The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York pays its interns $20 an hour, according to its internships page, but it takes applications only during short, announced windows and reviews nothing until the deadline has passed. Right now no cycle is open: the page lists only the 2026 spring and summer terms, and says "The Summer 2026 Internship Program is no longer accepting applications."
This guide covers the Guggenheim in New York, not Guggenheim Partners, the investment firm. No 2027 cycle has been announced. By the pattern of earlier years, spring 2027 applications are expected around early January 2027 and summer 2027 applications in late January to March 2027. You apply in winter, and you intern in summer 2027.
Quick Facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | Guggenheim internships page. The application form appears at the bottom of the careers page only when a window opens; applications are accepted only through that portal during the window |
| Application window (2027–28) | Spring 2027: expected ~early Jan 2027 deadline. Summer 2027: expected late Jan to Mar 2027 deadline. Both unannounced, low confidence (spring 2026 deadline: 2 Jan 2026; summer 2025: 31 Jan 2025) |
| Rolling? | No. One hard deadline per cycle; the FAQ says no applications are reviewed until the deadline has passed, so applying early doesn't help |
| Eligibility | Junior-year college level or above, graduate students, recent graduates and mature professionals pursuing further arts experience; no GPA, transcript or recommendation required; US work authorization required; prior interns not eligible |
| Duration | Summer: 8 weeks at 30 hours a week (summer 2026 ran 8 June – 31 July). Spring 2026 ran 2 March – 8 May; the FAQ lists academic-year terms at 15 hours a week for 10 weeks |
| Compensation | $20 per hour, per the museum's FAQ. No academic credit from the museum; no housing provided |
| Return offers | Not published |
| Locations | New York, NY (the Fifth Avenue museum); interviews are held by Zoom |
| # Programs | One Internship Program with placements across 17 departments, though not every department hosts interns every cycle |
Nothing is open: the Guggenheim's internships page lists only 2026 cycles, and its careers page showed 8 openings on 16 October 2026, none an internship. Every 2027 date below is an expectation, not an announcement.
Nothing is open at the Guggenheim yet, so the gap before the next announcement is the time to build proof. Externships are short remote projects for real organizations, most commonly 8 weeks long. What Is a Guggenheim Museum Internship?
A Guggenheim Museum internship is a place in the Guggenheim New York Internship Program, a paid program run by the museum's Academic Engagement team. Interns are assigned to departments "based on their academic background, professional skills, interests, and goals," per the internships page, and attend required weekly Museum Culture Seminars.
The museum lists 17 departments on its departments page, from Curatorial, Education and Conservation to Finance, Legal and Visitor Experience. It says an art history background isn't required, and that internships also cover business, finance, marketing and web design.

When Do Guggenheim Museum Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The Guggenheim runs spring and summer terms and posts each one for a single window. From archived copies of its internships page, summer 2025 applications closed on Friday 31 January 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET for a 2 June start, about four months ahead, and spring 2026 applications closed on Friday 2 January 2026 for a 2 March start, about two months ahead. The summer 2026 deadline wasn't recoverable; finalists were told by 24 April 2026.
The live page now lists only the 2026 terms. We checked the Guggenheim's careers page and application portal on 16 October 2026: 8 openings, none an internship, and no spring, summer or fall 2027 internship posting. The portal returned different responses for a live posting, a closed internship posting and an invented id, so the board is working. One caution: the site banner has lagged before, advertising a cycle as open after its deadline, so always read the date on the page.
No cycle is open and none is announced. Start the 3 to 5 page writing sample the application needs, and decide which two departments you'd name in your cover letter.
Spring 2027 applications expected, with a deadline around early January. Spring 2026 closed on Friday 2 January 2026 and finalists were contacted by 20 February. Low confidence, because no 2027 dates are announced.
Summer 2027 applications expected, with a hard deadline in this range. Summer 2025's deadline was 31 January 2025. Nothing is reviewed until the deadline passes, so use the whole window to polish.
Zoom interviews for finalists. In earlier years finalists were contacted by 14 March (summer 2025) and 24 April (summer 2026). Others get an automatic email after selection ends.
