Last updated: October 2026
Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) has four paid, non-clinical internships open today, and each prints its pay: $18.50 an hour for Marketing and for two Risk Management roles, $18.75 for a Research role at its Center for Discovery and Innovation. The two Risk Management postings are labeled "Summer 2027" at 20 hours a week. In plain words: you apply in fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
HMH's job board lists 1,567 openings, and only five carry the intern flag, so the program is small. None of the postings shows a closing date, and an earlier IT intern posting was pulled while candidates were still being interviewed, so apply early. The IT Summer Intern postings had not appeared yet on 26 October 2026; last cycle they were already in interviews by 12 December 2025.

Extern's Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern, separate from the nurse externship HMH runs in its hospitals. Most run 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship builds the process and risk thinking behind HMH's Risk Management role, and the Health-Ade Consumer Behavior & Insights Externship practices marketing analysis. What Is a Hackensack Meridian Health Internship?
A Hackensack Meridian Health internship, on the business side, is a paid student role in risk management, marketing, research or IT at New Jersey's largest health network. HMH says an internship puts a student at an HMH location as an active team member on substantial projects, and that duration, hours and credit vary by role.
HMH calls itself a not-for-profit network with 18 hospitals, more than 500 patient care locations and over 36,000 team members. Its Early Careers page lists internships in IT, Marketing, HR and Research alongside clinical routes such as nurse externships and a New Graduate Nursing Residency. This guide leads with the non-clinical roles because they are the ones HMH posts as internships on its board. The residency is graduate-only and needs a licensed RN, so it isn't covered in detail here.

When Do Hackensack Meridian Health Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
HMH posts internships one requisition at a time instead of in a single wave, so there is no calendar to copy. The four open postings went up on 20, 21 and 22 October 2026. For the IT roles we have only indirect evidence from last cycle: archived copies show five IT Summer Intern postings captured between late December 2025 and early January 2026, and a candidate interviewed for the cybersecurity one on 12 December 2025. HMH doesn't print start dates, so a lead time can't be computed.
Four non-clinical internships are live: Risk Management (North and South, labeled Summer 2027), Research at the Center for Discovery and Innovation, and Marketing. None shows a closing date, and a Reddit candidate says an earlier IT posting came down mid-process.
IT Summer Intern postings (PMO, clinical informatics, biomedical engineering, cybersecurity and others) are expected, by analogy with last cycle. HMH hasn't announced a date, so check the intern filter weekly.
Interviews and offers continue as individual postings fill. Last cycle some applicants were still marked "under consideration" in January.
The Risk Management internships run at 20 hours a week. HMH doesn't print start or end dates, so confirm them when you interview.
Postings for summer 2028 are expected to start appearing around October 2027, projected from one observed cycle. Low confidence, because HMH posts role by role.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
HMH's postings are individual and rolling, with no closing date printed on any of the four. That means a role can disappear without warning. A candidate on Reddit thought the cybersecurity internship posting had been removed in December 2025 while others were still in the interview process. The Risk Management and Research roles are also single openings, not cohorts, so there's no second wave behind them. Apply in the first week a posting appears, and use the intern filter rather than a keyword search: searching for "intern" on HMH's board returns 11 rows, but only five are real internships, because psychologist and dietitian postings contain the word in their descriptions.
Which Hackensack Meridian Health Internship Programs Should You Target?
The first four rows are the non-clinical internships HMH posts today. The clinical routes are labeled so you can tell them apart.
| Program | Who it's for | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intern, Risk Management (North, South) | University students in risk management or related studies | Summer 2027, 20 hrs/week | $18.50/hr; event reporting, investigations, claims support; Hackensack and Neptune City; posted 20 Oct 2026 |
| Intern, Research (Endocrinology, CDI) | Undergraduates with 2 years of college and a 3.0 GPA | Term not stated | $18.75/hr; lab work under a physician mentor; Nutley; posted 21 Oct 2026 |
| Intern, Marketing | High school diploma or GED; college experience preferred | Term not stated; temporary | $18.50/hr; marketing tasks as assigned; Edison, hybrid; posted 22 Oct 2026 |
| IT Summer Interns | College students in IT, cybersecurity, informatics or engineering | Summer | Not posted yet (expected Oct–Dec 2026); pay unknown |
| CDI Summer Research Scholar Program | High school and college students aged 16+ | Summer; minimum 25 hrs/week, in person | Unpaid ("No stipends"); nearly 40 scholars a year |
| Nurse externship and Medical Assistant Intern (clinical) | Nursing students (10-week summer externship); medical assisting students | Summer externship; MA Intern posted Feb 2026 | Clinical placements, not business-side. 2026 externship window closed; 2027 dates not published. MA Intern posted at $17.50/hr |
| New Graduate Nursing Residency (graduate-only) | Graduating nursing students; licensed NJ RN required | 12 months | A residency, not an internship |
HMH lists these routes on its Early Careers page; the research program has its own page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Each posting sets its own gate, so read the one you want:
• Risk Management: "University Student majoring in Risk Management or related studies," with Google Suite, analytical skills and knowledge of legal and medical terminology.
• Research (CDI): "Undergraduate student with minimum of 2 years college completed and a minimum 3.0 GPA," with lab techniques such as cell culture; CITI/GCP training preferred.
• Marketing: high school diploma or GED and computer skills required; college experience preferred.
• Work authorization: not stated in any of the four postings. A Reddit candidate asked about OPT in December 2025 and got no answer, so ask HMH's early careers team (EarlyCareers@hmhn.org) before you invest time.
• Clinical and graduate routes: the nurse externship is for nursing students, the Medical Assistant Intern needs enrollment in a medical assisting school, and the Nursing Residency needs a licensed RN.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?
Only on the Research posting, which requires a 3.0 along with two completed years of college. The Risk Management and Marketing postings state no GPA. That doesn't mean they ignore grades, but nothing on the posting screens you out for them. If you're a sophomore without two full years finished, the Research role is closed to you, while the Risk Management role asks for a university student in the right field and doesn't state a class year.
What Skills Does Hackensack Meridian Health Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
HMH's four open postings share a few themes. The Risk Management roles want Google Suite, analytical writing and medical and legal terminology, for tasks like event reporting in the ONElink system, investigations and claims support. The Research role is lab work: cell culture, tissue staining and data acquisition on IRB-approved projects. Marketing lists "tasks as assigned." Four postings is too few for a frequency chart, so this section describes what each role names instead.
Note: Only four non-clinical intern postings are live on HMH's board, which is too few for a skills frequency chart. Skills above are quoted from the postings themselves.

