No Environmental Defense Fund internship is open today, but the next door is close. EDF's own internship FAQ says spring positions are posted in November, summer positions in mid-February and fall positions in early August. As of October 16, 2026 the openings page redirects to "Sorry, no internship openings are available." Plain words: you apply in November 2026 for spring 2027, or in mid-February 2027 for the June to August summer 2027 term.

Summer is the big cohort, with 80 to 100 interns working full time for 10 to 12 weeks. EDF doesn't publish a closing date for any term, so the safe plan is to be ready the week a posting goes up. This page covers Environmental Defense Fund (edf.org), not the French utility also abbreviated EDF.

What Is an Environmental Defense Fund Internship?

An Environmental Defense Fund internship is a paid, project-focused placement with EDF, the environmental nonprofit that describes itself as believing "environmental progress and economic progress go hand in hand." EDF says it has worked for almost 60 years, and it hosts interns in fall, spring and summer cycles.

EDF says its internships are "project-focused with a set goal" and are open to scientists, economists, attorneys, policymakers and advocates in training. Summer interns join a weekly speaker series, professional development workshops, social events and a lunch with EDF's president, and Intern Ambassadors act as mentors. Colleges, universities and community organizations also sponsor interns.

When Do Environmental Defense Fund Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

EDF states its posting calendar in its own FAQ, which is rare: fall positions in early August, spring in November, summer in mid-February. Summer lead time is short. A mid-February posting for a June start gives roughly three and a half months, and a university-sponsored listing for summer 2026 had a February 6, 2026 deadline, earlier than EDF's general posting month, so sponsored routes can close first.

EDF doesn't publish closing dates, application steps or an interview process for internships, so the dates below are posting months only.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

EDF doesn't say how long a posting stays open, so the evidence supports a short-window approach rather than a promise of weeks. The summer program is large, 80 to 100 interns, but EDF also hosts many students through university and community partnerships, and roles differ by team.

The practical steps: calendar the three posting months, check the openings page the week each begins, follow @edfinterns as EDF recommends, and have a resume and a short writing sample ready so you can apply in the first days.

Which Environmental Defense Fund Internship Programs Should You Target?

EDF runs three internship cycles a year and several separate programs for graduates and business students.

Details are on the EDF internships page and the fellowships page.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

EDF's program page gives one general rule, and each posting adds its own.

• Who: "current and recent undergraduate and graduate students."

• By posting: requirements differ. A 2026 partner-sponsored Power Sector role required enrollment in a graduate degree program, with Microsoft Office proficiency and R or Power BI listed as a plus. Treat that as one example, not the standard.

• Location: EDF has offices in Washington, DC, New York, Austin, Boston and San Francisco and lists some remote US roles; check each posting.

• Not stated: GPA, citizenship and work authorization aren't on the program page.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

No GPA is published for the general program, so there's no stated cutoff. Because requirements are set per posting, the thing to check is degree level: some roles are open to undergraduates and others, such as the 2026 Power Sector example, asked for a graduate program.

What Skills Does Environmental Defense Fund Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

EDF publishes no skills list for interns, and no posting is open to read. The one description we could read, a partner-sponsored Power Sector Analytics and Policy role from summer 2026, named research and policy analysis, data analytics, Microsoft Office, written and oral communication, and organization, with R or Power BI a plus. One listing isn't a pattern, so don't treat it as the general bar.

In that example, the interns assembled and analyzed power-sector data, helped interpret modeling scenarios and prepared memos, blog posts and fact sheets.

Note: No frequency chart: EDF had no internship postings open on October 16, 2026, and we could read only one earlier listing, so there is no sample to count.

What Is the Environmental Defense Fund Application and Interview Process Like?

EDF's pages don't describe the application steps or interviews. What they do say:

1. Check the openings page at edf.org/internship-openings. It shows a "no openings" page when none are posted.

2. Apply through the posting when it appears; EDF links an applicant site for returning applicants from its careers pages.

3. Follow @edfinterns on Instagram, which EDF itself recommends.

4. If your school is a partner, ask your career office early, since sponsored routes can have earlier deadlines.

5. Match one team's work, such as power sector, methane, oceans or legal, because postings are project-focused.

No interview format or decision timeline is published.

What Students on Reddit Say

We found no first-hand Reddit account from an EDF intern. The threads that mention EDF only list it among environmental employers, so there are no community cards here.

How Do You Stand Out for an Environmental Defense Fund Internship?

EDF says it hosts 80 to 100 summer interns, the largest cohort of its three seasons. It publishes no applicant count, acceptance rate or intern conversion rate.

Three moves are grounded in its pages. First, tie your application to one team's project and name the skill you'd bring, since postings are project-focused with a set goal. Second, check whether a partner program at your school sponsors EDF placements, because those routes can run on earlier dates. Third, plan an entry point: graduate students can consider EDF's fellowships, which post year-round about six months before the start date.

If you're a business student, EDF Climate Corps is a separate application.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Environmental Defense Fund internship?

No. Summer 2026 internships have ended, and EDF's openings page shows no internships on October 16, 2026. The next postings, per EDF's FAQ, are spring 2027 in November 2026 and summer 2027 in mid-February 2027. Calendar those months and check the page that week.

When does EDF post internships?

EDF's FAQ says fall positions are posted in early August, spring positions in November and summer positions in mid-February. Those are posting months, not deadlines, because EDF doesn't publish closing dates. The next one is spring 2027, expected in November 2026, so start preparing materials now.

Are Environmental Defense Fund internships paid?

Yes. EDF says it offers a range of paid internships. The pay rate appears on each posting and no program-wide figure is published, so we don't quote one. Check the rate when a posting goes up, and be cautious with third-party salary pages that aren't from EDF.

How many interns does EDF hire each summer?

EDF says summer is its largest season, with 80 to 100 interns who work full time from June through August, a 10 to 12 week term. Fall and spring cohorts are smaller, though EDF doesn't publish their size or length. Summer interns get a speaker series, workshops and mentors.

Who can apply for an EDF internship?

EDF says its internships are open to current and recent undergraduate and graduate students. Individual postings set their own requirements, and some partner-sponsored roles ask for enrollment in a graduate program. GPA, citizenship and work-authorization rules aren't on the program page, so read each posting.

What is the difference between an EDF internship and EDF Climate Corps?

They are separate programs with separate applications. EDF's internship page tells business students to apply directly on the EDF Climate Corps site. We haven't described Climate Corps terms here, so read that site for its eligibility and dates before assuming it works like an internship.

Does EDF offer fellowships?

Yes, for recent graduates. EDF lists legal and postdoctoral science and economics fellowships (two years), a community-based fellowship (two years) and a project management fellowship (one year). Fellows are full-time employees, and jobs may be posted year-round, generally about six months before the start date.

Are EDF internships remote?

It depends on the posting. EDF has offices in Washington, DC, New York, Austin, Boston and San Francisco and lists some remote US roles on its jobs page, and a 2026 partner-sponsored role was hybrid out of Washington. EDF doesn't publish an intern-wide work-model rule, so check each listing.

No EDF internship is open today, and spring 2027 postings are expected in November. A remote Externship gives your application a finished project to point to.
