Autoliv is the world's largest automotive safety supplier. Its airbags, seatbelts and steering wheels sit in vehicles from nearly every major automaker, and the company says its products saved 40,000 lives in 2025. With about 64,000 employees in 25 countries and $10.4 billion in revenue, it runs paid summer internships in engineering, IT and finance at its Auburn Hills, Michigan and Ogden, Utah technical centers. Community-reported intern pay on Glassdoor averages about $36 an hour across 15 submissions.
But here's the part most guides get wrong: Autoliv doesn't recruit in the fall. Summer 2027 postings are expected in February or March 2027 with deadlines between late March and early May, so the job you'll apply for isn't on the board yet.

Summer 2027 postings are NOT open yet. Autoliv posts late winter and closes fast: prior cycles set hard deadlines of March 31 (2023) and April 7 to May 9 (2025) for a June start. Expect postings around February to March 2027. Four year-round intern roles (GenAI, Operational Financial Analyst, Internal Control, Business Analyst/PMO) are live now.
Autoliv's engineering JDs ask for data analysis alongside CAD and lab work, and its finance and PMO roles are analysis from top to bottom. You have five months before postings open, which is enough to finish the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship and walk in with an operations analytics project that mirrors the plant-floor problems Autoliv interns work on. If the GenAI track is your target, the Wayfair AI Agent Engineering for Business Intelligence Externship covers the prototype-and-present loop that JD describes. Both are short remote Externships. What Is an Autoliv Internship?
Autoliv's US internship program places students on real engineering, IT and finance projects at its two American technical centers. The company runs two formats: summer internships of roughly 10 to 12 weeks from June to August, and year-round internships of up to a year, part-time during the academic term. JDs promise mentorship from experienced engineers, project work "with minimal oversight," recognition awards, company events and university discounts. Founded in Sweden in 1953 and listed on the NYSE (ALV), Autoliv holds about 42% of the global passive safety market and operates 13 technical centers with 20 test tracks worldwide.
So what does an intern actually do? The Application Engineering JD is the clearest: material-level testing (differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy, melt flow analysis), sample builds, teardowns, data analysis in Microsoft Office tools, and written test reports. Not busywork.

When Do Autoliv Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Autoliv is a late-window recruiter. Where big tech and finance post 8 to 17 months ahead, Autoliv posts only three to five months before the June start, then closes with a hard deadline. So why does a reader in September 2026 see an empty summer board? Because the 2027 requisitions don't exist yet.
But empty doesn't mean idle. Four year-round intern roles are live right now, and the prep you do this fall is what makes a two-week application window survivable.
Summer 2027 postings aren't live yet; Autoliv typically posts in late winter for the same summer. Four year-round intern roles are open now on the US careers portal: GenAI (Auburn Hills, 1-year part-time), Operational Financial Analyst (Ogden), Internal Control and Business Analyst/PMO (Auburn Hills). Use the wait to build CAD, materials-testing and data-analysis evidence.
Prep window. Create a profile on Autoliv's Teamtailor careers portal and set job alerts. Tailor your resume to automotive safety: CAD projects, materials or polymer coursework, manufacturing exposure. Glassdoor reports that 50% of intern interviews came through campus recruiting, so find Autoliv's info sessions at schools near Ogden and Auburn Hills.
Summer 2027 postings expected to go live for a June 2027 start. Prior cycles set hard deadlines: March 31 for summer 2023, April 7 (IT) and May 9 (engineering) for summer 2025. Prosple's listings warned the role "may close before the stated closing date." Apply within the first two weeks of a posting appearing.
Interviews and offers (expected). Glassdoor's intern reports show an average of nine days from application to hire, 75% one-on-one and 25% panel. Expect "tell me about yourself," questions about your projects, and technical fundamentals like strength of materials, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.
The internship: 10 to 12 weeks, full-time and on-site at Auburn Hills or Ogden. Mentor-led project work, teardowns, test reports, and exposure to passive safety R&D. Summer 2025 starts ran June 2 to June 30.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Autoliv's window is short, not rolling. The 2023 announcement said juniors and seniors should apply "no later than March 31," and the 2025 listings carried April 7 and May 9 cutoffs with a warning that roles may close early. That's a six-to-ten-week opening for a company with small intern cohorts.
So what's the play? The first two weeks after a posting appears are the whole game. Glassdoor's nine-day average from application to hire means seats can be filled before the published deadline arrives. Set the alert now, have the resume ready in January, and submit the day the posting goes up.
Which Autoliv Internship Programs Should You Target?
Autoliv doesn't publish a program brochure. These seven tracks come from live postings on its US careers portal plus prior-cycle JDs on Prosple and Talent.com.

