The Government Accountability Office posts its student internships on USAJOBS in short, capped windows, and none of its paid internships is open today. The summer 2026 undergraduate analyst announcement opened on 9 December 2025 with a cap of 250 applications, the fall 2026 information technology posting lasted only six days (18 to 24 June 2026) with a cap of 50, and the one student posting open now is an unpaid Student Volunteer register that runs to 31 December 2026. Interns work between 400 and 640 total hours, and paid trainee announcements list hourly GS rates, such as $19.96 for an undergraduate analyst in Washington in the June 2026 posting. In plain words: you apply from about December 2026 to March 2027, and you start in May 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship builds the program-data analysis skills GAO analysts use, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship gives you budget and variance practice for audit-track applications. What Is a GAO Internship?

A GAO internship is a paid, temporary student appointment at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, which describes itself as an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress. Student trainees work 400 to 640 total hours with a mission team or operational office, learning to conduct audits and program evaluations, and some tracks place students in IT, library science or the sciences. GAO says student intern positions are available year-round in its mission teams, operational units and offices, and each term is posted as a separate USAJOBS announcement. A separate unpaid Student Volunteer register also exists. GAO is in Washington, DC, with field offices.

When Do GAO Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

GAO posts a separate announcement for each track and term, so there is no single deadline. The undergraduate analyst announcement for summer 2026 opened on 9 December 2025, about five months before a May start, and the specialist tracks followed through February and March. Fall 2026 was posted in June. USAJOBS shows the same rhythm in 2024 to 2025, with summer announcements from December through March. Treat the months below as expected, based on one clean cycle, and watch for any posting in between.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

No paid GAO internship is open. The only student posting is the unpaid Student Volunteer register, open to 31 December 2026. Fall 2026 paid internships were posted in June 2026 for August starts, so that cohort is already filled.

December 2026EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

Expected: the summer 2027 undergraduate analyst and management and program analysis announcements. The summer 2026 version opened on 9 December 2025 and capped applications at 250, and a December 2024 posting used the same timing.

January–February 2027EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

Expected: interdisciplinary, information technology, financial audit and librarian trainee tracks. In 2026 they opened between 22 January and 10 February and closed between 4 and 24 February, with the librarian posting capped at 100 applications.

February–March 2027EXPECTED

Expected: graduate science and engineering tracks (Biological Scientist, General Engineer, Physical Science opened 18 February and closed 4 March in 2026), then interviews in March. A 2026 applicant said they'd been told offers would go out in late March or early April.

May–August 2027

Summer interns start from about May 2027. Fall 2027 positions are expected in June 2027, based on the 15 June to 3 July 2026 postings for August starts.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

GAO caps its windows. The June 2026 information technology announcement said it would close at 50 applications, the librarian and fall analyst postings at 100, and the December 2025 analyst posting at 250, "which may be sooner than the closing date." Most windows ran 6 to 22 days. So an alert matters more than a calendar: apply in the first days, with your resume, transcript and proof of enrollment ready, and keep your resume to the two-page limit the announcements state.

Which GAO Internship Programs Should You Target?

GAO's student trainee tracks are announced separately, and pay depends on grade level. These are the ones seen on USAJOBS in 2026.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility comes from GAO's pages and the 2026 announcements.

• Citizenship: U.S. citizens only, for both paid and volunteer positions.

• Enrollment: enrolled at least half time in an accredited college or university, and you must stay enrolled in good standing through the internship or the appointment ends.

• Level: some tracks are graduate only. The Librarian announcement needed 18 to 35 graduate semester hours in library science for GS-7, or 36 or more (or a master's degree) for GS-9. The Fall 2026 undergraduate analyst posting asked for 60 semester hours or an associate's degree.

• Hours: a minimum of 400 and a maximum of 640 total hours.

• Screening: a background investigation and suitability determination, plus Selective Service registration for men born after 31 December 1959.

• Student Volunteer: at least 16 years old and a U.S. citizen enrolled at least half time, with a work permit if under 18.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

The announcements we read don't set a flat GPA minimum. The Superior Academic Achievement test (3.0 overall, 3.5 in your major or the upper third of your class) is one route to qualify bachelor's-degree holders at GS-7, so a strong GPA helps at higher grades even without a stated cutoff.

