Johnson Controls runs two internship calendars, and most students only know about one. Its Future Leaders business internships for summer 2027 went live in September 2026, and on 3 October 2026 its own Workday board still listed them: Accounting & Finance in Milwaukee, three Supply Chain & Operations reqs and a new HVAC Controls Intern in Amherst, NY, all paying a published $21 to $25.50 an hour. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027. Engineering and software interns run on a different clock. Last cycle, most summer-2026 engineering, digital and controls reqs posted between February and May 2026, so the bulk of summer-2027 engineering roles is expected around February to May 2027. This is the building-technology company behind HVAC, fire, security and controls systems (not Johnson & Johnson), with $23.6 billion in fiscal 2025 sales and a North American base in the Milwaukee area.

What Is a Johnson Controls Internship?

A Johnson Controls internship is a paid placement inside the company's Future Leaders Internship Program or one of its engineering teams, working on buildings technology such as HVAC equipment, building automation, fire and security systems. The early careers page describes weekly development sessions, executive events, volunteering and a signature Innovation Challenge; the Accounting & Finance req says that challenge runs 8 weeks and ends with a presentation to senior leadership. Johnson Controls says Yello x WayUp named its intern program one of the Top 100 Internship Programs in the United States. Business interns sit in Milwaukee or in manufacturing plants, while engineering interns work on power electronics in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, controls in Glendale, Wisconsin, or building automation projects in the field. The internships feed named full-time programs: SCOR for supply chain and the Accounting & Finance Rotation Program for finance.

When Do Johnson Controls Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Johnson Controls splits its calendar by track. The Future Leaders business reqs for summer 2027 posted between 3 and 25 September 2026, with one more Future Leaders req (HVAC Controls, Amherst, NY) added on 1 October, about 9 months before a June start. Engineering is later and shorter: last cycle, summer-2026 software, digital and controls reqs posted from 19 February to 26 May 2026, a lead of only 1 to 4 months, so most summer-2027 engineering roles are expected around February to May 2027. That projection comes from a third-party dated list that starts on 31 January 2026, so treat it as medium-low confidence: some engineering reqs may appear earlier, as Power Electronics (Summer 2027) already has.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now for Accounting & Finance, Supply Chain & Operations (Lubbock, Marinette and an Airside req), HVAC Controls in Amherst, NY and Power Electronics in New Freedom, PA. The St. Louis HVAC Controls Sales Engineer intern req, posted 21 September, had already closed by 3 October.

Apply first, then build proof alongside it: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship covers plant-style KPI work, and the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship fits connected building-controls roles.
October–December 2026

Supply Chain & Operations applicants are asked to answer video interview questions right after applying, and the careers site warns that its AI assistant "Emma" may text you. Interviews run on Microsoft Teams. Last cycle, a student already held a plant internship offer by 5 October 2025.

February–May 2027EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Engineering, software, digital and controls reqs for summer 2027 expected, based on the 19 February to 26 May 2026 posting dates last cycle. Set a Workday alert for "intern" in January so you see each req the week it posts.

Spring 2027EXPECTED

Late engineering adds and offers for summer 2027. The off-cycle Mechanical Engineering Intern (Spring 2027) runs on site in New Freedom from January to May 2027 for students who can take a semester away.

Summer 2027

Internships start around June (exact date not published). Supply Chain & Operations runs 12 weeks in a plant; every Future Leaders intern joins the 8-week Innovation Challenge and presents to senior leaders. The plant track is built to lead into the SCOR rotational program.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

The live reqs carry no closing date, so this is a rolling process, not a deadline. Rolling here still means fast. The St. Louis sales-engineering intern req went up on 21 September 2026 and was closed by 3 October, about two weeks later. The Salem software/controls intern req did the same: posted 4 September, closed by 28 September, then reposted on 2 October. The Supply Chain & Operations reqs add a second timer: they tell applicants in capital letters to finish the mandatory video interview questions as soon as possible after applying. Apply in the first week a req appears, finish the video step the same day, and answer the Emma texts.

Which Johnson Controls Internship Programs Should You Target?

Ten US intern reqs were live on 3 October 2026. Six target summer 2027; the rest are fall, spring or school-year engineering roles.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Each req sets its own rules, so read the one you're applying to. Across the 10 live US reqs:

• Enrollment: full-time student at an accredited US college or university. Supply Chain & Operations adds a graduation window of December 2027 to June 2030; the Salem software/controls role wants a master's student.

• Work authorization: Supply Chain & Operations requires US citizenship or permanent residency ("we're unable to sponsor visas for these roles"). Most other reqs ask for US citizenship or the legal right to work in the US.

• Major: industrial or mechanical engineering and supply chain for the plant track; accounting or finance for A&F; electrical or mechanical engineering for the engineering roles.

• Practical: plant interns need personal transportation and must be comfortable relocating; relocation support is offered for moves over 60 miles.

• GPA: not stated in any of the 10 live reqs.

Can You Choose Your Plant Location?

