The Aerospace Corporation isn't a defense contractor. It's the nonprofit that runs the federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) for the US space enterprise, the group the government brings in to check the work of the companies that build satellites and launch vehicles. It earned $1.4 billion in 2025 with 4,800+ employees, 79% of them technical staff.
On 3 October 2026 its Workday board carried 39 live intern requisitions, every one titled "2027", posted between 7 September and 1 October 2026. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027. Each role has its own deadline, so a few early ones have already closed.

What Is an Aerospace Corporation Internship?
An Aerospace Corporation internship is a paid, full-time summer placement of at least 10 weeks inside the nonprofit that operates the space FFRDC, working under staff engineers and scientists in El Segundo, Chantilly or Colorado Springs. Every internship is paid, and interns join technical teams rather than a separate intern project pool.
The work is analysis and verification more than production. The 2027 Guidance, Navigation, and Control req, for one, asks interns to "verify contractor designs, approaches, and overall launch vehicle GN&C performance." That's the FFRDC role in one line.
Aerospace was created in 1960 and has been led since October 2025 by President and CEO Tanya Pemberton. It also runs intern mentoring and TECTalk networking sessions, per its students page.

When Do Aerospace Corporation Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The summer 2027 wave opened on 7 September 2026, when the first seven 2027 reqs posted to Aerospace's Workday board, and it's still growing. Nine more appeared between 28 September and 1 October, including software engineering, electro-optical and a cleared software integration role in Chantilly.
Some doors have already shut. The ML Engineering, Cloud Solutions and SRE reqs that listed End Dates of 30 September and 2 October 2026 are gone from the board, and the Workday system now returns a closed-requisition response for the ML Engineering graduate req. Last cycle, Aerospace kept adding summer 2026 reqs, including finance and data roles, from January through April 2026.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 39 reqs across space systems, flight mechanics, structures, propulsion, electrical, software and test. Check the End Date on each one before anything else. The 2027 Returning Interns req, for 2026 interns only, closes October 6, 2026.
Five summer 2027 reqs close: Remote Sensing Architecture, Rendezvous and Proximity Operations, Space Control and Awareness, Space Object Risk (all graduate) and Systems of Systems/Portfolio Analysis (undergraduate). No late entry is listed.
Phone screens and on-site interviews run through the season. Six graduate reqs for summer 2027 close February 26, 2027, including Trajectory Optimization and Systems Integration and Test. The 27 reqs with no End Date close when they're filled.
More summer 2027 reqs expected, based on last cycle, when Aerospace posted new summer 2026 roles from January through April 2026, including Finance and Business Operations and Data and Analytics interns. Offers were still going out in March 2026.
Internships start May 17, May 24, June 1, June 14 or June 21, 2027 and end between August 6 and September 3, on-site, for at least 10 weeks. Strong interns can come back through the next year's returning-intern req.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
This isn't a rolling window. Aerospace sets an End Date on many of its reqs, and the req disappears when that date passes: the ML Engineering and Cloud Solutions roles were live on 27 September and gone by 3 October. The deadline on your target req is absolute, and the next batch closes October 30, 2026.
The 27 reqs without an End Date aren't safer. They're open until filled, and Aerospace screens applicants as they arrive, with HR passing qualified profiles to hiring managers. Clearance-track roles also need paperwork after the offer, which favors candidates who apply early in the fall.
Which Aerospace Corporation Internship Programs Should You Target?
Aerospace posts one requisition per role and level, so undergraduate and graduate versions of the same job are separate reqs with different pay bands. Here's how the 39 live reqs group:
| Track | Focus | Level (live reqs) | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Space systems architecture and analysis | Remote sensing, tracking, navigation, space control, space object risk, enterprise design, portfolio trades | Mostly graduate (11 reqs, 2 undergraduate) | Several close Oct 30, 2026; two require Top Secret/SCI eligibility |
| Flight mechanics | GNC, trajectory optimization, rendezvous and proximity operations, flight dynamics | Graduate (4) | Trajectory and flight dynamics close Feb 26, 2027 |
| Structures and propulsion | Structural dynamics and mechanics, flight loads, chemical and in-space propulsion | Undergraduate (3), graduate (2) | El Segundo; no End Date posted |
| Electrical, power and signals | Power systems, analog circuits, digital systems, communications, SDR/DSP, electro-optics | Undergraduate (5), graduate (4) | El Segundo and Chantilly |
| Software | Software engineering, tools and assurance, acquisition, cleared integration | Undergraduate and graduate (6) | Chantilly cleared role requires Top Secret/SCI eligibility |
| Test, reliability and returning interns | Systems integration and test, reliability and statistics, returning 2026 interns | Mixed (4) | Returning Interns req closes Oct 6, 2026 |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Across the 39 live summer 2027 reqs we read on 3 October 2026:
• Enrollment: full-time in an accredited bachelor's, master's or PhD program, able to work 10+ weeks outside the school term and return to school after. Rising sophomores through graduate students are invited, but some reqs require sophomore or junior standing by the start date.
• Clearance and citizenship: all 39 reqs mention a security clearance, and 37 state that "U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance." Three require Top Secret/SCI eligibility.
• Visa: Aerospace's careers FAQ says it can't sponsor students on F-1 status.
• GPA and transcripts: at least 27 reqs set a 3.0 minimum, 25 list 3.5 or higher as a way to stand out, and 32 require transcripts.

