Last updated: October 2026
ICF's summer 2027 internships are open now, and the firm says how long the window lasts: recruiting "begins in September each year and continues until all positions are filled or mid-February, whichever comes first." On October 12, 2026, ICF's internship listings showed 30 summer 2027 intern postings, each titled "2027 Summer Intern," and 16 of them had gone up between October 7 and 9. Most postings that state pay say $23 an hour for undergraduates and $28 for graduate students. In plain words: you apply between September 2026 and mid-February 2027, and you intern in summer 2027.
This is ICF the consulting and technology firm (NASDAQ: ICFI), headquartered in Northern Virginia. It isn't the International Coaching Federation. Each role is its own posting, none of the 30 states a deadline, and roles close as they fill. Check work authorization before anything else: 18 of the 30 postings require US citizenship or permanent work authorization because of contract terms.
What Is an ICF Internship?
An ICF internship is a paid, 10-week, full-time summer role on one ICF team, running from early June to August. ICF (ICF International, NASDAQ: ICFI) is a consulting and technology services firm headquartered in Northern Virginia. Its work covers energy, climate and resilience, disaster management, federal health and digital modernization, and Vault lists it at about 9,000 employees. Interns are hired role by role, and ICF's internship program page says it hires "from freshmen just starting out to PhDs with years of experience." Each intern is paired with a peer mentor "2-3 years into their career journey" and joins development sessions through the summer.
On Vault's 2026 practice-area rankings, ICF is #9 for environmental sustainability consulting, #12 for energy consulting, #13 for aerospace and defense consulting and #18 for public sector consulting. ICF also runs two programs that aren't internships: ICmyFuture in Consulting, an exposure program for high school seniors and undergraduates, and the Summer Development Series. It doesn't publish an intern class size or acceptance rate.

When Do ICF Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
ICF publishes its own window: recruiting for summer internships "begins in September each year and continues until all positions are filled or mid-February, whichever comes first." This cycle matches. The first two summer 2027 postings, Contracts Administration and Pricing Associate, went up on September 15, 2026, about eight and a half months before the early June 2027 start. Five more followed on September 25, six on September 29 and 30, one on October 2 and 16 between October 7 and 9, for 30 in total on October 12, 2026.
So the wave is still building, and more summer 2027 roles are expected through the fall. At the back edge, a role posted near mid-February 2027 would open only about three and a half months before the start. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around mid-September 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now. On October 12, 2026, ICF listed 30 intern postings, the first from September 15 and 16 of them from October 7 to 9. No posting states a deadline.
More summer 2027 roles are expected to post, since 16 of the 30 appeared in a single week of October. ICF reviews on a rolling basis, so apply when your role appears and don't hold out for a later one.
ICF's stated end of intern recruiting for summer 2027: "until all positions are filled or mid-February, whichever comes first." Individual roles can close earlier, as soon as they're filled.
Late interviews for summer 2027 may still run; last cycle a candidate reported an interview for an ICF AI intern role on March 20, 2026. Separately, ICF says ICmyFuture in Consulting applications open in spring 2027 and Summer Development Series registration in May 2027.
The internship runs 10 weeks, full-time, from early June to August 2027. Recruiting for summer 2028 is expected to start around mid-September 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
ICF is a rolling employer, and it says so itself. Its internship page gives two closing conditions, "until all positions are filled or mid-February," and the first one is the one that catches people. None of the 30 summer 2027 postings carries an end date, so nothing on the board tells you a role is about to close. It's simply gone once the team has its intern.
Each posting is also a single team with one or a few seats, not a general pool. If the Energy Markets and Policy role fills in November, a February applicant has nothing to apply to. Search "2027 Summer Intern" weekly, since 16 roles appeared in one week of October, and apply the week yours is posted.
Which ICF Internship Programs Should You Target?
ICF doesn't have one internship program with tracks. It has 30 separate summer 2027 postings, which fall into five groups.
