It takes undergraduates entering their sophomore, junior or senior year, with labs in cancer, genomics, population health, bioethics and computational biology. Geisinger also posts paid nurse internships and externships for nursing students, live since October 1, 2026, for a June 6 to August 14, 2027 start. What Is a Geisinger Internship?

A Geisinger internship is a paid student program at Geisinger, the Danville, Pennsylvania health system. Its job descriptions describe "ten hospital campuses, a 550,000-member health plan, two research centers and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine". For students outside nursing, the main route is SURP, an undergraduate research internship that ends with a symposium where students present their projects. Nursing students can apply to a separate, clearly clinical track: the Nurse Internship for underclassmen and the Nurse Externship for rising seniors. Geisinger also hosts more than 2,000 nursing students a year on school-arranged clinical placements, which are separate from these paid programs and aren't covered here.

When Do Geisinger Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Geisinger runs two calendars. Nursing internship and externship postings went up on October 1 in both 2025 and 2026, about 8.2 months before the June 6, 2027 start. The research program is on a winter deadline: applications for 2027 are due January 15, 2027, about 4.3 months before the May 24 start, and the 2026 cycle's deadline was January 16, 2026. Business-side student roles are less regular: the only data and IT undergraduate intern postings we found were captured from Geisinger's board in February 2025.

The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

The two tracks need different urgency. SURP has a hard deadline: Geisinger says the application and all required documents are due January 15, 2027, which means your reference letters must be ready, not just promised. The nursing postings print no closing date, and Geisinger sends a hospital-preference survey within a week of applying, so an early application also gets your preferred location in front of the team sooner. Because both nursing reqs have been live since October, we can't tell how long they stay open, so apply now.

Which Geisinger Internship Programs Should You Target?

Lead with the research program if you're not in nursing; the nursing rows are separate clinical tracks for nursing students only. These are the employer-posted student programs we found on Geisinger's own pages.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The rules differ by program, so match yourself to the right row before applying.

• SURP: students entering their undergraduate sophomore, junior or senior year, enrolled in a four-year college and not graduating before the internship starts. Pharmacy students in their first two professional years are encouraged to apply. It's an undergraduate program, not a high school one.

• Nurse Internship: upcoming sophomores or juniors enrolled in an accredited nursing program, with a high school diploma or GED.

• Nurse Externship: nursing students entering their senior year, expected to graduate in December 2027 or May 2028.

• Work authorization: Geisinger says it doesn't sponsor OPT for the short SURP internship and doesn't participate in E-Verify.

• Logistics: for in-person SURP work, students handle their own housing and transportation. Nursing orientation is mandatory (May 24 to 28 or June 1 to 4).

How Competitive Is SURP?

Geisinger calls selection competitive and says it looks at grades, test scores, recommendations and career goals. Applicants should have taken appropriate coursework for the lab they want, and students are matched to labs by their stated interests where possible. Pick a lab area that fits your major, because a computational biology applicant and a bioethics applicant write very different statements.

What Skills Does Geisinger Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We read too few live postings to count skills across Geisinger's student programs, so there is no frequency chart. What the program pages name: SURP's data-facing labs mention Python, bioinformatics, electronic health record data analysis, AI and machine learning, and statistical genetics. The nursing postings list direct patient-care tasks such as monitoring blood glucose, assisting with daily living and documenting changes in patient condition, which is clinical work outside what Externships train.

What Is the Geisinger Application and Interview Process Like?

Geisinger describes the application steps but not the interview, so the steps below stick to what it publishes.

1. Choose your track. SURP for undergraduate research; the Nurse Internship, Nurse Externship or RN Case Management Externship if you're a nursing student.

2. Apply. SURP uses an application link on the research internships page, with all documents due January 15, 2027, and reference letters can be sent to the SURP email. Nursing applicants apply on the Geisinger job posting.

3. Pick a location. Within about a week of a nursing application you receive a survey to name your preferred hospital.

4. Prepare for summer. Plan housing and transportation (SURP), attend the mandatory nursing orientation, and expect to present your project at the SURP symposium.
