Every Whitney Museum internship is paid: the Hearst Summer Internship pays a $6,500 stipend for nine full-time weeks, and the semester-long Ostrover Family Academic Year Internship pays $3,000. The door that is open today is spring. The Whitney's board lists 17 Spring 2027 internships, and applications close on November 9, 2026, with rolling review, so some roles can fill sooner. For summer 2027 the plain-words version is this: you apply between about mid-November 2026 and mid-January 2027, you intern in summer 2027.
That summer window is a projection. The Whitney's own page still says the 2026 Hearst applications are closed, and the dates below come from last year's cycle, which opened on November 19, 2025 and closed on January 16, 2026.

What Is a Whitney Museum Internship?
A Whitney Museum internship is a paid placement inside a single department of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, which collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits American art of our time. The museum was founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, and its internships page says interns work side by side with experts in their field.
There are two programs. The Hearst Summer Internship is a full-time, nine-week session funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, and the Ostrover Family Academic Year Internship runs by semester with support from Julie and Doug Ostrover. Spring 2027 postings cover education, curatorial, communications, marketing, digital content, advancement, exhibition design, library and archives, technology services and employee experience.

When Do Whitney Museum Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The Whitney runs two calendars. Academic-year postings go up in the fall for the spring semester, and the summer program opens later. Reddit applicants for the previous spring cycle say the postings dropped in September 2025, and the spring 2027 window now closes November 9, 2026, about two months before the January 18 start. The summer 2026 program opened on November 19, 2025 and closed on January 16, 2026, which is roughly six months before its June 1 start at the opening and four and a half months at the close.
Treat the summer 2027 dates as a projection from one cycle. A 2024 program listing gave a March 15 deadline, so the window has moved about two months earlier in two years and could move again.
Spring 2027 applications are open: 17 internships across Education, Advancement, Communications, Marketing, Digital Content, Curatorial, Exhibition Design, Research Resources, Technology Services and Employee Experience. They're due November 9, 2026, with rolling review. The summer 2027 Hearst program hasn't been posted.
Spring 2027 closes November 9. The application asks for a resume and an essay on how the Whitney's mission connects to your background and why you want that department; the summer program also asks for one recommendation letter. Draft the essay now, and watch the internships page for the summer posting.
Hearst Summer Internship applications for summer 2027 are expected to open around mid-November 2026 and close around mid-January 2027, based on last cycle's November 19 to January 16 window. Applications after the deadline aren't considered, and references can arrive up to one week later.
Interviews are by video. Reddit applicants for summer 2026 reported selections in late March and early April, including an offer on April 2, 2026. Fall 2027 academic-year postings haven't been published.
The Hearst program is nine consecutive weeks, full time. The 2026 session ran June 1 to July 31, and the 2027 dates haven't been published. Interns can't be both summer and academic-year participants in the same year.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Spring has a published cutoff: the Whitney says the window is open "through November 9" and that "some opportunities may close before the deadline" because candidates are reviewed on a rolling basis. Submit in the first week or two, not on November 8. A Reddit applicant for last spring applied "a day or two" after postings dropped in September and still waited until December without a reply, so early is no guarantee, but late has no upside.
Summer works differently. The Whitney's FAQ says it won't consider applications submitted after the official deadline, so once the summer posting goes live, treat the date as absolute and check the internships page in mid-November.
Which Whitney Museum Internship Programs Should You Target?
Two programs, and the Spring 2027 list is split into 17 department postings. Each posting is its own application, and you can apply to several.
| Program | Focus | Dates | Deadline | Key skills / notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hearst Summer Internship | Museum department placement, speaker series, curator-led tours | Nine weeks, full time (2026: June 1 to July 31) | Expected mid-Nov 2026 to mid-Jan 2027; not yet posted | $6,500 stipend; rising and graduating seniors; hybrid in 2026 |
| Education (7 postings) | Access Programs, Community Programs and Partnerships, Family Programs, Interpretation and Educational Content, Spanish Initiatives, Youth Learning, K-12 Initiatives | Jan 18 to Apr 26, 2027 | Nov 9, 2026 (rolling) | Interest in teaching in the galleries; some roles prefer Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese or ASL |
| Advancement, Communications, Marketing, Digital Content (5) | Individual Philanthropy; Special Events and Corporate Partnerships; press outreach; email marketing; video and social | Jan 18 to Apr 26, 2027 | Nov 9, 2026 (rolling) | Microsoft Office, writing, Mailchimp (Marketing), Adobe Premiere (Digital Content) |
| Curatorial, Research Resources, Exhibition Design (3) | Prewar American art research; library and archives; models and drafting | Jan 18 to Apr 26, 2027 | Nov 9, 2026 (rolling) | Research experience; MLIS candidates for library; portfolio PDF for design |
| Technology Services, Employee Experience (2) | Museum technology projects; People and Culture office support | Jan 18 to Apr 26, 2027 | Nov 9, 2026 (rolling) | Technology posting asks for work you can show; Employee Experience needs no museum background |
The programs and FAQ live on the Whitney internships page, and open roles are on the careers board. One discrepancy to know about: the internships page says the $3,000 academic-year stipend covers 200 hours, while the Spring 2027 postings list 176 hours, so confirm with Internships@whitney.org if the hours matter to your school's credit rules.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The Whitney sets different rules for its two programs. These come from the internships page and the Spring 2027 postings:
• Summer (Hearst): rising and graduating seniors who will have completed at least three years of coursework, plus recent graduates within six months of finishing. Graduate students are generally not considered, and Research Resources takes MLIS candidates only.
• Academic year (Ostrover): undergraduates with at least two years of coursework (the Spring 2027 postings say rising juniors and above) and graduate students enrolled in an accredited program. A few postings say one year of coursework, so read the one you want.
• Work authorization: you need valid U.S. work authorization. The Whitney "cannot sponsor visas or act as a host organization", so it cannot consider J-1 visa holders.
• Repeat interns: prior interns can't do the summer program, and academic-year interns can do up to two semesters.
• Both programs: you can apply to summer and academic year in the same school year, but you can only take part in one.