| Group | Roles posted for summer 2027 | Locations | Stated pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy, climate and environment (8) | Climate Center; Energy Markets and Policy; Energy Researcher; Environmental Planner; Wildlife Biologist; Sustainable Mobility; Transportation Planner; Research & Analysis | Reston, Arlington, New York, Colorado, Austin | $23/hr undergraduate, $28/hr graduate where stated (4 of 8 state a rate) |
| Utility program delivery (4) | Program Operations (three regional postings); Program Delivery (California) | Remote with regional preference; Tempe, Albuquerque; California offices | $23/hr undergraduate, $28/hr graduate (all 4) |
| Disaster management (3) | Disaster Management (rotates through three service lines); Disaster Management Financial Analyst; Resilience Coordinator | Tallahassee, Baton Rouge, Austin; one remote option | $28/hr graduate on Resilience Coordinator; not stated on the other two |
| Data and technology (6) | AI Engineer; Data Scientist; Data Engineer; Data Analytics; Business Analyst; Configuration Analyst | Reston, Denver; several remote options | $32/hr AI Engineer (graduate); $23/hr Business Analyst; $23/$28 Data Analytics; not stated on the other three |
| Corporate and growth (9) | Contracts Administration; Pricing Associate; Business Transformation; Growth Enablement; Offering Solutions & Sales Support; Sales Associate; Marketing and Communications; Communications Specialist; Human Capital and Learning | Reston, Arlington, Atlanta; several remote options | $23/hr where stated (5 of 9 state a rate); $28/hr graduate on Business Transformation |
Two other ICF programs aren't internships. ICF says applications for ICmyFuture in Consulting, an exposure program for high school seniors and undergraduates, open in spring 2027, and registration for its Summer Development Series opens in May 2027; both are on its early talent programs page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Eligibility at ICF is set posting by posting. Across the 30 summer 2027 postings:
• Undergraduate credit hours: 19 postings ask for at least 30 completed college credit hours by the start date, four ask for 15 and four ask for 60.
• Graduate students: many postings also take graduate interns with "a completed bachelor's degree and enrollment verification" or 9 graduate credit hours. Three roles are graduate-only: AI Engineer, Data Scientist and Resilience Coordinator.
• Work authorization: 8 postings require US citizenship ("U.S. Citizenship is required per Federal contracts"). Another 10 say "U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Work Authorization is required." The other 12 state no citizenship or sponsorship line, which isn't a promise of sponsorship.
• Work model: mostly hybrid from a named office, commonly two days a week in Reston or Arlington. Ten postings allow remote work, some with a state preference.
• Housing: the postings say ICF is "unable to provide housing or relocation assistance."
• GPA: no posting states a minimum.

Can Freshmen and Sophomores Apply to ICF?
Often, yes. ICF counts completed credit hours, not class year. Thirty credits is about one year of full-time study, so a student finishing their first year can meet the bar on 19 of the 30 postings. The four that ask for 15 credits (Business Transformation, Marketing and Communications, Offering Solutions & Sales Support, Pricing Associate) are within reach after one semester. Four roles want 60 credits, which usually means rising juniors: Climate Center, Communications Specialist, Growth Enablement, and Human Capital and Learning. Read the credit line and the authorization line on each posting before you write anything.

What Skills Does ICF Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
ICF's intern postings ask for office tools far more often than code. Excel appears in 21 of the 30 postings, PowerPoint in 17 and Word in 14, usually next to writing, quality checking and managing several deadlines. Analytics tools show up in a narrower set: Power BI in 7, Python in 6, R in 5, GIS in 4 and SQL in 3. The Program Operations postings ask for familiarity with "Power BI, Power Query, or VBA," and the Climate Center role wants "a quantitative tool or software (e.g. Python, R, or GIS)." Project-style work is common in the technology roles: the Data Analytics intern will "complete a defined analytics project," and the Pricing Associate helps with "building, maintaining, and quality-checking pricing models."

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each ICF skill below maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to discuss in interviews.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis and reporting | Data Analytics: "complete a defined analytics project"; Program Operations: "Power BI, Power Query, or VBA" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Operations and program delivery | Program Operations and Program Delivery: "program coordination, documentation, research" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| AI engineering and data pipelines | AI Engineer: "production-ready code in languages such as Python, Java, C++, R, JavaScript"; Data Engineer: "Write SQL and code to transform, validate, and prepare data for analysis" | Pfizer Advanced: AI-Powered Document Insights & Data Extraction |
| AI productivity tools and automation | Research & Analysis: "AI-enabled productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT)"; Growth Enablement: "Explore and apply AI tools to accelerate content development" | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
No open Externship covers energy markets, climate science or environmental planning, so we haven't stretched one to fit. For those roles, your coursework and a clear writing sample carry more weight.
What Is the ICF Application and Interview Process Like?
ICF doesn't publish interview rounds for interns. Here is what its program page and the postings say, plus one former employee's account:
1. Search "2027 Summer Intern." Every intern title starts with that phrase. ICF says applying through its career site "is the best way to get in touch with our recruiters."
