The World Resources Institute (WRI) has no single internship deadline. It posts each Washington, DC intern role on its own, and each posting stays open for about two weeks. Pay is $20 an hour for undergraduates, $22 for graduate students and $24 for PhD students. As of 16 October 2026 no US intern role is open: the latest one, an Energy Research Intern posted on 13 October, is already off WRI's job board. The next one could post in any month, so the plan is to check the board weekly rather than wait for a season.

What Is a World Resources Institute Internship?

A World Resources Institute internship is a paid placement, posted role by role, at an independent research organization that works on climate, energy, nature and economic development. WRI describes itself as having 2,000+ staff, more than a dozen focus countries and partners in over 50 nations. The US roles in 2026 were based in Washington, DC and spanned energy research, restoration policy, foundation relations, communications and political mobilization. WRI's own internships page says it hosts more than 20 interns throughout the year and up to 60 summer interns; the page dates from 2021, so read that as a global, historical figure. WRI also lists roles in Brazil, India and Europe, which this page doesn't cover.

When Do World Resources Institute Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

WRI doesn't run an annual cycle, so there's no application season to count down to. Each role is its own requisition with its own posting date and deadline. The five US roles we read from 2026 were posted in February, March, June, August and October, and each stayed open about 15 days, except the October role, which was pulled from the job board within days. Start dates are "flexible", so the gap from posting to start is weeks rather than months. The Policy and Capacity Building Intern, posted on 19 February, listed an anticipated April start.

No US intern role is open. WRI's Workday board lists 11 openings on 16 October 2026, and four are intern-titled, all outside the US (Brazil and India). The Energy Research Intern, posted on 13 October, shows a deadline of 17 October on WRI's page but is no longer listed on the board, so treat it as closed. WRI warned it might close early.

Weekly from nowHARD DEADLINE

Check wri.org/careers/jobs once a week. With windows of about two weeks, a month away from the board can mean missing an entire role. Confirm that you live in DC, Maryland or Virginia before you apply.

~Feb – Jun 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Summer 2027 roles expected to post, projected from the 2026 pattern of February, March and June postings. No summer-labelled role has been seen, so confidence is low. Each posting carries its own deadline about two weeks out.

About 15 days per roleHARD DEADLINE

The 2026 roles ran about 15 days from posting to deadline, for example 19 February to 6 March and 15 June to 30 June. Submit a resume and a cover letter, which WRI requires, and apply early because it may close sooner.

Flexible start

Contracts are 3 months full-time, 6 months full-time or 6 months part-time at 20 hours a week, with flexible start and end dates and hybrid work in the Washington, DC office.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Every WRI posting carries a hard deadline, and every one we read warns that WRI may close for applications sooner if it receives a high volume of qualified applications. The October role bears that out: it was posted on 13 October with a deadline of 17 October and was gone from the job board by the 16th. So this isn't a rolling process, and it isn't a once-a-year one. It's a short fixed window per role, and the first few days are the safest.

Which World Resources Institute Internship Programs Should You Target?

There's no umbrella application. These are the five Washington, DC roles WRI posted in 2026, with the pay tier that applied to all of them.

See the live board at wri.org/careers/jobs. WRI's internships page says it offers paid and unpaid opportunities, but all five 2026 DC roles we read were paid.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The rules come from WRI's own postings and differ role by role:

• Degree level: the Energy Research role asked for current or recent master's or PhD study, while the Political Mobilization role asked for a bachelor's degree in a related discipline. A pay tier exists for undergraduates, so some roles take them.

• Work authorization: you need existing authorization at the time you apply, because WRI can't sponsor visas for these roles.

• Residency: you must live in DC, Maryland or Virginia at the start of employment.

• Location: hybrid in the Washington, DC office, with 4 to 8 office days a month depending on the role.

• Application: a resume and a cover letter through WRI's careers portal.

Does WRI Have a GPA Cutoff?

No GPA figure appears in any of the postings we read. The filter is fit with the role: degree level, the named skills, and the DC-area residency rule. Read the degree line first, since several roles are aimed at master's and PhD students.

