Optiver Internship 2027–2028: The 80-in-8 Test, $175/hr Pay & How to Get In

Last updated: July 2026

Community estimates put Optiver’s acceptance rate at under 1%, and the firm hires only about 100 to 150 interns globally each summer.

And the first filter isn’t your resume. It’s a mental arithmetic test called the 80-in-8: 80 problems, 8 minutes, no calculator, where every wrong answer costs you a point. For the 2027–2028 cycle (you apply during 2027, you intern in summer 2028), applications are expected to open around August 2027, following the pattern of previous years.

But here’s what makes Optiver’s funnel different from any other quant firm: the math test eliminates roughly 80% of candidates before a human ever reviews your application. The payoff for clearing that bar? SWE interns earned $175 per hour in summer 2026, making Optiver one of the highest-paying internships in the world.

What Is an Optiver Internship?

An Optiver internship is a paid, 10-week placement at one of the world’s largest proprietary trading firms, where interns work on live trading systems alongside full-time traders, researchers, and engineers from day one. The firm was founded in Amsterdam in 1986 and now operates across 8 offices on 50+ exchanges worldwide, trading listed derivatives, cash equities, ETFs, bonds, and FX.

So while the intern class of roughly 100 to 150 is small by big-bank standards, the intensity is not. With EUR 3.5 billion in 2024 revenue generated by around 2,100 people, Optiver produces more revenue per employee than nearly any financial firm on earth. Interns are placed into one of five tracks—from quantitative trading to FPGA engineering—and every track includes structured training, a dedicated mentor, and access to the same tools and data as full-time teams.

When Do Optiver Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Optiver’s hiring calendar moves on its own rhythm. Based on the prior cycle, US applications for Summer 2027 opened in August 2026, with online assessments starting within weeks and Super Day invitations flowing through the fall. For the Summer 2028 cycle, expect a similar window opening around August 2027.

Yet the real message from Optiver’s rolling process isn’t about the calendar. It’s about readiness. The 80-in-8 test arrives within days of submission, and you can only retake it once every eight months. Your math speed and probability knowledge need to be competition-ready before you click apply.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Optiver fills on a rolling basis, and the evidence is consistent across every office. The Sydney FAQ states positions close as soon as they’re filled. The EU FAQ confirms rolling review with responses within seven working days.

And because the online assessment drops within days of submission, your clock starts the moment you apply.

So the optimal move isn’t to wait and prepare after applying. It’s to prepare first, then apply on day one of the cycle. Community advice is unanimous on this point: submit in the first two weeks or risk competing for seats that are already claimed.

Which Optiver Internship Programs Should You Target?

Optiver runs five distinct intern tracks, each with its own assessment criteria and team placement. The track you apply to determines which version of the online assessment you receive, so choose based on the skills you can already show rather than the one that sounds most interesting.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Requirements vary slightly by track and office, but the core criteria are consistent:

Degree: currently enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program in a STEM discipline. Computer Science or Computer Engineering for SWE roles.

Year: sophomore standing or above, graduating between December 2027 and June 2029 for the summer 2028 cycle. EU roles target students graduating November 2027 to October 2028.

Work authorization: Optiver provides US immigration sponsorship support. EU visa sponsorship is evaluated case by case during interviews.

Reapply restriction: candidates who interviewed or completed assessments within the past 8 months can’t reapply. Plan your timing carefully.

Availability: full 10-week commitment, late June through early September.

Does Optiver Have a Hard GPA Cutoff?

No official GPA minimum appears on any job description reviewed. Community sources report a 3.5+ expectation, but Optiver’s own language focuses on how you think and the kinds of problems you’re drawn to.

But the practical bar is set by the 80-in-8 and the probability interview, not your transcript. A 4.0 GPA won’t save a candidate who can’t clear 56 on the math test, and a 3.3 GPA won’t stop someone who scores 70+.

What Skills Does Optiver Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Five official Optiver sources—including two open Summer 2027 job descriptions—tell a consistent story. Strong quantitative and analytical reasoning appears in all five. Programming proficiency in Python, C++, or Java appears in four. Probability and statistics knowledge hits four.

But the less obvious signal is equally strong: teamwork and collaboration in fast-paced environments also scores four out of five, and financial markets interest appears in every JD. What does that pattern tell you? Optiver doesn’t just want people who can solve math puzzles. They want people who can solve them while communicating with a team on a live trading floor.

2,340 US SWE-intern postings open this week, holding steady through early July (2,310 on July 6)
Quant and trading-tech firms carry a premium: SWE intern postings at prop trading firms advertise roughly $85/hr vs about $45/hr for general SWE intern roles
The full-time bench runs deep: 47,200 US software-engineer postings are open right now at a $145k median advertised salary

July 2026 is this tracker’s baseline month, so month-over-month shifts appear at the August update. The signal now is that prop trading and quant firms sit at the very top of the SWE intern pay scale.

