The Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) runs internships in three terms a year, spring, summer and fall, and it opens each term's application window only briefly. The spring term, February to April, lists an application period of November 2 to November 20. FPRI says applications aren't reviewed on a rolling basis, so there's no early-bird advantage and no late entry. Most internships are part-time and unpaid, with a limited number of need-based stipends awarded after selection. As of 16 October 2026 the summer and fall terms both show "Closed", so the next door is spring 2027, about two and a half months before the term starts.

What Is a Foreign Policy Research Institute Internship?

A Foreign Policy Research Institute internship is a part-time, term-based placement at a nonprofit think tank in Philadelphia. Interns are paired with a scholar or professional, get access to FPRI's events and can write a paper to be considered for its Intern Corner. FPRI's tagline is "A Nation Must Think Before it Acts". Its research is organized into three programs, Asia, Eurasia and National Security, plus initiatives on Africa, the Baltic Sea, and Deterrence and Arms Control. This page describes the internship only, not FPRI's positions. Summer interns also attend weekly foreign policy and career seminars with guest speakers.

When Do Foreign Policy Research Institute Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

FPRI runs three short windows a year, one per term. The internships page lists spring (February to April) with an application period of November 2 to 20, summer (June to August) as Closed, and fall (October to December) as Closed. The page gives no year for the spring window. It was updated on 14 October 2026 and the fall 2026 term is already running, so the spring dates read as November 2026 for the spring 2027 term. FPRI doesn't publish summer or fall 2027 dates, so we won't guess at them.

The fall 2026 term is running and every window is closed or not yet open. The spring window starts on 2 November, in 17 days. Build your single PDF now: a cover letter naming the internship type, a resume and, for research roles, a writing sample.

The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives a research application finished data work, though a cohort won't finish before 20 November.

Jun – Aug 2027

Summer 2027 term, if you're selected. Summer interns attend weekly foreign policy and career seminars with guest speakers.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a fixed-window employer, not a rolling one. The spring window runs 19 days, FPRI doesn't review on a rolling basis, and it won't review a packet that misses any required material or the internship type. So the right framing isn't "apply the first day". It's "apply complete, inside the window". A rushed, incomplete PDF is the one way to lose the cycle for certain.

Which Foreign Policy Research Institute Internship Programs Should You Target?

You pick an internship type on your cover letter. Two are open to apply to now; two are marked as not currently available.

The full descriptions live on the FPRI internships page and the research internships page.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

FPRI sets few formal gates, but it describes the selection as highly competitive:

• Education: applicants at all stages of study are welcome. Most interns are college or graduate students with extensive language, research, data analysis and study abroad experience.

• Nationality: no restrictions, and you needn't be a US citizen. FPRI doesn't sponsor visas.

• Application materials: one single PDF with a cover letter naming the internship type, a resume and a 3 to 5 page writing sample (research and editorial applicants only).

• Research roles: they often require advanced foreign language skills, data analysis skills, and study abroad or field research experience.

• Location: internships are offered in the office and remotely.

Does FPRI Have a GPA Cutoff?

No GPA figure appears on FPRI's internship pages. The stated filter is the packet itself: the right internship type selected, every document in one PDF, and for research roles evidence of language and regional experience. An incomplete submission isn't reviewed.

What Skills Does the Foreign Policy Research Institute Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

FPRI publishes no intern job descriptions to count, so the list comes from its own pages. The research page asks for advanced foreign language skills, data analysis and study abroad or field research. The writing sample requirement tells you that clear, edited prose matters most. The communications role, when available, names Adobe Express, Hootsuite and content management systems.

Note: FPRI doesn't post intern requisitions, so there are no job descriptions to count and this page shows no skill chart. Skills here are read from the research and communications descriptions on fpri.org, checked 16 October 2026.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Research interns are asked for data analysis, language and regional depth. No remote Externship teaches regional expertise, but these build the adjacent skills.

A remote Externship won't finish before the November 20 deadline, so use one as preparation for the next window. Language and regional experience still have to come from your coursework and study abroad.

What Is the Foreign Policy Research Institute Application and Interview Process Like?

FPRI's own instructions are short and strict:

1. Pick a term and an internship type. Spring 2027 is November 2 to 20. Name the type on your cover letter: Operations, Development, Communications, Editorial, Eurasia, Middle East, Africa or Asia.

2. Build one single PDF. Include the cover letter, your resume and, for research and editorial applicants, a 3 to 5 page writing sample most relevant to the internship.

3. Submit inside the window. Applications aren't reviewed on a rolling basis, and a packet with missing materials isn't reviewed at all.

4. Wait to be contacted. Because of the volume, only applicants selected for an interview are contacted. FPRI asks that you not contact the office for an update.

The page doesn't describe the interview format, so we haven't either.

What Students on Reddit Say

We found no first-hand FPRI internship accounts on Reddit. The few threads that mention it are general think tank advice, so we haven't used them.

How Do You Stand Out in a 19-Day Window?

Three moves. First, match the writing sample to the program: FPRI asks for the work most relevant to the internship you're applying to, so a regional paper for Eurasia or Asia beats a general essay. Second, show language and field experience, because the research page names them as common requirements. Third, make the packet flawless. It's one PDF, and an incomplete or mislabeled one isn't reviewed. FPRI publishes no applicant count or acceptance rate, so we won't estimate one.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Foreign Policy Research Institute internship?

No. FPRI's page shows its summer and fall terms as Closed on 16 October 2026. The next open window is spring 2027, listed as November 2 to 20. Summer 2027 dates aren't published, so check the internships page again after the spring window closes.

When do FPRI internship applications open for 2027?

Spring is listed as November 2 to 20, for a February to April term. The page gives no year, so we read it as November 2026. FPRI hasn't published summer (June to August) or fall (October to December) 2027 windows, and it doesn't review applications on a rolling basis.

Are FPRI internships paid?

Mostly no. FPRI offers part-time unpaid internships, and many interns secure university work-study grants. It also has a limited number of paid internship stipends, awarded by financial need after interns are selected. The stipend amount isn't published, so ask your school about funding early.

Can international students apply to FPRI?

Yes. FPRI states there are no restrictions on nationality and that you needn't be a US citizen. It doesn't sponsor visa applications, so you need your own authorization to take part, and remote research internships may suit you if you're outside Philadelphia.

Are FPRI internships remote?

Both are offered. FPRI says internships are available in the office and remotely, and its research internships currently allow remote interns who communicate with a supervisor by Zoom, email or phone. The events and development role is intended for people local to the Philadelphia area.

What do I submit to apply to FPRI?

One single PDF containing a cover letter that names the internship you want, a resume and, for research and editorial applicants, a 3 to 5 page writing sample. FPRI won't review your application if any required material is missing or you haven't selected an internship type.

Does FPRI review internship applications on a rolling basis?

No. FPRI states applications aren't reviewed on a rolling basis, so each term has a fixed submission period. Submitting on day one gives no advantage. What matters is a complete packet inside the window. Only selected applicants are contacted, and FPRI asks you not to call for status.

Which FPRI internship programs are available?

Research internships in Asia, Eurasia and National Security, plus Administration and Operations internships, are the two open types. Special Events/Development and Communications internships are listed as not currently available. Research roles often require advanced language skills, data analysis and study abroad or field research.

The spring window is short and fixed, so the work happens before November 2. Build a complete PDF now, and use a remote Externship to turn data and communications skills into finished work for the next window.
