Last updated: October 2026
HBK CPAs & Consultants hires interns one office at a time, and 13 of those office postings are open right now. On October 12, 2026, the firm's Workday job board listed Tax Intern openings in ten offices and Assurance Intern openings in three, across Ohio, New Jersey, New York and Florida. None of them names a season or a year in its title, and none has a deadline. Each one says the same thing about timing: "Our spring internships run January through April."
In plain words: the nearest cohort is the spring 2027 busy season, which starts in January 2027, and summer 2027 interns are hired from the same office-level postings. There is no single firmwide deadline. Six of the postings publish a rate, from $25 to $28 an hour. HBK also takes sophomores, which is earlier than most firms its size.
What Is an HBK Internship?
An HBK internship is a paid, in-office position at HBK CPAs & Consultants, an accounting firm founded in 1949 and based in Canfield, Ohio, near Youngstown. The firm's CPA practice is licensed as Hill, Barth & King LLC. Interns join either the tax or the assurance team in one office, during the spring busy season or the summer. HBK's postings call it a Top 50 accounting firm according to Accounting Today, and the firm reports about $184 million in revenue. Vault ranks the program #27 on its 2026 Best Accounting Internships list and lists the class at 51 to 100 interns. On August 25, 2026, H.I.G. Capital announced a strategic growth investment in HBK that's expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. The firm says its partners will continue to lead it.

When Do HBK Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
HBK doesn't post season-titled internships. Its postings are plain "Tax Intern" and "Assurance Intern" listings, one per office, so the calendar has to be read from the posting text and the board. All 13 carry a Workday posting date of August 24, 25 or 31, 2026. That's a system date, so read it as the earliest they could have gone public. Each posting says spring internships run January through April, which puts the lead time at about four and a half months. No posting gives summer dates. HBK told Vault that "Applications are due in the fall." The next round of postings, for spring 2028 and summer 2028, is expected in late August 2027, projected from this one dated cycle.
HBK's 13 intern postings went up in one batch. The Workday posting dates read August 24, 25 and 31, 2026.
Applications are open for Tax Intern in ten offices and Assurance Intern in three. The postings describe the spring 2027 busy season and say internships may be full-time or part-time depending on the time of year. No posting has a deadline. The REVEAL 2027 Midwest conference posting is open as well.
The spring 2027 busy-season internship runs. Interns must be able to work at least 24 hours a week in the office for the whole program.
Summer 2027 internships are expected by office. The postings don't publish summer dates, and Vault describes a 12-week program. REVEAL Midwest, a one-day leadership conference, is on June 3, 2027 in Warrendale, Pennsylvania.
Postings for the spring 2028 and summer 2028 internships are expected, about four and a half months before a January 2028 start.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
HBK's hiring is rolling, office by office. None of the 13 postings carries a closing date. Every one ends with the same note: "application and interview timeframes and processes differ by office location". HBK's own line to Vault is that applications are due in the fall. Put together, there's no firmwide cutoff to aim for, and each office can stop taking candidates whenever its seats are filled. The postings have been up since late August, so some offices may be well into interviews. Spring interns start in January 2027, which leaves about three months. Apply to your office's posting now, and use the recruiting contact named on the posting to ask where that office is in its process.
Which HBK Internship Programs Should You Target?
HBK posts two tracks, and each office posts its own. The firm's Pennsylvania and Maryland offices have no intern posting today.
| Program | Offices posted | Focus | Pay on the posting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tax Intern, Ohio | Youngstown, Columbus | Federal and state tax preparation, tax research, a week-long 1040 training program | Columbus $25 an hour; Youngstown not listed |
| Tax Intern, New York and New Jersey | Melville, Paramus, Holmdel, Cherry Hill | Same tax program | $28 an hour (Melville, Paramus, Holmdel); $27 (Cherry Hill) |
| Tax Intern, Florida | Stuart, Tampa, Sarasota, Boca Raton | Same tax program | Not listed |
| Assurance Intern | Youngstown, Melville, Sarasota | Audit approach and tools, risk assessment, tests of internal controls, drafting financial statements | Melville $28 an hour; others not listed |
| REVEAL 2027, Midwest (not an internship) | Warrendale, PA, on June 3, 2027 | One-day leadership conference with panels, staff meetings and a community service event | Conference; no pay listed |
REVEAL is for accounting majors graduating in 2029 or later with at least a 3.25 GPA, and admission is rolling. It's open to students interested in the Pittsburgh, Erie, Hermitage, Meadville, Columbus and Youngstown offices, and it's the only student posting for the Pennsylvania offices right now. Every posting is on the HBK Workday board.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
All 13 intern postings share one requirements block:
• Class year and major: "Sophomore or junior candidate pursuing a major in accounting".
• GPA: "Preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; leadership experience, campus involvement, and relevant work experience are also highly valued."
• CPA track: "Actively pursuing or interest in pursuing the CPA designation".
• Skills: "excellent computer, communication, and interpersonal skills" and the ability to work well in a team.
• Availability: for spring, at least 24 hours a week in the office from January through April.
• Screening: you must pass an employment background check.
• Work authorization: the postings don't mention sponsorship. Vault's profile lists international students as not eligible.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff at HBK?
No. The postings say a 3.0 is "preferred", and the same sentence says leadership, campus involvement and work experience are "also highly valued". That reads as a firm that weighs the whole application. The hard rules are the ones written as requirements: the accounting major, the background check and, for spring, 24 in-office hours a week. Check that last one against your class schedule before you apply. Sophomores should also know what they're applying for. The postings say strong interns may be considered for future internships, so a second internship is the usual next step, not a full-time offer.

