YHB is one of the few internships where “apply now” is literally true for Summer 2027: two requisitions, Assurance Intern | Summer 2027 and Tax Intern | Summer 2027, went live on the firm’s UKG job board on 24 August 2026 and were still open on 7 September 2026. YHB (Yount, Hyde & Barbour) was founded in 1947 in Winchester, Virginia, and in 2023 it broke into the INSIDE Public Accounting Top 100 Firms list while also being named one of the IPA 100 Fastest-Growing firms in the United States. Vault’s 2026 Internship Rankings named YHB a Top Ranked Internship and ranked it #15 Best Internships for People of Color and #25 for Overall Inclusion. The intern class runs 21 to 50 students, and the programme promises that interns will “meet our clients while visiting our offices across Virginia.” The firm assigns every intern a buddy, places them in Leadership Circles, and evaluates them for a full-time associate role where new graduates rotate between audit and tax before specialising.

What Is a YHB CPAs & Consultants Internship?

A YHB internship is a paid, 8-week summer placement that puts college students into real audit and tax work at a Top 100 US accounting firm founded in 1947 in Winchester, Virginia. Interns are assigned a buddy, placed in one of the firm’s Leadership Circles, and given hands-on client work: the Assurance track has you completing audit testing on cash, accounts payable and fixed assets, while the Tax track puts you on individual, corporate and partnership returns. Both tracks build toward a group project presented to senior management at the end of the summer. YHB also runs a separate two-day Externship for freshmen, sophomores and juniors that feeds directly into the internship: completing the externship makes you eligible for the internship the following summer. The firm is led by CEO Tom Milburn, carries a 3.7/5 on Glassdoor from 48 reviews, and was still calling itself a Top 100 firm in July 2026 while opening a new Ashburn, Virginia office.

When Do YHB CPAs & Consultants Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

YHB interviews for interns in the fall, and those they hire typically work the following summer. The two live Summer 2027 requisitions were posted on 24 August 2026, which means the fall interview cycle is starting now. There is no published close date on either posting, and YHB’s campus recruitment page says students can apply through their college or university’s career services, directly on the UKG board, or by emailing a resume and unofficial transcripts to the recruiter if their school is not on the schedule. YHB also runs a two-day externship programme in late May for freshmen, sophomores and juniors that feeds into the internship the following summer.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

YHB is a regional Top 100 firm with a class of 21 to 50 interns, not a Big Four with hundreds of seats. The firm interviews in the fall and hires on a rolling basis, which means seats fill progressively through September, October and November. Applying in the first weeks after the requisitions go live, which happened on 24 August 2026, gives you the widest selection of offices and the least competition. By December, the class is likely set. YHB also values campus relationships: applying through your school’s career services and through the UKG board doubles your visibility. And if you are a freshman, sophomore or junior who is not yet eligible for the internship, applying to the two-day externship in late May is the structural on-ramp, because completing it makes you eligible for the internship the following summer. That is a published, written commitment almost no other firm states.

Which YHB CPAs & Consultants Internship Programs Should You Target?

YHB offers a structured pathway from the externship through the internship to full-time associate. Which entry point to target depends on your class year and whether you have completed the required Intermediate Accounting coursework.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

YHB’s internship page and live requisitions spell out the requirements clearly:

Class year: college students about to enter their senior year or begin a master’s programme. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible for the externship instead.

Coursework (Assurance): knowledge from Intermediate Accounting 1 & 2; basic understanding of auditing principles and practices.

Coursework (Tax): knowledge from Intermediate Accounting 1; basic understanding of tax principles and accounting practices.

GPA: no minimum appears in either requisition or anywhere on yhbcpa.com. Vault records a 3.00–3.49 band as a guideline, not a published cutoff.

Work model: on-site. Both requisitions specify on-site experience at one of YHB’s Virginia offices, and interns travel between offices to meet clients.

Visa sponsorship: not stated. YHB publishes no sponsorship policy in either direction. Ask the recruiter directly.

Does YHB Have a Hard GPA Cutoff?

