United Way is a federation, so "a United Way internship" means one of two things: the national office, United Way Worldwide in Alexandria, Virginia, or one of roughly 1,100 local United Ways, each a separate employer. At the national office, nothing is posted today. As of 16 October 2026 its job board lists one role, a Vice President, Controller, and no internship. The last two readable intern postings, for summer 2025, were published on 19 and 26 February 2025 and paid $21 to $25 an hour, so summer 2027 postings are expected around February 2027. In plain words: you apply in early 2027, you intern in summer 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project with a real organization, most commonly over 8 weeks. What Is a United Way Internship?

A United Way internship is a placement either at United Way Worldwide (UWW), the national and global office in Alexandria, Virginia, or at one of the local United Ways. This page covers the national office. UWW describes a global network spanning 37 countries and 1,100 communities in its 2025 internship postings, and its interns attended weekly meetings led by subject matter experts and professional development workshops, with a learning plan available for school credit. The two 2025 roles we could read were Intern, Public Policy (tracking legislation and supporting advocacy events) and Enterprise Support Intern (knowledge management and content governance). Local United Ways are independent nonprofits with their own boards, budgets and internships, so a posting from your hometown chapter isn't the national program.

When Do United Way Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The national office runs one summer program, posted late in winter for an early-June start. The only dated evidence is two summer 2025 postings: Intern, Public Policy was published on 19 February 2025 and Enterprise Support Intern on 26 February 2025, both for 2 June to 31 July 2025, a lead of about three and a half months. A 2026 summer program appears in a United Way Worldwide social post that we could see only as a search snippet, so we don't cite its details. Neither 2025 posting showed a closing date. Projected forward, summer 2027 postings are expected around February 2027, with a low-to-medium confidence rating because the pattern rests on two data points one year apart.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

No national-office internship is posted. The UWW board shows one role, a Vice President, Controller, and the shared board of 70 jobs has one internship, a local posting in the Orlando area. Use this time to decide between the national office and your local chapter, and to set a job alert.

The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship and ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship are remote, real-organization projects that add finished work to a nonprofit application.

Prepare a resume, a short writing sample and a clear sense of the legislative process if you want the policy role, which in 2025 preferred government, organizing or political-office experience. Have your U.S. work documentation ready, because the 2025 postings asked for it at application.

~Feb 2027EXPECTED

Applications for summer 2027 expected to be posted on careers.unitedway.org, projected from the 19 and 26 February 2025 postings. Check the UWW-filtered board weekly from late January and apply in the first days, since no close date was stated.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

We can't call this rolling or give a deadline: the 2025 postings showed none. What we can say is that national-office postings have gone up in late February, that each role is posted on its own, and that a requisition can come down without notice. Apply as soon as the posting appears rather than near a date that was never stated. If you also want a local United Way internship, check that chapter's page separately, because its calendar is independent.

Which United Way Internship Programs Should You Target?

The national office has one summer program; the roles change each year. The two roles we could read are below. Local United Ways run their own internships and aren't part of this table.

Intern, Public Policy (Strategy and Innovation)Track and analyze legislation, support the annual Advocacy Forum and Capitol Hill Day, research for advocacy2 Jun–31 Jul 2025, onsite, generally Mon–ThuLegislative process knowledge, research, writing, MS Office

The current list is on the UWW-filtered board. Other titles surfaced in search but we couldn't verify their dates, so we don't list them.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

From the two summer 2025 national-office postings we read in full:

• Enrollment: open to current students attending an accredited college or university, undergraduate or graduate.

• Work authorization: you must be eligible to work in the United States and have all documentation at the time of your application.

• Preferred background (policy role): political science, public policy, economics, social work, education or public health, plus knowledge of the legislative process.

• Location and schedule: onsite at the Alexandria office, generally Monday to Thursday; one 2025 role was hybrid.

• Local United Ways: set their own requirements, which may differ from the national office's.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

No GPA figure appears in either 2025 posting. The filters are enrollment, U.S. work eligibility and, for the policy role, relevant coursework and legislative knowledge. With no 2027 posting yet, check the new text when it appears.

What Skills Does United Way Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

With no live national-office posting, the profile comes from the two 2025 roles. Both ask for Microsoft Office and clear writing. The policy role adds research, analysis and legislative process knowledge, and prefers experience in government, organizing or a political office. The Enterprise Support role favors web-based databases and software, knowledge management and attention to detail. Local United Way postings emphasize different skills, such as student success work in Orlando.

