Last updated: October 2026
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) posted 27 summer 2027 internship roles between 13 and 15 October 2026, and its postings say application reviews begin the week of 26 October. Positions stay open and are reviewed on a rolling basis, so the Council encourages you to apply early. Undergraduates can apply to 10 roles for a $7,000 stipend over 10 weeks; graduate and law students have 17 roles at $10,000. In plain words: you apply this fall, you intern in summer 2027.
The three summer sessions start on 24 May, 7 June and 21 June 2027, about 7 months after the roles went up, and many roles offer only one or two of them. Two spring 2027 roles are open as well, one with a 1 November 2026 deadline.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks (range 4–11) at 5 to 10 hours a week. The ARCeH Data Analytics Externship builds environmental and public health data skills, and the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you policy research work to describe in your cover letter. What Is an NRDC Internship?
An NRDC internship is a paid, 10-week summer placement with the Natural Resources Defense Council, working with lawyers, scientists or policy analysts on a program area, or with a team such as donor relations, communications or IT. NRDC also offers shorter semester internships in spring.
NRDC describes itself as an international nonprofit environmental organization founded in 1970, with more than 3 million members and online activists and some 800 policy advocates, lawyers, scientists and communication experts. It works from offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC. This guide describes the internship program, not NRDC's policy positions.

When Do NRDC Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
These dates come from NRDC's own postings. The 27 summer-2027 roles went live between 13 and 15 October 2026, and each says application reviews begin the week of 26 October, positions will remain open, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. None states a closing date. The only fixed deadline is on the Spring 2027 Litigation Intern role: 1 November 2026.
The summer sessions begin on 24 May, 7 June and 21 June 2027, so the posting-to-start gap is about seven months. An aggregator listing for the 2026 undergraduate role showed a March 2026 apply-by date, which we couldn't confirm on NRDC's site. We therefore expect summer 2028 roles to post from about October 2027, with medium confidence.
All 27 summer roles are open and review hasn't started. Pick the roles that match your level (10 undergraduate, 15 graduate, 2 JD/LLM) and note which sessions each offers; several offer only one or two.
Application reviews begin, on a rolling basis. The postings say positions remain open but encourage early applications.
Deadline for the Spring 2027 Litigation Intern role, a semester internship for law students with three openings. Offers go out on a rolling basis.
Rolling offers for summer. NRDC doesn't publish when offers go out, so expect to hear from the Talent Acquisition team only if you're selected for an interview.
Summer sessions begin, 10 weeks each, 35 hours a week. Summer 2028 roles are expected to post from about October 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
NRDC reviews applications on a rolling basis, and the postings say they "will remain open" while encouraging you to apply early. With 27 roles and a stated high application volume, a role can fill before reviewers reach a late application. We can't see which roles fill first, so the safest move is to apply before review begins the week of 26 October.
Each role is its own application, and NRDC lets you submit separate materials for different roles without replacing your earlier ones. Tailor a cover letter to each role and name the summer session or sessions you can join.
Which NRDC Internship Programs Should You Target?
NRDC groups its summer roles by academic level, and each role names the sessions it offers. A selection of the 27 roles:
| Level | Example roles (summer 2027) | Stipend | Who can apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate (10 roles) | Nature Innovation Hub; Industrial Decarbonization; Industrial Pollution Solutions; Public Engagement; IT Client Services; Donor Systems; Donor Relations; Major Gifts; Chief Program Office | $7,000 for 10 weeks | Currently enrolled undergraduates: rising sophomores, juniors, seniors and May 2027 graduates |
| Graduate (15 roles) | Adaptation Advocacy; Carbon Dioxide Removal; Insurance Policy Research; Food Waste Reduction; Clean Energy Research; Climate Mobility; Climate & Health; Economics Research; Green Finance Advocacy; Clean Energy Business; Freshwater Ecosystems | $10,000 for 10 weeks | Currently enrolled in a graduate program |
| Legal (2 roles) | Safe Water Initiative Legal; Federal Climate Initiatives Legal | $10,000 for 10 weeks | Currently enrolled in a JD or LLM program; Westlaw familiarity required |
| Spring 2027 (2 roles) | Litigation Intern (3 openings); Nature Innovation Hub Intern (graduate) | $4,000 for 140 hours | Law students (Litigation); graduate students (Nature Innovation Hub) |
The full list, with each role's sessions and location, is on the NRDC careers site; the careers page links examples of work by past interns.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Requirements depend on the role, but these appear across the postings:
• Enrollment: currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, a graduate program, or a JD or LLM program, matching the role's level. Undergraduate roles accept rising sophomores, juniors, seniors and recent graduates (May 2027).
• Skills: strong written and verbal communication, the ability to work independently, and research or data analysis skills. Legal roles require familiarity with Westlaw or comparable research tools.
• Values: the postings ask for a commitment to NRDC's mission, values and DEI principles, in NRDC's words.
• Time: 35 hours a week for 10 weeks, in one of three sessions (24 May, 7 June or 21 June starts). Several roles offer only certain sessions.
• Work model: hybrid, in office 3 days a week in summer, with no relocation assistance. Spring roles are in office about one day a week.

