Last updated: October 2026
Benchling, the cloud software platform that more than 1,300 organizations use for biotech R&D, runs a 10 to 14 week summer internship that's mostly in engineering. As of October 26, 2026 its job board lists 56 openings and none is an internship, so the window hasn't opened yet. Benchling's own FAQ says it typically posts technical roles by December and business roles by February, and that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until roles are filled. In plain words: you apply from about December 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
What Is a Benchling Internship?
A Benchling internship is a 10 to 14 week summer placement at Benchling, the San Francisco company whose cloud platform helps scientists organize data and collaborate on R&D. Benchling says the large majority of its internship positions are in Engineering, and past interns have also joined its Customer Experience, Product Design and Product Strategy teams. Early career roles are based in the Boston or San Francisco offices. Its recruiting page profiles interns from 2022 and 2024, including software engineer interns and a 2024 security engineer intern. Benchling doesn't publish a class size, an applicant count or a conversion rate.

When Do Benchling Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Benchling's own FAQ gives the calendar. It typically posts technical roles by December to hire interns and new grads for the following calendar year, and business roles by February for the same calendar year. That puts technical postings about 5 to 6 months before a May or June start, and business postings about 3 to 4 months before. Benchling's board shows only live roles, so we couldn't read prior-cycle posting dates, and these are Benchling's stated timing, not measured dates. Summer 2028 should follow the same pattern: expect technical roles from about December 2027.
Nothing is open. Benchling's job board listed 56 openings on October 26, 2026 (32 in San Francisco, 13 in Boston) and none is an internship or early-career role. Use this window to build the proof an engineering or product application needs.
Prep. Update your resume, pick one project you can explain end to end, and start checking Benchling's board weekly from late November, since technical roles typically post by December.
Expected: technical (engineering) internship postings for summer 2027, "by December" in Benchling's words. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until roles are filled, so apply in the first week a posting appears.
Expected: business-side internships (Customer Experience, Product Design, Product Strategy) for summer 2027. Past interns have joined those teams, but Benchling doesn't promise them every year.
10 to 14 weeks between May or June and August or September, in Boston or San Francisco.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Benchling reviews applications on a rolling basis until all roles are filled, so the first postings of the season matter most. It publishes no fixed deadline and no number of openings per team, which means you can't tell how long a posting will stay up. What we can say is narrower: technical roles typically go up by December, and the job board shows an opening only while it's live. Check it weekly from late November and apply in the first week. Business-side roles typically follow by February.
Which Benchling Internship Programs Should You Target?
Benchling describes one summer internship program and says where the interns have landed. The table follows its recruiting page, because no 2027 posting exists yet.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer Intern | Engineering, where the large majority of Benchling's internship positions sit | 10 to 14 weeks, summer | Boston or San Francisco. Software engineer interns from 2022 and 2024 are profiled. No 2027 posting yet, so no requirements to quote |
| Security Engineer Intern | Security engineering; a 2024 intern is profiled on the recruiting page | Summer | Not confirmed for 2027 |
| Customer Experience, Product Design and Product Strategy interns | Business-side teams that have hosted interns in past years | 10 to 14 weeks, summer | Typically posted by about February. Not guaranteed every year |
Benchling's university recruiting page carries the FAQ and the intern profiles. Roles are listed on its Ashby board.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Benchling publishes no eligibility criteria for interns, and no requisition is live to quote. What it does state, from the recruiting page read on October 26, 2026:
• Season: summer only. Benchling says it has no fall, winter or co-op internships at this time.
• Location: Boston or San Francisco offices.
• Who the timeline covers: interns and new grads. The recruiting page gives one timeline for both.
• Class year, GPA, major and work authorization: not published. They will be in the 2027 posting.

Do You Need a Computer Science Degree?
Benchling hasn't said. Most of its internship positions are in Engineering, and its recruiting page names no degree requirement. Copies of last year's posting circulate on job boards, but they aren't Benchling's own pages, so we haven't relied on them. Read the 2027 posting when it appears and check what it asks for.

Could You Get In at Benchling? Compare Your Profile
Based on 403 software engineering interns who started their first software internship between 2024 and 2026 (public LinkedIn profiles, aggregated). Six questions, under a minute.
Which summer are you applying for?
Recruiting timelines differ by class year, so we compare you with the right group.
Which group is your school closest to?
Firms recruit on campus in tiers. We match you against admits from schools like yours.
Is your major computer science, software engineering, data science or electrical engineering?
Almost every software intern in our data studied one of these. Other majors get in, but the coursework has to show elsewhere.
How many internships, externships or research positions have you held so far?
Count anything with a real employer, mentor or principal investigator attached. Retail and food service do not count.
Has any of that experience been tech-related?
Software, data, IT, engineering or a research lab. Any size of company counts.
Do you have at least one project on your resume or LinkedIn?
Personal, class, hackathon or open-source projects all count.

