BP Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Deadlines & How to Apply

Last updated: July 2026

BP is No. 25 on the Fortune Global 500 with $213 billion in annual revenue and roughly 93,700 employees operating across 60+ countries, one of the world's six "supermajor" energy companies. For the summer 2027 cycle (you apply during 2026–2027, you intern summer 2027), US internship postings are expected to open around August–October 2026, based on the documented 2026 pattern where applications closed by late October. And BP's process comes with a rule most applicants don't know about: you can submit only one application per academic year globally. File a second and BP withdraws it. That means your single shot needs to land on the right program, at the right time, with a resume that's already ready.

What Is a BP Internship?

A BP internship is a paid, 10-to-12-week summer placement that puts undergraduates into real roles across five career areas: Business, Digital, Engineering, Science, and Supply, Trading & Shipping, at BP offices in Houston, Chicago, Denver, and internationally. The reviews back it up: interns rate BP 4.5 out of 5 on Glassdoor, and the company sits on the Fortune Global 500, Forbes Global 2000, and FTSE 100. Interns earn $5,171–$5,700 per month with corporate housing included, and successful interns are considered for full-time roles in BP's structured development programs like the One Subsurface Development Program and the Trader Development Program.

When Do BP Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

BP's calendar follows a consistent annual pattern: US summer internship postings open in the fall, roughly 8–10 months before the May–June start date. The 2026 cycle's engineering postings carried deadlines around October 30, 2025, with start dates of May 18 or June 15, 2026. So for summer 2027, expect the window to open August–October 2026, with rolling review filling seats throughout. One exception worth knowing: BP's Supply, Trading & Shipping Sophomore Experience, a 4-day pre-internship program, recruits on a separate earlier calendar and fast-tracks participants to the next cycle's technical interview.

Now · Summer 2026you're HERE

No US summer 2027 postings are live yet on careers.bp.com, and the summer 2026 window is closed. This is the proof-building window: what's on your resume when the portal opens in August–October decides whether rolling review ever reaches you.

August–October 2026EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

US summer 2027 internship postings are expected to go live here, based on the documented 2026 cycle. BP fills on a rolling basis and warns it may close applications before the stated deadline, so week-one applications face the most open seats.

Late October–November 2026EXPECTED

Expected application deadlines. The 2026 cycle's Petroleum Engineer posting closed October 30. Remember: one application per academic year globally, so your single submission needs to be locked in before the deadline.

November 2026 – February 2027EXPECTED

Interview pipeline: situational judgement questionnaire, verbal and numerical assessments, HireVue on-demand video, technical interview with a hiring manager, and for some roles an assessment centre. Average time from application to decision is about 21 days.

May–August 2027

12-week internship, starting May or June. Engineering and science roles are concentrated in Houston; trading roles split between Houston and Chicago. Do the job well: successful interns feed into BP's structured full-time development programs.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

BP's official FAQ says it as clearly as possible: "Vacancies will be filled on an ongoing basis after opening and we may close applications before the stated deadline. Therefore, we highly recommend you submit your application as early as possible." Individual job postings reinforce the message: "This job may close before the stated closing date, you're encouraged to apply as soon as possible." Rolling means the class fills while the window is still open, and BP's one-application-per-year rule means you can't pivot to a second program if your first pick closes early. The math is simple: apply in week one, to the one program you've researched most thoroughly.

Which BP Internship Programs Should You Target?

BP organizes internships into five career areas, spanning traditional energy operations through to commodity trading and digital transformation. Which one should you pick? The honest answer is the one whose skills you can already show, because you only get one application per year and each career area interviews against its own technical requirements.