What Is the Optiver Application and Interview Process Like?

Optiver runs a four-to-five-stage funnel, and the rolling timeline means each stage can start within days of the previous one:

1. Apply through optiver.com/join-us with your resume. All applications go through the careers portal; email submissions aren’t accepted. Candidates applying for quantitative roles may be evaluated for both Quant Trading and Quant Research based on assessment results.

2. Online assessment (5 sections) arrives shortly after submission. The 80-in-8 mental math test leads, followed by probability and logic questions, sequence puzzles, Zap-N cognitive games, and a Zap-Q behavioral questionnaire. This stage eliminates roughly 80% of applicants.

3. Phone or video interview follows 2 to 4 weeks after the assessment. A 45-to-60-minute session covering probability, options pricing concepts, and market scenarios. Expect to think out loud under time pressure.

4. On-site Super Day at an Optiver office. A half or full day with multiple sessions: a harder math test, a trading simulation and market-making game, a technical interview on probability and statistics or coding, and a behavioral interview evaluating collaboration and resilience.

The full process averages about 20 days from application to decision, based on 1,291 Glassdoor data points. One critical constraint: you can only complete Optiver’s assessment once every 8 months. If you don’t pass, you’re locked out for more than half a year. Add optiver.com to your email safe senders list so confirmation messages don’t land in spam.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three community threads show what the process looks like from the inside.

The 80-in-8 seems impossible at first, but it IS passable with daily practice on tradermath.org for about a month. You need 56+ to pass; a competitive score is 65 to 70+.

How Do You Stand Out When Rolling Review Starts in August?

Three moves, all executable before the window opens. First, build your 80-in-8 score to 65+ before you apply; daily practice on tradermath.org or Zetamac for four weeks is the minimum community recommendation, and you only get one shot every eight months. Second, add real project experience to your resume in the JD’s exact skill areas: programming, data analysis, and quantitative reasoning show up in every Optiver posting, and a finished Externship answers behavioral questions with artifacts rather than anecdotes.

And third, prepare for every stage before you submit, because the online assessment arrives within days and the phone interview follows within weeks. There’s no breathing room in a rolling funnel, so your prep needs to be front-loaded.

FAQ

When do Optiver internship applications open?

Applications for Summer 2027 opened in August 2026. The Summer 2028 cycle is expected to follow the same pattern, opening around August 2027. Optiver reviews on a rolling basis and positions close once they’re filled, so submitting in the first two weeks gives you the strongest odds.

Is Optiver’s hiring process rolling or deadline-based?

Rolling. Optiver officially reviews applications as they arrive, and positions close once spots fill. This is confirmed across the Sydney, EU, and US offices. There’s no fixed deadline, but the candidate pool thins fast after the first month. Early submission isn’t optional; it’s the strategy.

What is Optiver’s 80-in-8 math test?

It’s 80 arithmetic problems in 8 minutes with no calculator. You earn +1 for correct and −1 for incorrect or skipped. You need roughly 56 to pass and 70+ to be competitive. Most unprepared candidates fail. Practice daily on Zetamac or tradermath.org for at least three to four weeks.

What GPA does Optiver require?

No GPA minimum appears on official job descriptions. Community sources suggest a 3.5+ expectation, but Optiver’s real filter is the online assessment and interview performance. A strong GPA alone won’t carry you past the 80-in-8, and a slightly lower GPA won’t disqualify you if your test scores are high.

How much do Optiver interns get paid?

Among the highest in the industry. US SWE interns earned $175 per hour in summer 2026, which works out to roughly $30,000 per month, plus a $10,000 sign-on bonus, corporate housing, flights, and daily meals. All-in summer value is estimated at $55,000 to $75,000 or more for 10 weeks.

What does the Optiver interview process look like?

Expect four to five rounds over three to six weeks. First comes the online assessment with five sections: mental math, probability, sequence puzzles, reaction games, and a behavioral questionnaire. Then a phone interview on probability and market scenarios. Finally, an on-site Super Day with a harder math test, trading simulation, and technical and behavioral interviews.

Do Optiver interns get return offers?

Community estimates put the conversion rate at 70 to 80%. Return offers are typically extended in September with acceptance deadlines around November. Evaluation covers project impact, team feedback, collaboration quality, and continued performance on trader tests. Optiver uses its internship as the primary pipeline into full-time graduate roles.

Can I apply to Optiver without a finance background?

Yes. Optiver states you don’t need experience in trading or finance. They hire from STEM backgrounds broadly and value how you think over what you’ve studied.

But the interview process tests mathematical reasoning, probability, and speed arithmetic at an extremely high level. Quantitative fluency matters; a specific major doesn’t.

The window is rolling and positions close as they fill. Spend the runway building proof: a remote Externship puts real quantitative and programming project experience on your resume before the 80-in-8 clock starts ticking.
