MIT Lincoln Laboratory says it has hired "more than 200 students" in recent summers, and every one of its summer reqs prints the pay ladder: $25.00 an hour after freshman year up to $43.50 for a student three years past a master's. On 3 October 2026 its careers board listed 15 summer 2027 intern reqs and 12 co-op reqs, all in Lexington, Massachusetts, and seven of the summer reqs were added on 28 and 29 September alone. Every one requires US citizenship and the ability to hold a Secret clearance.

In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, and you intern in summer 2027. There's no deadline, but group leaders screen applications as they arrive.

Lincoln Lab's summer 2027 reqs are open now and still being added, one research group at a time. No req has a deadline, so the advantage goes to students who apply in the fall while groups are still choosing.

Lincoln Lab interns own a technical project and present it at the end of the summer, so arriving with a finished project helps. Externships are short, remote programs where you complete a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship fits the Lab's cyber reqs, and the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship fits its software and AI work. Explore all Externships.

What Is an MIT Lincoln Laboratory Internship?

An MIT Lincoln Laboratory internship is a paid summer research placement in one of the Lab's technical groups, usually through its Summer Research Program (SRP). Lincoln Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center that MIT has managed for the Department of Defense since 1951, on 75 acres beside Hanscom Air Force Base in Lexington, Massachusetts. Unlike many research centers, it builds working prototypes of the systems it designs, from radar and laser communications to microelectronics. Each req belongs to a numbered group, such as Group 66 (Laser Communications) or Group 05-59 (Cyber System Assessments), and SRP interns take ownership of a project they present at the end of the term. The program adds mentorship, workshops, tech talks and an Intern Innovative Idea Challenge, where interns pitch a new technique or device of their own.

When Do MIT Lincoln Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Lincoln Lab hires interns group by group. The first summer 2027 req on the board appeared at the end of August 2026, more followed through September, and seven new summer reqs went up on 28 and 29 September. Titles name the year ("Summer Research Program Intern 2027" or "(Summer 2027)"), so there's no ambiguity about the cycle. That gives roughly eight to nine months of lead time from the first postings to a mid-May start. Last cycle the reqs stayed up for a long time: students on Reddit saw summer 2026 postings still live in April 2026 and one had an interview in May. But with no deadline, earlier applicants reach group leaders while more projects are still unfilled. Applications for summer 2027 are open now, and co-op reqs for terms starting in January 2027 are open alongside them.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

There's no deadline at Lincoln Lab, so the urgency comes from how groups pick. A student on Reddit who interned in optics says group leaders receive a stack of applicants and decide for themselves how to screen them. A group with one or two projects can fill them from the applications it already has, and nothing on the req tells you when that's happened.

That makes the fall the strongest time to apply. Reqs went up from late August, and seven more arrived at the end of September. If you see a group whose work matches yours, apply that week rather than waiting for spring, when last cycle's remaining reqs were the ones still unfilled.

Which MIT Lincoln Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?

Lincoln Lab's student hiring runs through two main programs. Every req is tied to one research group, so pick groups, not just the program.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Lincoln Lab's requirements are short and strict:

• Class standing: completed at least sophomore year at the time of employment, or enrolled in a master's or doctoral program. Some reqs set a higher bar: the Group 05-59 cyber reqs ask for juniors, seniors or graduate students.

• Academic record: the SRP page asks for "an excellent academic record" but doesn't publish a GPA.

• Citizenship: "U.S. citizenship is required" on all 27 summer and co-op reqs.

• Clearance: all 27 reqs require a pre-employment background investigation and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret DoD clearance.

• Majors: set by the group; electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, physics, math and mechanical engineering are common.

Can Freshmen Apply?

Usually not. The SRP page says students must have completed at least their sophomore year, and the reqs repeat that. The pay table still starts at "Freshman year completed: $25.00/hour," which suggests some groups may take earlier students, but don't count on it. If you're a freshman, use this year to build a project and apply as a rising junior. MIT students have extra routes, such as UROP, that don't follow the SRP rule.

What Skills Does MIT Lincoln Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Lincoln Lab writes each req for one group's systems, so the skills vary, but the 15 summer 2027 reqs share a pattern:

• Hands-on technical work: every req describes lab, test or prototype work, such as building a lasercom prototype or hardware-in-the-loop testing.

• Code for real systems: software development in 10, and Python, C/C++ or MATLAB in 10.

• Domain depth: optics, photonics or lasers in 9, electronics and RF in 8, signal processing in 7.

Teamwork shows up in 11, and several reqs ask you to explain technical work to engineers in other disciplines.

What Is the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?

Lincoln Lab's process is set by each group, so it varies more than at most employers:

1. Search by group. Search careers.ll.mit.edu for "Summer" or "Co-op" and read each group's description. Apply to each req that fits; they're separate.

2. Group review. Group leaders receive the applicants for their req and decide how to screen them, according to a former intern on Reddit.

3. Interview. Often one conversation about your goals, interests and past work, though some groups add technical questions.

4. Offer and pay tier. Your hourly rate is set by the highest academic year or degree you'll have completed before the start date.

5. Background investigation. Offers are contingent on a pre-employment investigation and the ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

Lincoln Lab also recruits at about 100 campus events at 25 schools a year, so check whether it's coming to yours this fall.

What Students on Reddit Say

Most Lincoln Lab intern talk sits in r/mit, with useful threads from non-MIT students too.

The interview process depends on the group. Group leaders get a stack of applicants and choose how to handle them; one optics intern had a single relaxed interview that was mostly a conversation about their goals and the interviewer's own path.

Don't rent in Lexington for a short stint. Live in Cambridge or Boston and ride the Lab's shuttle, which also runs from the Northeastern dorms in summer, and leave the car at home because parking is hard.

A former intern says the work suits students leaning toward research, with PhD mentors who can write strong recommendation letters. Their group hired several new bachelor's grads that summer, none from MIT, and they warn the sophomore pay wasn't competitive with tech.

How Do You Stand Out at MIT Lincoln Laboratory?

Three moves that fit how the Lab hires.

First, apply to groups, not to Lincoln Lab. Each req names a group and its systems, from undersea sensing to air traffic control. Match your resume to that group's work and apply to every group that fits.

Second, show a project you owned end to end. SRP interns take ownership of a project and present it at the end of the term. A build, test or analysis you led from start to finish, with a result you can explain to an engineer outside your field, answers what the reqs ask.

Third, confirm the gates early. US citizenship and a Secret clearance are required on every req. If either is a problem, look elsewhere now rather than in spring.

The Lab doesn't publish a conversion rate. It says only that a student's time there "can evolve into post-graduation employment."
