Last updated: October 2026

Munich Re's summer 2027 internships are open now, and they sit inside four different US companies. On October 5, 2026 the Munich Re careers board listed 18 US summer intern roles: the reinsurer's Summer Leadership Development Program (SLDP) out of Princeton, actuarial and analytics interns at Munich Re Life US in New York, HSB in Hartford and American Modern in Amelia, Ohio. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

Posted pay runs from $25 to $27 an hour for the SLDP to $44 to $54 an hour for New York analytics interns. The SLDP recruits "between August and November," so the season is already half over.

What Is a Munich Re Internship?

A Munich Re internship is a paid summer program at one of Munich Re's US companies: Munich Re America (reinsurance and specialty P&C, Princeton), Munich Re Life US and its NA Integrated Analytics team (New York), Hartford Steam Boiler, or HSB (Hartford), and American Modern Insurance Group (Amelia, Ohio). Each posts its own roles. Munich Re describes itself as "the world's leading reinsurance company with more than 40,000 employees," and its North America page lists 14 offices across the US and Canada. HSB is a Munich Re company and isn't the same employer as The Hartford insurance group.

When Do Munich Re Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Munich Re's summer 2027 roles posted between August 11 and September 30, 2026, about nine months before the May 2027 start. Board dates are a lower bound: several unrelated roles share an August 10 stamp. The SLDP page names the season outright, recruiting "between August and November," and a first-hand Reddit post from November 2022 already held a New York life-reinsurance offer, which fits a fall calendar. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around August to September 2027, based on this cycle's posting dates.

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 18 US roles across the SLDP, Munich Re Life US, NA Integrated Analytics, HSB and American Modern. All 18 were still live on October 5.

October to November 2026ROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

The SLDP's stated recruiting season for summer 2027 ends in November: a 30 to 45 minute phone interview, then a half-day assessment, then offers. The other roles are rolling and can close once filled.

January 2027

HSB's Risk Modeling intern starts part-time in January 2027, then goes full-time for 11 weeks from May, so it suits students near Hartford.

Summer 2027

Internships start in May 2027: 12 weeks for the SLDP, 11 for HSB, about three months for the New York analytics team. The SLDP feeds a limited number of full-time roles and Munich Re's two-year International Graduate Trainee Program.

August to November 2027EXPECTED

Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post, following this year's August to September posting dates and the SLDP's August to November season.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Munich Re fills on a rolling basis inside a fixed season. No posting carries a deadline, but the SLDP page says recruiting runs "between August and November," and its process (phone interview, half-day assessment, offer) runs inside that window. The SLDP posted on August 11, so applicants who sent theirs in August and September are already in interviews. The New York, Hartford and Ohio roles are single requisitions that can come down once a seat is filled, and HSB's Actuarial posting says it has just two openings. Apply this month rather than waiting for a cutoff that never gets published.

Which Munich Re Internship Programs Should You Target?

Munich Re's 18 US roles split across five programs at four companies. Pick by function and city.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Requirements differ by company, so read the posting you're applying to:

• SLDP: "only open to students who are in their junior year" of an undergraduate program or in the first year of a graduate program, with a GPA of 3.25 and above. You must be open to all five placement cities.

• HSB Actuarial: sophomore year completed, a 3.5 GPA, a major in math, actuarial science or finance, and one actuarial exam preferred.

• American Modern: rising juniors or seniors on most roles; the Actuarial role requires one passed actuarial exam; Graphic Design wants a rising senior with an online portfolio.

• Munich Re Life US actuarial: an undergraduate or master's student in actuarial science, math, statistics, risk management or a related field.

• Work authorization: 13 of 18 postings (SLDP, all four NA Integrated Analytics roles and all eight American Modern roles) exclude candidates who need sponsorship now or later, including OPT and CPT. The US Life actuarial and four HSB postings don't address it.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff at Munich Re?

Only two programs state one, and both read as requirements: the SLDP's 3.25 and HSB actuarial's 3.5. The New York and American Modern postings name no GPA. Sponsorship is the firmer gate for international students: where it's mentioned, OPT and CPT are named as excluded. For the five postings that are silent on it, ask the recruiter before you invest in interviews.

