Mutual of America recruits late and close to the start date. The New York retirement-plan insurer, founded in 1945 to serve nonprofits, posted its summer 2026 internships around March 7, 2026 for an 8-week program that ran June 8 to July 31, about three months of lead time. On October 5, 2026 its job board listed 13 openings and none were internships. In plain words: you apply during 2027, around February to March, and you intern in summer 2027.

The 2026 postings paid $20 an hour, asked for a 3.4 GPA and four office days a week at 320 Park Avenue, and took only rising sophomores and rising juniors. Rising seniors weren't eligible. If that fits you, use the next four months to get ready, not to wait.

What Is a Mutual of America Internship?

A Mutual of America internship is a paid, 8-week summer program at Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, trading as Mutual of America Financial Group, a New York insurer that provides retirement plans and related services. It was founded in 1945 to serve small and mid-sized nonprofits and now also works with companies, governmental entities and Tribal enterprises. Interns join one department, such as Legal, HR systems or Financial Reporting, get direct guidance from its leaders and can attend training classes and planned events with the intern class. Its careers page lists more than 750 salaried employees. It isn't Mutual of Omaha or MassMutual, which are separate companies.

When Do Mutual of America Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Mutual of America runs one summer intake on a short lead. Its summer 2026 roles appeared on job boards around March 7, 2026, and the program started June 8, about three months later. We found no fall recruiting wave and no spring or fall cohorts. So applications for summer 2027 are expected around late February to March 2027, for a program likely running early June to late July 2027. This projection rests on one dated cycle, so check the board from early February in case the roles post sooner.

Summer 2027 roles are expected to post, based on summer 2026 roles appearing around March 7, 2026. Apply in the first week; with a June start, the window is likely short.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Mutual of America gives a short window, not a long rolling season. Last cycle the roles appeared around March 7 and the program began June 8, which leaves only a few weeks for applications before interviews and offers have to happen. The postings don't state a closing date, and none were left on the board by October, so you can't count on a late spot. The class is also narrow: only rising sophomores and juniors with a 3.4 GPA who can be in New York four days a week. Apply the week a role appears.

Which Mutual of America Internship Programs Should You Target?

Mutual of America runs one program and posts a separate role for each department. These are the 2026 roles we could confirm; the 2027 list isn't posted yet.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

These rules come from the 2026 Legal and HRIS postings; expect similar terms for 2027:

• Class year: "Only accepting rising Sophomores (grad year May 2029) and rising Juniors (grad year May 2028)." For summer 2027 that likely means May 2030 and May 2029 graduates. Rising seniors were excluded.

• GPA: "Must have a minimum overall 3.4 GPA."

• Location: must be able to commute to New York City four days a week, Monday to Thursday.

• Work authorization: not stated in the postings we read; ask the recruiter if you need sponsorship.

• Major: not restricted in the postings; each department sets its own work.

Is the 3.4 GPA a Hard Cutoff at Mutual of America?

Treat it as one. Both 2026 postings we read say "must have" a minimum overall 3.4 GPA, in the same list as the class-year and commuting rules. The class-year rule is the one most applicants miss: a rising senior can't apply, however strong the record.

What Skills Does Mutual of America Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Mutual of America's postings describe work more than tool lists. Both 2026 postings we could read in full ask interns to research, document their work clearly and work with partner teams under regulatory or audit rules. Legal adds research and memos on SEC rules, insurance regulation, privacy and cybersecurity. HRIS adds hands-on system testing and mapping data flows between HR platforms. A 2015 intern also recalled classes on public speaking and business etiquette.

What Is the Mutual of America Application and Interview Process Like?

Mutual of America doesn't publish its interview steps, and we found no dated first-hand account. Based on the 2026 postings:

1. Watch the board. Check the UKG job board weekly from early February 2027; roles also get copied to student job sites, which link back to it.

2. Check the gates. Rising sophomore or junior, 3.4 GPA, four days a week in Manhattan.

3. Apply to each department separately. Each role is its own posting with its own duties.

4. Interviews. Format isn't published. Expect questions on why the nonprofit and public-sector retirement market interests you, plus the basics of the department you picked.

5. Offer. Expected before the early-June start; timing isn't published.

How Do You Stand Out for a Mutual of America Internship?

Three moves. First, be ready the week it posts. With roughly three months between posting and start, a resume ready in February beats a perfect one in April. Second, pick your department on purpose. Interns noted that how meaningful the work feels depends on placement, so apply to the role that matches what you can already do: research and writing for Legal, systems and data for HRIS, accounting for Financial Reporting. Third, show you understand the client base. Every posting opens with the nonprofit and public-sector retirement mission. A sentence on why that market interests you sets you apart. Mutual of America publishes no applicant count, class size or conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Mutual of America internship?

No. The summer 2026 program ran June 8 to July 31, 2026. Summer 2027 isn't open yet either: on October 5, 2026 the job board had 13 openings and no internships. Expect summer 2027 roles around late February to March 2027, and check the board weekly from early February.

When do Mutual of America summer 2027 applications open?

Expected around late February to March 2027. Summer 2026 roles appeared around March 7, 2026, about three months before the June 8 start. That's one dated cycle, so treat the projection as an estimate and check the job board from early February in case postings arrive sooner.

How much does a Mutual of America internship pay?

The 2026 summer postings listed $20 an hour for Legal and for HRIS and Data Integration, and job-site copies of the Financial Reporting role showed the same rate. Weekly hours weren't stated, so total pay depends on your schedule. 2027 pay hasn't been posted yet.

Can rising seniors apply to Mutual of America's internship?

Not in 2026. The postings said they were "only accepting rising Sophomores (grad year May 2029) and rising Juniors (grad year May 2028)." If the rule repeats for summer 2027, it would cover students graduating in May 2029 or May 2030. Rising seniors should look at other insurers.

Is the Mutual of America internship remote?

No. The 2026 postings were hybrid but required commuting to the New York City home office at 320 Park Avenue four days a week, Monday to Thursday. Interns are in the office with their department and attend training classes and planned events with the rest of the intern class.

What is the GPA requirement for Mutual of America interns?

A minimum overall 3.4 GPA, stated as a must on both 2026 postings we read. It sits alongside the class-year and commuting rules, so expect applications below that line to be screened out. The 2027 postings may change it, so read the requirements when they go up.

Which departments take Mutual of America interns?

The 2026 postings we confirmed were Legal, HRIS and Data Integration, and Financial Reporting. Each department posts its own role with its own duties, from regulatory research memos in Legal to system testing and data-flow mapping in HRIS. The 2027 list will show when roles post.

Is Mutual of America the same as Mutual of Omaha or MassMutual?

No. Mutual of America is a New York retirement-plan insurer founded in 1945 to serve nonprofits. Mutual of Omaha is an Omaha-based life and health insurer, and MassMutual is a Springfield, Massachusetts life insurer. Each runs its own internship program on its own calendar.

Mutual of America's summer 2027 roles are expected around late February to March 2027. Until then, build something to show: a remote Externship gives you a finished project for your application.