Do I Need an Art History Background?
Not for most roles. The Whitney's FAQ says "No" to needing prior museum or art experience and welcomes diverse academic backgrounds, and several postings say students in all majors are encouraged to apply. Some roles do need specific training: Exhibition Design asks for a drafting and model-making portfolio, Research Resources wants library science coursework, and Curatorial Prewar Art requires previous research experience. The Whitney doesn't publish a GPA minimum.
What Skills Does the Whitney Museum Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The Whitney doesn't publish one skills list, so this page reads the qualification text of all 17 Spring 2027 postings. Interest in modern and contemporary American art appears most often, followed by attention to detail and basic office tools.
The three buckets look like this. Audience and communications work: press outreach and media monitoring in Communications, email marketing in Marketing, and video production in Digital Content. Research and collections: archival research for Curatorial and cataloguing for Library and Archives. Education and programs: Education is the largest group, seven of 17, working with school, family, community and access audiences.

Method: keyword count over the qualification text of the 17 Spring 2027 internship postings on jobs.whitney.org, read 16 October 2026; a posting can count under several skills. Postings differ in how much they list, so low counts mean "not stated", not "not wanted".

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill maps to a remote Externship you can finish before the summer window opens. None of these is affiliated with the Whitney.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Audience building and marketing | The Marketing posting wants "a passion for building new audiences for the Whitney's exhibitions and programs" and Mailchimp knowledge | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
| Communications and campaign strategy | Communications interns build press lists and track coverage; Digital Content asks for storytelling and media production | Beats by Dre Creative Advertising Strategy |

