Sutter Health's summer internship is a graduate program. The Administrative Health Internship takes first-year MBA, MHA, MPH, JD and dual-degree MSN students for a 10- to 12-week summer project with "competitive salary and housing provided," and its summer-2027 window is already published: 1 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, with no late applications. In plain words: you apply in December 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

Nothing for summer 2027 is open today (3 October 2026). The post-graduate Administrative Fellowship for 2027–28 closed on 15 August 2026, and the two per diem pharmacy intern roles that were live in late September have since closed too. Undergraduates should know up front that Sutter, a not-for-profit system with 57,000+ employees across Northern California, runs no structured undergraduate summer program.

Extern's Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern, unrelated to the school-arranged clinical externships that Sutter's own job postings mention. Most run 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week, so one fits before 1 December. The Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship builds the process-improvement work Sutter lists among past intern projects, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship trains the cost analysis its interns and fellows do. Explore all Externships.

What Is a Sutter Health Internship?

A Sutter Health internship, in the structured sense, is the Administrative Health Internship: a paid 10- to 12-week summer project for first-year graduate students, placed in settings "ranging from acute care hospitals and ambulatory care environments, to medical groups and foundations." Interns get one-on-one mentoring with Sutter executives and a real operating problem. Past projects Sutter lists include leading a team of directors to cut bed turnaround time, a financial analysis of Skilled Nursing Facility costs, and process maps for transfers from outlying hospitals.

Sutter is a not-for-profit integrated system with 57,000+ employees and 14,000+ clinicians across five Northern California divisions, and its 2025 annual report says about 3.6 million people rely on it. The internship feeds the post-graduate Patrick E. Fry Administrative Fellowship, and the alumni quote on the internship page comes from a former intern and fellow who now runs patient care as a senior director.

When Do Sutter Health Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Sutter publishes its dates instead of leaving you to guess. For summer 2026 the internship window ran 10 November to 26 December 2025 (archived program page). For summer 2027 it runs 1 December 2026 to 1 January 2027: three weeks later to open and 15 days shorter. That puts applications about six months before the internship starts. The fellowship runs on its own clock: the 2027–28 requisition was created on 1 July 2026 and the window closed 15 August 2026, so the window for the 2028–29 cohort is expected around July to mid-August 2027, for a July 2028 start.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

No summer-2027 Sutter track is open. The 2027–28 fellowship closed on 15 August, and the per diem pharmacy intern roles live in late September had closed by 3 October. You have eight weeks to get your one-page statement and resume ready.

Turn those eight weeks into a project you can name in your statement: the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship gives you hospital process-improvement work to point to.

Confirm you're in the first year of an eligible graduate program, add volunteer and community-benefit work to your resume, and draft the one-page statement of career objectives. Recheck the program page in November, since the dates moved last year.

1 December 2026 – 1 January 2027HARD DEADLINE

Administrative Health Internship applications for summer 2027 open on 1 December and close on 1 January 2027. Sutter takes no late applications, so submit before the holidays.

January – April 2027EXPECTED

Internship reviews and interviews for summer 2027 (Sutter doesn't publish this timeline). CLS training documents for the July 2027 cohort are due 15 April 2027.

Summer 2027

The 10- to 12-week internship runs with an executive mentor, salary and housing. Around July to mid-August 2027, the fellowship window for the 2028–29 cohort is expected to open, which is the natural next step for interns graduating in 2028.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard-deadline program, not a rolling one. Sutter's page says it plainly: "We are unable to accept applications after the deadline." The window is one month long and closes on New Year's Day, when most graduate students are away from campus, so aim to submit in the first half of December instead of over the holidays. The date also moves: last cycle opened 10 November, this one opens 1 December, so check the page again in November. Both required documents are short (a resume that lists volunteer or community-benefit work, and a one-page statement of career objectives), which means a late or rushed file is the only real way to miss. Fellowship applicants get even less room: the 2027–28 window lasted about six weeks.

Which Sutter Health Internship Programs Should You Target?

Only the first row is a summer internship. The rest are post-graduate or clinical training tracks with their own calendars.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The admin programs have strict gates, and they're stated on Sutter's own pages:

• Degree and year: the internship takes students in the first year of an MBA with a health or healthcare-management focus, an MHA, an MPH in health management and policy, a JD, or an MSN with a dual MBA, MHA or MPH. Second-year students and undergraduates aren't eligible.

• Work authorization: US citizen or permanent resident for both admin programs. The fellowship page adds that Sutter is "unable to sponsor work visas for this position currently and in the future."

• GPA: none published for the admin programs. The CLS training programs ask for 2.8 and child life for 3.0.

• Undergraduates: no structured summer program. Sutter occasionally posts a single undergraduate role (a Facilities Engineering intern in San Francisco in early 2026, now closed).

• Nursing students: no Sutter-wide student nurse externship appears on its career pages. Clinical rotations are arranged through your school on myClinicalExchange, and Nursing Assistant roles accept nursing-student training.

Does an MBA Qualify for the Fellowship?

Maybe, and that's worth checking before the next window. The fellowship page lists an MBA with a healthcare emphasis, a JD and a dual-degree MSN. The 2027–28 requisition was narrower: "Must be a recent MHA/ MPH graduate or enrolled in a Post Graduate Degree Program in Healthcare Administration or Public Health," plus about one year of relevant experience. The requisition is what you apply against. A Sutter employee with an MBA hit exactly this mismatch on Reddit in August 2026 and got no answer, so email gradfellowsinterns@sutterhealth.org before July 2027. The internship page has no such conflict: an MBA with a health focus qualifies.