The first three are the summer roles this page targets for 2027; the last four are live now in year-round or school-year formats. See what's open today on the Autoliv US careers portal.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Autoliv's bar is lower on paper than most automotive OEMs, with no GPA floor.
And its visa policy is friendlier than export-controlled peers.
• Degree: currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's in mechanical engineering, computer science, AI or data science, IT, finance, or a related field
• Class year: juniors and seniors preferred for summer roles; the engineering summer JD asks for at least two years of study including one full year of ME-specific courses
• GPA: none stated on any of the four JDs reviewed
• Experience: "No experience required" on both Prosple JDs
• Work authorization: US citizen, US permanent resident, or US student visa (Prosple listings); no explicit sponsorship language either way
• On-site: summer interns work full-time on-site; the GenAI role requires four days a week on-site

Can International Students Intern at Autoliv?
Probably yes, which is unusual for an automotive supplier. Both Prosple JDs list "US Student Visa" as an eligible work right alongside citizen and permanent resident, so F-1 students on CPT or OPT appear to qualify. Compare that with export-controlled employers that require US person status only.
But no JD says "we sponsor" or "we don't sponsor," and one Ogden engineering JD asked for fluent Japanese for a role that works with Autoliv Japan. So read each posting's work-rights line before you apply, and don't assume Japanese is a general requirement (it isn't).
What Skills Does Autoliv Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
What do Autoliv's JDs actually ask for? We read four in full: Application Engineering (Talent.com mirror), Engineering Summer and IT Summer (Prosple), and the live GenAI posting. Communication and teamwork show up in every one. Data analysis appears in the engineering and finance-adjacent roles, and 3D CAD is a stated requirement for the Ogden engineering summer role.
But the hard skills split by track. Materials testing (DSC, IR spectroscopy, melt flow analysis) belongs to Application Engineering; Java, Python or C# plus cloud and cybersecurity belong to IT; basic Python and an interest in generative AI belong to GenAI. SolidWorks, CATIA, FEA and GD&T aren't named in any Autoliv JD, though they're standard in the wider mechanical engineering intern market.

Automotive engineering intern hiring right now: September 2026
Across US mechanical engineering intern postings tracked this month · aggregate market data, all employers
September 2026 is the fall recruiting wave: mechanical engineering intern postings jumped 190.1% from August, and 47.3% of new listings already carry Summer 2027 in the title. Seats fill on rolling review, so the applications that go in this month meet the widest pool of open roles.
Method: aggregate analysis of US mechanical engineering intern postings on Adzuna's US index, August average versus September 2026 to date (3 collection days). Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
And the analytical half of that chart maps to remote Externships. Extern has no mechanical engineering or automotive safety Externship, so these build the data-analysis, AI and strategy evidence Autoliv's requisitions reward, not the materials science itself.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis & operational reporting | Application Engineering JD: "carry out data analysis using Microsoft Office tools and other software"; Operational Financial Analyst intern posting | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| GenAI prototyping | GenAI Intern JD: Azure OpenAI, Copilot Studio, chatbots, copilots, automations | Wayfair AI Agent Engineering for Business Intelligence |
| Business analysis & project management | Business Analyst / PMO Intern posting, Auburn Hills | Corporate Strategy Externship Mentored by Eric Ries |
Each Externship runs 4–11 weeks (most commonly 8), which fits inside the September-to-February gap before Autoliv's board opens. Autoliv isn't an Extern partner; the deliverable is yours to describe when the interviewer says "tell me about your projects."

