Last updated: September 2026
AutoNation is the largest automotive retailer in the United States: $27.6 billion in 2025 revenue, 271-plus dealerships under 35-plus manufacturer brands, Fortune 500 rank #166, and $4.84 billion in service and parts revenue alone, the most of any US dealership group. Its DRIVE2THRIVE Summer Internship Program is the opposite of that scale: a 10-week, full-time cohort of roughly 20 interns at the Fort Lauderdale headquarters, spread across finance, marketing and communications, IT, HR, credit, real estate and design.
So why read this in September 2026? Because summer 2027 postings are expected in January or February 2027, the window is short, and two-thirds of past intern interviews came through employee referrals. The work you do this fall decides whether you're a cold applicant or a referred one.

Summer 2027 DRIVE2THRIVE postings are NOT open yet; expect them January to February 2027 on careers.autonation.com. No published deadline, but a ~20-intern cohort fills fast. All roles are full-time and on-site at Fort Lauderdale HQ for 10 weeks. Minimum 2.5 GPA (3.0 preferred). No visa sponsorship, and CPT is explicitly excluded.
AutoNation's marketing intern interview has asked point-blank about Google Analytics experience, and its finance and credit tracks want data interpretation you can show, not describe. You have four months before postings open. The TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship builds the campaign and engagement-metrics work the marketing track values, while the Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy Externship produces the sales-data analysis and recommendation deck that finance, credit and IT interviewers ask about. Both are short remote Externships. Explore all Externships.
What Is an AutoNation Internship?
DRIVE2THRIVE is AutoNation's single, centralized summer internship: 10 weeks, full-time, on-site at corporate headquarters in Fort Lauderdale. The company's LinkedIn announcement calls it a "high-energy, 10-week experience" built around meaningful department projects, professional development workshops, networking events with leaders, mentorship, and philanthropy tied to the DRVPNK cancer research initiative. The summer 2025 cohort was 20 interns across HR, marketing, communications, finance, IT, design and real estate.
And the setting matters. AutoNation is a retailer and service business, not a manufacturer: new and used vehicle sales, service and parts, finance and insurance, and digital commerce across 271-plus stores. Interns sit at the corporate center of that, which is a very different experience from the dealership floor that dominates the company's public reviews.

When Do AutoNation Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
AutoNation runs a standard corporate cycle, not a finance-style early one: postings appear in January or February for a late-May start, a lead time of four to six months. That puts the summer 2027 window about four months away from a September 2026 reader.
But the cohort is small and referrals dominate, so the useful part of the calendar is the prep stretch before the posting, not the week after it.
Applications for summer 2027 aren't open yet. The summer 2026 cohort finished in early August, and the next DRIVE2THRIVE postings are expected in January or February 2027. With ~20 seats and 67% of past intern interviews coming through employee referrals, this is the time to build skills and find a referrer, not to refresh the careers page.
Prep window. Pick one track (finance, marketing, IT, HR, credit or real estate) and tailor your resume to it. Learn AutoNation's retail model and the DRVPNK mission. Connect with AutoNation employees and former DRIVE2THRIVE interns on LinkedIn and ask for a conversation; that's where referrals come from.
Postings expected on careers.autonation.com (summer 2026 roles went live in early 2026). Short window: apply within the first few days, complete the screening questions and profile, and watch for on-campus interview days at South Florida schools such as Nova Southeastern, where AutoNation has interviewed on campus in past cycles.
Phone screen with a recruiter, then a behavioral interview with the hiring manager (expected). Glassdoor's intern reports show an average of 16 days from application to hire, "easy" difficulty and 100% positive experiences across a small sample. Background check and drug test may follow the offer.
The 10-week DRIVE2THRIVE internship at Fort Lauderdale HQ: department projects, workshops, leadership networking, a dealership visit and DRVPNK philanthropy events. Full-time conversion is "based on performance," with no published rate.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
AutoNation publishes no deadline, and that's exactly why timing matters. With roughly 20 seats across eight or so tracks, each department may be filling one or two spots, and Glassdoor's 16-day average from application to hire means offers can go out before a late applicant has even been screened.
So treat the first week of postings as the deadline. And do the referral work before January, because a cold application in February is competing against candidates who already have an internal champion.
Which AutoNation Internship Programs Should You Target?