What Skills Does Sutter Health Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Sutter doesn't publish a skills list for the internship, so we read the six Sutter sources that describe student work: the internship and fellowship pages, the 2027–28 fellowship requisition, the pharmacy intern requisition, the CLS training page and the live Chaplain Student requisition. Healthcare regulation and licensure come up most, in four of six, from the state relicensing survey an intern supported to pharmacy law. The admin tracks then share three skills: process improvement (the fellowship requisition names Lean and Six Sigma), financial analysis, and leading a team of people more senior than you.

What Is the Sutter Health Application and Interview Process Like?

Sutter publishes the documents but not the interview format for the internship. Here's what's confirmed:

1. Check the degree gate. First year of an eligible graduate program, US citizen or permanent resident. If you don't fit, the fellowship or a clinical track may.

2. Prepare two documents. A resume that lists volunteer or community-benefit activities, and a one-page statement of fellowship and career objectives. Both go in the resume/cover letter upload field.

3. Apply between 1 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 through the link on the program page. No late applications.

4. Interviews. The internship page lists no later steps. The fellowship asks for two recommendation letters (one professional, one academic) once you're contacted and unofficial transcripts at the final round, so line up recommenders early.

5. Summer 2027. A 10- to 12-week project with an executive mentor, salary and housing.

For Sutter hiring in general, one Reddit commenter heard back in two to three weeks with a phone screen first, while another waited three months for a rejection. Our STAR method guide covers the behavioral questions health-system interviews lean on.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit has no first-hand thread about the internship itself, but these three cover the fellowship, how applications move, and the nursing-student route.

An MBA graduate working at Sutter applied to the Administrative Fellowship, then noticed the application asked for an MHA or MPA and asked whether an MBA would still count. Nobody answered, which is why it pays to email the program before you apply.

Apply for administrative fellowships the summer before you graduate, and know that some, including Sutter Health's and Kaiser Permanente's, aren't on the NAFCAS common application, so you apply on the health system's own site.

An ER nurse says several ER techs in the department are nursing students or new grads, and advises being open to other units and night shifts. Others add that new-grad hiring is hard without a connection, and that Alta Bates often hires from its nurse residency.

How Do You Stand Out for Sutter's Administrative Health Internship?

Three moves, all doable before 1 December.

Write the statement as a project pitch. Sutter's own examples are operational: bed turnaround, nursing-facility costs, patient-transfer process maps. Show you can scope a problem like that and finish it in 10 to 12 weeks, with one example of something you've already measured and improved.

Make the volunteer line count. Both admin programs ask for volunteer and community-benefit activities on the resume. As a not-for-profit system, Sutter reads that as fit, not filler. List hours and what changed because of your work.

Know Sutter's footprint. Name the division or setting you want (an acute-care hospital in Sacramento, a medical group on the Peninsula) and why. Sutter doesn't publish class size or a conversion rate, but its alumni pages show interns moving into the fellowship and then into leadership, so say you're interested in that path.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Sutter Health internship?

No. The 2026 program is over, and the 2027–28 Administrative Fellowship also closed on 15 August 2026. The per diem pharmacy intern roles open in late September had closed by 3 October. The next door is the Administrative Health Internship for summer 2027, open 1 December 2026 to 1 January 2027.

When do Sutter Health internship applications open for summer 2027?

On 1 December 2026, and they close on 1 January 2027, according to Sutter's program page. Sutter says it can't accept applications after the deadline. Last cycle the window opened earlier, on 10 November 2025, so recheck the page in November in case anything changes.

Does Sutter Health have undergraduate internships?

Not as a structured summer program. The Administrative Health Internship is for first-year graduate students only. Sutter occasionally posts a single undergraduate role, such as a Facilities Engineering intern in San Francisco in early 2026, but none was open on 3 October 2026. Undergraduates can look at clinical tracks or other systems.

Who can apply to the Administrative Health Internship?

US citizens and permanent residents in the first year of an MBA with a health focus, an MHA, an MPH in health management and policy, a JD, or a dual-degree MSN. You submit a resume listing volunteer or community-benefit work and a one-page statement of career objectives.

Is the Sutter Health internship paid?

Yes. Sutter describes "competitive salary and housing provided" but doesn't publish the rate. For reference, its 2027–28 fellowship requisition listed $78,374.40 to $117,561.60 a year, and $90,147.20 to $135,200.00 in the Bay Area. The September 2026 pharmacy intern roles paid $36.00 an hour.

Does Sutter Health have a nursing externship?

Not one listed on Sutter's career pages. Nursing students do clinical rotations through their school on myClinicalExchange and can apply for Nursing Assistant roles that accept nursing-student training. After graduation, new nurses join the Sutter Nurse Residency automatically when hired, with no separate application.

When does the Sutter Administrative Fellowship open next?

Around July 2027 is the expected window for the 2028–29 cohort. The 2027–28 requisition was created on 1 July 2026 and the window closed on 15 August 2026, so expect roughly six weeks. Check the degree line on the requisition, which was narrower than the program page.

What skills does Sutter look for in admin interns?

Process improvement, financial analysis and leadership come up most in Sutter's program pages and fellowship requisition, along with knowledge of healthcare regulation. Past intern projects include a Skilled Nursing Facility cost analysis and patient-transfer process maps, so show you can scope and finish an operational project.

Sutter's summer-2027 window opens on 1 December and closes on New Year's Day. A remote Externship finished before then gives your one-page statement a real project to point to.