What Skills Does HBK Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Every HBK intern posting asks for the same baseline: computer, communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork and an interest in the CPA. The technical content depends on the track. The ten tax postings promise training in "federal and state tax preparation, tax research, tax laws, and HBK software" and a week-long 1040 training program. The three assurance postings name "analytics, substantive tests, and tests of internal controls" and drafting financial statements. Both tracks say interns perform "many of the same responsibilities as a first-year associate". No posting names a specific software product.

How Is Demand for Accounting Interns Moving Right Now?
Accounting intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 362 in August
For HBK applicants: HBK's board carries 13 intern postings today, ten for tax and three for assurance, and none has a closing date. Each says timeframes differ by office, so apply to your own office's posting and ask its recruiter which season it's filling.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each HBK skill maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project, which matters most if you're a sophomore with no experience to list yet.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Financial statements and analytics | Assurance postings: "Performing analytics, substantive tests, and tests of internal controls" and "Drafting financial statements" | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| Small-business data and schedules | Postings: clients are "owners of small and mid-size businesses"; interns on Vault describe bank reconciliations and expense schedules | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Client documents | Tax postings: "hands on training on how to prepare tax returns (individual and corporate)" | Pfizer Advanced: AI-Powered Document Insights & Data Extraction |
| Healthcare industry exposure | HBK's board lists a tax role in its Healthcare & Professional Services group | TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics |
The first row is the closest match for assurance applicants, and the second for tax applicants working with small-business clients.
What Is the HBK Application and Interview Process Like?
HBK doesn't publish a step-by-step process, and its postings say the process differs by office. This is what the postings and interns surveyed by Vault describe:
1. Apply to your office's posting on Workday. Tax and assurance are separate postings, and each office has its own.
2. Ask about timing. Each posting names a recruiting contact for questions about your application and the expected timeframe.
3. Interview. Interns describe a single interview call over Zoom. Reported questions: why this firm, why tax, and a time you faced a hard decision or a challenge.
4. Offer. One intern got a phone call with the offer within a week of interviewing.
5. Training week. Tax interns attend a week-long 1040 training program, and interns say the first week is all training on HBK's software.
The interview questions interns report are all behavioral, so our behavioral interview guide is the right preparation.
What Interns Say on Vault
Reddit has no first-hand threads about HBK internships, so these cards come from Vault's 2026 intern survey instead.
Tax interns describe preparing returns pulled from the firm's workflow system, plus bank reconciliations, expense schedules, trial balances and scanning client documents. One listed individual, partnership, corporate, trust and nonprofit returns. Another liked not just scanning papers all summer and took it as a sign the firm trusts its interns.
The interview was one Zoom call, followed by a phone call with the offer. Questions covered why the firm, why tax and a past challenge. The first week was all training on the firm's software.
Outcomes vary. One spring intern got a full-time offer and says many staff were once interns. Another was told a full-time role wasn't in the budget. Interns also say summer work can be slow and tax-season hours long.
How Do You Stand Out for an HBK Internship?
Three moves. First, apply to an office, not to the firm. Each office posts, interviews and decides on its own timeline, so pick the one you can commute to and apply there. Assurance postings exist in only three offices, so say early if audit is what you want. Second, clear the 24-hour rule before you apply for spring. Offices need 24 in-office hours a week from January through April, and a schedule that can't fit that will end the conversation. Third, show something beyond grades. The postings say leadership, campus involvement and work experience are "highly valued" next to the preferred 3.0. HBK doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate. Its postings say only that high performers "may be considered" for full-time roles, and interns surveyed by Vault report both offers and misses.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2027 HBK internship?
Most likely, but confirm with the office. Thirteen HBK intern postings were open on October 12, 2026, with no deadline. Their titles name no season. The text describes spring internships running January through April and says roles may be full-time or part-time depending on the time of year, so ask whether your office is filling summer 2027.
When do HBK internship applications open?
This cycle's postings carry Workday dates of August 24 to 31, 2026, about four and a half months before the spring 2027 busy season starts in January. HBK told Vault applications are due in the fall. The next postings, for spring 2028 and summer 2028, are expected in late August 2027.
Is there an application deadline for the HBK internship?
There's no single deadline. None of the 13 postings carries a closing date, and each says application and interview timeframes differ by office location. HBK's entry on Vault says applications are due in the fall. Treat it as rolling by office and apply before your office fills its spring class.
How much do HBK interns make?
Six of the 13 postings publish an hourly rate: $28 in Melville, New York, and in Paramus and Holmdel, New Jersey; $27 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and $25 in Columbus, Ohio. The Youngstown and Florida postings don't list pay, so ask the office. The postings call the figures good-faith estimates.
Can sophomores apply for an HBK internship?
Yes. Every posting asks for a "sophomore or junior candidate pursuing a major in accounting", which is earlier than many firms recruit. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred, not required, and the postings say leadership experience, campus involvement and relevant work experience are also highly valued.
How many hours do HBK spring interns work?
At least 24 hours a week in the office, from January through April. The postings ask you to confirm that before applying. They also say internships may be full-time or part-time depending on the time of year and the office. One intern surveyed by Vault describes a 40-hour week.
What is HBK REVEAL?
REVEAL is HBK's one-day leadership conference for accounting students, not an internship. The Midwest edition is on June 3, 2027, in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, with panels, meetings with staff and a community service event. It requires an accounting major, a 3.25 GPA and a graduation date of 2029 or later. Admission is rolling.
Do HBK interns get full-time offers?
Some do, and HBK doesn't publish a rate. The postings say high-performing interns may be considered for future internships and full-time employment upon graduation. Interns surveyed by Vault report both outcomes: one received an offer after a spring internship, and another was told a full-time role wasn't in the budget.
HBK's 13 office postings are open with no deadline, so apply to your office this month and ask which season it's filling. For the interview, a remote Externship gives you a finished financial modeling or data project to talk about, even as a sophomore.