DRIVE2THRIVE is one program with department tracks. These eight are documented across the 2025 and 2026 cohorts; not every track is posted every summer.
| Track | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finance Intern | Financial analysis, reporting, budgeting | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Excel, financial modeling, analytical thinking |
| Marketing / Communications Intern | Brand strategy, campaign development, content, Google Analytics | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Digital marketing, content strategy, communication |
| Information Technology Intern | Systems support, technology projects, digital transformation | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Technical proficiency, Microsoft Office, problem-solving |
| HR / Talent Management Intern | Talent acquisition, employee engagement, HR operations | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Communication, organization, interpersonal skills |
| Credit Intern | Credit analysis, risk assessment, lifecycle study of the finance portfolio | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Financial analysis, data interpretation, attention to detail |
| Real Estate Intern (CRES) | Property analysis, real estate investment, portfolio management | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Analytical thinking, Excel, real estate fundamentals |
| Design Intern | Visual design, brand collateral, creative projects | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Design software, creativity, brand consistency |
| Legal Intern | Legal research, compliance, corporate governance | 10 weeks, Fort Lauderdale | Legal research, writing, analysis |
Supply chain management and procurement tracks appeared at a 2019 on-campus interview day but haven't been confirmed in recent cohorts. Check which tracks are live on the AutoNation job search page once postings appear.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The requirements come from the summer 2026 credit intern JD and Vault's program profile, and they apply across tracks.
• Enrollment: currently enrolled in a four-year degree program; master's students also accepted
• Major: related to the internship track (finance, marketing, IT, HR and so on); Vault lists 30-plus eligible majors
• GPA: minimum 2.5; above 3.0 preferred; a transcript will be requested
• Work authorization: eligible to work in the US with no employment restrictions for the full internship
• Sponsorship: none. AutoNation states it cannot sponsor employment authorization for the program, including students on CPT
• Location: able to commute and work full-time on-site at Fort Lauderdale HQ for all 10 weeks

Why Does the CPT Exclusion Matter So Much?
Most corporate internships accept F-1 students working under Curricular Practical Training, because CPT needs no employer sponsorship. AutoNation's JD rules it out anyway, which narrows the pool to US citizens, permanent residents and others with unrestricted authorization.
So if you're an international student, don't spend January on this application. And if you're a domestic student with a 2.7 GPA, do: the 2.5 floor is real, the 3.0 is a preference, and the interview weighs motivation and industry curiosity heavily.
What Skills Does AutoNation Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
What does AutoNation actually screen for? We worked from four sources: the summer 2026 credit intern JD, the summer 2026 marketing intern JD, Vault's program profile, and Glassdoor's intern interview reports. Communication and organization appear in all four. Interpersonal skills, Office and analytics tools, and "willingness to learn, with a strong sense of curiosity and adaptability" appear in three.
But the interview adds a wrinkle the JDs don't: Vault's question bank includes "What experience do you have in the auto industry?" and a marketing candidate was asked directly about Google Analytics. Retail curiosity counts even for the finance and IT tracks.
What AutoNation looks for in interns
Skills across 4 AutoNation intern & analyst job descriptions · Four AutoNation sources: two summer 2026 intern JDs (credit, marketing), Vault program profile, Glassdoor intern interview reports; August 2026
Count = number of the four sources that name the skill. No summer 2027 JDs were live at research time, so this reflects the 2026 cycle.
Automotive retail intern hiring right now: September 2026
Across US sales intern postings tracked this month · aggregate market data, all employers
September 2026 is the fall recruiting wave: sales intern postings jumped 167.5% from August, Seats fill on rolling review, so the applications that go in this month meet the widest pool of open roles.
Method: aggregate analysis of US sales intern postings on Adzuna's US index, August average versus September 2026 to date (3 collection days). Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
And three of those skills map to remote Externships you can complete before the January postings.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign strategy & engagement analytics | Marketing intern JD: brand strategy, campaign development, Google Analytics; interview question on Google Analytics experience | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy |
| Data analysis & strategic recommendations | Credit intern JD: data interpretation, lifecycle study of the finance portfolio; finance track analytics | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Workforce & operations analytics | HR / talent management intern track: employee engagement, HR operations across 25,000 employees | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
Each Externship runs 4–11 weeks (most commonly 8), so one started in September is finished well before postings appear. AutoNation isn't an Extern partner; the value is a concrete project to describe when the hiring manager asks which one you're proudest of.

What Is the AutoNation Application and Interview Process Like?
The process is short and light on assessment. Glassdoor's intern reports describe a phone screen and a manager interview, with some candidates hired on the spot.
So the differentiator is preparation and a referral, not test scores.
1. Apply online at careers.autonation.com: answer the screening questions, upload your resume, and complete your candidate profile. Target the one track that matches your major.
2. Phone screen (15–30 minutes). A recruiter covers your background, academics and basics like Microsoft Office comfort. One candidate described "basic questions about previous work and experience with computers."
3. Hiring manager interview (30–60 minutes), in person or by video, behavioral and experience-based: why AutoNation, the project you're proudest of, your auto industry exposure, a professional hardship you overcame. Marketing candidates may be asked about Google Analytics.
4. Background check and drug test after the offer, reported by a minority of Glassdoor intern candidates.
5. Offer. Average 16 days from application to offer across Glassdoor's three intern reports.
Glassdoor's intern sample is tiny (three interviews, one review), so take the "easy" rating as a sketch. The overall company interview experience is 53% positive with 2.3/5 difficulty. See Vault's AutoNation internship profile for the question bank.