What Skills Does Munich Re Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Munich Re's postings share a core of analysis, communication and organization. On top of that, actuarial roles want exam progress and Excel (American Modern requires one passed exam), analytics and data roles want Python and SQL, and the New York Data Science posting names GenAI, LLM APIs and agent building as a plus, alongside AI coding tools. American Modern's roles add Power BI, ArcGIS, Figma and the Microsoft Office suite. Eight of the 18 postings come from American Modern and share one template, so the shared skills lean that way.

What Is the Munich Re Application and Interview Process Like?

Each company posts its own roles, so you apply to each one separately on the same careers board. The SLDP publishes its steps; the others don't.

1. Apply per posting. Each program and city is its own requisition on careers.munichre.com, including HSB and American Modern.

2. Phone interview (SLDP). A 30 to 45 minute call, per the SLDP page.

3. Half-day assessment (SLDP). A half-day assessment session before any offer.

4. Technical screens (data roles). A 2022 data engineering intern candidate described a Python and SQL coding interview; expect something similar for analytics roles.

5. Offer. SLDP offers go out within the August to November season; the rolling roles move as they fill.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit threads on Munich Re internships are few and mostly older, so read these as dated first-hand reports.

A student weighing a Munich Re life-reinsurance internship in New York against a pension-consulting offer said Munich Re would pay for the apartment. Most actuaries in the thread told them to take Munich Re for the life-reinsurance exposure and in-person learning.

Former American Modern staff said the company valued being a good workplace both before and after Munich Re bought it, with an internal board for transfers across Munich Re. A one-time actuarial intern said valuation work followed Munich Re's European rules.

How Do You Stand Out for a Munich Re Internship?

Three moves. First, apply to the right Munich Re. Reinsurance underwriting is the SLDP in Princeton, life actuarial and analytics are in New York, engineering-flavored specialty insurance is HSB in Hartford, and personal specialty lines are American Modern near Cincinnati. Naming the business in your cover note shows you've read past the logo. Second, bring proof for the gate. Actuarial roles reward a passed exam (American Modern requires one), and New York analytics wants Python, SQL and some machine learning, with GenAI or agent work as a stated plus. Third, be flexible on the SLDP. You must accept any of five cities, so say so plainly. Munich Re publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Munich Re internship?

No. Summer 2026 has already run. The open door is summer 2027: on October 5, 2026 Munich Re's US companies had 18 intern roles live, starting May 2027. The SLDP's recruiting season ends in November 2026, so apply to it this month.

When do Munich Re summer 2027 applications close?

No posting states a deadline. The SLDP page says recruiting runs between August and November, so plan on November 2026 as its practical end. The other roles are single requisitions that come down when filled, and HSB's actuarial posting has only two openings. Apply in October.

How much do Munich Re interns make?

Posted ranges are $25 to $27 an hour for the SLDP, $30 to $35 for the New York life actuarial intern and $44 to $54 for the New York analytics interns. HSB and American Modern don't post a figure, so don't assume those ranges carry over.

What is the Munich Re Summer Leadership Development Program?

It's a paid 12-week internship at Munich Re America starting in May, for juniors or first-year master's students with a 3.25 GPA. Interns work on underwriting and related projects with a mentor and are placed in Princeton, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago or Atlanta.

Does Munich Re sponsor visas for interns?

Mostly no. Thirteen of the 18 US postings, including the SLDP and every New York analytics and American Modern role, exclude anyone who needs sponsorship now or later, OPT and CPT included. The US Life actuarial and HSB postings don't address it, so ask before applying.

Is HSB part of Munich Re?

Yes. Hartford Steam Boiler, or HSB, is a Munich Re company in Hartford, Connecticut. It runs an 11-week undergraduate summer program with actuarial, data science and risk modeling interns. It's a different company from The Hartford, the insurance group that runs its own internships.

Is there a Munich Re internship in Ohio?

Yes, through American Modern Insurance Group in Amelia, near Cincinnati, a Munich Re subsidiary. Its 2027 class has eight roles: accounting, actuarial, data and analytics, insurance risk management, marketing strategy, UX design, GIS and graphic design. Interns spend about 40 to 50% of their time in the office.

Do Munich Re interns get full-time offers?

No conversion rate is published. The SLDP page says Munich Re has a limited number of full-time positions for graduating students, and the program prepares interns for its two-year International Graduate Trainee Program. HSB's postings list potential full-time opportunities after graduation.

Munich Re's SLDP season ends in November 2026. Apply this month, and build a project to talk about in parallel: a remote Externship gives you finished data or finance work to bring to Munich Re's interviews.
