NASA Pathways is a paid federal internship for US citizen students that can convert to a full-time civil service job after graduation. The spring 2027 window ran September 21 to 25, 2026 and is closed. Applications for summer 2027 are expected around February 2027 on USAJOBS, based on NASA's note that windows typically open around February and September. Windows last about five days, so have your two-page resume ready now.

FormatIn-person at a NASA center, at least 12 weeks per session, multi-semester appointment
ConversionPossible conversion to a permanent or term job within 180 days of graduating, after 480+ work hours; not guaranteed

The key detail most applicants miss: USAJOBS automatically rejects resumes longer than two pages, and the window is only about five days, so there's no time to fix it once it opens.

Pathways screens you through a two-page USAJOBS resume and a set of online assessments, so you need specific, measurable project work to list. A remote Externship like the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you a public-sector data project to add before the window opens.

What Is the NASA Pathways Internship Program?

Pathways is NASA's student hiring program, run under the federal Pathways Intern Employment Program. Unlike OSTEM internships, you're hired as a federal employee: you get a salary, can receive federal benefits (health, life, dental and vision, retirement and leave), and work under senior engineers and scientists on design, test, evaluation or research tied to your major. You follow an Individual Development Plan of assignments and training, may rotate through assignments, and come back for multiple sessions while you're in school. NASA describes Pathways as "a structured employment pipeline into civil service."

Who Can Apply to NASA Pathways?

Each USAJOBS vacancy lists its own required majors, but these rules apply to every Pathways posting:

• Citizenship: US citizen

• Age: at least 16

• Enrollment: enrolled or accepted for enrollment at least half time in an accredited institution, working toward a degree or certificate

• GPA: cumulative 2.9 on a 4.0 scale, kept up throughout the program

• Credits: at least 15 semester hours or 23 quarter hours completed

• Major: aligned to NASA workforce needs and listed in each vacancy

• Timing: able to complete at least 480 work hours before you finish your degree; the spring 2027 Physical Sciences posting required a graduation date on or after April 17, 2027

• Paperwork: a signed Pathways Participant Agreement, a background investigation and, for eligible men, Selective Service registration

Recent federal hiring changes show up in the latest posting: it says the role may require a two-year trial period and asks that candidates be committed to improving the efficiency of the federal government. Read the current announcement closely before applying.

When Does NASA Pathways Open for Summer 2027?

The summer 2027 window isn't published yet. NASA's Pathways page says summer 2027 dates and positions will be posted in spring 2027, and NASA's FAQ says windows open twice a year, typically around February and September. Applications for summer 2027 are expected around February 2027, based on that pattern. The last window, for spring 2027 starts, ran just five days: September 21 to 25, 2026.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and the employer's own postings. Treat future dates as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The program's official page is always the most current source. If it's posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

How Do You Apply to NASA Pathways?

Pathways runs through USAJOBS and a multi-step federal assessment:

1. Research NASA centers on NASA's Pathways page and pick vacancies that match your major and up to two hiring center locations.

2. Create a USAJOBS profile and a resume of two pages or fewer. Longer resumes are rejected automatically.

3. Apply during the open window and upload a transcript (unofficial is fine) or an acceptance letter.

4. Complete the USA Hire online assessments, which take about three hours. They cover Attention to Detail, Flexibility, Interpersonal Skills, Learning, Problem Solving, Self-Management and Technology Application.

5. Move through the remaining hurdles: the Early Career Talent Assessment, panel reviews and structured interviews.

Watch the AI rules. NASA's Pathways page allows AI tools for grammar and style only, and the spring 2027 USAJOBS announcement prohibits AI-assisted drafting of application and assessment answers. Follow the stricter rule and check the current posting.

Does NASA Pathways Lead to a Full-Time Job?

It can. NASA may convert Pathways interns to a full-time permanent or term (1 to 6 year) civil service position within 180 days of finishing their degree, once they've completed at least 480 hours. The USAJOBS posting is clear that it isn't automatic: being eligible for conversion doesn't guarantee NASA will offer you a term or permanent job. The appointment itself expires 180 days after you complete your degree. For NASA's other student tracks, see our NASA internship guide.

How Do You Build a Strong NASA Pathways Application?

Pathways is a federal hiring process, so the application turns on three things: a tight resume with measurable results, evidence you can work carefully with data and systems, and strong scores on the USA Hire assessments. Here's how to build the first two.

FAQ

When does NASA Pathways open for summer 2027?

It isn't published yet. NASA says summer 2027 dates and positions will be posted on its Pathways page in spring 2027, and windows typically open around February and September. Applications for summer 2027 are expected around February 2027. The last window ran only five days, September 21 to 25, 2026.

How much does NASA Pathways pay?

Pathways interns earn a federal salary set by GS grade, education and duty location. The spring 2027 Physical Sciences Student Trainee posting paid $17.82 to $48.07 an hour, GS-4 to GS-9. Interns may also receive federal benefits, including health, life, dental and vision insurance, retirement and leave.

What GPA do you need for NASA Pathways?

A cumulative 2.9 on a 4.0 scale, kept up throughout the program. You also need US citizenship, to be at least 16, to be enrolled at least half time in an accredited degree or certificate program, and to have finished at least 15 semester hours or 23 quarter hours.

Can international students apply to NASA Pathways?

No. Pathways is federal employment and requires US citizenship. You'll also go through a background investigation, and eligible men need to be registered with Selective Service. NASA's OSTEM internships require US citizenship too, so neither is open to students on a visa.

What's the difference between NASA Pathways and OSTEM?

Pathways hires you as a federal employee with a salary and a path to conversion, applied through USAJOBS. OSTEM pays a stipend for a single project session, applied through STEM Gateway, with no stated job track. NASA calls OSTEM skill building and Pathways an employment pipeline into civil service.

How long is the NASA Pathways application process?

The window itself lasts about five days, but the process runs longer. After you apply, you take the USA Hire assessments (about three hours), then face the Early Career Talent Assessment, panel reviews and structured interviews. Spring 2027 hires applied in September 2026 and start January 25, 2027.

Does NASA Pathways lead to a full-time job?

It can, but it isn't guaranteed. After at least 480 hours, NASA may convert you to a permanent or term civil service job within 180 days of graduating. The USAJOBS posting states that eligibility for conversion doesn't guarantee NASA will offer a term or permanent job.

The summer 2027 window is expected around February and may last only five days. Get your two-page resume done in the fall, and if it's short on results, a remote Externship adds a finished project before the window opens.