What Students on Reddit Say
There's no Reddit thread about DRIVE2THRIVE itself. What Reddit has is years of dealership-floor discussion in r/askcarsales, r/CarSalesTraining and r/mechanics, which is useful context as long as you remember it describes stores, not the Fort Lauderdale headquarters.
And the pattern is consistent: strong training and benefits, heavy corporate process.
A prospective hire asked what working at AutoNation is like. Commenters credited the company with great training and benefits, then complained about schedules and micromanagement, with several describing corporate oversight as both a strength (consistent processes) and a weakness (less autonomy than an independent store).
A candidate who had just interviewed asked for feedback. One reply said their own store experience was bad enough that they'd never go back and cited heavy management turnover, while others pushed back that experience varies enormously by store and region.
In a thread about dealership chains, a technician who had worked at many AutoNation stores said the company treats techs well and that corporate seems to be shifting toward viewing technicians as people worth keeping.
How Do You Stand Out at AutoNation?
First, get a referral. Two-thirds of Glassdoor's intern interviewees got there through an employee referral, and with ~20 seats a cold application is competing against candidates who already have an internal champion. Connect with AutoNation employees and past DRIVE2THRIVE interns on LinkedIn, go to career fairs at South Florida schools where AutoNation recruits, and ask for a 15-minute conversation before January.
Second, talk about AutoNation's business, not "the auto industry." AutoNation sells and services cars; it doesn't build them. Know the four revenue engines (new vehicles, used vehicles, service and parts at $4.84 billion, and finance and insurance) and connect your track to one of them. A finance candidate who can explain how dealership floor-plan financing works is rare.
And third, bring DRVPNK into your "why AutoNation" answer with a specific, personal reason. The cancer research initiative appears in every JD and every cohort post, and a small cohort working next to senior leaders is chosen partly on cultural fit. Is that soft? Maybe, but it's the part of the interview most candidates leave generic.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
Which other retailers should be on the same list? The obvious set is the other large dealership groups, plus the auto-adjacent retailers that recruit business majors on the same calendar.
But only one direct dealership-group competitor has a published guide so far.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 AutoNation internship?
No. The summer 2026 DRIVE2THRIVE cohort started in late May 2026 and finished in early August, and those postings closed months ago. The next opening is summer 2027, with postings expected in January or February 2027 on careers.autonation.com. Use the fall to line up a referral and a track-specific project.
When do AutoNation DRIVE2THRIVE applications open for summer 2027?
Expected January to February 2027, based on when summer 2026 roles went live in early 2026 and on past on-campus interview days in February. AutoNation publishes no deadline, but with roughly 20 seats and a 16-day average time to hire, apply within the first few days of a posting appearing.
How much does an AutoNation internship pay?
All DRIVE2THRIVE roles are paid, but AutoNation publishes no standard rate. Indeed's community reports average $24.43 an hour for "paid intern" across seven submissions, with IT and real estate interns at $20. Glassdoor's estimate is higher at about $35, likely mixing corporate and dealership roles. The credit intern JD also lists health insurance eligibility and a 401(k) match.
Where are AutoNation internships located?
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at corporate headquarters, and nowhere else. The JD requires the ability to commute and work full-time on-site for the entire 10 weeks, and no remote or hybrid option is documented. There's no housing or relocation assistance either, so out-of-state candidates should budget for a South Florida summer sublet.
Does AutoNation sponsor visas for interns?
No. AutoNation states it cannot sponsor employment authorization for the internship program, and it explicitly excludes students on CPT, which most corporate programs accept. Only candidates already eligible to work in the US with no restrictions qualify. International students should look at peers with more open policies rather than apply here.
What is the AutoNation intern interview process like?
A recruiter phone screen on your background and computer skills, then a behavioral interview with the hiring manager covering motivation, your proudest project, auto industry curiosity and a hardship you overcame. Glassdoor's three intern reports show "easy" difficulty, 100% positive experiences and an average of 16 days from application to offer.
How competitive is the AutoNation DRIVE2THRIVE internship?
Competitive because it's small: about 20 interns per summer at a Fortune 500 company with 25,000 employees. AutoNation publishes no applicant count or acceptance rate. What's documented is that 67% of Glassdoor's intern interviewees came through an employee referral, so networking and South Florida campus events are the practical lever.
Can an AutoNation internship lead to a full-time job?
It can, but no rate is published. The credit intern JD lists "potential opportunity for future full-time positions based on performance," and the company advertises a career advancement program for upskilling employees. Treat the 10 weeks as an extended interview: a 2022 real estate intern called it "my favorite internship by far," though they shared no conversion outcome.
AutoNation's summer 2027 postings are about four months out, the cohort is tiny, and referrals drive the interview list. Spend this fall finishing a remote Externship that gives you a marketing or analytics project worth describing, then find your referrer before January. Explore all Externships.
