What Is a Manhattan Institute Internship?

A Manhattan Institute internship is a paid, 10 to 12 week placement through the Collegiate Associates Program, with teams spanning research centers, communications and marketing, and City Journal, the Institute's urban affairs magazine. The Institute describes itself as a community of scholars, journalists, activists and civic leaders and is based at 52 Vanderbilt Avenue in New York. Its site organizes its work by area: cities, culture, economics, education, governance, health, public safety and tech. This page describes the program only, not the Institute's views. It isn't related to the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis, Manhattan University or other schools with similar names.

When Do Manhattan Institute Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Institute runs a standing posting rather than a one-off window. Both student programs were first published on 29 May 2025 and last updated on 27 June 2026, and they list the same suggested dates for each term: November 15 for spring, April 15 for summer and July 15 for fall. The posting gives no year, so we treat the dates as repeating annually. Spring starts in late January, about two and a half months after November 15, and summer starts in late May, about a month and a half after April 15.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

The Institute states that applications are considered on a rolling basis. That's the evidence for applying early. The November 15, April 15 and July 15 dates are what it encourages, not hard closing dates, and it doesn't say how many places each term has. The practical advice is simple. A rolling review rewards the complete application that arrives well before the date.

Which Manhattan Institute Internship Programs Should You Target?

There are two student programs on the Institute's board. A third posting, a mid-career fellowship, isn't a student role and isn't covered here.

Collegiate Associates (spring and fall)Research centers, communications and marketing, City Journal: research, journalism, outreach and programming10–12 weeks, 5–20 hrs/wkOrganization, attention to detail, time management, written and verbal communication

Law School AssociateConstitutional Studies and Legal Policy teams: research, drafting, editing and outreach10–12 weeksLegal research on Westlaw or Lexis, synthesis, project management; Bluebook and quantitative research preferred

The Institute's site also carries older General Program and E.S. Savas Intern Fellowship pages, last modified in 2023, which we haven't treated as active.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The requirements come from the live postings:

• Who can apply: undergraduates, recent graduates and graduate students for Collegiate Associates. Law School Associates must be enrolled in law school or a JD/MBA program.

• GPA: a minimum of 3.25 for Collegiate Associates.

• Application materials: a cover letter, a letter of recommendation and a writing sample, with a short essay on intellectual influences in place of the sample for Law School applicants, which makes the packet heavier than a typical internship application.

• Location and authorization: New York, with remote and hybrid options and in-person preferred. The posting doesn't state work authorization rules, so ask before you rely on a visa.

Is the 3.25 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

It's listed as a requirement: successful Collegiate Associates must have a minimum 3.25. The postings don't say whether exceptions exist, so assume a real floor. The Law School posting lists no GPA figure in the text we read.

What Skills Does the Manhattan Institute Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The postings read as writing and research jobs. Collegiate Associates need organization, attention to detail, time management and strong written and verbal communication, and they're expected to contribute, for example by pitching event ideas, improving internal processes, writing policy commentary or presenting research. Law School Associates add legal research tools such as Westlaw or Lexis and Bluebook citation.

Note: The Manhattan Institute posts two standing student postings rather than a set of requisitions, so there are too few job descriptions to count and this page shows no skill chart. Skills here are read from the Collegiate Associates and Law School Associate postings on its Greenhouse board, 16 October 2026.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

The postings ask for research, writing and project management. These remote Externships build the adjacent skills.

A remote Externship runs 4 to 11 weeks, most commonly 8, so one started now can finish before the spring term begins in late January.

What Is the Manhattan Institute Application and Interview Process Like?

The Institute's published process is short:

1. Choose your program and apply on the Greenhouse posting. Collegiate Associates for undergraduates, recent graduates and graduate students; Law School Associate for law and JD/MBA students. The postings are standing, so you pick your term in the application.

2. Submit three documents. A cover letter, a letter of recommendation and a writing sample. Law applicants send an essay of 300 words or less on intellectual influences instead. Recommenders can email their letter directly.

3. Apply before your term's date. November 15, April 15 or July 15.

The Institute doesn't publish interview stages, so we haven't described any.

What Students on Reddit Say

We found no first-hand Manhattan Institute internship accounts on Reddit. Searches mostly returned schools with similar names and political commentary, so we haven't used them.

How Do You Stand Out for a Rolling Associates Program?

Three moves. First, apply early: the process is rolling, so a complete application in October beats the same one on November 15. Second, choose a writing sample that shows short-form policy writing, since the sample is one of three required documents. Third, line up your recommender immediately. The letter is required, and it's the document most likely to delay an otherwise complete application. The Institute doesn't publish an applicant count or return-offer rate, so we won't estimate either.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Manhattan Institute internship?

Are Manhattan Institute internships paid?

Yes. Collegiate Associates are paid $17 an hour in New York and California, and Law School Associates are paid $22 an hour. The postings also mention generous benefits, including hybrid and remote work options, without itemizing them. The program runs 10 to 12 weeks per term.

When should I apply for a summer 2027 Manhattan Institute internship?

Apply before April 15, 2027, and earlier is better because applications are rolling. The posting gives no year, so we read the date as repeating annually. Summer runs from late May through early August. The posting describes summer hours both as full-time and as 10 to 20 hours a week.

What GPA do I need for the Manhattan Institute Collegiate Associates Program?

The posting lists a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for Collegiate Associates. It doesn't say whether exceptions are possible, so plan on it being a real floor. We found no GPA figure in the Law School Associate posting, which asks for current law school or JD/MBA enrollment.

What do I submit to apply to the Manhattan Institute?

A cover letter, a letter of recommendation and a writing sample. Law School applicants submit an essay of 300 words or less on their intellectual influences instead of a writing sample. Recommenders can choose to email their letter of recommendation directly to the Institute.

Are Manhattan Institute internships remote?

Remote and hybrid options are offered, though in-person attendance in New York is preferred. The Institute is based at 52 Vanderbilt Avenue, and the Law School program is listed as a New York hybrid role. Ask about expectations for your term once you're in contact.

Who can apply to the Manhattan Institute internship?

Undergraduates, recent graduates and graduate students are encouraged to apply to the Collegiate Associates Program, and law school or JD/MBA students apply to the Law School Associate Program. The postings don't state citizenship or work authorization rules, so confirm yours directly.

Is the Manhattan Institute the same as Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis or Manhattan University?

No. This page covers the Manhattan Institute, the New York policy think tank at 52 Vanderbilt Avenue. It isn't related to the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis, Manhattan University or the other schools and training centers that share part of its name, whose programs are separate.

Applications are open and rolling, with the next suggested date on November 15. Send a complete packet early, and use a remote Externship to turn research and communications skills into finished work for your writing sample.