2. Apply yourself, role by role. The postings say the application "must be submitted directly by the applicant," and that others may be excluded.
3. State a team preference where asked. The Program Operations, Program Delivery and Contracts Administration postings ask you to note a focus area on your cover letter or resume.
4. Interview without AI help. Every posting carries a Candidate AI Usage Policy: using AI tools "to generate or assist with responses during interviews" isn't permitted.
5. Offer. Timing is rolling. Roles close as they fill, up to mid-February.
On Reddit, a former ICF employee said technical interviews depend on the team and that many skip LeetCode for practical exercises. Our behavioral interview guide covers the project and resume questions candidates describe.
What People on Reddit Say
We found no first-hand account of the ICF summer internship itself on Reddit. These threads cover an intern interview and entry-level roles, so read them as context.
A former employee said the technical interview depends on the team, that many teams skip LeetCode for practical exercises, and that you should be ready to discuss everything on your resume. The poster later called their own interview easy: basic behavioral and project questions.
A current policy analyst described a fully remote job with real flexibility and weeks that rarely pass 40 hours. They said staff move between projects based on skills and availability, and that a quoted $60k to $70k sounded right for an entry-level analyst.
A student posted on March 20, 2026 that they'd landed an interview for an ICF AI intern position and asked what to expect. That's five weeks after ICF's mid-February recruiting cutoff, so interviews can run later than postings do.
How Do You Stand Out for an ICF Internship?
Three moves. First, filter before you write. Read the authorization line and the credit-hour line on each posting. Eighteen of the 30 need US citizenship or permanent work authorization, and three are graduate-only, so a quick read saves wasted applications. Second, match the team, not the firm. Each posting belongs to one team. Name the tools that posting lists (Excel in 21 of 30, Power BI or Python on the analytics roles), and where the posting asks for a focus-area preference, put it on your resume or cover letter. A clean writing sample helps, because most roles involve drafting and quality checking deliverables. Third, apply early and plan your summer. Roles close as they fill, the postings say there's no housing or relocation help, and interviews must be done without AI tools. ICF publishes no applicant count, class size or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 ICF internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and ICF stops intern recruiting by mid-February each year. The open cycle is summer 2027: 30 postings titled "2027 Summer Intern" were live on October 12, 2026, and ICF says recruiting continues until all positions are filled or mid-February 2027, whichever comes first.
When do ICF internship applications open for summer 2027?
They opened on September 15, 2026, when the first two summer 2027 postings went up. Thirty were live by October 12, 2026, including 16 posted between October 7 and 9. ICF says recruiting starts each September and runs until roles are filled or mid-February, so more postings are expected this fall.
Does ICF hire interns on a rolling basis?
Yes. ICF's internship page says recruiting continues "until all positions are filled or mid-February, whichever comes first," and none of the 30 summer 2027 postings states an end date. Each posting is one team with limited seats, so a role can disappear well before February once it's filled.
How much do ICF interns get paid?
ICF prints pay in many postings. For summer 2027, 15 postings state $23 an hour for undergraduate interns, nine state $28 an hour for graduate interns, and the graduate AI Engineer role states $32. Thirteen postings give no hourly rate. The postings also say ICF can't provide housing or relocation assistance.
Does ICF hire international students as interns?
Often not. Of the 30 summer 2027 postings, eight require US citizenship and ten more require US citizenship or permanent work authorization, citing federal or client contract terms. The other 12 state no citizenship or sponsorship line, which isn't a promise of sponsorship. Read the line on each posting.
Can freshmen or sophomores get an ICF internship?
Yes, on many roles. ICF sets eligibility by completed credit hours: 19 of the 30 summer 2027 postings ask for 30 credits by the start date and four ask for only 15. Four want 60 credits and three are graduate-only. ICF says it hires "from freshmen just starting out to PhDs."
Are ICF internships remote?
Some are. Ten of the 30 summer 2027 postings allow remote work, a few with a preference for certain states. Most of the rest are hybrid from a named office, commonly two days a week in Reston or Arlington, Virginia. Field roles such as Wildlife Biologist involve travel to project sites.
Do ICF interns get return offers?
ICF describes its internship as "a conversion opportunity." Interns are eligible, contingent on performance, for a returning internship or a full-time role after graduation. ICF doesn't publish a conversion rate, an intern class size or an applicant count, so treat any percentage you see elsewhere as unofficial.
ICF's summer 2027 roles are open and close as they fill, so apply to the ones that fit this month. To back up your application with finished work, a remote Externship gives you a data analysis, operations or AI project you can walk through in an interview.
