What Is an Excellus BCBS Internship?
An Excellus BCBS internship is a paid, 10-week Summer College Internship Program at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, the nonprofit Blue Cross Blue Shield licensee for upstate New York, headquartered in Rochester. Interns work on department projects under a mentor, attend development workshops on business concepts, and give a presentation at the end of the summer. Excellus is part of The Lifetime Healthcare Companies, which its corporate overview describes as a $6 billion family of companies covering nearly 1.5 million members and employing more than 4,000 New Yorkers. Excellus also runs a separate Spring/Fall co-op cohort and, on its own schedule, a pharmacy intern role for PharmD students.

When Do Excellus BCBS Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Excellus posts its summer program as one fall wave and has moved it about two weeks earlier each year: October 7, 2024 for summer 2025, October 1 to 3, 2025 for summer 2026, and September 17 to October 2, 2026 for summer 2027. That puts applications about 8 months ahead of the June 7, 2027 start. A separate Spring/Fall co-op cohort runs on its own calendar: Spring 2026 roles went up in January 2026, so Spring 2027 roles are expected between late October 2026 and January 2027 (low confidence). Summer 2028 roles are expected from mid-September to early October 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 36 college intern roles across technology and cyber, data and AI, actuarial and finance, operations, legal, sales and community health. The last four (Benefit Plan Specialist, Community and Health Outcomes, Treasury and Finance, Corporate Tax and Compliance) were added on October 2.
Spring 2027 co-op roles are expected to post separately from the summer wave, based on Spring 2026 roles that went up in January 2026. Only a few data points exist, so check the board monthly.
Excellus says interviews and selections run throughout the academic year: a possible phone pre-screen, then phone, in-person, one-on-one, panel or group interviews and sometimes an assessment. Offers depend on a background check, drug screen and two references.
If it recurs, the Utilization Management Pharmacy Intern role for PharmD students who have finished their first professional year may post again; it last posted on April 7, 2026.
The internship runs June 7 to August 13, 2027, 10 weeks at up to 40 hours a week, ending with your final presentation. Summer 2028 roles are expected from mid-September to early October 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
None of the 36 postings lists a closing date, and Excellus says not all positions post at the same time, so the board changes role by role. Each role belongs to one hiring manager and has to be applied to separately. Excellus's hiring page warns that if you apply on the first day a job posts, it may take time to hear back, so a quiet inbox in October is normal. The risk runs the other way: interviews and selections continue through the academic year, and a role that's filled can come down without notice. Apply to your best two or three roles this month rather than waiting for the list to settle.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The 36 summer 2027 postings share the same core requirements:
• Enrollment: a high school diploma plus proof of continuous full-time enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.
• Academic standing: you must be in good academic standing; no posting names a minimum GPA.
• Majors: each role lists desired majors, for example mathematics, economics, actuarial science or statistics for the actuarial role, and HR, compliance, business or social sciences for College Intern I.
• Class year: not restricted; undergraduate and graduate students can apply.
• Work authorization: none of the 36 postings mentions visa sponsorship either way, so ask the recruiter before you rely on it.
• Logistics: housing isn't provided, remote work is decided case by case, and offers depend on a background check, drug screen and two references.

Is There a GPA Cutoff at Excellus BCBS?
Not a published one. All 36 postings ask only that you be in good academic standing, with no number attached, which is looser than many insurers' 3.0 lines. The filters that matter more are full-time enrollment and the desired majors on each posting, so match the role to your degree. Sponsorship isn't addressed in any posting, so international students should confirm it with talent acquisition early.
What Skills Does Excellus BCBS Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Every Excellus summer posting shares a common core: written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences, analytical and problem-solving skills, teamwork, organization, Microsoft Office, and a presentation at the end of the internship. The role-specific duty lists add the real differences. Data and actuarial roles add claims, enrollment and quality-data analysis, dashboards, trend analysis and Medicare bid work. Technology roles add Agile development, code review and testing. Cyber roles add time with the Security Operations Center and threat assessment teams.