Does Aerospace Help With Summer Housing?
Mostly no. 29 of the 39 reqs say "Temporary housing assistance is not available." Aerospace's intern relocation page describes limited help for eligible interns who live 50+ miles away: round-trip travel, six nights of temporary lodging and some shipping. It also says summer housing is the intern's responsibility. Budget for El Segundo rents and confirm the details in your offer.

None of these replaces engineering coursework, but a finished, explainable project is exactly what the technical presentation stage of an Aerospace interview asks you to talk through.
What Is the Aerospace Corporation Application and Interview Process Like?
Aerospace's careers FAQ and community reports describe a process built around a technical conversation more than a coding test:
1. Apply on Workday. Submit to each req that matches your level, with transcripts ready (32 of 39 require them). LinkedIn import is supported, per the FAQ.
2. HR screen. The People Acquisition team compares your profile with the req and passes qualified candidates to hiring managers. You're contacted only if selected; other profiles stay on file.
3. Phone interviews. Hiring managers or group members run one or more calls on your coursework, projects and fit, according to community reports.
4. Technical seminar or presentation. Many groups then run an on-site stage where you present your research or a project and engineers question you on it. Commenters say communication counts as much as depth.
5. Offer and clearance paperwork. Offers can land in the fall or as late as March, and technical roles then start the clearance process.
The interview reports on Reddit are mostly from full-time candidates, so treat the format as a guide and ask your recruiter what your group runs.
What Students on Reddit Say
Discussion of Aerospace internships is thin and spread across a few subreddits, but three threads describe the process, the culture and the timing.
Expect HR to screen first, then phone interviews, then an all-day stage with a technical seminar where engineers question you about your own research. People who went through it say it tests how clearly you communicate more than how much you know.
A Summer 2022 intern called the experience very good, with real room to move laterally into work you like. A current software engineer adds that work-life balance is strong and the pace is slower than the private sector but far more stable.
A senior weighing a Mission Engineering intern offer in Colorado Springs, received in March 2026, against a Lockheed Martin systems role was told to pick Aerospace if they wanted to be an analyst doing modeling and simulation.
How Do You Stand Out at a Space FFRDC?
Three moves, all doable this month.
Pitch yourself as a verifier. The reqs keep describing independent analysis: verifying contractor designs, mission assurance, anomaly resolution. Frame your projects around testing someone's assumptions, not just building the thing.
Rehearse a 10-minute talk on your own project. The technical seminar is where candidates win or lose, and engineers will push on your choices. Pick one project with real analysis behind it and practice explaining the trade-offs.
Match the req, and apply to more than one. Undergraduate and graduate versions are separate reqs, and 3.0 is the usual floor, with 3.5+ listed as a stand-out. Apply to every req your level and major fit.
On return offers, Aerospace doesn't publish an intern-to-full-time conversion rate. Its FAQ says "Many employees began their Aerospace careers as interns or co-ops," with eligibility based on hiring needs and performance.

Summer 2027 internships are full-time and on-site for at least 10 weeks. Start dates are May 17, May 24, June 1, June 14 or June 21, 2027, and end dates run from August 6 to September 3, 2027, according to Aerospace's returning-intern req.
Does Aerospace hire interns full time?
It does, but it doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its careers FAQ says many employees began their careers as interns or co-ops, with eligibility based on hiring needs and past performance. Aerospace also posts a dedicated req each year for prior interns returning to the same role.
What if I miss the fall deadlines?
You may still have options. Last cycle, Aerospace posted new summer 2026 reqs from January through April 2026, including finance and data roles, and offers were still going out in March. But the technical reqs open in September, so apply this fall if you can.
Aerospace's summer 2027 reqs are open now, and the next deadlines fall on October 30. While you apply, a remote Externship gives you one more finished project to present in the technical interview.