What Skills Does the World Resources Institute Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

WRI doesn't publish enough open postings at once to count, so this comes from the five 2026 roles. Research roles ask for research design, data analysis and project coordination. The political role names Microsoft 365, SharePoint and familiarity with UN, CBD and UNFCCC processes. The communications role centers on editing and writing. WRI also states its values: independence, integrity, impact, partnership and care.

Note: No US intern role was open on 16 October 2026, and WRI posts roles one at a time, so there are too few current job descriptions to count and this page shows no skill chart. Skills here are read from the 2026 Energy Research and Political Mobilization postings.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

WRI's research roles want data skills and policy context. These remote Externships build the adjacent evidence.

A remote Externship runs 4 to 11 weeks, most commonly 8. Finishing one before the next WRI posting means your cover letter can point at a completed project.

What Is the World Resources Institute Application and Interview Process Like?

WRI's process is simple and fast:

1. Find a role on the careers page. The wri.org job list links each posting to WRI's Workday application, and Workday is the live source.

2. Apply through the careers portal. WRI says applicants must apply through its portal to be considered, with a resume and a cover letter by the deadline.

3. Wait for review. WRI says its People team carefully reviews all applications. Interview stages for US roles aren't published, so we haven't described any.

WRI warns that it never asks candidates for payment or bank details, so treat any such request as a scam.

What Students on Reddit Say

We found no first-hand WRI internship accounts on Reddit. The threads that mention WRI do so in passing or confuse it with another organization, so we haven't used them.

How Do You Stand Out in a Two-Week Window?

Three moves. First, be ready before a role posts: keep a current resume and a cover letter template you can adapt in a day. Second, match the degree line. Several roles target master's and PhD students, and the pay tiers show WRI knows which level it wants. Third, evidence the named skills, such as research synthesis, data analysis or UN process knowledge, with finished work. WRI publishes no applicant count or return-offer rate, so we won't estimate either.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 World Resources Institute internship?

No. The latest US role, an Energy Research Intern posted on 13 October 2026, is already off WRI's job board, and the other 2026 roles have passed their deadlines. The next role could post at any time, so check wri.org/careers/jobs weekly. Summer 2027 roles are expected between February and June 2027.

Are World Resources Institute internships paid?

Yes, the five Washington, DC roles we read all were. WRI pays $20 an hour to undergraduates, $22 to graduate students and $24 to PhD students. WRI's internships page says it offers paid and unpaid opportunities, so check the compensation line of each posting.

When do WRI internship applications open?

WRI has no fixed season. It posts each role separately, with windows of about two weeks, and posted US roles in February, March, June, August and October in 2026. Because start dates are flexible, the gap from posting to start is weeks, not months.

Are WRI internships open to undergraduates?

Some are. A pay tier exists for undergraduates, and the Political Mobilization role asked for a bachelor's degree in a related discipline. Other roles, such as Energy Research, asked for current or recent master's or PhD study, so read the degree line before you apply.

Does WRI sponsor visas for interns?

No. The US postings we read say you need existing work authorization when you apply, because WRI is unable to sponsor visas for the position. They also require you to be a resident of DC, Maryland or Virginia at the start of employment.

Are WRI internships remote?

The US roles we read are hybrid and based in Washington, DC, with 4 to 8 office days a month depending on the role. They require residency in DC, Maryland or Virginia, so they aren't fully remote. WRI also lists roles in other countries, which have their own rules.

How do I apply for a WRI internship?

Find the role on wri.org/careers/jobs and click Apply, which opens WRI's Workday portal. Submit a resume with a cover letter by the posted deadline. WRI says applicants must apply through the careers portal, and its People team reviews all applications.

Is there a GPA requirement for WRI internships?

We found no GPA figure in any of the WRI postings we read. The screening is by degree level, the named skills and the DC-area residency requirement. Check each posting, since requirements differ from role to role and some are aimed at master's and PhD students.

No US role is open today, and the next one could appear in any month. Check the board weekly, and use a remote Externship to turn research and data skills into a finished project your cover letter can point at.