No published cutoff exists anywhere in YHB’s own materials. The 3.00–3.49 band comes from Vault’s employer-submitted profile, and it is absent from both live requisitions and every page on yhbcpa.com. What the requisitions do gate on is specific coursework: Intermediate Accounting 1 & 2 for assurance, Intermediate Accounting 1 for tax. If you have completed that coursework and you are entering your senior year or a master’s programme, you meet the stated bar regardless of your GPA. That said, Vault’s band suggests the typical admitted intern carries a 3.0 or above, so if you are below that, lead with the coursework, the grade in those specific classes, and any relevant project work.

What Skills Does YHB CPAs & Consultants Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

YHB’s two live Summer 2027 requisitions are the complete population of intern job descriptions for this firm, not a sample. The Assurance track asks for audit testing on specific balance-sheet accounts (cash, accounts payable, fixed assets), account reconciliation, and management letter drafting. The Tax track asks for return preparation across four entity types, tax research, and extension computation. Both tracks require strong written and verbal communication, time management, and the ability to participate in client meetings alongside YHB managers. One intern who did the programme named Caseware as the audit software, and a separate reviewer mentioned preparing tax returns as part of the hands-on work. For a regional Top 100 firm, the skills profile is practical and client-facing rather than technical-tool-heavy.

How Is Demand for Regional Accounting Interns Moving Right Now?

Regional CPA firm intern hiring: September 2026

Across US mid-market and regional accounting firm intern postings tracked this month · aggregate market data, all employers

Regional CPA firms are posting earlier: Top 100 firms outside the Big 4 are dropping summer 2027 intern requisitions in August and September, competing with national firms for the same campus talent pool
Externship and leadership programmes are expanding: firms like YHB, PKF O’Connor Davies and Plante Moran now run structured pre-internship pipelines for underclassmen, a trend that was rare outside the Big 4 five years ago
=
Audit and tax intern demand holds steady: IPA Top 100 firms continue to hire 21–50 interns per cycle, with tax tracks carrying roughly twice the volume of assurance at most firms

September 2026 is this tracker’s baseline month. The signal for regional firms is earlier posting and structured pipelines: students who wait until January miss the fall interview window at firms like YHB that recruit on campus in October and November.

Method: aggregate analysis of US mid-market and regional accounting firm intern postings, September 2026 baseline. Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.

How close is the overlap? The Pfizer document intelligence project is the modern version of the tax-research workflow YHB’s Tax requisition describes, the Breaking Games data analysis builds the reconciliation and variance-explanation skills both tracks test, and the Yinan Zhao financial modeling forces fluency in the exact balance-sheet accounts the Assurance requisition names for intern testing.

What Is the YHB CPAs & Consultants Application and Interview Process Like?

YHB’s interview process is described as conversational and trait-focused rather than technical. Vault intern reviewers consistently describe it as straightforward:

1. Apply through campus career services and/or the UKG board. Pick the specific requisition for your track (Tax or Assurance) and your preferred office. If your school is not on YHB’s campus schedule, email your resume, unofficial transcripts and a short note to Neile.Martin@yhbcpa.com.

2. Round 1: recruiter screen. Vault reviewers describe a first interview with the recruiter, focused on getting to know your traits and work characteristics.

3. Round 2: recruiter plus one additional employee. A second interview with the recruiter and one other YHB professional. Vault reviewers say it is “very easygoing and didn’t feel like an interrogation.” Some candidates report a third round.

4. Offer. Rolling; no deadline is published. YHB’s internship page says the firm interviews in the fall and hires for the following summer.

Vault reviewers describe the process as “extremely straightforward and simple.” Come with stories about teamwork, asking for help, and practical accounting work rather than technical brain-teasers. And ask about the buddy: every source that describes the programme mentions the assigned buddy, and knowing the structure signals you read past the headline.

What the Community Says

Reddit has no usable YHB internship discussion, so the cards below draw on first-hand, dated intern reviews from Handshake, Glassdoor and Vault.

