The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) hires interns three times a year, and each term has its own deadline, so you apply about three months before the term you want. Pay is set by degree level, from $18.40 an hour for undergraduates to $20 to $22 for doctoral students. Right now the term to watch is spring 2027 (January to May 2027): CBPP says its applications "will open in late September", and as of 16 October 2026 neither the CBPP careers page nor its application system shows an intern posting. The fall 2026 term is already under way.

What Is a Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Internship?

A CBPP internship is a paid, one-term placement at a Washington, DC policy research institute, open to undergraduates, graduate students (including law students) and recent graduates, and available remotely. CBPP describes itself as "a non-partisan research and policy institute" that works at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs affecting low- and moderate-income families. Interns work in program areas such as communications, health policy, housing, income security and state fiscal policy. The State Priorities Partnership, CBPP's network of state groups, hires separately through its own jobs page. This guide describes the internship program as CBPP publishes it.

When Do Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

CBPP runs fall, spring and summer terms, each with a separate deadline about 2.6 to 3 months before the start. The documented terms: summer 2025 had a deadline of 10 March 2025 and ran 2 June to 8 August; spring 2026 had a deadline of 24 October 2025 and ran 13 January to 8 May 2026; summer 2026 closed on 13 March 2026 and ran 2 June to 7 August; fall 2026 closed on 19 June 2026 and runs 8 September to 18 December. Every date below for 2027 is a projection from those cycles.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREHARD DEADLINE

Between terms. Fall 2026 is under way (8 September to 18 December 2026). CBPP's program page says spring 2027 applications "will open in late September", but on 16 October 2026 its careers page and application system list two staff jobs and no intern, and the spring page isn't live yet. Check the program page every few days.

While you wait, build policy-data evidence: the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship and Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior Externship are remote and project-based.
Late Oct – early Nov 2026EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Spring 2027 (January to May 2027) deadline expected, projected from spring 2026, whose deadline was 24 October 2025 for a 13 January start; the application page was already open by 4 October 2025. Low confidence on the exact date: the spring 2027 page was announced for late September and hasn't appeared. Review is rolling, so apply as soon as it posts.

~Mar 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Applications for summer 2027 expected to close around mid-March 2027, projected from deadlines of 10 March 2025 and 13 March 2026, with a start around 1 to 2 June 2027. The opening date for summer terms wasn't documented; expect it a few weeks to a couple of months earlier.

Late May – June 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Applications for fall 2027 expected to open around late May 2027 (CBPP said fall 2026 applications would open in late May) and close around the third week of June, projected from 19 June 2026 and about 20 June 2025.

Jun – Aug 2027

Summer 2027 term, expected to run about 10 to 12 weeks from early June, at 30 to 40 hours a week, remote or in person, paid by degree level.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Each term is a deadline, not a rolling door: CBPP publishes a term deadline and also says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so an early application is read earlier. The spring 2026 deadline came about three weeks after the page was open by 4 October 2025, which leaves little time. Only candidates selected for an interview are contacted, and CBPP doesn't answer status inquiries, so plan to apply early and not wait for a reply.

Which Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Internship Programs Should You Target?

CBPP has one paid internship program, but the positions change by term and "not all positions are available every semester". Fall 2026 listed 15 positions in these groups. You may apply to your top three areas.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

From CBPP's internship page:

• Who can apply: undergraduate and graduate students (including law) and recent graduates.

• Work authorization: international students are welcome, but you must have documentation of US work authorization and a US Social Security number as of the start date. CBPP doesn't provide financial sponsorship for visas or work permits.

• Location: remote or in person. Remote interns must be in the US for the whole internship; DC-area interns work a hybrid schedule with at least two days in person (Fall 2026).

• Application materials: cover letter, resume and transcripts (unofficial accepted), submitted through the application portal; email and mail applications aren't accepted.

• Program criteria: the program says it looks for candidates with an interest in public policies affecting low-income and diverse communities, with particular attention to candidates who have experience working with or in communities underrepresented in state and federal policy debates. The Communications posting says successful interns will have a commitment to CBPP's mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

No GPA is stated on the program page or the Fall 2026 posting we read. CBPP asks for unofficial transcripts, matches major to the area (for Communications it lists communications, government relations or political science, journalism, English and public relations), and asks you to apply only to areas that match your interests and experience.

What Skills Does the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

CBPP doesn't publish a skills list per area, so there is no frequency chart. The program page asks for research, fact-gathering, writing, analytic and computer skills and a willingness to do administrative as well as substantive tasks. The Communications posting adds written and verbal communication, the ability to work independently, and interest in media, journalism or digital communications. No software list is given.