What Is the Excellus BCBS Application and Interview Process Like?
Excellus lays out its steps on its hiring process page:
1. Apply to each role. Each application takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and LinkedIn apply is supported; there's no single program application.
2. Review. Talent acquisition screens applicants and shares qualified ones with the hiring manager, sometimes after a phone pre-screen.
3. Interviews. Any mix of phone, in-person, one-on-one, team, group or panel interviews, sometimes with a hiring assessment, over one or more rounds.
4. Offer. Talent acquisition makes the offer; the letter states your rate of pay and manager.
5. Clearance. Offers depend on a background check, a drug screen and two professional references.

What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has little on Excellus internships, mostly from Rochester-area students, so treat these as a few voices rather than a consensus.
A commenter answering an RIT student's question said Excellus is flexible, with a good culture and easy networking, and that its data science team is a great place to learn. The trade-offs: a fairly light workload and pay on the lower side.
Asked about summer internships in Rochester, one commenter said Excellus was interviewing for paid summer interns that spring, including some in marketing and corporate communications.
In a thread about changing careers, a commenter suggested looking at Excellus openings and called it a great company to work for.
How Do You Stand Out for an Excellus BCBS Internship?
Three moves. First, target roles, not the program. There's no single application, so read the duty list and desired majors on each posting and apply where your coursework lines up. Second, speak health-plan language. The postings mention claims data, Medicare bid filings, risk adjustment, utilization management and health equity; using one or two of these correctly in your resume or cover note shows you read the role. Third, plan for the final presentation. Every posting ends with delivering a presentation at the close of the internship, so bring an example of explaining analysis to non-technical people. Excellus doesn't publish an applicant count, class size or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Excellus BCBS internship?
No. Summer 2026 ran in June to August and its postings have closed. The open door is summer 2027: on October 5, 2026 Excellus had 36 college intern roles live for June 7 to August 13, 2027, all paying $18 to $20 an hour. None lists a deadline, so apply this month.
When do Excellus BCBS summer 2027 applications close?
No posting gives a closing date. Roles stay up until hiring managers fill them, and Excellus says interviews and selections run throughout the academic year. Because each role closes on its own schedule, the safe move is to apply in October 2026 instead of waiting for the spring.
How much do Excellus BCBS interns make?
All 36 summer 2027 postings list $18.00 to $20.00 an hour. At up to 40 hours a week for 10 weeks, that's about $7,200 to $8,000 before tax. A 2026 pharmacy intern posting for PharmD students listed $20.02 to $33.03 an hour. Housing isn't provided.
Where are Excellus BCBS internships located?
Thirty-five summer 2027 postings are based in Rochester, New York, and one sales role is in Buffalo. Thirty-two also list other Excellus offices in Buffalo, Utica, DeWitt, Binghamton or Albany. Remote work is decided case by case, and the Desktop Support role works from the Syracuse-area lab.
Does Excellus BCBS have a GPA requirement?
No posting names a minimum GPA. All 36 ask for full-time enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program and good academic standing. Each role lists desired majors, such as mathematics, economics, actuarial science or statistics for the actuarial internship, so match the posting to your degree.
Does Excellus BCBS have pharmacy or nursing internships?
Not right now. The only clinical student role found is a Utilization Management Pharmacy Intern for PharmD students who have finished their first professional year, last posted in April 2026 and now closed. No nursing-student internship was found. The 36 open roles are all corporate.
Does Excellus BCBS offer spring or fall internships?
Yes. A separate Spring/Fall College Internship program offers paid co-op roles. Spring 2026 roles posted in January 2026, so Spring 2027 roles are expected between late October 2026 and January 2027, with low confidence. None were posted on October 5, 2026.
Do Excellus BCBS interns get full-time offers?
Some do. Excellus's student page features former interns who are now full-time employees, but the company doesn't publish a conversion rate or class size. Every intern gives a final presentation, which is the clearest chance to show a manager your work before the summer ends.
Excellus's 36 summer 2027 roles are open now with no deadline listed. Apply to your best fits this month, and build a project story in parallel: a remote Externship gives you finished work to present in interviews.