A finished project gives your Whitney essay something concrete to describe, and the application asks how your background connects to the museum's mission and your chosen department.
What Is the Whitney Museum Application and Interview Process Like?
Every role runs through the Whitney's careers board, and the steps are the same across departments.
1. Pick your departments on the careers board. You can apply to several, with a separate application for each.
2. Submit resume and essay. The essay should connect the Whitney's mission to your background and explain why that department. Exhibition Design and Graphic Design applicants add a portfolio link.
3. Send your reference (summer only): one recommendation letter, which can go to Internships@whitney.org up to one week after the deadline.
4. Review is rolling. For the spring window the Whitney reviews on a rolling basis, so earlier applications get read earlier.
5. Video interview. All interviews are conducted remotely by video; a Reddit applicant for Spring 2026 interviewed in the first week of January and had an offer days later.
6. Decision. The FAQ says academic-year decisions are finalized at least two weeks before the start date and that the museum can't send individual updates because of volume. Its summer timing still reads "Summer 2025 decisions: Finalized in early May", so use Reddit's report of late March and early April offers for summer 2026 as the better guide.
The Whitney confirms each application by email from a no-reply address; if you don't get one, resubmit or contact Internships@whitney.org promptly.
What Students on Reddit Say
Applicants compare notes on r/MuseumPros, mostly about timing.
Applicants for the Spring 2026 internships said they applied between September and early October and then waited. One heard nothing in December, while a Marketing applicant had an interview in the first week of January and an offer days later. Positions stayed on the board even when they weren't being reviewed.
In the 2026 museum internship megathread, Whitney summer applicants asked in March whether anyone had interviews, noting that the Whitney's site gave February and March for selections while its FAQ mentioned early May. One commenter posted an offer on April 2 for membership and marketing.
How Do You Stand Out for a Whitney Museum Internship?
The Whitney doesn't publish applicant counts, cohort sizes or an acceptance rate, so no number here would be sourced. What the postings do show is that departments hire for specific work, and generic museum enthusiasm is the weakest version of an application.
First, apply to departments, not to "the Whitney." The form asks how the museum's mission connects to your background and why you want that department, so name the exhibition, program or audience you would work on.
Second, apply early for spring. Review is rolling and the board says some roles may close before November 9.
Third, show a finished piece of work that matches the posting: a portfolio PDF for design, a short video for Digital Content, or a campaign analysis for Marketing and Communications.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Whitney Museum internship?
No. The Whitney's page says applications for the 2026 Hearst Summer Internship are closed, and that program ran June 1 to July 31, 2026. What's open now is the Spring 2027 academic-year internship, due November 9, 2026. The summer 2027 posting is expected around mid-November 2026 but isn't confirmed.
When do Whitney Museum summer 2027 internship applications open?
Expected around mid-November 2026, closing around mid-January 2027. That projection comes from summer 2026, which opened on November 19, 2025 and closed on January 16, 2026. A 2024 listing showed a March 15 deadline, so the calendar has moved earlier and could shift again. Check the internships page.
Are Whitney Museum internships paid?
Yes, all of them. The Whitney's FAQ says "No. All internships are paid positions." The Hearst Summer Internship pays a $6,500 stipend for nine full-time weeks, and academic-year interns receive a $3,000 stipend. The museum doesn't provide housing or transportation, so budget for New York commuting costs.
What can I apply to right now?
The Spring 2027 Ostrover Family Academic Year Internships. The careers board lists 17, across Education, Advancement, Communications, Marketing, Digital Content, Curatorial, Exhibition Design, Research Resources, Technology Services and Employee Experience. Applications are due November 9, 2026 and reviewed on a rolling basis, so some roles can fill earlier.
Who is eligible for a Whitney Museum internship?
Summer interns are rising and graduating seniors with three years of coursework, or graduates within six months of finishing. Academic-year interns are undergraduates with two years of coursework and graduate students. Everyone needs valid U.S. work authorization, because the Whitney cannot sponsor visas or consider J-1 visa holders.
Is the Whitney Museum internship in person?
Mostly. Academic-year internships are in person and onsite. The 2026 summer program was hybrid, with interns onsite at least three days a week. The Whitney's FAQ says all interns must be able to commute to the museum, so a fully remote Whitney internship isn't offered.
Do I need an art history background?
No for most roles. The Whitney's FAQ says it welcomes diverse academic backgrounds, and several postings encourage all majors. Some roles need specific training, including Exhibition Design (portfolio), Research Resources (library science students) and Curatorial Prewar Art (prior research experience). The Whitney doesn't publish a GPA minimum.
Does a Whitney Museum internship lead to a full-time job?
The Whitney doesn't publish an intern-to-staff conversion rate. Its internships page describes training, work experience and a chance to build a network of professional contacts. Staff openings are posted on the same careers board, so interns can watch for roles there, but nothing guarantees a return offer.
Spring 2027 closes November 9 and the summer window is expected to follow in mid-November. Use the weeks in between to build proof: a remote Externship gives your Whitney essay a finished project to talk about.