Only partly. The Supply Chain & Operations reqs say that applying in any location means you're considered for all of them, and that location isn't guaranteed. A student holding an offer in October 2025 said only two of the six possible sites suited them. If location matters, say so early and ask the recruiter directly.

What Skills Does Johnson Controls Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The live reqs read as three skill sets. Plant and finance roles lean on Excel ("particularly Excel" in the supply chain reqs), Lean and KPI reporting, and forecasting. Engineering roles name circuit design, MATLAB/Simulink, building automation and basic coding. Every Future Leaders req asks for clear communication, because the summer ends with an Innovation Challenge pitch to senior leaders.

What Is the Johnson Controls Application and Interview Process Like?

Johnson Controls publishes its screening steps across its reqs and careers page:

1. Apply on Workday. One Supply Chain & Operations application puts you in the pool for every listed plant.

2. Video interview questions. Supply Chain & Operations reqs say you'll be asked to complete mandatory video questions straight after applying, and to do them as soon as possible.

3. Emma, the AI assistant. The careers site warns that candidates may get SMS or WhatsApp messages after using its chatbot. A Reddit commenter who joined the company said not replying can stall an application.

4. Interviews on Microsoft Teams. The careers page says interviews run on Teams and emails come from @jci.com addresses. The reqs note that AI tools may help screen, but people make the hiring decision.

5. Offer. Last cycle, plant offers were out by early October 2025, with the location still to be assigned.

Johnson Controls' own interview tip is to research the business and answer in STAR format.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit discussion of Johnson Controls internships is thin but useful on timing and the screening bot.

A student weighing offers in early October 2025 already held a Johnson Controls internship offer, but the plant location was undecided, and only two of the six possible sites appealed. Commenters said location can make or break the summer and told them to ask the recruiter.

Applicants describe the same screening chatbot texting them on every Johnson Controls application, and some find it off-putting. Others in the thread say to treat it as part of the process and answer it if you want the role.

r/recruitinghell consensus, paraphrased · read the thread

In an older thread, a student choosing between software internship offers at Johnson Controls and HPE said the pay was about the same; the top reply leaned toward Johnson Controls for having heard nothing negative about it.

How Do You Stand Out for a Johnson Controls Internship?

First, match the track's evidence. Plant applicants should bring one Lean or Excel story with a number in it (a cycle time cut, a report automated); finance applicants should show a forecast or budget model they built. Second, aim past the internship. The supply chain reqs say the internship prepares you for the SCOR rotational program, and the finance track feeds the Accounting & Finance Rotation Program, so say which one you want. Third, know the products. Johnson Controls makes chillers, building automation systems and fire and security equipment; one sentence on how a building controls system saves energy separates you from applicants who think this is a healthcare company. Johnson Controls doesn't publish a return-offer rate, only that the program often leads to long-term careers.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Johnson Controls internship?

No. Summer 2026 internships have ended, and Johnson Controls is now hiring for summer 2027. Its Accounting & Finance, Supply Chain & Operations, HVAC Controls and Power Electronics reqs for summer 2027 are open now. Most engineering and software roles for summer 2027 are expected around February to May 2027.

When do Johnson Controls summer 2027 internship applications open?

It depends on the track. Future Leaders business reqs for summer 2027 opened between 3 and 25 September 2026 and are still accepting applications. Most engineering, software and digital reqs for summer 2027 are expected around February to May 2027, based on when last year's equivalents posted.

Is there a deadline, or is it rolling?

It's rolling. None of the live reqs state a closing date, but reqs close without warning: the St. Louis sales-engineering intern req lasted about two weeks. Apply the week a req appears and finish the video interview questions straight away, since the supply chain reqs ask for that.

How much do Johnson Controls interns earn?

The live reqs publish hourly ranges. Accounting & Finance, Supply Chain & Operations, Power Electronics and Controls Applications pay $21 to $24. HVAC Controls and the spring Mechanical Engineering role pay $22 to $25.50, and the master's-level software/controls role in Salem pays $21 to $32.

Does Johnson Controls sponsor visas for interns?

Not for the plant track. Supply Chain & Operations reqs require US citizenship or permanent residency and say visas can't be sponsored. Most other live reqs ask for US citizenship or the legal right to work in the US, so international students should check each req before applying.

Is there a GPA requirement?

None of the 10 live US intern reqs states a minimum GPA. They screen on enrollment, major, graduation window and work authorization instead. Supply Chain & Operations, for example, wants students graduating between December 2027 and June 2030 who have their own transportation and can relocate.

What is the Johnson Controls interview process?

Apply on Workday, complete the video interview questions, and reply to texts from the Emma chatbot. Interviews then run on Microsoft Teams. The reqs say AI tools may help screen candidates but people make the decisions. Last cycle, plant offers were out by early October.

Do Johnson Controls interns get full-time offers?

Johnson Controls doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its supply chain reqs say the internship prepares students for the two-year SCOR rotational program after graduation, and the early careers page calls the program a launchpad that often leads to long-term careers at the company.

Business tracks are open now and engineering opens in spring. Use the gap: a remote Externship gives you a finished operations, finance or controls project to point to in the video interview.