About eight weeks at 30 hours a week in New York (summer 2026 ran 8 June to 31 July), plus the required weekly Museum Culture Seminars.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The Guggenheim runs on hard deadlines, not rolling review. Its FAQ says "We only accept applications during the specified application period," and that no applications are reviewed until the official deadline has passed. Submitting on day one doesn't move you up the queue.
What matters is catching the window and arriving prepared. The application appears only when a window opens, the museum doesn't keep applications on file, and it can't give status updates because of its volume of applicants. If you miss a window, you reapply next cycle.
Prepare the writing sample and department picks now, so you can submit a polished application on any day inside the window.
Which Guggenheim Museum Internship Programs Should You Target?
The museum runs one internship program with placements across 17 departments, and your cover letter names two of them. These are some of the larger groups from the museum's departments page.
| Department | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curatorial | Exhibition planning, publications, collection research | 8 weeks (summer) | Research and writing |
| Education | Academic engagement, public programs, school and family programs | 8 weeks (summer) | Not listed on the museum's departments page |
| Advancement | Corporate and individual giving, membership, special events | 8 weeks (summer) | Not listed on the museum's departments page |
| Communications | Press, digital media, graphic design, marketing | 8 weeks (summer) | Writing and design; a portfolio replaces the writing sample for Graphic Design |
| Exhibition Design | Planning and designing exhibitions | 8 weeks (summer) | 3D software such as CAD or Vectorworks; portfolio required |
| Finance, Legal and Library and Archives | Nonprofit finance, legal support, collections information | 8 weeks (summer) | Finance interest; J.D. for Legal; library science coursework |
Not every department hosts interns each cycle. The full list is on the departments page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The Guggenheim publishes its rules in the FAQ:
• Level: junior-year college level or above, graduate students, recent graduates and postgraduates. The FAQ also welcomes mature professionals pursuing further experience in the arts, and rising juniors may apply for the summer cycle.
• Enrollment: you don't need to be a student.
• Background: art history or prior museum experience isn't required, and the museum says its internships also cover business, finance, marketing and web design.
• Legal Department: a J.D. program, current or completed.
• Work authorization: you must be authorized to work in the US. F-1 students are welcome, but the museum can't sponsor J-1 visas.
• Repeat interns: not eligible.

Do You Need a GPA, Transcript or Recommendation?
No. The FAQ lists no GPA minimum and requires no transcripts or recommendation letters. The application is a resume, a cover letter naming two departments and a writing sample of 3 to 5 pages. Design placements take a portfolio instead. The museum gives no academic credit, though it can sign as host organization if your school offers credit.
What Skills Does the Guggenheim Museum Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The Guggenheim doesn't publish a skills list for the whole program, and no internship posting is live to read. Its departments page gives skills by department: research and writing for Curatorial, 3D software such as CAD or Vectorworks for Exhibition Design, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for Photography, library and information science coursework for Library and Archives, and an interest in nonprofit finance and accounting for Finance.
Across every department, the application tests the same two things: a clear writing sample and a reasoned choice of two departments.
Note: The Guggenheim has no open internship postings between cycles, and closed postings are no longer readable, so this page lists the skills its departments page names instead of a frequency chart. We'll add one if a 2027 posting goes live.
How Is Demand for Marketing Interns Moving Right Now?
Marketing intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 1,424 in August
For Guggenheim applicants: the museum's careers page listed 8 openings on 16 October 2026 and none was an internship, because it hires interns only in announced cycles. Use the card as market context, and plan around the museum's own window.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
These remote Externships build skills that map to the Guggenheim's communications, advancement, visitor experience and finance placements. They support your application and don't replace it.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Communications and marketing | Communications department: press, digital media, graphic design, marketing | Beats by Dre Creative Advertising Strategy Externship |
| Audience research for visitors and education | Education and Visitor Experience departments | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior Externship |
| Nonprofit finance and budgeting | Finance department: interest in nonprofit finance and accounting | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship |
| Data and reporting | Advancement and Education: donor, membership and program reporting | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship |
For the Guggenheim itself, the strongest preparation is a polished writing sample and two well-argued department choices.
What Is the Guggenheim Museum Application and Interview Process Like?
The museum describes the process in its FAQ:
1. Wait for the window. The online application appears at the bottom of the careers page only when the application period opens.
