Optiver FutureFocus is a five-day, in-person discovery program for first and second-year students who want to see quant trading and trading technology up close, with travel and housing covered. The US edition, held in Chicago, isn't posted for 2027 yet. Based on its only prior cycle, expect applications to close around January 2027 for a program in late March 2027. Right now only the Amsterdam edition is open, and it's for UK, Irish and EU students.

The key detail most applicants miss: you have to apply to the edition run near your university, so US students wait for the Chicago posting rather than applying to the Amsterdam program that's open now.
FutureFocus selects first and second-years through an online assessment and interviews, so you'll want to show you can already build things or reason through data. A remote Externship like the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship gives you a finished technical project to put on your resume before the US posting goes live.
What Is Optiver FutureFocus?
FutureFocus is Optiver's five-day discovery program for first and second-year students, run in person at local offices. In the Technology track, you attend lectures and workshops with Optiver's tech education team and work through hands-on coding labs that build trading-system applications. In the Quantitative Trading & Research track, you learn from the trader development team through lectures, trading games, algorithm design contests, desk shadows and research workshops. Both tracks include Q&A panels and networking with Optiver's engineers, traders and researchers. The US edition is held in Chicago; in 2026 it ran as FutureFocus Tech.

Who Can Apply to Optiver FutureFocus?
Optiver's published eligibility, with the US 2026 posting as the most recent US reference:
• Class year: first and second-year students. The US 2026 Tech edition required students on track to graduate between December 2027 and June 2028; the Amsterdam 2027 edition asks for 2029 graduates
• Location: you must study at a local university for the edition you apply to, so US students apply to the Chicago edition
• Major (US 2026 Tech): pursuing a degree in computer science or computer engineering
• One application: one application per role per year, and one track only
• Work authorization: not published for the US edition
Optiver hasn't said whether the 2027 US edition will include a quant track in Chicago. It has run one before: Optiver's own story about FutureFocus alumni mentions participants from its Chicago Quants program.
When Does Optiver FutureFocus Open for 2027?
The US 2027 dates are projected, and the projection rests on a single prior cycle, so treat it as rough. The US 2026 edition, FutureFocus Tech 2026, ran in Chicago from March 22 to 27, 2026. Its posting was live through the winter and was taken down around January 26, 2026, a removal date from a job aggregator rather than a confirmed deadline. No US 2027 posting was on Optiver's board when we checked on October 16, 2026. The only FutureFocus 2027 posting live now is Amsterdam's Quants program, with a December 6, 2026 deadline for UK and Irish students and February 1, 2027 for EU students.
The US 2027 edition isn't posted yet. Set up a resume that shows code or data work, and check the FutureFocus page regularly.
US 2027 posting expected, based on the US 2026 posting being live last winter. Optiver hasn't published an open date.
US applications expected to close, based on the 2026 posting coming down around January 26, 2026. Apply as soon as it's live.
Five-day Chicago program expected, based on the March 22 to 27, 2026 edition.
Possible fast-tracked internship. The 2026 edition was a fast track toward a summer 2027 internship, so the 2027 edition would most likely point at summer 2028.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and the employer's own postings. Treat future dates as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The program's official page is always the most current source. If it's posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
How Do You Apply to Optiver FutureFocus?
Optiver uses the same process for FutureFocus as for its other student roles:
1. Watch the FutureFocus page for the US 2027 posting, and apply to the edition near your university.
2. Pick one track and submit your resume. Optiver allows one application per role per year.
3. Complete the online assessment Optiver sends to eligible candidates.
4. Do the behavioural and/or technical interviews.
Because the US window has closed around late January before, don't wait for the deadline. The assessment comes after you apply, so an early application gives you more time to prepare for it.
Does Optiver FutureFocus Lead to an Internship?
It can, but nothing is guaranteed. Optiver says excelling in the program could lead to a fast-tracked summer internship offer, and the US 2026 posting called it a fast-track opportunity toward a Software Engineering Internship for summer 2027. Optiver also points to two participants from its Chicago Quants program who went on to its quant trading internship. It doesn't publish how many participants get fast-tracked. For pay context, the US 2026 posting listed the downstream internship's base salary at $80,000 annualized; FutureFocus itself isn't paid. Our Optiver internship guide covers the internship cycle.
How Do You Build a Strong Optiver FutureFocus Application?
Selection runs through a resume screen, an online assessment and interviews. For a first or second-year, the resume is where you stand out, so these three things matter most.
| What to show | Why it matters here | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Code you've built | The Technology track runs hands-on coding labs on trading-system applications | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
| Quantitative reasoning with real data | The quant track centers on trading games and algorithm design contests; data analysis is the closest resume proof | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| A feel for how markets and valuation work | Not trading itself, but it shows you understand what drives prices | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Valuation |
Practice mental math and probability puzzles before the assessment. The quant track is built around trading games, and quick, accurate reasoning under time pressure is what those test.

FAQ
When does Optiver FutureFocus open for 2027 in the US?
It hasn't been announced. No US 2027 posting was live on October 16, 2026. Based on one prior cycle, expect the posting over the winter, applications closing around January 2027 and a Chicago program around late March 2027. That rests on a single year of data, so check Optiver's FutureFocus page often.
Can US students apply to the Amsterdam FutureFocus?
Generally no. Optiver says you need to study at a local university to be eligible, and the Amsterdam FutureFocus: Quants 2027 program is for UK, Irish and EU students. Its deadlines are December 6, 2026 for UK and Irish students and February 1, 2027 for EU students. US students should wait for the Chicago edition.
Is Optiver FutureFocus paid?
It isn't a paid role, but Optiver fully covers accommodation and travel. The US 2026 posting quoted a base salary of $80,000 annualized, but that figure was for the downstream internship, not for the five-day program. Optiver doesn't publish a FutureFocus stipend.
Who is eligible for Optiver FutureFocus?
First and second-year students at a university local to the edition. The US 2026 Tech edition required a computer science or computer engineering degree in progress and graduation between December 2027 and June 2028. Optiver doesn't publish a GPA minimum or work-authorization rules for the US edition, so check the 2027 posting.
Does FutureFocus lead to an Optiver internship offer?
It can, but it isn't guaranteed. Optiver says excelling in the program could lead to a fast-tracked summer internship offer, and the US 2026 edition was described as a fast track toward a summer 2027 software engineering internship. Optiver doesn't publish how many participants receive one.
What is the FutureFocus application process?
You submit a resume, then eligible candidates get an online assessment, followed by behavioural and/or technical interviews. You can apply once per role per year and to one track only, so choose between Technology and Quantitative Trading & Research before you apply.
Will there be a quant track in Chicago in 2027?
Optiver hasn't said. The US 2026 edition was a Technology program, but Optiver's own alumni story mentions participants from its Chicago Quants program, so it has run one before. Wait for the 2027 posting to see which tracks are offered in the US.
The US posting may only be live for a few weeks, and the assessment follows right after. Get a project on your resume now with a remote Externship so you're ready to apply the day FutureFocus goes live.