What Skills Does the GAO Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The announcements stress the same core competencies. Written and oral communication and teamwork appear in all four documents we read, data collection and analysis in three, and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint in two. Specialist tracks add technical subject competence, such as library science or biology. Analyst trainees learn to conduct audits and program evaluations, collect and analyze data, and write and present findings.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each row ties a GAO duty to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to describe in your resume and questionnaire answers.

What Is the GAO Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from GAO's how-to-apply page and the 2026 announcements.

1. Create a USAJOBS account and a saved search. All GAO jobs, including interns, are on USAJOBS, and GAO's own link filters by agency.

2. Apply to the specific announcement. Submit a resume, transcript, proof of enrollment and the questionnaire answers for your track.

3. Referral and rating panel. GAO Human Capital reviews applications and refers best-qualified candidates to a rating panel.

4. Interview. A 2026 applicant described an 80-minute panel of two to three people with mostly behavioral questions.

5. Offer and paperwork. An official transcript is due at orientation or within three business days, and a background check follows.

Write to the announcement's core competencies: analysis, writing and research for analyst roles.

What Students on Reddit Say

Applicants on Reddit mostly discuss the interview and the long wait after a short window closes:

A summer 2026 management and program analysis applicant was invited to an 80-minute panel of two to three people. Replies said the questions were mostly behavioral, undergraduates are assigned to a mission team after they're hired, and offers were expected in late March or early April.

A financial auditor applicant whose window closed on 13 February had heard nothing by early March, and other applicants said in early April they hadn't heard anything either. The posting shows how long the silence can last after a short window.

How Do You Stand Out for a GAO Internship?

First, be ready on the first day: with caps of 50 to 250 applications, a finished resume and transcript are your edge. Second, match the track and write to its competencies, which are analysis, writing and research for analyst roles and technical competence for specialist roles. Third, use the unpaid Student Volunteer register if you want GAO experience sooner. GAO doesn't publish applicant counts, class sizes or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 GAO internship?

No. The summer 2026 announcements closed between December 2025 and March 2026; the librarian posting, for example, closed on 24 February 2026. No paid GAO internship is open now. The next summer wave, for summer 2027, is expected to start around December 2026.

Are GAO internships paid?

Student Trainee internships are paid at hourly GS rates stated in each announcement, such as $19.96 for an undergraduate analyst in Washington in June 2026 and $25.57 to $33.84 for the librarian track. The Student Volunteer register is unpaid. GAO says it uses its own pay bands.

When do GAO summer 2027 internship applications open?

GAO has no published date. Its summer 2026 analyst announcement opened on 9 December 2025, and the other tracks opened between 22 January and 18 February 2026. Expect December 2026 through March 2027, and note that windows can close early at 50, 100 or 250 applications.

How many hours is a GAO internship?

GAO internships total 400 to 640 hours. The summer 2026 announcements were full time and started in May, and the fall 2026 announcements had August start dates. Interns who complete 400 hours may become eligible for conversion to a permanent position after their degree, subject to funding.

Who can apply to a GAO internship?

U.S. citizens enrolled at least half time in an accredited college or university. Some tracks are graduate only, and all paid positions require a background investigation. The Student Volunteer register takes applicants 16 or older. Check each announcement, because tracks set their own education requirements.

Is there a GPA requirement for a GAO internship?

The announcements we read don't state a flat GPA minimum. Superior Academic Achievement, defined as a 3.0 overall, a 3.5 in your major or the upper third of your class, is one way to qualify bachelor's-degree holders at GS-7, so a strong GPA can matter at higher grades.

Can I do a GAO internship remotely?

Not as a remote job. The 2026 announcements list Washington, DC, and some tracks name Atlanta, Seattle or other field offices, with telework as determined by agency policy. GAO doesn't pay relocation or travel. Remote is listed as No on the announcements we read.

Does a GAO internship lead to a full-time job?

It can. GAO says interns may be eligible for conversion to a permanent position after completing 400 hours and meeting degree requirements, contingent on budget and staffing. GAO publishes no conversion rate, so treat the internship as a strong credential and a possible path, not a promise.

Nothing paid is open today, so the work now is the alert and the application materials. Set your USAJOBS search for GAO, and if you want a finished project to put on your resume, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