A 2018 YHB intern’s favourite part of the summer was sitting in front of actual clients and hearing why they stay with the firm. They wrote: “We got to visit clients and hear from them what they value about YHB.” That matches YHB’s published promise that interns travel to offices across Virginia to meet clients.

r/Handshake Accountant Intern, June–July 2018, Winchester VA · read the thread

One intern’s main gripe was the mix, not the work: “Wish I would have been assigned more auditing work. Most of the time I was doing tax work.” YHB now posts Tax and Assurance as two separate requisitions, so choosing the right req is how you avoid that.

r/Handshake Accountant Intern, June–July 2018, Winchester VA · read the thread

The recurring advice from YHB interns is that the people will help the moment you ask, but the assignments will not chase you. “Don’t wait for work to come to you. Go out and seek projects to be a part of,” wrote one intern. A June 2026 Glassdoor reviewer rated the firm 5.0 and described it as a “great learning opportunity.”

How Do You Stand Out at a Growing Regional Firm With a Small Intern Class?

Four moves, all executable before fall 2026. First, apply now and apply twice: submit through the UKG board and through your campus career services, because YHB’s campus page names career services as the normal route and the board is the direct route. Second, pick a track and say why. YHB posts Tax and Assurance as two separate requisitions covering different office sets, and a past intern who wanted audit ended up mostly doing tax. Choosing the right req and explaining why in the interview avoids that outcome. Third, name Intermediate Accounting explicitly: it is the only academic prerequisite in either requisition, so put the course, the grade and one thing you built in it on the resume. Fourth, ask about the buddy. Every source that describes the programme mentions the assigned buddy, and asking who your buddy would be and how work gets assigned signals you read past the careers-page headline. And if you are a freshman or sophomore, target the externship instead: two days in late May, and completing it makes you eligible for the internship the following summer. That is a published structural advantage almost no other firm states in writing.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 YHB internship?

No. The summer 2026 class has already completed. The next open cycle is summer 2027: both the Assurance Intern | Summer 2027 and Tax Intern | Summer 2027 requisitions went live on 24 August 2026 and are open now with no published close date. Apply through the UKG board and your campus career services this fall.

How much do YHB interns get paid?

YHB says the internship is paid but does not publish an hourly rate. Both requisitions have pay-range visibility switched off with every compensation field empty. No employer figure appears on any careers page. If pay transparency matters to your decision, ask the recruiter directly.

What GPA do I need for a YHB internship?

No GPA minimum appears in either requisition or anywhere on yhbcpa.com. Vault’s employer-submitted profile records a 3.00–3.49 band, but treat that as a guideline about who typically gets in, not a published cutoff. The requisitions gate on coursework: Intermediate Accounting 1 & 2 for assurance, Intermediate Accounting 1 for tax.

When does YHB interview for internships?

In the fall. YHB’s internship page says “We interview for interns in the fall, and those we hire typically work the following summer.” A student reading this in September 2026 is inside the interview window for Summer 2027.

What will I actually work on as a YHB intern?

On the assurance side: audit testing of accounts such as cash, accounts payable and fixed assets, reconciling account differences with client personnel, and drafting management letter comments and the audit report. On the tax side: preparing individual, corporate and partnership returns, tax research, and calculating extensions and estimated payments. Both tracks shadow professionals at all levels, sit in on client meetings, and build a group project presented to senior management.

Is the YHB internship remote?

No. Both requisitions are on-site, and interns travel between YHB offices to meet clients. The Assurance requisition specifically states “During your on-site experience in one of our many office locations.” Note that the Leesburg office relocated to Ashburn, Virginia in August 2026.

What if I am only a freshman or sophomore?

Target the externship. YHB runs a two-day, one-night programme in late May for freshmen, sophomores and juniors, built around a team tax and audit project, a community service project and a networking dinner. Its value is structural: “After successful completion of the program, externs are eligible for YHB’s Internship the following summer.”

Does YHB sponsor visas for interns?

Not stated. YHB publishes no sponsorship policy in the requisitions or on its careers pages, in either direction. Ask the recruiter directly before investing in the application.

YHB’s fall interview window is open now, and two Summer 2027 requisitions are live with no published close date. Build proof before campus interviews start: a remote Externship turns “interested in public accounting” into a finished project a fall 2026 application can point at.