ProgramFocusDurationKey skills
Petroleum Engineer InternOil/gas field lifecycle, production optimization, wellwork12 weeksPetroleum/reservoir engineering degree, GPA 3.0+, production modeling, digital tools
Reservoir Engineer InternReservoir management, subsurface modeling, injection optimization12 weeksReservoir engineering degree, GPA 3.0+, subsurface technology
Supply, Trading & Shipping InternEnergy commodity trading, analytics, commercial, marketing & origination12 weeksFinance/econ/business degree, GPA 3.0+, market analysis, quantitative skills
Supply Chain InternProcurement, logistics, supply chain management12 weeksSupply chain/business degree, GPA 3.0+, analytical thinking
Digital/Technology InternDigital transformation, data science, IT infrastructure10–12 weeksComputer science/IT degree, coding, data analysis
Business Intern (Finance, HR, etc.)Strategy, financial planning, HR operations10–12 weeksBusiness/finance/accounting degree, analytical skills

See all five career areas on the official internships page. And note the early engagement track: BP's ST&S Sophomore Experience is a 4-day pre-internship program that fast-tracks participants to the next cycle's technical interview, and Future Leaders programs (Women in STEM, Black Heritage in STEM, Women in ST&S) offer additional pathways.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

BP publishes consistent requirements across its US internship postings:

GPA: cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The ST&S Sophomore Experience requires 3.3.

Graduation year: penultimate-year undergraduates. The 2026 cycle required graduating between December 2026 and May 2027; the 2027 cycle will likely require December 2027–May 2028.

Work authorization: eligible to work in the US with no restrictions. BP doesn't provide US immigration sponsorship for interns.

One application per year: BP processes only the first application you submit per academic year globally. Subsequent applications are automatically withdrawn.

Experience: no prior work experience required. BP's JDs explicitly state "no experience required."

What About BP's One-Application-Per-Year Rule?

Yes, and it's stricter than it sounds. BP's FAQ is explicit: if you make more than one application, they process only the first and withdraw the rest. That means you can't spray applications across Petroleum Engineering, Supply Chain, and Trading hoping one sticks. You get exactly one shot per academic year, globally, and that includes BP operations in every country. The practical implication: research BP's five career areas thoroughly before you click apply, because your second choice doesn't exist. If you're torn between Engineering and ST&S, the decision has to happen before the portal, not after. On the GPA side, 3.0 is the stated floor, but BP does offer a path for extenuating circumstances: their FAQ says you can "provide details of any mitigating circumstances along with supporting evidence," which are reviewed case by case.

What Skills Does BP Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Six 2026-cycle program descriptions and BP's careers pages paint a consistent picture of what BP screens for. Collaboration and problem-solving show up in every single program area. Safety mindset appears across all engineering and operations tracks, which makes sense for a company running offshore platforms. But the technical asks split sharply: Engineering wants petroleum and reservoir modeling, ST&S wants financial markets and quantitative analysis, and Digital wants coding and data science. What does that mix tell you? BP hires specialists who can work in teams and think about risk, then develops the commercial sense in-house.

How Is Demand for Energy Interns Moving Right Now?

Energy-sector intern hiring: July 2026

BP-specific compensation and recruiting data · 2026-cycle JDs and salary databases

Energy-sector intern pay leads the market: BP posts $5,171–$5,700/month ($31–$34/hr), and Glassdoor reports ~$35/hr across BP intern roles, roughly 50% above the all-industry intern median
One-app policy raises the stakes: BP processes only your first application per academic year globally, making program selection as important as timing

The pipeline is deep once you're in: BP's structured development programs (One Subsurface, Trader Development) explicitly feed interns into multi-year rotational full-time tracks

July 2026 is the final pre-cycle window. Supermajor postings historically concentrate in August–October, so the resume you have now is the one BP will see.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

And every skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project before the window opens.

How close is the overlap? The Yinan Zhao deliverable is investment analysis in the ST&S posting's own vocabulary, and every Externship above ends with a presented deliverable to the company, which is exactly the communication and presentation skill that five of six BP program areas list.

What Is the BP Application and Interview Process Like?

BP's funnel is structured and multi-stage, averaging about 21 days from application to decision:

1. Apply at careers.bp.com with a resume and online questionnaire via BP's candidate matching tool. Remember: one application per academic year globally, so choose your program before you click submit.

2. Online assessments. A situational judgement questionnaire (~100 questions) plus verbal and numerical reasoning tests (~25 minutes total). You get 7 days to complete them after the invitation.

3. HireVue on-demand video interview. Competency-based and behavioral questions recorded on your own time. You get 30 seconds of prep and 3 minutes per answer, up to 30 minutes total.