Note: CBPP publishes one full position description we could read (Communications, Fall 2026) plus the general program page, which is too little for a skill-frequency chart. The table below maps the stated skills to remote projects.

What Is the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Application and Interview Process Like?

The application process is published on CBPP's internship page:

1. Open the current term's page. From cbpp.org/internships, click the term's "Intern Positions" link (for fall 2026 it was "FALL 2026 Intern Positions"). The spring 2027 page isn't live yet.

2. Choose up to three areas. CBPP asks you to limit your application to your top three preferred program areas and to apply only where your interests and experience match.

3. Submit through the portal. Include a cover letter, resume and transcripts (unofficial accepted). Mail and email applications aren't accepted, and you'll get an electronic confirmation.

4. Wait for an interview request. Review is rolling, only candidates selected for an interview are contacted, and CBPP doesn't answer status inquiries. Questions go to internship@cbpp.org, not by phone.

In the cover letter, CBPP's own tips say to explain why you want to work there and why you want the specific program area.

What Students on Reddit Say

Two threads: an r/DCInterns thread with first-hand applicant timelines and an r/washingtondc comment on pay.

A fall 2025 applicant who applied by the June 20 deadline describes getting an interview about two months after the deadline, in mid-August, a reference request the next day, and an offer the day after sending references.

Summer 2026 applicants say information on how competitive it's been was hard to find. One reports an interview offer for a state fiscal policy role in early April 2026, and another says applying to several areas produced just one interview.

One commenter in a thread about graduate-only internships calls CBPP a great place to work and says graduate interns get $20 an hour, which matches the official pay page.

How Do You Stand Out for a CBPP Internship?

Three moves. First, apply early in the window. Review is rolling and one applicant reports an offer arriving about two months after the deadline, so the early file is read early. Second, match your areas to your experience. CBPP asks for at most three areas and says to apply only where your interests and education fit, so a focused application beats a broad one. Third, write the cover letter CBPP asks for: why you want to work at CBPP and why you want that specific area, with personal or work experience tied to policies affecting low- and middle-income families. Conversion to full-time isn't published, and applicant counts aren't either.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 CBPP internship?

No. The summer 2026 deadline was 13 March 2026, and the fall 2026 deadline was 19 June 2026. The spring 2027 term was announced for late September but wasn't posted on 16 October 2026. Watch the CBPP internship page for it, then summer 2027, expected to close around mid-March 2027.

When do CBPP spring 2027 internship applications open?

CBPP says spring 2027 applications "will open in late September," but nothing was posted on 16 October 2026. Last year's spring deadline was 24 October 2025, so expect a deadline around late October or early November. That date is a projection, so check the program page every few days.

When is the CBPP summer 2027 internship deadline?

Expected around mid-March 2027, projected from deadlines of 10 March 2025 and 13 March 2026, with a start around 1 to 2 June. The opening date for summer terms wasn't documented. CBPP hasn't published 2027 dates, so confirm on cbpp.org/internships once the term posts.

Are CBPP internships paid?

Yes. Pay depends on degree level: $18.40 an hour for undergraduates, $19.00 with a bachelor's degree, $20.00 for graduate students, $21.00 with a master's or law degree, and $20.00 to $22.00 for doctoral students. The Fall 2026 Communications posting lists undergraduates at $18.00, so confirm in the posting.

Can I do a CBPP internship remotely?

Yes. CBPP's fall 2026 internships were eligible to be remote or in person, and remote interns must be in the United States for the full internship. DC-area interns follow a hybrid schedule with at least two days in person. Check each new term's page, because the work model can change.

Can international students apply for a CBPP internship?

Yes, but you need documentation of US work authorization and a US Social Security number as of the start date. CBPP doesn't provide financial sponsorship for visas or work permits. Remote interns also have to be located in the US throughout the internship.

How long is a CBPP internship, and how many hours a week?

A typical internship lasts one semester, about 10 to 12 weeks. The Fall 2026 Communications posting listed 30 to 40 hours a week during core Eastern Time business hours, with flexible schedules for time zones and classes. Some positions may be part-time, so check the one you apply to.

Will CBPP tell me if I'm not selected?

No. CBPP says that, because of the high volume of applications, only candidates selected for an interview are contacted, and it can't respond to status inquiries. Applicants on Reddit report interview invitations and offers arriving weeks to months after a deadline, so silence isn't a rejection.

CBPP publishes a deadline for every term, and the one to watch is spring 2027, announced but not yet posted on 16 October 2026. Check the internship page often, apply early once it posts, and use the wait to turn policy interest into a finished project with a remote Externship.