2. Submit the materials. A resume, a cover letter explaining your interest in two specific departments, and a 3 to 5 page writing sample (a design portfolio for Exhibition Design and Graphic Design).
3. Deadline passes. Nothing is reviewed before this date, and the museum can't give status updates because of its volume of applicants.
4. Zoom interviews. Selected finalists are contacted by the date on the internships page.
5. Notification. Selected applicants hear before the term starts. Everyone else gets an automatic email once selection ends, and nothing is kept on file, so you reapply each cycle.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit threads show mixed experiences and a timeline that doesn't always match the posted dates. Each card is one thread's account, paraphrased.
Former interns gave opposite verdicts. One said they learned little about museum work and found their department disorganized, while another praised field trips to other arts organizations and resume and interview tips from a hiring manager. A third called it prestigious but admin-heavy, with the value in the people you meet.
Summer 2024 applicants said the deadline was moved up a week, and one interviewee said the museum first contacted them on 5 March, after the stated 1 March cutoff. Their takeaway was that the posted notification dates aren't strictly followed.
In 2023 some summer applicants got rejection emails at the end of February without an interview. Others waited into April with a portal status of "on hold," and a commenter pointed out that you can check status by entering your email on the application portal.
How Do You Stand Out for a Guggenheim Internship?
Three moves, all before the window opens.
First, write the sample early. The writing sample should show both research and composition in 3 to 5 pages, and an academic paper is fine. Polish it before the deadline, because nothing is read until then.
Second, choose two departments carefully. The cover letter has to explain your interest in each and how the internship fits your goals, and the museum assigns interns by background, skills and interests.
Third, plan the logistics. The museum doesn't provide housing or academic credit, and international students need US work authorization, since J-1 isn't sponsored.
On what comes after: the museum doesn't publish a return-offer rate, and each person can intern only once.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Guggenheim internship?
No. The Guggenheim's summer 2026 cycle has closed, and its page says the program is no longer accepting applications. No 2027 cycle is posted yet. Watch the internships page for the next announcement, which by earlier years' pattern should bring a spring 2027 window around early January.
When is the deadline for the Guggenheim summer 2027 internship?
The Guggenheim hasn't announced it. Summer 2025's deadline was 31 January 2025, and summer 2026 applicants were told by 24 April 2026 whether they'd reached the interview stage. Expect summer 2027 applications to close between late January and March 2027, with low confidence.
Are Guggenheim internships paid?
Yes. The Guggenheim's FAQ says it offers participants $20 per hour. At the summer schedule of 30 hours a week for 8 weeks, that works out to about $4,800 before taxes by our arithmetic. The museum provides no academic credit or housing.
How long is a Guggenheim internship?
The summer internship runs 8 weeks at 30 hours a week; summer 2026 ran 8 June to 31 July. The FAQ lists academic-year terms at 15 hours a week for 10 weeks, though the spring 2026 term ran 2 March to 8 May, so check the current page.
What do I need to apply for a Guggenheim internship?
A resume, a cover letter explaining your interest in two specific departments, and a 3 to 5 page writing sample showing research and composition skills. Exhibition Design and Graphic Design applicants submit a design portfolio instead. The museum doesn't require transcripts or recommendation letters.
Do I need an art history background for a Guggenheim internship?
No. The Guggenheim says art history or prior museum experience isn't required, and its internships also cover business, finance, marketing and web design. Interns are assigned to departments based on their academic background, professional skills, interests and goals, so your major doesn't decide where you land.
Can international students intern at the Guggenheim?
Yes, if they're authorized to work in the US. The Guggenheim welcomes F-1 students, but the museum can't sponsor J-1 visas. All application materials must be in English, so plan your work authorization with your school before the window opens.
Does applying early help for a Guggenheim internship?
No. The FAQ says no applications are reviewed until the official deadline has passed, and the museum doesn't give status updates or keep applications on file. Use the time before the deadline to polish your writing sample, and reapply next cycle if you aren't selected.
The Guggenheim hasn't announced its 2027 cycles. Prepare your writing sample and department picks now, and if you'd like to build communications or research proof while you wait, a remote Externship is one way to start.
