading's summer 2027 internships are labeled for 2028 graduates, Five Rings' summer 2027 Quantitative Trader role takes winter 2027 and spring 2028 graduates, and Optiver's summer 2027 Quantitative Intern accepts students graduating between December 2027 and June 2029. Explore HRT, a spring 2027 program, is also built for 2028 graduates.
Can sophomores get a quant internship for summer 2027 or 2028?
Yes. Optiver's summer 2027 posting requires only sophomore standing or higher. Five Rings runs a four-week Winter Intern 2027 program for students graduating December 2028 or Spring 2029, and Citadel Securities' Ignite program targets sophomore women graduating Winter 2028 or Spring 2029. Those winter programs are the main sophomore route into summer 2028.
How much do quant interns get paid?
Published figures from summer 2027 postings: Hudson River Trading pays $5,800 a week in New York, Optiver lists a $70,000 to $88,000 base range, IMC lists a $250,000 base rate, and Five Rings lists a $300,000 annual base. Fortune reported Citadel's 2026 interns earned $4,300 to $5,800 weekly plus a $15,000 housing stipend. Annualized figures aren't what a ten-week intern takes home.
How hard is it to get a quant internship?
Very. Fortune reported that Citadel and Citadel Securities accepted about 350 interns from more than 115,900 applications for their 2026 class, a 0.36% rate, and applications rose 6.4% on the previous record. Smaller firms are less extreme but still selective. The early-insight programs exist partly so firms can identify students before that funnel does.
What is the difference between a winter quant internship and a summer one?
Winter internships run two to four weeks in January and are aimed at sophomores, while summer internships run nine to twelve weeks and are the main pipeline to full-time offers. Five Rings' Winter Intern 2027 is four weeks with classroom instruction, strategy games, and mock trading, and it targets December 2028 or Spring 2029 graduates.
Do I need a PhD for a summer 2028 quant internship?
No. Quant trading, quant developer, and most quant research internships are open to undergraduates. IMC, SIG, and Citadel Securities each post separate BS/MS and PhD research internships, and Fortune reported roughly 90% of Citadel's 2026 interns came from computer science, physics, or statistics backgrounds. The PhD requirement applies to specific research tracks only.