Do International Students Qualify?
The postings don't say. We searched the postings we read for authorization, sponsorship and visa language and found none, so we can't tell you either way.
The postings give intern-request@nrdc.org for questions, and the legal posting gives a separate legal-interns address. Ask there before you apply, and don't call or email individual staff, since the postings ask applicants not to.
What Skills Does NRDC Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Every summer posting asks for strong written and verbal communication and a commitment to NRDC's mission and values. Beyond that, project management and problem solving appear in 18 of 27, attention to detail in 17, and research or data analysis in 16. The tasks listed for interns include research, data collection and analysis, writing materials for state and federal campaigns, social copy, and project management.
Tool requirements are light: only the legal roles name Westlaw, and one posting mentions Excel. Role-specific deliverables are the better signal; the Clean Energy Business role, for example, lists a comparative market dashboard and sector trend briefs.

What Is the NRDC Application and Interview Process Like?
The postings describe a short, iCIMS-only process:
1. Apply on iCIMS. Submit a resume and a cover letter that highlights your interest in NRDC and names the summer session or sessions you can join. Applications without both documents aren't considered complete.
2. Don't email or call. The postings ask for no phone calls, emails or in-person drop-offs, and give intern-request@nrdc.org for technical or process questions.
3. Review. Reviews begin the week of 26 October 2026 and continue on a rolling basis.
4. Interview. NRDC says it will contact only the candidates it wants to interview, because of the high volume of applications.
5. Summer session. Interns start on 24 May, 7 June or 21 June 2027 for 10 weeks.
NRDC doesn't publish interview formats or offer dates.
What the Community Says
We found no first-hand account of NRDC's intern process on Reddit that we could verify. The threads we read were about law-school job searches in general, so this guide relies on NRDC's own postings instead.
How Do You Stand Out for an NRDC Internship?
Three moves, based on how the postings are written.
First, apply early and to the right level. Only 10 of the 27 summer roles are for undergraduates, so look at the graduate and legal lists too if you qualify, and apply before review begins the week of 26 October.
Second, name your sessions. The cover letter instructions ask which summer sessions you can join, and several roles offer only one or two, so flexibility helps.
Third, tailor each cover letter to the role's deliverables, such as a dashboard, a policy brief or a donor report. NRDC doesn't publish an acceptance rate or total class size for summer 2027, so there's no figure to quote.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 NRDC internship?
No. The summer 2026 roles are no longer posted on NRDC's careers site. Summer 2027 applications are open now: 27 roles went up between 13 and 15 October 2026, and reviews begin the week of 26 October. If you miss this wave, summer 2028 roles are expected to post from about October 2027.
When do NRDC summer 2027 applications close?
No closing date is stated. The postings say application reviews begin the week of 26 October 2026, that positions will remain open and that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. NRDC encourages early applications. The Spring 2027 Litigation Intern role is the exception, with a 1 November 2026 deadline.
Are NRDC internships paid?
Yes. Summer 2027 stipends are $7,000 for undergraduate roles and $10,000 for graduate and JD/LLM roles, paid bi-weekly over 10 weeks at 35 hours a week. Spring 2027 roles pay $4,000 for 140 hours. By our arithmetic, $7,000 over 350 hours is about $20 an hour.
Which summer sessions can I join?
There are three: 24 May to 30 July, 7 June to 13 August, and 21 June to 27 August 2027. Each role lists the sessions it offers, and many offer only one or two. Your cover letter should say which sessions you can join, as the postings request.
Can undergraduates apply for an NRDC internship?
Yes, for the 10 undergraduate roles. They accept currently enrolled rising sophomores, juniors, seniors and recent graduates from May 2027. The other summer roles are for graduate students or JD and LLM students, so check the level on each posting before you apply.
Where are NRDC internships located?
Mostly in Washington, DC, with roles also in New York, Chicago and San Francisco, and some roles listing Santa Monica as an option. Summer interns are expected in the office three days a week, and NRDC doesn't offer relocation assistance for the summer, so plan your own housing.
What do I need to submit to apply?
A resume and a cover letter, through iCIMS only. The cover letter should highlight your interest in NRDC and which summer sessions you can join. NRDC says it won't accept emailed applications and asks applicants not to call. You can apply to several roles with separate materials.
Does NRDC sponsor visas for interns?
The postings don't say. We found no work-authorization, sponsorship or visa language in them, so we can't confirm eligibility for international students. Ask the intern team at intern-request@nrdc.org before applying, and rely on their answer rather than third-party listings that state requirements NRDC itself doesn't.
If you can't apply before review begins, the next wave is expected from about October 2027, which leaves you a year to build proof. A remote Externship in data, policy or communications gives your application a finished project to point to.