4. Technical interview. Live conversation with the potential hiring manager and team members. Competency-based questions plus a technical assessment specific to your program area.

5. Assessment centre (some roles). In-person or virtual; guidelines are provided ahead of time. Expect group exercises, presentations, and further technical evaluation.

There's no single standardized coding test across all tracks, but the situational judgement and reasoning assessments are consistent. Rehearse the HireVue round carefully: our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool runs the same time-pressure format. BP also hosts Tech Talk webinars on cracking technical interviews, worth attending if they go live for the 2027 cycle.

What Students on Reddit Say

How Do You Stand Out When You Get One Application Per Year?

Three moves, all executable before August. First, choose your one program deliberately; BP withdraws duplicate applications, so research the five career areas and commit before the portal opens. Second, apply in week one; rolling review plus early closures means timing itself is a filter. Third, lead with proof in BP's own JD language. A finished data-analytics or financial-modeling project answers the HireVue and technical interview with an artifact instead of a hypothetical. And remember that BP's assessment process, situational judgement, HireVue, technical interview, assessment centre, rewards preparation over polish. The 21-day average timeline means your prep window is shorter than you think.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

BP's peer set is the other supermajors: companies with comparable scale, similar engineering and trading tracks, and overlapping fall recruiting windows.

  • Shelllargest supermajor by revenue; broader consumer-energy and renewables portfolioCareers site
  • ExxonMobilUS-based supermajor; largest market cap in the group, strong upstream focusCareers site
  • ChevronUS-based, strong Permian Basin presence; similar fall recruiting calendarCareers site
  • TotalEnergiesEuropean supermajor with the most aggressive renewables pivot among the sixCareers site

All six supermajors recruit on roughly the same August–October calendar, and BP's one-application rule means choosing between them is a real constraint. Map the overlap before committing your single shot.

FAQ

When do BP internship applications open for summer 2027?

Based on the 2026 cycle, expect US internship postings to open around August–October 2026, with application deadlines in October–November 2026. BP has not posted 2027 dates yet, so join its Talent Community and check careers.bp.com regularly starting late summer 2026. BP warns applications may close before the stated deadline.

Is BP internship hiring rolling?

Yes. BP's official FAQ says vacancies "will be filled on an ongoing basis" and applications "may close before the stated deadline." They "highly recommend you submit your application as early as possible." Applying within the first week or two of a posting going live meaningfully improves your odds.

What GPA do you need for a BP internship?

Most US internships require a minimum cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The Supply, Trading & Shipping Sophomore Experience requires 3.3. If your grades fall below the minimum, BP says you can declare mitigating circumstances with supporting evidence, which are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

What is the BP internship interview process like?

After applying online, candidates complete a situational judgement questionnaire plus verbal and numerical reasoning tests. If you advance, you record a HireVue video interview with competency-based questions. Finalists get a live technical interview and may attend an assessment centre. The average process takes about 21 days.

Do BP interns get return offers?

BP says successful interns are "considered for full-time roles" in structured development programs like the One Subsurface Development Program. Glassdoor intern reviews note it's competitive, with a limited number of return offers relative to the intern class. BP doesn't publicly disclose a specific conversion rate.

What skills does BP look for in interns?

Engineering roles require a relevant degree (petroleum, reservoir, mechanical, chemical), production optimization knowledge, and comfort with digital tools. Trading roles need financial markets understanding and quantitative skills. All programs value safety mindset, collaboration, problem-solving, curiosity, and a passion for the energy transition.

Are BP internships paid?

Yes. US interns earn $5,171–$5,700 per month, which works out to roughly $31–$34 per hour. Glassdoor reports an average around $35 per hour. BP also provides corporate housing with furnished apartments and relocation assistance for moves over 50 miles, plus retirement savings opportunities.

Can I apply to more than one BP internship at a time?

No. BP processes only the first application you submit per academic year globally. Any subsequent applications are automatically withdrawn. This applies across all BP operations worldwide, so you can't apply to both a US and a UK role in the same cycle. Choose your one program carefully before submitting.

BP processes only one application per academic year and fills seats on a rolling basis. Use the runway to build proof: a remote Externship turns "interested in energy" into a finished project an August application can point at.