What Skills Does Benchling Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
No intern requisition is live, so there is no job description to read, and we won't guess a skills list. What Benchling does say: engineering is where most internships are, and past interns joined Customer Experience, Product Design and Product Strategy. Its platform serves scientists in biopharma, agriculture and materials, and Benchling says nearly half its team comes from R&D. SQL, data handling and an interest in how research teams work are reasonable things to build while you wait. Treat them as preparation, not as Benchling's stated requirements.
Note: No skill chart this time. Benchling had no intern posting on October 26, 2026, so there is no job description to count skills from. We would rather show nothing than copy a list from a job-board listing.
How Is Demand for Software Engineer Interns Moving Right Now?
Software engineer intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 790 in August
For Benchling applicants: Benchling's own job board listed 56 openings on October 26, 2026 and none was an internship, so its intern postings are still to come, expected by December.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill below maps to a remote Externship you can finish before the postings go up.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| SQL and data fundamentals | Engineering holds most Benchling internships; its platform organizes research data | SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games |
| Scientific and health data analysis | Benchling's customers span biopharma, agriculture and materials | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Product thinking | Product Design and Product Strategy teams have hosted interns | BeReal Product Management |
| Startup strategy and customer focus | Customer Experience and Product Strategy interns in past years | Lean Startup Co. Corporate Strategy Externship |
None of these Externships teaches Benchling's platform or a software engineering interview. They build adjacent skills: data handling, product reasoning and strategy. For coding practice, use your own projects and coursework.
What Is the Benchling Application and Interview Process Like?
Benchling doesn't describe its intern process on its own pages, so this is what is known.
1. Find the posting. Roles go on Benchling's Ashby job board, which the careers page links to.
2. Apply early. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until all roles are filled.
3. Interview. Benchling publishes no format. Community posts from 2021 and 2022 mention a first-round interview, and one poster called the interviews difficult.
4. Offer. Timing and details aren't published.
Benchling publishes no interview questions and no timing between steps.
What Students on Reddit Say
Two r/csMajors threads are first-hand, but they date from 2021 and 2022, so read them as background, not as a description of the 2027 process.
A student holding both a Benchling and a Meta internship offer listed better work-life balance, a smaller company and more impact as the Benchling pluses, and said the Benchling interviews were difficult. Replies leaned toward Meta for a stronger return offer, and one called Benchling a late-stage company.
A student asked how to prepare for the first-round interview for the 2022 internship. One commenter with a strong school and internship record said they were rejected before any online assessment, another with a 3.5 GPA and one past internship got the internship the year before, and a third guessed Benchling prefers juniors and seniors.
How Do You Stand Out for a Benchling Internship?
First, be early. Benchling reviews applications on a rolling basis until roles are filled, and it says technical roles typically post by December, so have your resume and one project ready before the board updates. Second, show you understand who the customer is. Benchling's users are scientists, and it says nearly half its team comes from R&D, so a project that handles research-style data, or a clear explanation of how a lab team works, shows fit. Third, pick your track: engineering holds most of the internships, while business-side roles typically post by February. Benchling doesn't publish a class size, applicant counts or a conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Benchling internship?
No. Summer 2026 internships ran last summer and are over. Benchling has no intern posting open today: its job board listed 56 openings on October 26, 2026 and none is an internship. Summer 2027 postings are expected from about December 2026 for engineering roles.
When do Benchling internship applications open?
Benchling's FAQ says it typically posts technical roles by December and business roles by February, for interns and new grads. For summer 2027 that means engineering postings around December 2026 and business postings around February 2027. Exact dates aren't published, so treat both as expected.
How long is a Benchling internship?
Benchling hosts 10 to 14 week internships in the summer, running between May or June and August or September. It says it has no fall or winter internships or co-ops available at this time, so summer is the only term to plan for.
Where are Benchling internships located?
Benchling says its early career roles are based out of the Boston or San Francisco offices. It doesn't state a work model for interns on its own pages, so check the 2027 posting for whether the role is on-site, hybrid or remote.
Which teams hire Benchling interns?
Mostly engineering. Benchling says the large majority of its internship positions are in Engineering, and that it has also had interns on its Customer Experience, Product Design and Product Strategy teams. Its recruiting page profiles software engineer interns from 2022 and 2024 and a security engineer intern from 2024.
How much do Benchling interns get paid?
Benchling hasn't published a figure for the 2027 cohort on its own pages, and no intern posting is live to quote. We left out hourly rates that appear only on job-board copies. The posting itself, once it goes up, is the figure that counts.
Is there a deadline for Benchling internships?
No fixed deadline is published. Benchling says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until all roles are filled, so a posting can fill before any calendar date. Apply in the first week a role appears, and expect technical roles to post by about December.
Do Benchling interns get full-time offers?
Benchling doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its recruiting page covers interns and new grads on one timeline and says early career roles are based in Boston or San Francisco, but it gives no percentage. Treat any rate you see on review sites as unverified.
Check Benchling's job board weekly from late November and apply in the first week a posting appears. While you wait, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to talk about in the interview.