What Is the Hackensack Meridian Health Application and Interview Process Like?
HMH describes the process in general terms on its Early Careers page:
1. Find the posting. Use the internship filter or the Early Careers page, and join the talent community to get alerts.
2. Apply online through HMH's career site. Apply to the specific posting; there's no general internship application.
3. Phone interview. HMH says the process is "usually a phone interview followed by an in-person interview with the hiring manager," and that steps vary by role.
4. Interview with team leaders. One IT cybersecurity candidate in December 2025 described an interview with two senior cybersecurity leaders, all behavioral questions, and a promise of results before the holidays.
5. Wait for a decision. Response times varied: some candidates were still marked "under consideration" in January.
Our STAR method guide covers the behavioral questions health system interviews lean on.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has one first-hand thread about an HMH internship, and it concerns IT. The other HMH threads we read were about drug testing and doctoral-level jobs.
A candidate for the IT Summer Intern cybersecurity role (IoMT security) interviewed with two senior leaders on December 12, 2025, got all behavioral questions, and was told results would come before the holidays. Another applicant thought the posting had been removed by December 21, and other applicants reported in January that their applications were still "under consideration."
How Do You Stand Out for a Hackensack Meridian Health Internship?
Three moves, all doable this week.
Match the posting's wording. The Risk Management roles ask for a risk management or related major and for medical and legal terminology. Mention the specific course or project that taught you each, and bring one example of writing an incident-style summary.
Show you know the New Jersey footprint. All four roles are in New Jersey, and HMH says it has 18 hospitals and more than 500 patient care locations. Name the site you'd work at and how you'd get there, since several roles are hybrid or in person.
Know your rate. HMH prints flat rates of $18.50 to $18.75 an hour on its postings, so there's no salary negotiation to prepare for. HMH doesn't publish class size or a conversion rate, and its alumni profiles are testimonials, so don't quote numbers you can't source.

How much do Hackensack Meridian Health interns make?

Can non-nursing students intern at Hackensack Meridian Health?

Is there a GPA minimum for Hackensack Meridian Health internships?

Risk Management asks for a university student majoring in risk management or a related field, and Marketing asks for a high school diploma with college experience preferred.
How many hours a week is a Hackensack Meridian Health internship?
The Risk Management postings say 20 hours per week for Summer 2027 and are part-time with benefits. Marketing is temporary without benefits and doesn't state hours. All four roles are in New Jersey: Edison (hybrid), Nutley, Neptune City and Hackensack. Confirm the schedule when you interview.
Does Hackensack Meridian Health have a nurse externship or residency?
Yes, both are clinical. The Summer Nurse Externship is a 10-week program where nursing students earn while learning; its 2026 window is closed and 2027 dates aren't published. The New Graduate Nursing Residency is graduate-only, runs 12 months, and requires a licensed NJ RN.
Is the Hackensack Meridian research scholar program paid?
No. The Center for Discovery and Innovation's Summer Research Scholar Program is unpaid and says no stipends are offered. It accepts high school and college students aged 16 and over, requires at least 25 hours a week in person, and takes nearly 40 scholars a year. The paid research internship is a separate posting.
HMH's four non-clinical internships are open now with no closing date, and the IT roles are expected soon. A remote Externship such as the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship can run alongside your application and give you a project to discuss in the interview.