What Is the Autoliv Application and Interview Process Like?
Autoliv's process is quick and conversational. No online assessment appears in any US intern report, and Glassdoor's average time from application to hire is nine days.
So preparation is about your projects, not about grinding a coding platform.
1. Watch the Teamtailor portal from January 2027 at careerunitedstates.autoliv.com/jobs and filter for intern roles. Mirrors appear on Handshake, Indeed and Prosple, but the source is Autoliv's own site.
2. Build your profile and a tailored resume that leads with CAD, materials or polymer coursework, manufacturing exposure, and anything touching vehicle safety.
3. Apply within two weeks of the posting. Deadlines have ranged from March 31 to May 9 in prior cycles, and listings warn they may close early.
4. Attend campus events. Half of Glassdoor-reported intern interviews came through campus recruiting, with a third from online applications and the rest from referrals.
5. Interview, usually one-on-one (75%), sometimes a small panel. Behavioral questions plus technical fundamentals: strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and a walk-through of your projects.
6. Offer. No published timeline beyond the nine-day Glassdoor average; summer 2025 starts ran June 2 to June 30.
Glassdoor's eight intern interview reports rate difficulty at 3.0 out of 5 with 67% positive experiences. One India-based report describes a 65-question multiple-choice test; nothing like that appears in US reports. Details on the Autoliv students and graduates page.
What Students on Reddit Say
Autoliv's Reddit footprint is small and local. There's no dedicated "my Autoliv internship" thread; instead the company shows up in r/ogden as a major employer and in r/MechanicalEngineering as a recommendation.
And the tone is consistently warm about the work itself, if quiet on pay and process. Is that useful for an intern? Yes, because it tells you the facility is hands-on and the local reputation is solid.
In a thread from a struggling early-career engineer, one commenter suggested looking into Autoliv, describing the airbag facility as very cool with lots of machines and robots. The thread frames it as a hands-on engineering environment rather than a desk job.
An engineer weighing an offer asked locals about their Autoliv experiences. Replies described it as one of the big job providers in the Ogden area and discussed working conditions at the local sites before the poster decided.
Asked about good jobs around Ogden, commenters listed Autoliv alongside Lifetime Products as the reliable employers in the Ogden and Freeport area, which lines up with the 300-plus staff at its Ogden technical center.
How Do You Stand Out at Autoliv?
First, lead with the mission. Autoliv isn't a generic parts company; it's a safety company that says its products saved 40,000 lives and prevented 600,000 injuries in 2025. Connect your CAD design or materials project to making a crash survivable, and you'll sound different from every applicant who only knows the ticker.
Second, show hands-on materials and testing knowledge. The Application Engineering JD names differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and melt flow analysis, the polymer characterization methods behind airbag fabric, seatbelt webbing and inflator propellant. Lab coursework in materials science, polymers or failure analysis belongs at the top of your resume.
And third, know the product lines and the rivals. Autoliv holds roughly 42% of global passive safety and competes with ZF (which absorbed TRW's safety business), Joyson Safety Systems (which bought Takata's assets after the recall) and Continental. Can you explain why a knee airbag differs from a side curtain, or why pretensioner timing matters in a crash pulse? That's the kind of answer a nine-day hiring process rewards.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
Which suppliers should be on your list next to Autoliv? The natural set is other Tier 1 suppliers recruiting engineering interns in Michigan and the Midwest.
But only some of them have published guides, and the closest safety-systems competitor doesn't yet.
- ZF GroupAutoliv's largest direct competitor in occupant safety after acquiring TRW, plus chassis and driveline techCareers site

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Autoliv internship?
No. Summer 2026 internships ran June through August 2026 and their postings closed in spring 2026 with hard deadlines. The next summer cohort is 2027, and those postings are expected in February or March 2027. Four year-round intern roles (GenAI, Operational Financial Analyst, Internal Control, Business Analyst/PMO) are open now if you can't wait.
When do Autoliv internship applications open for summer 2027?
Expected February to March 2027, based on prior cycles. Autoliv posts late winter for a June start and sets hard deadlines: March 31 for summer 2023, and April 7 (IT) to May 9 (engineering) for summer 2025. Set alerts on the Teamtailor careers portal in January and apply within two weeks of a posting appearing.
How much do Autoliv interns get paid?
Autoliv doesn't publish intern pay; JDs say "attractive compensation package." Glassdoor's community-reported figures put the average near $36 an hour with a $27 to $48 range across 15 submissions, and the Utah-only subset near $35. Treat these as estimates, not an employer rate. Benefits include recognition awards, company events and university discounts.
Does Autoliv require a minimum GPA for interns?
No. None of the four Autoliv intern JDs reviewed mention a GPA floor, which is unusual among automotive employers. Focus your application on CAD skills, materials or lab coursework, programming for IT roles, and hands-on projects. The interview leans on your projects and engineering fundamentals rather than transcript numbers.
Does Autoliv sponsor international students for internships?
Autoliv's Prosple listings accept US citizens, permanent residents and holders of a US student visa, so F-1 students with CPT or OPT appear eligible. That's more permissive than export-controlled peers. But no JD states a sponsorship policy either way, so confirm the work-rights line on each specific posting before applying.
Where are Autoliv internships located?
Two hubs. Auburn Hills, Michigan hosts engineering, IT, GenAI, finance and PMO interns at the Americas Technical Center; Ogden, Utah hosts engineering and financial analysis interns. One prior IT internship sat in West Haven, Connecticut. Every role is on-site, and no housing or relocation help is mentioned in any JD.
What is the Autoliv internship interview like?
Short and direct. Glassdoor reports an average of nine days from application to hire, with 75% of intern interviews one-on-one and the rest small panels. Expect "tell me about yourself," questions on your projects, and technical basics like strength of materials, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. Difficulty averages 3.0 out of 5.
Can an Autoliv internship lead to a full-time job?
Possibly, but Autoliv publishes no conversion rate. The IT JD mentions "potential future roles within the company" and the engineering JD cites "potential for growth" in R&D. Indeed reviews are mixed: one Auburn Hills intern praised the culture and travel, while an Ogden intern felt the team didn't know what to do with an intern.
Autoliv's summer 2027 board opens in roughly five months and closes in weeks, so the fall is for building, not waiting.