Note: Skill chart not shown: United Way Worldwide had no live intern postings on 16 October 2026, and only two closed summer 2025 postings could be read in full, too few for a frequency chart. The skills above are quoted from those postings; this section will add a chart when summer 2027 postings appear.

For United Way applicants: the national office's own board listed no internship on 16 October 2026, so this card describes the wider policy market, not an open United Way role.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

No remote Externship replaces a legislative or advocacy role, but these projects give you finished analysis and communication work that fits the 2025 postings.

These don't teach the legislative process, which the policy role prefers. They give you finished work, practice with data and writing for an audience, and something specific to describe in a cover letter.

What Is the United Way Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the 2025 postings and the United Way careers page:

1. Choose national or local. United Way Worldwide posts on the UWW-filtered board; local United Ways post on the shared board or their own sites. They are separate employers.

2. Set a job alert. Postings appear on careers.unitedway.org and may also be listed on Handshake. Apply only through those channels.

3. Apply to the specific role. Submit what the posting asks for and have your U.S. work documentation ready.

4. Interview steps: not published. We found no description of rounds or timing, and no closing date on the 2025 postings.

United Way's careers page warns about fake recruiters and says to apply only through its official board. Ignore any recruiter who contacts you first.

What the Community Says

We found no first-hand account of the United Way Worldwide internship. Reddit results were about local chapters, jobs and social-work placements, which can't be attributed to the national program, so there are no quote cards here. We also didn't use network-wide employer ratings, because they don't describe the intern program.

How Do You Stand Out?

Three moves. First, choose the track: a policy applicant should show how the legislative process works and why advocacy matters, while a support applicant should show writing and attention to detail. Second, show a project, not an interest: a short brief, a cleaned-up database or a community data analysis speaks to the work described in the 2025 postings. Third, be ready early. National-office postings have gone up in late February, and no close date was published. United Way doesn't publish applicant counts or conversion rates.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 United Way internship?

No. Summer 2026 is over, and as of 16 October 2026 United Way Worldwide has no internship posted; its board lists one Vice President, Controller role. The next national-office window, for summer 2027, is expected around February 2027. Local United Ways post on their own calendars.

When do United Way summer 2027 internship applications open?

Expected around February 2027 at the national office, based on two summer 2025 postings published on 19 and 26 February 2025 for a 2 June start. That's low-to-medium confidence, because it rests on two data points. Check careers.unitedway.org weekly from late January.

How much do United Way Worldwide interns earn?

The two summer 2025 national-office postings paid $21 to $25 per hour. Local United Ways set their own pay: one live Orlando-area posting starts at $15 an hour. No 2027 pay is published yet, so check the posting when it appears.

Are United Way internships at the national office or local chapters?

Both exist, as separate employers. United Way Worldwide in Alexandria, Virginia runs the national summer program this guide covers. Roughly 1,100 local United Ways are independent nonprofits with their own postings, pay and dates. A local posting isn't the national program.

Who can apply for a United Way Worldwide internship?

Current students at an accredited college or university, undergraduate or graduate, who are eligible to work in the U.S. and have documentation ready at application. The policy role preferred political science, public policy, economics, social work, education or public health. No GPA was stated.

How long is the United Way Worldwide internship?

About nine weeks. Summer 2025 ran from 2 June to 31 July, generally Monday to Thursday, with weekly meetings and professional development workshops. The roles were onsite in Alexandria, Virginia, and one was hybrid. Confirm dates and work model in the 2027 posting.

Is the United Way Worldwide internship remote?

Mostly not in recent years. The summer 2025 roles were onsite in Alexandria, Virginia, with one hybrid role. Some 2021 roles were fully remote, but that's historical. Local United Ways may offer other arrangements, so read each posting for its work model.

How can I tell if a United Way internship posting is real?

Apply only through careers.unitedway.org or the postings it links to. United Way's careers page warns about fake recruiters and says to ignore anyone who contacts you first. Check that a local chapter's posting is on the shared board or that chapter's own website.

No national-office internship is open today, and summer 2027 postings are expected around February 2027. Set a job alert on the UWW board, decide whether the national office or your local chapter fits, and spend the wait building proof: a remote Externship gives you a finished project to point to.
